parking lot area, but bob tells me the station is not affected and i see no delays for b.a.r.t. we follow the investigation, but b.a.r.t. access and schedule just fine at the warm springs station. we're looking to the maps. no problems on the roadways. the earlier crash was cleared from 580, and we still have construction where overnight grinding work is going on as you travel through the area approaching richmond. we'll track the slowdown. it's expected, but it's also expected to clear up right now. for more on breaking news, back to you. >> a busy morning. breaking news in the south bay as well, where an arsonist strikes at a south san jose cafe overnight. >> kris sanchez live there at the scene. this is off monterey and old tully road. kris, what do we know so far? >> well, we'll have to say suspected arsonist at this point because that's what the owner thinks happen. however, the fire department, investigators are not confirming that at this point.
5:01 am
the firefighters just left the scene here, but this is the restaurant where the fire happened around 3:15 this morning. in fact, when our crews arrived, it was a pretty good firefight. the fire was pretty aggressive and very quick moving. you can see a security guard coming out now to check on the premises. the fire burned about 20 minutes before firefighters were able to get it under control. now, when we were here, we also saw investigators up on the rooftop of that building looking down into something on the top of the building. so we don't know if that is where the fire originated at this point. but there's not a lot of visible burn marks on the outside of the building. so the battalion chief who is out here this morning said he's not ready to confirm anything at this point. but that he did hear from that owner saying that this is the fourth time that this restaurant has been set on fire. we will try to confirm that through the morning as well. again, the fire burned about 20 minutes. this is on monterey road, not too far from old tully.
5:02 am
a busy stretch of roadway, as mike knows. we have been in touch and there is no impact to traffic. as you pass by this morning, you won't even have to worry about the looky loos because the fire trucks are all gone. >> good to know. thank you, kris. >> right now, we want to get a check of your forecast. meteorologist kari hall has been focusing on what we can expect weather wise this week, and kari, it really has been a pleasant one. >> it has been a pleasant week for the bay area. we're also keeping an eye on what's happening with hurricane lane as we get a look at the system. it's a very large category-4 hurricane as it nears hawaii. and we're seeing those outer rain bands now bringing some heavy potentially flooding rain to parts of hawaii. now this will weaken over the next couple days as it get closer to oahu, as a category-1 hurricane later on this evening and early tomorrow morning and further weakening is expected as it continues to move away. here's what we know and what
5:03 am
we're expecting over the next couple days. rain mostly at about 5 to 15 inches. isolated amounts of rain up to 20 inches of rain, which will cause some flash flooding and some mudslides. wind speeds peaking at 73 miles per hour with very dangerous surf and the eye staying just south of the hawaiian islands. as we look back at the history, we have only seen two hurricanes since we have been taking records and naming these storms, and dot was 1959, but we also had hurricane muneeky, and most recent history in 1992. that moved through kauai in 1992, september 11th. so we're looking at the history as well as what we're expecting for hurricane lane as we're seeing this unusual situation unfolding. as we look at what's happening across the bay area today, our high temperatures staying nice and cool and some pleasant weather here. marcus and laura. >> all right, kari. >> 5:03 right now.
5:04 am
people in hawaii are preparing for the worst. that's hurricane lane barreling toward the island. hawaii isn't is expected to get a direct hit from the storm, but it could bring widespread rain and powerful winds. this is what the massive storm looks like from the international space station. look at that, how widespread that is. in the meantime, help is on the way to hawaii from right here in the bay area. 36 rescuers along with canines from san francisco, san mateo, and santa clara counties all on the ground in oahu this morning. task force 3 is prepared for water rescues, medical rescues and anything else. >> they're embedded with local teams, three islands in advance of the hurricane. >> so task force 3 was also deployed in 1992 for the strongest storm to ever hit hawaii, hurricane aniki, that
5:05 am
caused $5 billion in damage and killed six people. everyone is hoping lane doesn't bring the same destruction. you saw kari hall reporting on hurricane lane the last few minutes. she's constantly monitoring the system as it moves closer to the island. she's going to keep you up to date on what they're going through. you can follow her on twitte twitter, @karihallweather. >> new this morning, a suspected groping incident at shoreline amphitheatre, and police are wondering if others may have been targeted. this is the man police say inappropriately touched at least one female on the lawn at last friday's charlie puth concert. his accuser is 17 years old. police say the suspect, jordan williams, does not know the girl he touched. police believe williams may have done the same thing to other women. they're hoping they come forward. also new this morning, central marin police hoping you can identify the men in these images. they were posted to facebook. investigators say five men swiped devices off two tables at
5:06 am
the apple store around noon yesterday. they took off in a waiting car with a license plate covered. in all, they took nearly $20,000 worth of merchandise. >> 5:06 right now. happening today, the suspected golden state killer joseph d'angelo is due back in court. earlier this week, prosecutors from several california counties agreed all cases tied to the golden state killer case would be tried in sacramento county. that includes four felonies for suspected attacks that took place in contra costa county. the charges against d'angelo include 13 counts of murder. new this morning, possible solution to the housing crisis. state leaders are expected to discuss building more homes around b.a.r.t. stations, but that could mean fewer parking spots. today in the bay's pete suratos joins us live in walnut creek with both sides of the issue. good morning, pete. >> yeah, good morning to you, laura. actually, we're here at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station, which is in the midst of its own
5:07 am
upgrades. here, you can see this is where they're going to eventually build the parking garage in this area, more than 900 parking spots. we'll get to those details in a moment as it's part of a bigger project for walnut creek which will eventually build apartments on the b.a.r.t.-owned land in this area. that's exactly what the state bill is about. now, this is according to the san jose mercury news. this type of construction isn't exactly new for b.a.r.t. when they're talking about the state build. b.a.r.t. has worked with developers to build thousands of homes at or near 13 of its stations. but the bill would force cities to rezone b.a.r.t. land and fast track approvals for certain developments. now, b.a.r.t. has already set a goal to build 20,000 new apartments by 2040 on the land that it owns and 35% of it would be rented alt below market rate. for those that are for this bill, they're saying it's a viable solution to the current housing crisis. but those in opposition say the city should have the last say on housing, not b.a.r.t., and also more housing could affect parking and overall traffic at b.a.r.t. stations.
5:08 am
now, we did get a chance to quickly catch up with at least one rider here at the walnut creek b.a.r.t. station to get his thoughts on the bill. >> the people have to live somewhere, right? and it makes sense to build housing close to b.a.r.t. or any municipality that moves people fast to get to where they want to go. >> here's a look at that new parking garage that's under construction here in walnut creek. it's in the works as part of the walnut creek transit village that's going to add about 900 parking spots, and there will be a new b.a.r.t. police station here as well. but during the next few months of construction, the west access road will be closed as will the south parking lot. going to take you back out here live to show you what is under construction here. as for the housing bill that we were talking about, it could be discussed as early as today. live here in walnut creek, pete

suratos. >> thanks. 5:0 sath right now. getting mail a year after it was sent and others not getting mail at all. apparently what's happening in martinez. dozens of people showed up at a special meeting with representatives from the postal service last night. that included two congress member as well. people sounded off about mail problems with many saying carriers are overworked because of the shortage of workers. >> he's already working a double shift that day, carrying somebody else's route who is sick. and he was called that day to ask to work his day off. >> now, the regional manager says worker retention is a big challenge for the post office. congressional representatives say that they expect improvements. they also say the post office needs more funding to be more efficient. >> this is a perfect opportunity to remind everyone who is looking for a job that the postal service is hiring. we did some checking overnight and you can actually check out hiring events this weekend in san francisco, san jose, and oakland. starting salary for carrier

assistants is $16 an hour. vehicle operators start at more than $21 an hour. >> right now, as we approach 5:10, we're starting out with cloudy skies for the south bay. let's get out the door with some cool temperatures. as we head to south san jose to santa teresa, we go from 62 at 9:00 to 72 at 1:00. another pleasant day. on your way to the dublin b.a.r.t. station, we'll see the skies clearing at 8:00 to 9:00 this morning and then all clear skies but it will be hazy. at noon, wee up to 69 degrees as you make your way to the hiking trails on the peninsula. we start out with patches of fog and mainly cloudy skies throughout the morning but there will be gradual clearing and gusty winds, cool temperatures there. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates and i'll break it down for the south bay coming up in a few minutes. mike, you're seeing changes for east shore freeway. >> because of some crews that are clearing, making changes to
5:11 am
the road. it has gone from red to orange in the last few minutes. we saw all the crews registered as clear westbound 80, see the area approaching el cerrito, and we're looking at the recovery now as the final vehicles and cones are cleared from all those lanes. we should see more traffic headed toward the bay bridge. no major problems. one crash over here. byron highway, not affecting most of our commuters. the rest of the bay, you're at speed. back to you. >> hope it stays that way. thanks, mike. coming up here on today in the bay, grape harvesting begins in the east bay. new this morning, the reason it's expected to be a great year for wine lovers. president trump gives a warning this morning. his impeachment, his words, will cause the stock market to crash. and later, coming up at 5:23, the reason hemp could be the solution to our housing crisis.
5:14 am
it's 5:14. let's head over to cupertino and see how our temperatures pan out for today. going from the low 60s at 9:00, and mostly to partly cloudy skies. we'll see that through about 11:00, and then as we make plans for the afternoon, it will be in the mid 70s. breezy wind with hazy sunshine. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend as our temperatures go up just a few more degrees. more on that coming up in about five minutes. >> and right here, the berkeley curve moves smoothly.
5:15 am
good speed. but expect more traffic as the construction crew cleared from the el cerrito area. looking at a smooth drive down the east shore freeway. >> and very glad you're with us on this thursday morning. looks like a reasonably quiet day ahead on the market. the s&p 500 came within a whisker of a record close yesterday. target performing very well as we said it would. and we get the weekly unemployment filing numbers today. president trump is on fox and friends in a pretaped interview conducted just after tuesday's double conviction of manafort and cohen. the president says in the interview he thinks the stock market would crash if he were impeached. that is a remarkable statement. we don't hear the president talking about impeachment much. now, is he right? well, hard to say. the stock market performed very poorly during watergate, though nixon wasn't impeached. it did very well during the clinton years, and bill clinton was impeached.
5:16 am
that was also in the middle of the dotcom boom, so the economy may have more influence on the markets than who's in charge. in fact, just this week, the fed said it thought the biggest threat to the american economy was the global trade war, which president trump launched. we have no way of knowing if a president pence would have the same policies towards trade. >> the chinese and american trade representatives, by the way, met today for the second day in a row, but president trump says he doesn't, quote, expect much. >> the white house still reeling from accusations under oath in open court from president trump's former lawyer michael cohen, and the tech world has its curiosity piqued as we read over the court papers in the cohen case. cohen's records show he paid $50,000 for tech services related to the campaign, but it doesn't specify what the services were or what the company was that supplied them. obviously, this could be a whole
5:17 am
lot of nothing. obvio obviously, campaigns use computers and they need security, but we don't know what it is. it was hand written in the ledger, so naturally, it has everybody's curiosity up and running this morning. >> thanks, scott. >> it's 5:17 right now. well, some are saddened by the closure of san jose based orchard supply hardware stores, others are looking at future opportunities. east bay times reporting retail experts say closures of toys "r" us stores and soon orchard stores could allow large national chains to move in. it's because they'll be able to acquire 40 to 50 stores all at once. in the short term, we'll see a lot of empty store fronts. orchard stores are expected to close at the end of the year. >> wine lovers not to mention growers can nearly taste it. harvest is in the air. earlier this week, wine lovers in livermore valley held their
5:18 am
annual blessing of the grapes. while the crops where some wines are still weeks away, at least one tri-valley winery is harvesting today. page mill winery owner dave stark says the growing season is shaping up well. >> it's been very sort of even. not too many heat spikes, not too many weeks really, really hot. vine has been nice and healthy throughout. >> he expects to harvest about one ton of grapes. most of it ends up as sparkling wine. patience is a virtue here because this year's wine won't be released for four years. >> i heard that. first of all, you have to wait that long for a drink you're making. and secondly, does that mean it's rotten grape juice? >> you would think that, right? >> you found out when you turned 21. >> i get it now. >> yeah, a great weekend ahead in some of those vineyards and
5:19 am
enjoying some of the cooler weather we're going to see this weekend. as we take a live look outside this morning, we're still monitoring the air quality. still going to be hazy today. and there will be some off and on smoke. if you smell that smoke, you may need to limit your time outside. check out the seven-day forecast. it's already up at the bottom of the screen. as we make our way out the door in san jose, heading to maybe diridon station, it's going to be until 9:00, once the skies clear, we'll see the temperatures heading into the low 70s. if you're planning to go out for a jog around brentwood, our temperatures will shape up nicely, and it doesn't matter what time you head out for a workout. it's going to be much more comfortable than we have seen earlier this month. as we look at our south bay temperatures, mostly low 80s for the south county and downtown san jose. 79 degrees for the high temperature today. and 74 in hayward. we're also seeing 74 in vallejo today and up to 72 in san mateo.
5:20 am
san francisco, 65 on the embarcadero, and the outer sunset today in the lower 60s. 78 today in santa rosa and in napa. if you're going to napa this weekend, we're going to stay in the upper 70s and even slightly cooler on sunday, but still keep in mind that there will be drifts of smoke as you spend lots of time outside, you may want to find yourself going inside for a little while. we're going to talk about that weekend forecast a little more coming up in about 20 minutes. follow me on facebook and twitter. you may get a personalized forecast. you can't hang out that long, and also weather updates on my social media pages. we're looking at mid 80s for the weekend in some of our warmer spots, and also nice in san francisco, but staying cool. you probably need a jacket all day long. mike says it's looking good on the highways. >> it is, of course, it's only 5:20, so we expect a lighter flow of traffic. but a smooth flow of traffic. we have seen more surface street traffic throughout san jose. san jose state coming online
5:21 am
this week. a lot more surface streets through downtown and 280, but right now, easy drive there. also easy, great flow of traffic throughout the east bay. contra costa county, no problems. across the carquinez, and this slowdown continues to get better and better as the construction crews clear from their various work. they were grinding down the payment. they continue to repair the roadways and that means overnight slows and lane restrictions. all better now. over here, we see the slowdown only resulted in a 20-minute drive. this has been improving over the last ten minutes through the east shore freeway. the toll plaza backup starting to build now. we should see the metering lights turned on any second. light volume through san rafael. back to you. >> thanks. 5:21 right now. coming up here on today in the bay, solar panel uproar? all new overnight, the reason some neighbors are upset about the new addition at a palo alto elementary school. >> and follow me on twitter.

5:26 am
demanding the panels be removed. the they're now looking for a workable solution. >> some north bay school students will be greeted with buwaynes dias. the program is offered at midwood elementary school, with pre-k, kindergarten, and first grade, and the school will add a grade each year as the kids move on. >> 5:26 right now. coming up, we have two breaking stories. scary moments at a fremont warm springs b.a.r.t. station. the new information we're learning about the stagging there over night. >> and in the south side, the search for answers after a suspishing fire at a san jose cafe. we're live with the investigation into what happened. two breaking stories we

following at this a busy thursday morning. two breaking stories we're following. a stabbing at a popular east bay b.a.r.t. station, and a suspicious fire under way. investigation in a south bay cafe. we're live at both scenes to bring you the latest information. first want to say good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. first, we want to get a look at what to expect as you head out the door. kari hall with a look at the forecast. >> another cloudy one with a live look outside in palto alto. as you get ready to head out the door, we're going to feel cool temperatures and low 60s starting out. and those clouds will linger through at least about noon here
5:30 am
and then seeing sunshine for the afternoon. we make that morning commute to morgan hill where our temperatures will be cooler there to start with. some upper 50s, and then we'll see it warming up pretty fast. we'll be in the upper 60s around noon, but staying comfortable throughout the day. we'll talk about what's ahead for the weekend as we enjoy a nice little cooldown around the bay area. and mike, you were saying a crowd has gathered in oakland. >> a euphemism for a backup at the toll plaza. on the oakland side, indeed, a backup for all lanes there going back for the fast track lanes the farthest, but the cash lanes are filled to the end. that's not unusual. as we look at the map, we see a smooth drive. but just a few minutes late for the construction zone through el cerrito. results in a slowdown sticking around. starting back in san pablo, so keep it in mind. speeds in the 50s, maybe the upper 40s at their worst right now as the crowd starts to build. once you get past richmond and

golden gate field, you're fine to the bay bridge toll plaza. a little slowing in san jose, and that's not unusual. in the south bay, another couple breaking news items. >> thanks. mike. >> 5:30, and that breaking news we're talking about coming from the warm springs b.a.r.t. station in fremont. that's where police are investigating an overnight stabbing. >> bob redell has been bringing us updates since we went on air at 4:30 this morning. anything new, bob? >> well, good morning to you. yes, we have an update on the victim. we know he's expected to survive. we're here at warm springs b.a.r.t. station where police have two crime scenes. this is on property just outside the station in the parking lot. we believe this is where the man was stabbed around 2:30 this morning. as you're zooming in, you'll see there's two motorcycles. one upright and the other on the ground. the other on the ground, crime scene techs were taking photos of, so we believe that has to do with whatever altercation took place last night, and police
5:32 am
also have a section of warm springs boulevard shut down in front of the station where there was at least one object in the middle of the road. don't know if that was belonged to the victim, but as i mentioned, around 2:30 this morning, this man, an adult man was stabbed in the chest and in the rear end. they're minor stab wounds and b.a.r.t. has informed us these are non-life threatening injuries. he's expected to survive. i did speak with a b.a.r.t. police lieutenant and he tells us there are security cameras here that they have been looking at. they haven't indicated whether or not the cameras picked up anything, but they'll look at that for suspect information, and try to track that person down. as you can imagine right now, that person has not been arrested. just have the one man who was stabbed out there. we don't know what led up to this altercation. if you are coming here to go to work this morning, this is not impacting the train service. b.a.r.t. warm springs is up and running and you can still access the station even though the one
5:33 am
section of warm springs boulevard is shut down. reporting live here in fremont, bob redell. >> hoping they find that suspect. good thing the victim is doing okay. thanks, bob. all right, been a busy morning out there. we also have a live look in south san jose where firefighters are at the scene of a fire at a cafe near monterey and tully roads. now they're trying to determine if someone set it on purpose. it started around 3:00 a.m. at cafe paradise. kris sanchez spoke with the cafe owner who believes the cafe was intentionally set on fire. he said the business was targeted before. arson investigators remain at the scene. we're following developments. kris will join us with a live report at the top of the hour. at 5:33 now, to the developing story of the killing of mollie tibbetts in iowa. >> friends and family came out to mourn the 24-year-old on the campus of the university of iowa last night. tibbetts grew up in the east bay along with her brothers. last night, one of her brothers
5:34 am
spoke about his sister. >> the stories you've all heard about mollie, they're incredible. she was incredible. and we're going to miss her dearly. >> the "today" show's ron mott is live in iowa with new details we're learning about the suspect. it's his immigration status causing that big debate? >> turned into a national debate. a lot of questions now about whether this individual was in this country legally or not. and so we just got a statement, i want to read you from the u.s. citizenship and immigration services. a spokesperson, i quote, a search of records by uscis revealed rivera, the suspect in this case, did not make any daca requests nor were any grants given. we have found now record in our system indicating he has any lawful immigration status. the president not once but twice since he was named and arrested as the suspect in this case, has weighed in on this debate,
5:35 am
saying it's time to build a wall along the southern border. we asked people in town how they felt about the president pushing this political agenda at a time of sorrow and tragedy in the scomunt. we got really split opinions on that. some who were put off by what the president said, were adamant they thought it was improperly for him to bring that issue up, and others who tended to support the president's sentiment eventually told us they support what he said and that they are bothered that there may be people in this community who should not be in their community, who do not have proper legal authority to be here. that's going to be a percolating issue, we think, as the story continues to unfold. yesterday, we saw cristhian rivera in court for the first time. he showed little emotion as the judge was advising him of his rights. he listened through the proceedings with an interpreter at her side. i did ask his former employer whether he speaks passable english and the employer says yes, he does, in fact speak some
5:36 am
english. we also learn the employers said he did not give them that name when he applied for a job with them over four years ago. they always knew him as someone else though he would not say what the name was that was given to him. a lot of moving parts in the investigation. a community, as you might imagine, still reeling from this unspeakable tragedy in this small iowa town. >> of course, and here in the bay area, too. >> tragic story. ron, thanks. we'll look for your full report on the "today" show this morning. >> also happening today, attorneys for jose inez garcia zurata will debate the changes and chances of a federal trial against him. federal attorneys fired gun charges against zarate last year shortly after jurors in san francisco found him guilty only on the least serious charges in connection with a deadly shooting of kate steinle on pier 14. according to the examiner, today's hearing focuses on a looming case in the u.s. supreme court tied to double jeopardy
5:37 am
for federal and state cases. depending on that decision, zarate's attorneys may argue to dismiss his federal case. new this morning, actor kevin spacey facing another sexual assault allegation. all l.a. county prosecutors are saying is the incident happened in october of 2016, and they're investigating. this is the second sexual assault allegation against kevin spacey. the first one dates back to 1992. he's also under investigation in six cases in london. more infighting among santa clara county leaders. the mercury news is reporting the city council has admonished fellow council members for failing to appoint someone to replace dominic cucerta. he resigned after he was accused of sexual harassment, which he denied. now mayor lisa gilmore and her supporters have reprimanded two other council members for waiting until the election to replace him rather than selecting one now.
5:38 am
the admonishment is merely a symbolic action. all right, more than just symbols we're looking at sensors -- i guess they symbolize slower traffic. coming through the area, san pablo down to golden gate field for west 80. but traffic getting over to the richmond-san rafael bridge is fine. the bay bridge toll plaza, a predictable backup from the berkeley curve, and really the only other spot is san jose with more slowing northbound 101. i'll show you where the sensors are, right by our camera. you see a good amount of traffic traveling north. we had the first burst of travel here, no surprises as we come through the area. a little slowing through san martin as well and looking at a good volume at 101. here's the north bay. san rafael picks up a little volume coming out of the north bay. keep thinking about the story we talked about, kari talked about wine tasting, you talked about wine tasting. >> a big harvest in the east bay today. >> now i'm looking forward. >> exactly.
5:39 am
you could test some of the vineyards across the bay area. >> weather looks amazing this weekend. it was kind of hot for the valleys last weekend. this weekend, we'll bring you down to 85 degrees. and so that's going to feel a lot more comfortable. the bay at 80 degrees, and still cool for the coast with mid 60s. more of the same on sunday, so we're going to enjoy a lot of sunshine. you may be kicking off the weekend on friday at music in the park in san jose. this is the last one of the series. you want to make sure you get out there early, get your spots. temperatures in the upper 70s, and then cooling down into the upper 60s later on in the evening. we also have the festival of the arts in palo alto. this happening on saturday and sunday as we feature saturday's forecast, we'll start out with low 60s and then with the sunshine, we'll make it into the low 70s. really nice there as well. and then you may be wrapping up the weekend with silicon valley pride festival and the parade on sunday. we'll be at about 62 degrees at 10:00 in the morning. very comfortable, and we'll keep

5:44 am
