a rescue helicopter sped above highway 101. rescuers trying to get the saved groves to the hospital in santa barbara hoping there was still time to save her. the baby, mylo had just been pulled out of her car seat in surprisingly, good condition. but then it was time for kelli to come out. this would be painful with that fractured pelvis. >> and greg had standing on this forklift over this drop off, maneuvermy feet to get it around the metal and they were lifting me from the top and he was pushing me down from the bottom. >> lifting and pushing. her pelvis was damaged. you couldn't pull or lift too much. >> and i remember it -- the pain was not too much to handle because i -- it was worth every ounce of pain i felt to get out

of there. >> then, on the way to the hospital, she got a reassurance. >> when they put me in the ambulance, the para medic r.j. and i'm here to help you. laying on the stretcher i said that was my dad's name. >> kelli's father died suddenly a few months before the accident, but somehow, she felt like he was still with her as she arrived at the hospital desperate for news about her daughter. mylo was okay, but sage's leg was crushed, her pelvis was broken, her head severely swollen and those were just the apparent injuries. the surgeons were already working on her and still, kelli's husband jason having said good-bye to them eight hours before was utterly unaware what happened to his wife and daughters. kelli asked the hospital to call him at home. >> the mercy room doctor said is this jason groves.

i said yes, this is. he's like well, your wife and your daughter were in a car accident. >> the doctors soft pedal the details and jason said he told him everyone was all right but sage was in surgery and he needed to come now. he spoke with kelli's sister. >> jason was stunned. i think he didn't -- he was very focused on getting there. i think he needed to see for himself. >> jason drove to cottage hospital where jason was shocked to learn that sage was still in surgery. how can she be in surgery? so i go down to the surgery room an everything and they won't let me in. the doors are shut and >> jason kept vigil for hi another, sage began bleeding internally. the source her severely broken pelvis. back to surgery. it was in the middle of this a blurry eyed jason noticed a newspaper.

fire and online and in our 11:00 newscast tonight. as we all know, fires that have been burning over the past month led to bad air quality but it's appearing to get better. let's bring in meteorologist rob miata. take one bad fire to turn this around? >> we watched the fire there, the cash fire, you can see temperatures in the 60s, w of e the west but most of the smoke for now is heading off towards the east. you notice around the bay area, improving visibility but during the day tomorrow, we can begin to see things change courtesy of the north bay fires up around lake county. past noon, watch what happens through the afternoon. smoke model forecast, it starts to bring more smoke into the north bay and begins to drop it in across the central bay coast. so skies did clear today but i think you'll begin to notice around the north bay tomorrow, we'll begin to see more smoke

the madden shows him as the championship winner it's unclear if it's the same david katz identified today. it's that game that brings this story to the bay area. the game was developed by a redwood city company and named for bay area sports legend. mary ann favro is live with details. mary >> reporter: electronic arts just released a new statement condemning today 's violence. the company released the new madden 19 game this month and already, similar tournaments are being played throughout the bay area. the shooting rampage began as players gathered in a pizza restaurant for an nfl video tournament. the gunman a gamer himself, 24-year-old david katz opened

fire killing two and himself as the horror played out online. some witnesses say katz was eliminated from the tournament. similar tournaments are often held here. supervisor john says while no competitions have ever turned violent, tensions can escalate. >> people definitely get upset sometimes with video games. they want to be the best. we never havee occasionally there will be somebody who might say a bad word or lash out on an opponent but we try to make sure they are calm. >> reporter: they were playing madden 19 this month. it's developed by electronic arts head quartered here in redwood city. the company said we're aware of an incident at a sanction mad den championship series in jacksonville. we're working with authorities to gather facts at this stage. this is a horrible situation and our deepest sympathies go out to all involved.

today's tournament in jacksonville, florida offered $5,000 in prizes and tonight many are asking security be beefed up in future tournaments to prevent another mass reporting live, mary ann favro. >> thank you very much. these video game tournaments often draw a big fan base and sometimes big cash prizes. the series has up to 7 million dedicated fans who flock to these cash tournaments called madden cash tournaments. the tournament in jacksonville was a qualifier that came with a reported $5,000 cash prize for the winner. according to e.a. sports, madden nfl is popular among nfl players that help their abilities on the field. the game is named on john madden

there. here we're still focused on the wildfire smoke and unusually cool temperatures ahead through the middle part of the week. outside now, sfo, no delays. that's been nice. 58 degrees and patchy low clouds setting up for tomorrow morning and emeryville seeing patches of low clouds close to high today . 63 right now and we'll see a few more low clouds tomorrow morning. here is the view of the air quality now. it was last week, we were off the charts for spare the air. unhealthy for everybody. that was the case late last week. right now, we're seeing moderate levels of air pollution and briefly tomorrow stay tuned during the afternoon we might see another surge of some smoke here out of the north bay that could drop into the central bay. nothing to spare the air levels but i don't think the air will be quite as clean or as clear as we saw outside today.

for moderate smoke again for the north bay, bay and coast but late day, east bay, you're going to watch the forecast here through the afternoon as a bit of a northwest wind could bring more smoke. for the morning, this is a typical pattern of low clouds and misty skies and sunshine for the afternoon and pattern will keep a sea breeze attached to it with temperatures in the 50s in the morning and as we head through the afternoon, surprisingly cool for this time of year. upper 70s to near 80. 80s around thvalley. near 70 in oakland. 72 hayward and upp70s for the ne we get away from san francisco, which is 60 to 70 out nusuly mi time of year. the pattern has high pressure to the west is allowing low pressure dropping down to the east and over the next few days, we will see rain and the pacific

northwest to the middle part of the week for the bay area, looks like drizzle could start to measure up along the docoast an san francisco, we might see a little bit. not real rain but misty skies which could make a bit of a difference in the forecast as you see there. a bigger impact on the temperatures for the valleys as we move forward. san francisco not much change so the end of the week might see temperatures climbing into the 60s but valleys could easily be in the 80s and 90s, tough to hit 85. probably get there by friday but for the next two to three days, cool and breezy conditions. the thing to watch obviously will be some of that smoke co-that coucothat could come out of the north bay. we'll watch that closely. >> thank you protesting a supreme court nominee. up next, the message from demonstrators in san francisco and across the country for brett kavanau kavanaugh. valley and dublin in

turned around and looked and after the second, third, fourth shot everyone took off and ran for the exit. >> reporter: an entertainment complex along the city's riverfront. witnesses ran for cover. >> i seen somebody on the ground. i seen a body on the ground. i seen a kid with blood all over him. >> reporter: police say three were killed including the shooter. >> three deceased individuals at the scene. one of those being the suspect who took his own life. there were nine victims transported by jfrd to area hospitals. seven had gunshot wounds. in addition, there were two additional gunshot victims that self-transformed themselves to local hospitals. >> reporter: authorities released few details about a motive but believe they have identified the gunman. >> we believe the suspect to be 24-year-old david catch. >> reporter: while authorities continue the investigation, the community must cope with tragedy. >> i couldn't believe it. i thought i was still dreaming because i never in my life

elementary school. investigators say the 24-year-old farm worker that killed her led them to her body to the vatican after a 36-hour visit to ireland where he drew large crowds and large protests. many say pope francis has not done enough to address the issue of clergy l abuse of children. a former top official says in 2013 he told pope francis about serious allegations against a u.s. cardinal and for five years pope francis did nothing about it. the allegations are made in a 7,000-word letter in which he calls for the pope to resign. the vatican is offering no comment on those allegations. nbc news could not confirm authenticity or claims. pope francis issued a sweeping apology in ireland today asking for forgiveness for the sexual abuse scandal and others quote betrayal of irish catholics by

because all the athletes differ in levels and ability. >> and what a beautiful day to be out there to do it. back with a look at a cooling trend. this issis unusual for august. >> better air quality, which was nice for all those weekend plans outdoors. right now we're seeing something that's typical for august with the return of the low clouds and fog at night. that's the view. looking to the south 54 and temperatures earlier today in the low 60s and right n downtown san francisco. youot temperatures in the upper 50s, a high of 66 degrees today. and basically copy and paste that across the bottom of the screen. seven-day forecast not showing a lot of change around san francisco and the coast and san jose 78 and currently 63 and air quality for tomorrow we're going to have to watch the north bay and i think the central bay may be part of east bay for the afternoon. overall the air quality picture looks better than last week but

as we look at one of our near surface smoke models, domorw lo looks good around noon but watch towards the afternoon and evening. upper level winds my transport in a little more smoke from the north. that's somet we'llave to wathe week. really. air quality across parts ofreso. temperatures not the issue for the morning, this isn't smoke, this is the return of the low clouds and a good indicator how far inland the push will be. look how the low clouds go through all the way into sacramento to the north. that's a good push of marine air with drizzle and probably some misty skies around san francisco and oakland for the morning. as we go through the afternoon, sunshine inland and hazy skies watching for smoke maybe dropping in from the north but our temperatures here over the next few days may actually trend cooler across some of the inland valleys. so morning temperatures tomorrow, mid to upper 50s, similar to outside now and
