the hawaiian team just captured the little league championship. >> i'm phillip mena. >> i'm frances rivera. a gunman opened fire during a video game tournament until jacksonville, florida, killing three people including himself. one witness barricaded inside a bathroom, along with dozens of others, trying to escape the shooter. >> everybody was freaking out. >> what were people saying? >> the adrenaline at the time, i think a couple people mentioned their kids. a couple people were just like -- i don't know exactly. i just know a couple people panicked and i told them god's got our back. >> the sheriff has identified the shooter as david katz, 24 of baltimore. they did confirm he was in town for the nfl ma den 19 competition. the first shots appeared to ring

out from the video tournament. nbc's dan shanman has the latest. we want to warn you somehe vide >> competitors flock to jacksonville to compete in the video game tournament. >> the first shot everyone look, and after the second, third and fourth shot everyone ran for the exit. >> authorities converged on the scene, witnesses ran for cover. >> i seen somebody on the ground. i seen a body on the ground. i seen a kid with blood all over him. >> reporter: police say three people were killed, including the shooter. >> three deceased individuals at the scene. one of those being the suspect who took his own live. there were nine victims transported to area hospitals, seven of those had gun shot wounds. in addition there were two vict

hospital. >> reporter: authorities didn't release details on the motive. a community must now cope with tragedy. >> i couldn't believe it. i thought i was still dreaming because i never in my life thought this would happen in jacksonville. >> reporter: jacksonville the latest american city to be touched by violence. this morning the nation remembers a maverick. arizona senator john mccain died saturday night of brain cancer. the war hero who became a giant in american politics was 81 years old. at the white house, the flag flying at half staff in honor to his six decades of service to his country. tributes pouring in from around the world.

arizona may have said it best, calling him a hell of a leader. he will be laid to rest at the u.s. naval cemetery. kelly mcdaniel is live. >> reporter: under the blistering phoenix sun, flags are lowered, respect shown in the small gestures of flowers and messages left outside senator john mccain's state office. >> i'm here to honor john mccain. >> an honor guard outside the phoenix funeral home. volunteers to plan to remain near the services here. served oay for a you think of multi-day service. >> john mccain is irreplaceable. this week will be about honoring his life and legacy, and comforting the family.

>> reporter: congressional leaders announced that the six-term senator would become only the 30th american to lie in state in the u.s. rotunda. like former presidents and statesmen. >> america is mourning, the world is mourning the loss of one of the truly great men. >> reporter: senator chuck schumer is urging lawmakers to rename a senate building in his honor. >> it's the most majestic senate building and i think there would be widespread support for naming that building after senator mccain, a fitting tribute. >> reporter: his commitment to troops around the world and gratitude. >> no one hadhe those legacy is civility, dignity and honor. >> it's tough. going to miss him. >> reporter: defeats, however painful, did not diminish

hundred dollars attended a funeral service for mowly tibts. her father said it was time to turn the page and urged attendees to remember her passion for life rather than the tragic way she died. >> her dad said we all have to heel, that molly would want everyone to move on and turn the page and be positive. eight people are dead, including six children, after a blaze tore through an apartment building in chicago. the fire broke out in the predawn hours. officials say a woman arriving home from work noticed it and warned people to escape. >> the person who came in and made the initial call also st t started knocking on doors that there was a fire. so they started to self-evacuate as the fire companies got on the scene. so this female who did that saved a lot of lives.
