7:06 am
>> we can do this. >> i was going to say, you're going to speak on the senate floor today about your friend. i know you loved him. >> yeah. >> should we bring our tissues? >> well, i'm going to bring mine. his desk is right by mine, and that's what i can't look. so, in the military, after a mission is over, an operation ends, you do an after-action report. so, i'm going to go back to what i know best, how would you describe the after-action report of john mccain's lif i think it's going to be pretty interesting. >> i want to get your take. obviously, there's no love lost between senator mccain and this president. he wasn't invited to his funeral. the president denigrated his war service, said heroes don't get captured. then was the back-and-forth yesterday with the raising of the flags, the lowering of the flags. did any of that irk you at all? as john mccain's good friend, not as a fellow u.s. senator, but as a good friend, did it bother you at all that the president of the united states seemed to slight him? >> well, i think mark had it right yesterday when he was talking about let's talk about john.
7:07 am
it is all over now. the flag is down. when the president mentioned john, he got applause. i hope he will remember how people feel about john. john kelly, the chief of staff, has been terrific. he's reached out to cindy, the entire family. john has seven children and a bunch of grandchildren, and says what can i do to help, and the president told general kelly, whatever they need, they get. so, let's look forward. clearly, they had a contentious relationship, but i'll make a -- he's not the only one to have a tense relationship with john mccain. >> well, that leads me to my next question, because you, i always thought of you and senator mccain as like batman and robin. you guys were thick as thieves -- >> it's hard to be robin. batman is a tough act. >> and it used to be like there was no daylight between you, really, on anything. you certainly have become closer to president trump in the last year. there is no question that senator mccain did not respect many of the things that president trump has done and
7:08 am
said, particularly on the world stage. was that ever a source of tension? did you and senator mccain ever talk about that? did he ever say, hey, wait a minute, what happened? >> help him where you can. you know, after 2008, when we lost, john lost, and he turned to the country and said, he's my president now. to barack obama. he healed the nation. he's a fighter, but he could forgive. he was tortured as a prisoner but led the way to reconcile with vietnam. some will remember that about john. and i don't have the luxury of playing like barack obama -- excuse me, donald trump's not president. i do want to help him. i want to be a bridge where i can. >> so senator mccain never got mad at you about that? >> oh, no. there's -- it wouldn't have mattered. i'd have done it anyway. i'm too much like him. so, the bottom line is, john has shown that it's not about you. country first means that even if it's inconvenient for you and it makes you uncomfortable, you do
7:09 am
it anyway. country first hurts, but it's the right way to go. and this man was the conscience of the senate. he was at times the conscience of the nation. and if i had to pick one person in this great land to explain to someone from a different planet, who are these americans, it would be john mccain with an assist from mark salter. he had a romantic view of our nation to his last breath, and literally, almost the last thing he said to me was, "i love you. i have not been cheated." he was not cheated. >> he was very, very grateful. we talk about senator mccain -- i see a tear in your eye. >> yeah, like, you know, he was five cats, man. he had like 45 lives. he crashed five airplanes. he's a black ace. he's been in five airplane crashes of ours. i cannot tell you, when he speaks, people listen. to stay relevant all those
7:10 am
years. his colleagues, he would say the most awful things and later be able to forgive and forget. he's talking to ted kennedy right now -- can you believe what they're saying about me after what i did to them? >> i guess that's why i -- you know, it's funny, because republicans, democrats, i mean, he made everyone mad, but everybody respected him. except for it seems like our president didn't respect him. i mean, let me play you just the sound -- in the oval office, let me just play it for you. i'm not trying to put you on the spot, but just take a look at this. >> mr. president, any thoughts on john mccain? >> thank you, everybody. >> mr. president, any thoughts on john mccain, sir? >> thank you. right this way. everyone's moving. thanks, everybody. let's go this way. >> mr. president, any thoughts on the legacy of john mccain? >> you didn't see his face, but i'm sure you've seen the clip. >> yeah. i just think the president finally got to where he needs to be, and we're going to talk about john. how the president feels about senator mccain is his right to feel any way he'd like. i know how america feels about senator mccain. i know how the senate feels
7:11 am
about senator mccain. i know how the world feels about senator mccain. and i know this, i love john mccain. having said that, to president trump, if you want my help, i will gladly give it, but i'll also tell you what i think. >> while you're here, i want to talk to you about another news item here. another fellow senator, one-time senator jeff sessions, who is now the attorney general. >> right. >> you said something last week that i think caught a lot of folks off guard. i want to play that and also play what you said last year about jeff sessions. here it is. >> sure. >> if jeff sessions is fired, there will be holy hell to pay. every president deserves an attorney general they have confidence in. i believe every president has the right to their cabinet. these are not lifetime appointments. you serve at the pleasure of the president. >> the president has been railing against his attorney general. >> you've noticed. >> yes. and your tune seems to have changed a bit on jeff sessions. >> yeah. >> why? what happened between july of
7:12 am
2017 and last week? >> good question. one, i was a big supporter of jeff being attorney general. he was close to the president. he helped the president when no one else did. he was a highly qualified lawyer, a good senator. and i was afraid that when he recused himself, the president was going to strike out and fire the guy. he had to recuse himself because he was part of the campaign has now being investigated. but we need an attorney general that can work with the president, that can lead the department of justice. this relationship is beyond repair, i think. >> senator graham, the only beef the president seems to have against him is that he's not going to get rid of the investigation into president trump. >> let me finish the second part. it's much deeper than that. >> what else? what are we missing? >> well, we won't say on this show, but it's a pretty deep breach, and here's what i'm suggesting, that he's not the only man in the country that can be attorney general. he's a fine man. i'm not asking him to be fired,
7:13 am
but the relationship's not worki working. to replace him -- please. to replace him, you have to replace him with somebody who is highly qualified and will commit to the senate to allow mueller to do his job. >> that was my next question. if you were chosen to be attorney general or were faced with someone in your committee who was chosen to replace jeff sessions, would you insist that they vow that they let it go forward? >> nobody is going to take jeff's place that doesn't commit to the senate and the country as a whole that mueller will be allowed to finish his job without political interference. >> to be clear, the president's lost confidence in jeff sessions, and so has lindsey graham? >> the president's lost confidence in jeff sessions, and i'm telling you what everybody in the country knows -- this is a dysfunctional relationship. we need a better one. is there somebody who's highly qualified that has the confidence of the president, will also understand their job is to protect mueller? yes, i think we can find that person after the election, if that's what the president wants.
7:14 am
>> can i ask you one thing, because you are now, i think, a confidante of president trump. has it ever occurred to you -- >> depends on what day. >> ha! >> depends on the day, fair enough. >> maybe this afternoon maybe so much. go ahead. >> here there's this investigation. it obviously irks him. >> yeah, it does. >> but is he making it worse by, you know, like waking up in the middle of the night and writing "no collusion" and "rigged witch hunt" and all that? what if he just said, look, i know nothing like this happened in my campaign. i want the best investigation there can be because i know it's going to clear me and be done with it and let me know how it turns out? >> you ask the same question my driver asked, can you ask him to stop tweeting? he's 72 years old. he believes he didn't collude with the russians. he knows he didn't collude with the russians. he thinks they're out to get him. he sees the doj and the fbi being very biased against him. he firmly believes this is a political retribution. here's what i believe about mueller. he's a fine man. he's not on a witch hunt. let him do his job.
7:15 am
i've seen no evidence of collusion. but i can do a lot of things on behalf of the nation, but i am not going to be able to convince donald trump to be quiet about this, but i am committed to allow mueller to do his job. and at the end of the day, if there is collusion between the trump campaign and the russians, that will be it for me. anything else will be just noise. >> all right. senator graham, always good to see you. >> thank you. >> we're so sorry for your loss. >> good luck today. >> thank you very much. >> thank you, sir. meanwhile, the unofficial end of summer less than a week away, but you would not know it from the weather. the heat and the humidity are back and they are back in a big way across the eastern half of this country. mr. roker's here to tell us just how hot it's going to get today. hey there, al. >> thank you, craig. we've got new numbers just in as far as the number of people suffering from a heat advisory and heat warning. 68 million people, st. louis, detroit, rochester, d.c., philly, new york city, and boston. philly's not in that, but boston is. and the summer heat is going to continue. as it pushes up into our area,

8:36 am
growing towards our potential. what's great about that is you can feel that joy in the midst of life's ups and downs. childbirth is not necessarily a pleasurable experience and yet it's extremely joyful because it's so meaningful. >> that's one of the things i know you emphasize. you can be happy but happiness can co-exist with other emotions. >> that's what so many people misunderstood. they think the opposite of happiness is unhappiness. unhappiness is great change, tells us when there's injustice, when we're lonely and need to reach out to other people. opposite of happiness is apathy, the loss of belief your behavior matters at all or change is possible. seeing happiness that fuels positive change. >> we both took this quiz, lots of other folks taking it as well. let's take a look at some of the findings. i was surprised by some of the findings. first up -- >> 34% of people scored moderate

to low happy. does that surprise you, moderate to low, most people. what's your advice to those folks in that category. >> what we suggest in that category is to make a small one-second behavioral change. oftentimes when we're feeling down -- >> one second. >> one second. when we're feeling down we forget our power to make those changes and how it can impact our happiness. we call it directing your focus. it's finding three people, strangers, perhaps, and just consciously smiling at them to create that connection and widen your circle. we actually did this at a hospital system and trained the staff to smile at people as they are walking through the hallways. what's amazing is that patients perceived care skyrocketed and doctors reported the happiest they had been in a decade. >> how interesting to just kind of force your self but it jump starts those happy feelings. >> it does. >> 18% received moderate to high score. what's the lesson for those folks. >> one of the things we're learning about as your energy rises, more things. one of the things we wanted
8:38 am
people to do was to be more grateful, practice it. 99% of people think they are grateful but they don't practice it within their lives. what we found in positive psychology, for 45 seconds a day you thought of three new things you're grateful for, did this for 21 days in a row. 20 people low level happiness, now optimist. we're married researchers. we try to do this with our four-year-old. we have a glass jor we keep in our kitchen, as we write down things in our life that we're grateful for we roll them up and put them in the jar. you start to see it rise. even if you're not reading them, they are growing. >> we have a four-year-old. >> so much we forgot about, we focus on the negative. >> it is. the final category, 32% and i would say it's us. we're happy because we got an a on the happiness quiz. just kidding.
8:39 am
we're both generally happy. 32% said happy. okay, i'm pretty happy. what do you do? there's always room for improvement. >> no, we're as happy as we can be. >> you maxed out. in this case you want to supermodel the happiness, give it to other people. we recommend doing a random act of kindness, something small to someone else. what's great about this also, it takes the focus off of our own happiness and allows it to fuel other's happiness and creates a feedback loop. >> has happiness you share it. >> social connection. as soon as you do something nice for somebody else, it creates a bond. when that happens, turns out social connection greatest prediction of long-term happiness and social connection is predictive of how long you end up living, obesity, high blood pressure or smoking. creating the positive can be just as powerful as stopping the negative. >> the takeaway, you've got to work at it. >> daily. >> thank you. back to your happy lives. by the way, our journey toward
