a serious crash here possibly involving drugs and alcohol. the driver was transported to a hospital. you can see why chp is investigating this. there was at least one beer bottle, a bottle of booze and a number of canisters there. officers were collecting those marijuana canisters. u.s. department of transportation we leased ads targeting drug drivers with the message drive high get a dui.

it shows 42% of people showed some sort of impairing drugs in their system. an oakland company has developed a marijuana breathalyzer to help law enforcement crack down on drunk drivers. it can detect it within three hours of consumption. >> we have developed a new scientific approach that allows us to measure very small particles of thc.

capitol rotunda, a man described as an american hero. nbc news, washington. >> our rooif coverage begins at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. nbc's chuck todd is anchoring from the national cathedral in washington. back here in san francisco students will be back in class this morning at the city's balboa high school after day after an incident that sparked serious fear and panic. >> one student had a handgun in his backpack when it suddenly fired. no one was hit. they say this was a scary moment f for a lot of those students. the school went on lock down for two hours. parents and students called it two terrifying hours. >> i started texting him. he said he was scared. i just told him i love him.

>> the teacher said to be quiet. if we made any noise the people that were in the hallways couldn't know where we were. >> and other police made four arrests and one student did get injured during the incident but not from the gunfire. the district says there will be extra counselors on hand today. >> and we are learning more about the minutes before a plane crash in southern california earlier this month. the plane took off in concord and crash landed in santa ana parking lot on august 5th. five people on board died there. four of them were from the east bay. a preliminary report says that the pilot said emergency three times before crashing. the reports did not list a possible cause for that crash. it did say there was good weather and visibility in the area. happening today a man charged there a bart station assault that authorities say lead to the death of another man is expected to appear in court

this morning. that altercation happened in july. investigators say the man who died suffered a small cut to his leg that later became infected and that's what killed him. the man arrested is scheduled to be arraigned today. at 5:08 check out this video coming into our news room from police. this woman is doing what everyone does. she is checking her phone at a downtown bus stop. the car pulled in. a teenager gets in and grabs the phone and gets back in the car. she goes after it and gets dragged far bit. police arrested the driver and suspect thanks to this surveillance video. >> got to look up every once there a while. it reminds me, i tend to kind of look down as i'm on my phone. a good reminder there. today's forecast will be once again still below seasonable. this will set us up for a warming trend into the weekend.

they will announce the apple iphone 10s. it is kind of hard to make out. it is a picture of two phones stacked on top of each other in a new color, gold. today the deadline for canada to set the trade agreement that he made with mexico as well. all of this will have to be okayed by congress. not enough time to get it in front of the current set of lawmakers. expect an announcement on this today. google home device can switch between languages on the fly. choose two and talk to it in whatever language you wush. this using amazon alexa as voice service. if you're into gadgets you'll understand it is basically an echo all smashed into one.

compare today the patchy cloud cover is the dense fog. look at this shot in san francisco. this is actually live. yes, this is where the city line t is. you can't really tell because fog is covering a lot of those buildings. let's see what it looks like. you can see the fog really hugging the coastline. this made its way in through hayward, areas of patchy fog as well. the reason for that is because of that fog. keeping our temperatures a little bit cooler. you highs for today though will climb into the upper 70s and low 80s for the south bay. it is 73 for oakland. further into the tri-valley we will r going to expect upper 80s. it is 86 through danville. as far as the peninsula goes keep in mind it's always a little breezy along the coast. into the city upper 60s at 68

through the north bay. 83 for sonoma at about 81 degrees. as far as your air quality we are dealing with light haze out there and moderate air quality. fortunately for us it would be worse if the smoke is expected to be over nevada. for the most part we are doing a lot better than we were about a week achlgt over the next seven days here is is a look at what you can expect heading in towards saturday and sunday. we'll notice more clearing in terms of the skies. it will get pbetter inland area as well. are you ready? >> i am. i am. we had that light labor day approach. a lot of folks aren't going in today. we have a lot of crashes to worry about. this is on 680. so you will slow. it is a light build because of

the light flow of traffic we have been talking about. another crash here is highway 4. it is a crash that occurred about 20 minutes ago. it is heading up towards antioch. that bridge repair work cleared. highway 4 no slowing shows up. another disabled vehicle coming in towards pittsburgh. it may be an issue. i think it will clear very quickly. no problem out of the north bay. the rest of cocoa county looks great. we'll watch to see if they have to turn the metering lights on. right now no back up at the toll plaza. a great flow of traffic on the roads. no delays reported. monday is a holiday. all weekend bart will have buses replaces a few portions of the oakland line. back to you. >> all of that grief looks good. thanks. coming up, end of an era.

once again similar weather pattern. by 12:00 things will start warming up. san jose temperature will climb into the 80s. we are starting a bit of a warming trend just in time for the weekend. is there a friday light commute going on? >> not just friday light, but everybody look. no back up. no metering lights. preholiday friday, an early kplut very very light. you start thinking about midday late morning. we'll skip around town and go in towards the office and head out for the north bay. a little slowing shows up. we'll see how it shapes up.

ac system caught fire. flames were knocked out quickly. the cause still under investigation and it's not clear how much damage the building sustained. he reached out to fire for more details. we'll pass it along as soon as they contact them. crimes are slowing after more close calls with bad guys trying to break into homes. neighbors are coming together and police say they are ready take more action. >> today in the bay is live for us in willow glenn. i know we have been reporting on these for weeks now. what do people really want? >> they want to get back to the day where the unofficial slogan is actually through but after 22 arrests in two weeks here folks are not exactly smiling. hundreds of frustrated residents say they faced an unprecedented

crime wave in this neighborhood. we have reported on carjackings, stolen cars in the last month. last night residents told police that the only reason three masked men didn't enter a home here is because someone was hope and triggered the alarm. >> they back into the driveway. they jumped the fence and it so happened that the son, the young man was there and he slicked the alarm system. zbli understand that people are angry. >> so here are the changes he announced last night. he said they will respond to all business and home alarms even if they are not verified which is new and that the department will launch a proactive burglary unit. also in october they will start a street climbs unit. it is for all of san jose.

conditions before you head out the door and make your drive out there. we have haze through the weekend but air quality remains moderate which is better than it being dangerous. towards next week looking ahead we can see that the temperatures remain in the upper 80s for the very first week of september. tri-valley i have an alert for you. the trivalley section we are talking about is south 680. we continue to follow top of the freeway. southbound 680 starts to jam up. folks out of pleasanton. joining with the merge there. you're jammed up there. the last couple of minutes seeing speed sensors improve a bit. two right lanes are blocked bay crash there. more folks heading in towards
