this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. welcome to "today" and thank you for making us part of your holiday. i'm sheinelle jones alongside peter alexander in for savannah and hoda this morning. >> so if this is the end of the summer, we are going outs in style today. check this out outside. this is insane. we rode into work at 4:30. the line went for blocks. why don't we, if you haven't heard of them? your kids will be upset if you didn't wake them up. >> one of the biggest crowds we've seen all summer long. we'll talk about that. let's get to what is on everybody else's minds this morning. the weather. there's trouble brewing for the south. a check of the first forecast, dylan. good morning to you. >> good morning. we're keeping a close eye on what is now tropical storm gordon. it is producing really heavy rain across southern florida. lots of cloud to ground lightning and this situation could lead to some spinup

tornadoes today and also gusty winds as the storm gets closer and closer. we already have tropical storm warnings in effect across parts of gulf coast as this storm moves through the gulf of mexico. so it includes the eastern, southern coast of louisiana also mississippi and alabama as well. and conditions will deteriorate, especially as we go into tuesday. the water temperatures right now are running around 90 degrees, so that's why this storm should maintain its strength. it's moving west, northwest at 17 miles per hour. winds are at 45 miles per hour and they will get stronger as we go through the next couple of days. tuesday morning it should have winds up to 60 miles per hour, maintaining that intensity on wednesday as it makes landfall somewhere near louisiana and mississippi. so, we are going to see this continue to be an impact especially for the gulf coast because of the significant rainfall we're going to see. we could see up to 3 to 5 inches of rain locally higher amounts up to 6 inches possibly, especially as we go into tuesday

and tuesday night. the storm surge could be 2 feet as this storm gets closer. this is something to keep an eye on for the next couple of days. peter? >> dylan, thank you very much. breaking overnight, the search for four people missing after a head-on collision between two boats. it happened on the colorado river saturday night sending nearly two dozen people into the water there. nbc's steve patterson has the very latest for us this morning. steve, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning to you. look, this is dangerous work. dive teams are heading back into the water this morning, searching an area at least two miles wide and in some places 30 feet deep. they are cautious at this point to call this operation a recovery. with family still holding out hope. >> reporter: this morning, a desperate search against the current. divers scouring colorado river for any signs of life after a disastrous head-on collision between two recreational boats saturday night filled with passengers. >> it's going to be a rollover tc.

two ejections. we have one immediate at this point. we're still determining the other. we have two patients. >> reporter: four people, a man and three women, are missing and presumed dead. >> i don't want to give the interpretation that there is a remote possibility that they made it to the shore, but, yeah, we are actively treating this as a potential drowning. >> reporter: helicopters above and rescue teams combing the river, you can see the tips of both vehicles barely above the surface. one of them pulled out of the water late on sunday. the boats carrying a combined 16 people crashed at about 8:00 p.m. near southern california's hoe has been by regional park about 120 miles south of las vegas. nine others were injured, two remain in critical condition. police say the water was crowded because of the holiday. >> it's hard to give an exact number of total number on the actual river itself. obviously because it is labor day weekend, holiday weekend, it's a big boating weekend on lake havasu. in the colorado river. >> reporter: a heart breaking

legalizes a woman's right to abortion and then the special counsel investigation, with a spotlight on kavanaugh's past writings, including a 1998 law journal article arguing congress should change the laws so presidents are protected from outside investigations. >> i think that's a mistake and it's one of the major reasons people have misgivings about his nomination. >> reporter: but republicans fired back. >> i'm sure judge kavanaugh will follow the guidelines and recuse himself in cases where he should. >> now, republicans have a narrow majority in the senate and can confirm kavanaugh without any democrats. still, the white house is watching two senators very closely, susan collins and lisa murkowski, both say they want a justice who respects abortion is legal. as for kavanaugh, white house official tells me he's ready for tomorrow having engaged in half a dozen prep sessions including full mock hearings which had protesters. >> kristen, thank you. also this morning, a man

being held for a deadly shooting that reignited the debate over florida's stand your ground law is opening up for the first time about the case. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us with that story. stephanie? >> good morning. michael was caught on surveillance video firing his gun after what he says was an argument over handicap parking space. he is speaking out from jail where he's facing manslaughter charges for shooting that left -- excuse me for shooting that left a father of three dead. >> reporter: it all started in a convenience store parking lot on july 19th. when michael says he argued with a woman over a handicap space. >> i did not confront anyone. i was confronted and i answered. >> reporter: in a jailhouse interview with a local reporter, he called people who park in handicap spots a pet peeve for him. because he has disabled friends and family. >> my whole life i've always been looking for handicapped parking spot.

>> reporter: at one point the woman's boyfriend steps between them and shoves him to the ground. he has a permit to carry a concealed weapon falls then pulls out his gun and fires. the unarmed boyfriend staggers back inside the store and later died. >> it was uncalled for murder. my son didn't deserve to die like this, period. >> the pinellas county sheriff did not arrest draca initially, saying he had the right to protect himself under florida's stand your ground law, but the county prosecutor later filed manslaughter charges against him. which draca called a surprise. >> i followed the law the way i thought the law was supposed to be followed. i cleared every hurdle. >> reporter: an attorney for the family disagrees. >> how did you clear every hurdle when he was the initial aggressor of the entire situation? >> reporter: draca says he was, quote, very scared after being pushed to the ground.

>> i didn't know it was a shove. i was tackled. it felt like i was tackled or someone hit me from behind with something. >> how was he afraid? he was the only one that had a gun. marquis was literally backing up. there was about four seconds that he had to make that decision whether to fire that firearm. >> reporter: asked if he had any message for the family, draca responded -- >> i'm sorry. that's all i can really say to them. >> so we're now hearing, of course, from draca, but has he entered a plea yet, steph? >> he pleaded not guilty. he'll be in court next month for a pretrial hearing while the family is asking the florida legislature to change this stand your ground law and change it and save lives. also this morning a dramatic twist now in the new sex abuse scandal rocking the catholic church. on sunday, a u.s. cardinal was confronted by pa rigser ins during mask as he asked for prayers for pope francis.

keir simmons has more on that. >> reporter: this morning, infighting at the highest levels of catholic church. two weeks ago, pope francis was accused without evidence of covering up for american cardinal mccarrick who resigned in july after allegations surfaced that he sexually abused minors and adult seminarians for decades. now the former ambassador to the u.s. archbishop who made those accusations against the pope is questioning the pontiff's honesty. a long standing critic of pope francis was the ambassador during the pope's high profile trip to the u.s. in 2015. during that visit, pope francis met with kim davis, the controversial county clerk from kentucky who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. according to "the new york times," a abuse survivor said pope francis told him he did not know who kim davis was prior to

their meeting and felt he was trying to sabotage his trip to the u.s., telling cruz, i was horrified and i fired that papal ambassador. over the weekend, he fired back saying the pope was lying, claiming he allegedly had briefed pope francis ahead of the meeting. others in the church questioning his motives. >> there's no question that archbishop is a disgruntled employee. now, most whistle blowers are disgruntled employees, so we have to investigate what he had to say and look into it. >> reporter: other catholic leaders are also taking heat for the abuse scandal rocking the church. washington, d.c.'s catholic archbishop heckled during a sunday mass. >> shame on you! >> reporter: he served as the bishop of pittsburgh for 18 years and was accused in an explosive grand jury report of mishandling clergy sexual misconduct, an accusation he denies.

people on board. it happened saturday night on the river that borders california and arizona. both boats sank. passing boaters pulled victims from the water. ten people were taken to the hospital. officials say none of the boaters were wearing life vests at the time of the accident. >> a massive fire engulfed brazil's 200-year-old museum in rio de janeiro sunday night lighting the sky with flames. they raced to save historical relics from the fire. the museum was closed at the time of the blaze. there are no reports of injuries. investigators are still trying to figure out exactly how it started. newly released video shows a wild high-speed chase in texas involving a mother and her baby. it happened back in june near san antonio. at one point you can see the suv run over a spike strip and almost lose control. later the suspect crashes into the back on a truck. she gets out, opens up the back door, and look at this, pulls a baby in a car seat out of the

suv and starts running. moments later they runs across several lanes of traffic and jumps into another suv. police say she was attempting to carjack the vehicle. she was surrounded by police and taken into custody. the woman had outstanding warrants and now faces a list of charges. to a powerful message from a grieving parent. college student mollie tibbetts allegedly murdered by an undocumented immigrant. his father breaking his silence saying he doesn't want his daughter's death to be used as a political pawn. more on that. >> peter, good morning to you. this family is shattered. they have been grieving in private but don't like how their daughter's name is being used. compelled once again to come forward to put a stop to it. this morning the father of slain iowa college student mollie tibbetts is demanding his daughter's murder be removed from the heated political debate
