i also noticed on my map a crash reported over here on 101 in san jose. i'll check on that, but we'll take you to the better news for the sunol approach. they have cleared their crews. the overnight closure looks like it's completely lifted now. the southbound side will have a closure right around andrade tonight at 11:00. keep that in mind, should reopen before 5:00 a.m. as this did on the northbound side. that should be completely clear in the next couple minutes. meanwhile, as you head to the bay bridge, it looks great. the bay bridge toll plaza, we have a couple lanes on the right approach there, cash lanes. not quite open yet. standard. back to you. >> thank you. new this morning, good news for all of us who spend hours and hours waiting to get our business done at the dmv. >> now there's another problem. we're finding out this morning, and this is a big one. kris sanchez is at the san jose dmv. tens of thousands of voter registrations may have been

mishandled? >> yeah, so just when the dmv is recovering from those long wait times and all of the drama there, now they're taking another hit. this one may impact your right to vote in the november election. now, california is still fuming about how long it's been taking to get a driver's license, a real i.d., really any kind of registration or business at the dmv, and now they're admitting they may have botched 23,000 voter registrations. the dmv sent incorrect information from people who are registering at the dmv automatically to the registrar of voters affecting voter choice related to political parties, languages they want their materials in, and vote by mail status. in more positive news, the average wait time did drop by an average of 20 minutes, but one california assemblyman said hold the applause. >> patting themselves on the pack from getting two thirds of their windows empty to half of

>> answer to a higher calling. you want to do something in service to the nation. you have to come forward and sign your name to this. >> we fully recognize what is happening, this insider writes, and we're trying to do what's right, even when donald trump won't. tracie potts, nbc news, washington. we are getting our first look at the cracked window at san francisco's leaning and sinking millennium tower. it's an update to a story we broke on tuesday. over the weekend, some residents in the millennium tower heard a popping noise. soon after, a homeowner on the tlishth floor discovered a crack in one of his windows. look at the size of it there. experts tell our investigative unit the cracked window is a result of the building leaning. it prompted the city to block off part of the sidewalk underneath the tower. city inspectors also gave the building's management just a certain amount of hours, what they could, to figure out the problem, inspect it, and see if

the people who live there were actually safe. well, a now report is being released today on the total amount of insurance claims filed following the carr and mendocino complex fires. both broke out in late july. the california department of insurance will make that announcement this morning in san francisco. meanwhile, a growing number of homeowners are getting an unwelcome notice in the mail from insurance companies. their fire insurance policy was not renewed. now, companies are claiming their property poses an unacceptable risk of wildfire. fred perkins lives in the oakland hills and he got a letter last month. he moved in more than a decade after a devastating 1991 oakland hills wildfire. >> i can't believe someone could make that decision without doing a thorough inspection of this area. >> now, the state insurance commissioner's office says that it is hearing from people state-wide who are facing the same cancellations. a former employee of the

city of cupertino is accused of embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars. jennifer chang was arrested this morning on 68 felony counts. she allegedly led a sophisticated and lengthy scam while serving as cupertino's financial department for 14 years. the sheriff's department says the fraud totaled nearly $800,000. >> it is 5:07. happening today, dublin's regal hacienda may be setting the stage for the future of 3d movie watching. if you have want seen the technology before, here's a look at screen x. you may be able to tell from the promo video the projection wraps 270 degrees around the audience. its makers call it the next step in immersive movie watching. the theater will debut "the nun" in the new format today. the first showing is at 10:30 in the morning. you should really check your

as a huge miss for google, which was already in washington's sights. the company was notably absent from a really fruitful hearing on protecting users from foreign influence. now, later, jack dorsey would walk down to a house hearing. this one was a bit more spirited. it focused on censorship. in the middle, a trump supporter stood up to object. you're going to hear her interrupt and then congressman billy long from missouri interrupts here. >> what did she say, i can't understand her? >> i think you can tell what billy long does on his off time. now, the person in the blue dress there, that's laura lumer, you may recall her as the woman banned for life from uber and lyft for complaining she couldn't get a driver who wasn't muslim. twitter took her blue check away as well. i want to show you one more

sound bite from the house hearing. this is twitter ceo jack dorsey if he could make his workforce more politically diverse, and her answer is interesting. >> we recognize we need to decentralizing our work force out of san francisco. not everyone wants to be in san francisco. not everyone wants to work in san francisco. not everyone can afford to even come close to living in san francisco. and it's not fair. >> something we're hearing a great deal about. companies moving out of san francisco because the talent can't afford to work here. also this idea that maybe san francisco values, which we value and are our values, are not necessarily the rest of the nation of the world, and if you're trying to sell the rest of the nation and world, maybe you have to have employees from somewhere else. >> very interesting. okay, but have to pay to live here, too. we have seen homes in the bay area considered fixer-uppers sold for over $1 million, but there's another home for sale in the east bay, called the burn

house. it's a definite tear-down with an asking price of $350,000. home located in the 1900 block of east 17th street in san antonio park area. the back of the home was gutted by fire three years ago. the agent who put the home on the market a week ago is calling the manufacturer of the home ready for demo and rebuild. >> your imagination, contractors could build more, do all kinds of stuff. >> i know we're a quiet neighborhood, but i don't think it should be that much considering all they have to do to fix it. >> so far, the real estate agent has taken in seven offers. i think for a lot in the bay area, that's a great deal. >> i was going to say. >> when you said that, i was like, where is it? >> i want to compare that to somewhere else in the country where you can get a mansion for $350,000. >> but you have a longer commute. >> that's right. >> coming from the traffic guy. >> have to watch out.

>> and we're paying for this nice weather. it's going to be another beautiful day across the bay area. here's a live look outside in san francisco where we have seen the fog each and every day. and it's still going to hang out today and still see those low clouds and mist and drizzle. you work your way inland toward the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station and it's going to be really nice as you step out the door. upper 50s. you may need a light jacket to start, and later on today, you'll take it off as temperatures get more comfortable. at noon, 72 degrees. we're starting out with that morning commute from morgan hill. temperatures a little cooler there to start. 54 degrees, and then we'll see the temperatures getting slightly warmer, so a wide range in temperatures throughout the day from morning to afternoon. as we head up to 87 degrees there. we go over towards the east bay with our high in pittsburgh reaching 88 degrees. then oakland at 70 degrees. and still some clouds through the morning hours. palo alto will get some clearing skies and temperatures reaching the upper 70s. we'll be up to 64 today in the

mission district, and some low 60s in the outer sunset. point reyes up to 64 degrees today while ukiah sees a high of 91. still hot there in santa rosa, much more comfortable with a high of 79. as you make weekend plans, maybe you're going to sonoma this weekend. it's going to be a little warm there on friday, saturday also sunny, and then we'll see the temperatures coming down just a few degrees by the end of the weekend, but that's the trend. our temperatures will spike for the valleys. hottest temperatures actually tomorrow, 94 degrees. and then still hot on saturday. 92. but then look at next week. by wednesday, we're only seeing the highs in the upper 70s, and san francisco pretty much remains steady. plus a little less clouds and fog tomorrow and saturday. mike, you're getting folks ready for the commute. >> there's that rule, white shoes after labor day rule, and also the no 90s after labor day? no. >> over here, a smooth flow of traffic, even though we have summer like temperatures coming

up, it's still fall traffic continuing to build around the bay. we're ready for that commute, but right now, we see the improvement up until the last few seconds. northbound 680 has cleared around the sheridan bridge. remember overnight f you leave before 5:00 a.m. tomorrow and travel south through the area, through sunol, you'll have that construction crew there as well. fridays, sometimes they pick up about a half hour early. we'll be here to track it you. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows the early signs of the commute building for west highway 4 and in towards 242, concord, pleasant hill, starting to see more traffic coming across from the benicia bridge. the bay bridge, we see a little slowing and should see the metering lights turn on in the next couple minutes. getting up there, 880 shows a nice easy drive. the tail lights, no problem. southbound with the tail lights, they head past the hayward area to the san mateo bridge. you'll see more traffic, but no problems getting westbound across this 580 from richmond to

emergency leaders sitting down with our investigative unit for the first time since last october's wildfires. >> they're answering questions about lessons learned and the changes they made in the last year. here's vicky nguyen. >> sonoma county leaderers admit county staff did not know how to fully use the emergency alert system last year. chris is the new interim emergency services manager. he said the county has now trained more than 30 dispatchers to use the wireless emergency alert. it's similar to an amber alert that can go out to all cell phones in a targeted region. >> if a fire like that or an emergency occurred in the county now, are they prepared to send an alert unlike ten months ago? >> absolute re. improving the capacity to respond, yes, we have maximized technology, we can more quickly understand the situation and

east bay with a live look outside in emeryville. all clear visibility and we have seen the low clouds near the coast, but you're looking good here. air quality remains an issue. drifts of smoke throughout the day. moderate air quality into the afternoon. and as you get up and get the kids ready for school around walnut creek today, our temperatures will start out in the upper 50s as you're walking to school, and a very nice afternoon with some upper 70s as that last school bell rings. we'll talk about what's going on for the weekend coming up. mike, what's going on this morning? taking us to the bay bridge. >> yes, our traditional check. that means it's good news. nothing bigger than the backup at the bay bridge. just about to the end of the parking lot. fast track filled in first. we're seeing slow traffic on the map getting into the area. the feeder routes looking great. no problems for the maze and the greater contra costa county commute. we have a build for highway 4. a good amount of traffic coming in. pittsburg, bay point, walnut

creek interchange, no problems. south bay, that little bit of 101 through san jose and a little slowing through livermore for highway 84. back to you. >> thanks, mike. california on alert. new overnight, a brush fire sparked up in the bay area. as another wildfire rages further north, closing an interstate. this is video from both sunol and shasta county. let's get you up to speed on both of these stories. >> we'll start with the fire that started while you were sleeping closer to home. today in the bay's bob redell live in sunol with the details. good morning, bob. >> good morning to you, marcus and laura. we're on sheridan road off 680 on sunol grade. this fire burned last night about two miles in that direction. you take a look at this video, give you a sense of the kind of response the fire department put out there. there were a number of trucks and at least one bulldozer. if you're not familiar with that specific area, it's remote. it's very hilly with lots of dry grass. the concern was this fire could spread. fortunately, the fire was slow

moving. there was not much wind last night. it started around midnight, 12:30 in the morning. burned through about seven acres. this was on the 7400 block of sheridan road. that fire is now fully out, no evacuations, no injuries. but it's a reminder even though the summer is over, the conditions here are still hot, still dry, and if you live in a wildland area, remember, the law requires you keep 100 feet of defensible space around your home and any structures. reporting in sunol, bob redell. >> that's not the only fire. a fire in shasta county as well causing a large stretch of i-5 to be shut down this morning. evacuations are under way as the delta fire rages out of control. you can see on this map, it is actually north of redding. here's what you need to know right now. the fire actually started yesterday afternoon, and in a very short time, it has grown to more than 5,000 acres. several tractor trailer trucks have gone as the fire swept over

the freeway. so far, no reports of injuries. a 45-mile stretch of interstate 5 is closed. now, i have to warn you, the video we're about to show you could be jarring. it's video of a woman reacting to the fire while she's sitting in trafrk on i-5. >> it's not moving. oh, my god. i want to go. ee have to get out and walk. we can't stay right here. look at that caught on fire. we cannot stay right here. we can't stay right here, babe. we got to walk. >> can you imagine how frightening? you feel like you have nowhere to go. so we found out the woman in the video was actually okay. she got away. she's been responding to people on her instagram page. u.s. forest service says the delta fire is human caused. this is the second wildfire burning in shasta county. >> fire:32 right now. new this morning, if you're driving through parts of the

haight district in san francisco, you notice construction in the area and don't like it, you have to get used to it. pete suratos is there live in haight. some business owners you talked to, some have pretty serious concerns about this. >> that's right. good morning to you, marcus. their concern stems from the fact these improvements to the haight district is going to take roughly two years. that's according to san francisco's public works department. this is one of the work zones where they're starting their work here at central and haight. we want to show our viewers the overall blueprint, i guess you can say, of this project which is titled the upper haight and transit improvement and pedestrian realm project. it's going to cost the city roughly about $12 million. the goal is to still keep the local flavor of the haight district that folks know all too well, but they want to expand the sidewalk for pedestrians, add neighborhood green to the area, more trees, more forestry

along the street, and also more lighting. they want to create this urban design when it comes to the haight district. but when it comes to the business owners, they're concerned because the streets will be effected. we showed you the work zone where there's limited parking in some areas. we talked to these business owners. here's hot they had to say about it. >> it's becoming a circus. and with the new construction that's coming, it's just going to hurt businesses again. and if it's going to go on for two years, i mean, who needs that? >> in the general retailer, it's already very slow. so by making it inconvenient for the people to even pass by, they will go online. >> of course, this is a big concern for the business owners. and i brought this up to public works and they responded theying they take this seriously and they're going to tell

contractors to limit the space when it comes to work zones. they should have only 100 to 125 feet per block, and once they're finished in that specific work zone because we're talking about a mile and a half span, they're going to break down the work zone and move on to the next one. let's take our viewers out live at central and haight where the construction started on monday. they'll start their sewer work in this area. that's the first phase of it, but the project, as i mentioned, will take about two years and wrap up at haight and stanley street. we're here in the haight district, pete suratos for today in the bay. >> thank you very much, pete. now to a developing story. after six months or months of allegations that she mishandled reports of sexual abuse, the embattled president of an all-girls catholic high school in san jose is stepping down. vicky nguyen first broke the story of reported abuse ten months ago. after 25 years at presentation high, mary miller announced her resignation yesterday. more than 7500 people signed a

petition calling for her to step down. since last november, the investigative unit spoke with ten victim s who accuse seven teachers. all said their reports to miller and other school leaders went nowhere. with miller now leaving, former victims say it's time for the school to start a new legacy. >> not words but deeds. it's the very motto of presentation that was being completely thrown in the gutter. by its own leadership. and the hypocrisy of it is horrific. >> after months of silence on the issue, the the san jose archdiocese released a statement with the bishop saying he commends the courageous women who have come forward and hopes the change in school leadership will put the school on a path to recovery. >> vicky nguyen and our investigative unit were first to break the sex abuse scandal at presentation high. to watch all of their previous reports, dpe to

nbcbayarea.com/weinvestigate. >> new for you this morning, an airline based in taiwan reportedly being accused of discriminating against a same-sex couple from the bay area. here's a look live now at sfo, and according to the chronicle, that's where a san francisco couple recently boarded an eva airline to tipie. now, jeff tells the chronicle the gate agent told the couple only he or his husband could preboard with their toddler. he soon realized straight couples with young children were preboarding together. eva has since apologized and said the gate agent was misinformed about policy. eva ordered its staff to review diversity training. >> happening tonight, nike doubling down on the colin kaepernick controversy with an advertisement in tonight's nfl opener. >> believe in something. even if it means sacrificing everything. >> that's a moment viewers may first realize colin kaepernick

be in the low 80s throughout the middle of the day. and then we can wrap up the weekend in oakland on sunday for the pride festival and parade that kicks off at 10:30 in the morning, and it's going to be nice and cool there. 62 degrees during the parade. and then as the day goes along, we'll make it into the low 70s with sunshine there. going up to lake shasta, heads up that there will still be smog drifting by, and temperatures will be pretty warm, reaching 94 degrees on friday and then some low 90s for the rest of the weekend. poor air quality still remains an issue. then really hot temperatures again reaching over 100 degrees for friday and saturday. by sunday, 98 degrees. that's not much better. well, we'll have nice cool weather in santa cruz this weekend, with some highs in the mid 70s. great beach weather. and we won't see as much in the way of clouds and fog. we will start the day with some low clouds. but it should clear up fairly quickly. if you're not doing so already, follow me on facebook, twitter,

league is asking the city to clean up the field. the league says that homeless there have taken over that area. the league says it lost 50% of its players over the past two years. the city staff says they're meeting with the league as well as the parks department to work on solutions. you might notice another security machine when you fly. new state of the art security measures being tested at bay area airport this morning. tsa will showcase a computerized ct scanner at oakland international. it will screen passengers' carry-on luggage and check for explosives. oakland international is one of 15 airports where the testing is being done. >> well, supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh faces a second day of grilling by senators today on capitol hill. one of the questions judge kavanaugh declined to give a clear answer to was whether he would take himself off any case that might involve a lawsuit or criminal case involving president trump. >> it is safe to say that the kavanaugh hearings are not top

of the president's mind. >> "the new york times" op-ed caused pandemonium in the white house. >> it's really hard to overstate how big this is. i have seen some in the media calling this critical of the president or saying the op-ed skewered the president. it's way bigger than that. the article written by an unnamed senior official to the president says his own cabinet has talked about invoking the 25th amendment to remove the president as unfit. and that his senior staff, his most trusted officials, are working at times to do the direct opposite of what the president orders. i could read your selections but it's so shocking i don't know where we would stop or start. it's easiest to find it in the internet. i urge you to read it in its entirety. the writer whose name is gone to "the new york times" but not to us says the white house staff works not as a deep state but as a steady state, keeping america out of disaster. after trump read the op-ed, he

tweeted out a single word -- treason. and you could make a solid argument it is. the people deliberately ignoring the president's orders might feel they're saving the republic, but they're also upending rule of law and the chain of command. here's president trump reacting in front of tv cameras. >> so if the failing "new york times" has an anonymous editorial, can you believe it, anonymous, meaning gutless. a gutless editorial, we're doing a great job. the poll numbers are through the roof. our poll numbers are great. and guess what. nobody is going to come close to beating me in 2020, because of what we have done. >> i mentioned the 25th amendment. the author talked about whispers of the 25th. that's the part of the constitution that allows the cabinet there to vote that the president is mentally or physically unfit to be president. all that sets a motion in process to temporarily replace him. it's never been used, and the author said the idea was rejected because it would cause a constitutional crisis.

72 degrees. can then 84 degrees at 3:00 today. seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. we're looking at our highs today across all ofory microclimates with our highs in san francisco reaching 64 degrees. 70 in oakland, and 89 in concord. napa today, 83 degrees. as you're getting dressed this morning, you may be comfortable wearing light long sleeves and jeans today. but then pull up the sleeves later on today. we're looking at a very active pacific. i wanted to give you a quick update. we have two category-3 hurricanes out over the open pacific right now. olivia and then we also have norman. norman is closer to hawaii. we have been keeping an eye on that while olivia is going to stay out over the open water. his is good news for hawaii. it's not going to make a direct hit. actually stays just to the east of the island. but may turn up some waves over the next few days as we go into the weekend, and that storm weakens. here's a look at our spike in temperatures. here's that hot weather i was talking about.

we'll see those highs in the upper 80s today. and then 94 degrees tomorrow. and still it's going to be hot on saturday. 92 degrees. so factor that into your weekend plans. san francisco will get a little more sunshine. it's going to be really nice there. and also along the coast. mike, you are tracking a hit-and-run crash? >> we got word from chp. now major injuries, that's good news. and not a lot of slowing. as i back out of here, we look at highway 4. that's what stands out the most. pretty typical of the area coming in toward concord. pleasant hill, just fine for decision 80 and 242. this crash, south 101 around silver, shows a little slowing on our sensors. reports of a hit-and-run crash means the person who did the hitting took off and the person who was hit is now blocking the fast lane. crews are arriving and that's heading out of san francisco, northbound 101, just fine getting into the city and toward the bay bridge. a smooth drive around the rest
