thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at traffic in a moment. first, we want to see what it feels like outside. kari hall is tracking all that for us. >> cool morning and clouds near the coast. we'll see all that clearing out as we go through the day. a little warmer than it was yesterday. here's a look at your view from emeryville this morning. already busy. at least we have clear visibility, but still hazy today with the haair quality alerts continuing with drifts of smoke and moderate air quality all across the bay area. if you're on your way to the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station, we start out nice and cool, mid 50s, and head to 72 degrees in your lunch bram. we'll get a look at our microclimates coming up and mike has a look at the morning commute. looking good so far? >> it is. you showed the clear view of the drive through the berkeley curve and the maze. there's a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. just got word of a stall reported southbound 680 out of sunol into pleasanton.

sounds like everything is off to the center divide, which is oftentimes more of a distraction than the side. hayward shows a build for 880, down into san jose. no problems here. into san martinez, morgan hill, northbound 101 shows a pretty focused backup and more severe than the last week. so we do have that building coming out of gilroy for the south county. from the south bay to the north bay, southbound 101 shows san rafael building in volume. back to you. >> thank you, nike. at 6:01, new this morning, good news for all of us who spend hours and hours waiting to get business done at the dmv. >> that is good, but now there's another problem and we're finding out about that this morning. it's a big one. >> kris sanchez at the san jose dmv. tens of thousands of voter registrations may have been mishandled? >> yeah, the california dmv may have a lot of folks going now what? now that they're revealing they botched the voter registrations

of a lot of folks who have come in and waited in line and expected they would be automatically registered. as of april, californians could automatically register to vote while they were already at the dmv for other business, and just last night, the dmv revealed it sent incorrect information to the registrar of voters, affecting 23,000 voter registrations. specifically voter choice related to political party, language that they want the material in, and vote by mail status. that news overshadows a decrease in the dmv wait times. people now waiting 21 minutes less on average, but one california assemblyman said hold the applause. >> patting themselves on the back from getting two thirds of their windows empty to half of their windows with individuals there to help out. >> all right, so as the dmv struggles with that, you're going to want to check your voter registration because if

striking down a law that made homosexuality a crime. india's law dated back to 1861 when india was part of the british empire. it allowed someone to be sentenced up to ten years in prison for same-sex relations. five people challenged the law saying they feared harassment and police prosecution. >> a new report is being released today on the total amount of insurance claims filed following the carr and mendocino complex wildfires. both broke out in late july. the california department of insurance will make the announcement this morning in san francisco. meanwhile, a growing number of homeowners are getting an unwelcome notice in the mail from insurance companies. their fire insurance policy is not being renewed. those companies are claiming that their property poses an unacceptable risk of wildfires. fred perkins right there lives in the oakland hills. he got a letter last month. he moved in more than a decade after the devastating 1991 oakland hills fire. >> i can't believe someone can make that decision without doing

a thorough inspection of this area. >> now, the state insurance commissioner's office says it is hearing from people state-wide who are facing the same cancellation. >> at 6:04, we're getting our first look at the cracked window at san francisco's leaning and sinking millennium tower. at least a new angle of it. an update to a story we first broke on tuesday. over the weekend, some residents in the tower heard a popping sound and soon after, a homeowner on the 36th floor discovered a crack in one of his windows. look at the size of it there. experts tell our investigative unit the cracked window is a result of the building leaning. the crack prompted the city to block off part of the sidewalk underneath the tower. they also gave the building management 72 hours to inspect the problem and figure out if the people who live there are safe. >> 6:05. on the heels of a new book detailing dysfunction inside the white house comes another blow. an insider telling "the new york times" there's a resistance inside the administration

working against president trump. today in the bay's tracie potts has more including the president's response. good morning, tracie. >> good morning. the president says whoever this is needs to come forward. "the new york times" needs to give up the name. it's a matter of national security. but this morning, we don't know who it is. we know who it's not. denials coming in from the vice president and the secretary of state, both saying they didn't write it. "the new york times" headline reads, i am part of the resistance inside the trump administration. and an anonymous op-ed from someone the paper described as a senior administration official. >> anonymous. meaning gutless. a gutless editorial. we're doing a great job. the poll numbers are through the roof. >> from the inside, this official calls president trump amoral, making half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions. confirming early talk among aides of invoking the 25th

amendment to remove him from office. as they work to frustrate the president's agenda. >> people around this president have been sounding the alarm, almost like a paul revere moment, coming out and saying such dramatic things. >> president trump calls it treason. the white house is demanding the author resign. >> on answer to a higher calling. you want to do something in service to the nation. you to come forward and sign your name to this. >> we fully recognize what is happening, this insider writes, and we're trying do what's right, even when donald trump won't. now, the president tweets that this is reaction to him doing what he said he was going to do in washington, draining the swamp of what he answers bad apples and that the swamp is now fighting back. the biggest question in washington this morning, who wrote that editorial. >> sure a question many people will be asking throughout the day and the week. >> yeah, really scanning and analyzing.

tracie potts, thanks so much. >> 6:07. happening today, dublin's regal hacienda may be setting the stage for the future of 3d movie watching. if you haven't seen this technology before, take a look at your screen. it is called screen x. you may be able to tell from the promo video, the projection wraps 270 degrees around the audience. its makers call it the next step in immersive movie watching. regal's hacienda is the first bay area theater to feature it. the theater will debut "the nun" in the new format. the first showing is at 10:30 in the morning. >> seeing "the nun" and you're like -- all around me. i don't know. all right, so here's a live look outside at san jose this morning. it starts out all clear. nice cool temperatures. time to get the kids up and start getting ready for school. our school day forecast, mostly cloudy. temperatures in the upper 50s,

low 60s, and then at noon, it's going to feel really nice. by the time you go back to pick them up from school, mid 70s. then eventually heading up to 82 degrees today. antioch, 90 degrees. 89 in concord today. it will be hotter than it was yesterday in some spots. we're keeping it comfortable in oakland with a high of 70, and 79 today in santa rosa. we'll talk about what's going on for the south bay. i'll break that down coming up in a few minutes. and mike gets you out the door with a look at the commute. >> we had a traffic break. i watched it happen. i watched it clear, southbound 880 now back with all the head lights streaming northbound. you see activity, flashing lights. they may be over there to lend a hand with whatever is going on around the nimitz auto park freeway. between auto mall and the truck scales. on the map, the southbound side had a quick traffic break. never saw a real problem. you see that yellow blip right there, that's probably what caused it. a smooth drive now, both 680 and

880 toward the fremont funnel, where folks funnel across in towards mission bufltd and auto mall parkway. that stall not a problem anymore, getting out of pleasanton. a new fender bender reported, 880 right around 87 and the overpass there. we'll check on that once chp arrives and let you know if any lanes are blocked. does not sound like they are. no problem getting to bay bridge. 17 minutes, top number right here. that's from highway 4 to the backup at the bay bridge because the metering lights are on. a live look at san rafael, the build no problem all the way across the golden gate bridge. >> coming up next on today in the bay, how much would you spend for this oakland fixer-upper? take a good look at it. yeah, what it would cost you before you're even able to start on those renovations. the cost of living in the bay area are driving some people out. the twitter ceo talks all about it coming up in business and tech. >> at 6:25, the new alert system, way sonoma county is preparing in case another fire

microclimates and a hotter weekend ahead. that's coming up in less than five minutes. and no problems. south 880 from san leandro down towards fremont, a little slowing. and a little slowing for the north bay. that's traditional for highway 37. >> good morning, everyone. glad you're with us on this thursday morning. two controversial companies saw their shares on the move. tesla, which is once again dealing with musk's bizarre behavior, hit a new three-month low. nike, you'll notice, recovered a bit, but just a bit, from its loss on tuesday. we gave you full coverage of the senate social media hearing on wednesday, as twitter and facebook met with the senate intelligence committee. it was a very fruitful meeting with lots of good ideas flowing from both sides. intelligent talk in the intelligence committee. google was also invited to that hearing but declined to send an

executive. the company offered its lawyer, but the senate said no. a lot of people are seeing this as a huge miss for google, which was already in washington's sights. the company was notably absent from a really fruitful hearing on protecting users from foreign influence. now, later, jack dorsey would walk down the hall in the capitol to a house hearing. this one was a bit more spirited. it focused on censorship. in the middle of it, a trump supporter stood up to object. now, you're going to hear her interrupt, and then you're going to hear congressman billy long from missouri who interrupts her. >> what is she saying? i can't understand her. >> that is why -- >> 15, 20, 7 1/2, 30 down, 2 1/2, 40. >> i think you can guess what billy long's regular job is. the person there yelling is laura loomer. you may recall her as the woman who was banned for life from uber and lyft for complaining she couldn't get a driver who

wasn't muslim. twitter took her blue check away as well. >> i want to show you one more sound bite from that hearing. this is twitter ceo jack dorsey after he was asked if he could make this workforce more politically diverse. his answer is really interesting. >> we recognize that we need to decentralizing our workforce out of san francisco. not everyone wants to be in san francisco. not everyone wants to work in san francisco. not everyone can afford to even come close to living in san francisco. and it's not fair. >> obviously, i interview ceos all the time. the reason san francisco draws in business is this is where the talent is. you cannot find talent better than you find it here. if the talent moves, and that's easy for talent to move away, then they have to go chasing them. >> exactly, and a lot of talent is moving away. >> yes, it is. >> tough to see. you know why? because the bay area's home prices are expensive.

have you ever considered buying a fixer-upper? there's one up for sale in the east bay. quite the fixer-upper, though. this is called the burn house. it's a definite tear down. it has an asking price of $350,000. located in the 1900 block of east 70 street in the san antonio park neighborhood. the front of the home looked untouched but the back was gutted by fire three years ago. the agent who put the home on the market a week ago is calling the manufactured home ready for demo and rebuild. >> imagination of the contractors. they can build more, do all kinds of stuff. >> i know we're a quiet neighborhood, but it shouldn't be that much considering all they have to do to fix it. >> trying to see where the front is untouched because it kind of looks like it needs a touch. so far, the real estate agent has taken in seven offers. happening today, how sweet is this? a pop-up museum bringing candy

the sky, the drizzle we normally see this time of year. low clouds and fog again to start in inland areas. going to have a nice clear day. here's a look at the view as you can barely see the top of the pyramid there. we'll have clearing throughout the day and staying breezy. let's head out the door and get the kids ready for school this morning in the tri-valley. it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy. temperatures in the upper 50s as you walk to school or go through that drop-off line. and it's going to be a cool start but a very nice afternoon, as our temperatures head into the upper 70s by 1:00 today. check out the seven-day forecast. it's already up at the bottom of the screen, as we get a look at our highs in the south bay, and milpitas, expect a high of 83. for the east bay, warmer than yesterday, reaching up to 88 in livermore and 79 in martinez. oakland today, up to 70 degrees. and 59 in daly city, while palo alto reaches 77 degrees.

it will be up to 60 today in the outer sunset and the mission district reaching 64 degrees. mill valley, 77. and 91 in ukiah. napa today, expect a high of 83 degrees. still a wide range in temperatures as you make your weekend plans. if you're going to sonoma, it's still going to be warm, but a nice weekend ahead with slightly cooler temperatures on sunday with sunshine. heads-up there may still be some moderate air quality. let me know what you're doing this weekend, i' i'm @karihallweather on twitter and instagram. it's going to be hotter heading into tomorrow for the valleys reaching 94 degrees, and still hot saturday with a high of 92. by sunday, we're up to 88, and then look at the cooldown. by next wednesday, only 79 degrees. yeah, that's for the valley. san francisco keeping more of a steady temperature, but you'll see less clouds and fog tomorrow and saturday. mike, now you have a new crash in san francisco.

>> we do. it's blocking a couple lanes in the latest update chp gives us. we'll give you a big view of the bay. roef overall, no real problems. moving smoothly except southbound 101, out of san francisco, through san francisco and the bay bridge, slower in the last five minutes. a report that the two right lanes are blocked. sounds like there may be activity. they may move it to the shoulder or the center divide. off the bridge, if you're heading down the peninsula on southbound 101. now, once you pass that 280 interchange, you're fine. and getting over from the east bay so far, the bridge is moving nicely. we just have the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. highway 4, a slow drive, as you would expect through pittsburg, out of bay point, and easing up into concord, where the walnut creek interchange moves smoothly for 680 and 24. a live look shows you what things are like for 580, building volume, continuing at speed right here as you pass by

our )investigative welcome back. it's 6:24. sonoma acounty emergency leaders sitting down with our investigative unit for the first time since last october's wildfires. >> they're swging questions about lessons learned and the changes they made since last year. here's vicky nguyen. >> sonoma county leaders admit county staff did not know how to fully use the emergency alert system last year. chris is the new interim emergency services manager. he says the county has now trained more than 30 dispatchers to use the wireless emergency alert. it's similar to an amber alert that can go out to all cell phones in a targeted region. if a fire like that or an emergency occurs in the county now, is the county prepared to send an alert on what happened ten months ago? >> absolutely. as part of both efforts, both improving the county's capacity to respond and deliver alert

good morning and thanks for joining us. i )m laura garcia. a very good thursday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. let's head over to kari hall tracking our forecast for us. a cool start but we're going to see a heat-up later? >> it's going to start to heat up with temperatures spiking tomorrow. we start out with clouds this morning from the marine layer bringing us a nice cool morning. then we'll see it clearing out as we head over to evergreen. by 8:00, we'll start to see the

sun peeking out. after that, temperatures heating up. we'll be in the upper 70s and still really comfortable with our high reaching 82 in san jose. palo alto up to 77. 90 in antioch. napa today reaching 83 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike now has an update on the crash in san francisco. >> you know, reports came in, the details said in san francisco. i guess we should look at this shot. the bay bridge drive in, there might have been obscured because of a crash involving a car that could not be moved but they're moving it. south 1v01 at cesar chavez, a quick traffic break, they should have it cleared by the time you get across to the oakland side. we'll talk about the south bay coming up. >> thank you, mike. 6:30. new overnight, a new brush fire sparked up as another wildfire rages further north, closing an interstate. this is video from sunol grade and shasta county.

let's get you up to speed on both of these stories. >> we want to start with the fire that started while you were sleeping. bob redell live with details in sunol this morning. >> good morning to you. that fire is about two miles east from where i'm standing in unincorporated sunol off sheridan road, off 680. you take a look at this video from overnight from around 12:30 this morning when the fire started. it gives you a pretty good idea of the kind of response the fire department had. a number of trucks, at least one bulldozer. it is remote, very hilly with lots of dry grass. the concern was the fire could spread. unfortunately, not much wind last night. it was very slow moving. as i mentioned, it started around midnight, 12:30, burned through aboutsophy acres. this is on land on the 7400 block of sheridan road. that fire is fully contained. it is out. there were no evacuations. no injuries. but this is a reminder that even though the summer is over, the

conditions are still very dry and during the day we have been seeing these hot temps. if you do live in a wildland area, remember, the law requires that you maintain 100 feet of defensible space around your home and any structures on your property. reporting live here in sunol, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, bob. in the meantime, an explosive fire in shasta county causing a large stretch of i-5 to be shut down this morning. evacuations are under way as the delta fire rages out of control. as you can see on this map, this is happening just north of redding. here's what we know right now. the fire started yesterday afternoon. and in jest a short time, it has grown to more than 5,000 acres. several tractor trailer trucks are gone as the fire actually swept over the freeway. so far, no reports of injuries. a 45-mile stretch of interstate 5 is closed north of redding. now, we have video to show you here. it could be jarring. video of a woman reacting to the

fire while she was sitting in traffic on i-5. >> it's not moving. oh, my god. i want to go. brandon, we got to get out and walk. we can't stay right here. look at that car just caught on fire. we cannot stay right here. we can't stay right here, babe. we got to walk. >> you can imagine how frightening that must have been with nowhere to go and the fire approaching. we do know the woman on the video is okay. she's been responding to people on her instagram page. u.s. forest service says the delta fire is human caused. it's the second wildfire burning in shasta county. >> 6:33. new this morning, if you're driving through parts of haight district in san francisco and notice construction in the area, you're going to have to get used to it. pete suratos is live there in the haight. and pete, some business owners you spoke with actually have pretty serious concerns about all of this.

>> yeah, good morning to you, marcus. big-time concerns for these business owners because these improvements are going to take roughly two years. in fact, we're standing on central and haight. you can see one of the work zones behind me. they'll start at roughly 7:00 a.m. this is a two-year project we're talking about. let's show you the designs, where this is going to stretch from. a team called the upper haight transit improvement project, it's going to cost about $12 million for the city. some of the main things are going to include an expanded sidewalk for pedestrians, neighborhood greening in the area, as well as more lighting. they're trying to set up more of an urban design when it comes to the haight district. one of the issues as we showed you the work zone is the parking in the area. streets will be affected while they're tearing out the construction. big problem for business owners. here's what they told me not too long ago. >> it's becoming a circus. and with the new construction that's coming, it's just going to hurt business again.

and if it's going to go on for two years, i mean, who needs that? >> in the general, retail is already very slow. so by making it inconvenient for the people to park or even to pass by, they just go online. >> now, i did reach out to public works and they say they're taking those concerns seriously and telling contractors to limit the space for work zones to make it only 100 to 125 feet per block. and once they're finished with the work zone, they want them to break it down and move on to the next area. let's take you back out here live. this is one of the work zones on central and haight. they started this work on monday, so just a few days ago. part of the 1st phase. the project will them wrap up at haight and stanley street. pete suratos for today in the bay. >> thank you, pete. it is 6:35.

now to a developing story. after months of allegations that she mishandled reports of sexual abuse, the embattled president of an all-girls catholic high school in san jose is stepping down. vicky nguyen first broke the story of reported abuse ten months ago. after 25 years at presentation high, mary miller announced her resignation yesterday. more than 7500 people called, signed a petition calling for her to step down. since last november, the investigative unit spoke with ten victims who accused seven teachers, all said the reports to miller and other school leaders went nowhere. with miller now leaving, former students and supporter of sex abuse victims say it is time for the school to start a new legacy. >> not words but deeds. it's the very motto of presentation that was being completely thrown in the gutter by some in leadership. and the hypocrisy of it is

horrific. >> after months of silence on the issue, the san jose archdiocese released a statement with bishop patrick mcgraw saying he commends the courageous women who have come forward and hopes the change in school leadership will put the school on the path to recovery. >> new this morning, an airline based in taiwan is reportedly being accused of discriminating against a same-sex couple from the bay area. here's a live look at sfo. according to the chronicle, that's where the san francisco couple recently boarded an eva airline to taipei. he tells the chronicle the gate operator there told the couple only he or his husband could preboard with their toddler. he ended up waiting until normal boarding. he soon realized straight couples with young children were preboarding together. eva has since apologized saying the gate agent was misinformed about the policy. after learning about the incident, eva ordered its staff to review diversity training.

all right, let's take a look at your commute right now. san jose, take a look. north 880 in recovery mode as you're traveling north. first one crash, and then a second crash. that cleared as well. been a busy ten minutes over here. but overall, the south bay moves nicely. we just see northbound push through the rest of san jose. typical for silicon valley. the patterns are pretty standard. a live look showed you the maze. that moves nicely, very nicely. once you get out of this shot at the bay bridge toll plaza, of course we have a backup because a lot of folks are trying to get over there. >> there we go. trying to get to the weekend as well. >> very close. >> it's almost here for a lot of people. and it may have snuck up on you so fast, you were like, oh, i don't know what to do this weekend. so let me help you out here. a little hotter on saturday for the inland valleys. some low 90s. the bay, very nice. 80 degrees and more comfortable weather, comfortably cool weather for the coast. 70 degrees.

for many of our coastal areas, and then temperatures come down a few degrees throughout the weekend with the inland valleys reaching up to 88 degrees. here's one thing you might want to check out, the art and wine festival in mountain view both saturday and sunday. i'm featuring saturday's forecast because it will be a little warmer. lots of sunshine throughout the day. and we'll head up to about 83 degrees at 3:00. and that will be the top of our temperatures, and very nice. on sunday in oakland, pride festival. parade kicks off at 10:30 in the morning and it's going to be cool out there. 62 degrees. then at the festativities continue throughout the day, heading up to about 71 degrees. perfect weather, but if you're going up to lake shasta, heads up that there will be drifts of smoke. a new wildfire burning up there. you might want to call ahead and get details on that. our temperatures around that area reaching into the low to mid 90s, and really hot in poso robles this weekend, over 100 degrees for tomorrow and saturday.

overstate how big this is. we have seen some in the media call this a critical op-ed of the president or saying it skewers the president. it's far bigger than that. the article written by an unnamed senior official to the president says his own cabinet has talked about invoking the 25th amendment to remove the president as unfit. and that his senior staff, his most trusted officials, are working at times to do the direct opposite of what the president orders. i could read you the selections from it, but the whole thing is so shocking, i don't know where you would stop or start. it's probably the easiest thing to find on the internet right now. i urge you to read it inin entirety. the writer whose name is known to "the new york times" but not to us says the white house staff works not as a deep state but as a steady state, keeping america out of disaster. after trump read the op-ed, he tweeted out a single word -- treason. now, while the legal definition of treason is helping a

country's enemy, the president does have a point. people deliberately ignoring the president's orders might feel they're saving the republic, but they're also upending the rule of law and chain of command. here's president trump reacting in front of tov cameras. >> if the failing "new york times" has an anonymous editori editorial, can you believe it, anonymous? meaning gutless, a gutless editorial, we're doing a great job. the poll numbers are through the roof. our poll numbers are great, and guess what, nobody is going to come close to beating me in 2020 because of what we have done. >> i mentioned the 25th amendment. the author talked about whispers of the 25ths. that's the part of the constitution that lets the cabinet there vote that the president is metropolitanally or physically unfit to be the president. and that sets in motion a process to temporarily replace him. it's never been used by the cabinet and the author said the idea was rejected because it would cause a constitutional crisis. >> as for who wrote the memo,

upper 50s to the upper 70s by 1:00 today. that's going to be really nice. get out there and enjoy it. walk to school this morning as you make your way out the door in san jose. about 60 degrees. a light jacket needed for that morning walk or even just going through the drop off line. and then as the kids head out for recess, it will start to clear up and feel a little more comfortable. low 70s by noon and 75 for the early afternoon as we head up to 82 degrees. we'll see the temperatures spike up to 90 in antioch today. a little hotter than yesterday. oakland reaching 70 degrees. 79 in santa rosa, and up to 64 today in san francisco. so as you look out the window, you see the clouds now, and it is a cool start. you may be comfortable wearing long sleeves and jeans for today, but roll them up later on today. here's an update on the tropics. we have two category-3 hurricanes. it's pretty active out there. and olivia is still continuing on with wind speeds of 120 miles per hour. that's going to stay out over

the open water. we have been keeping an eye on norman because it's a little closer to hawaii and still expected to make that northerly turn, but it may kick up high waves especially with this being a category-3, and hawaii does stay on the good side of the storm, meaning they won't get any of the outer rain bands moving through. we're looking at a spike in temperatures across the bay area with sunshine. look at that, 94 degrees tomorrow. but then look at wednesday. we're up to 79. so still some pretty wild temperature swings, but it will feel more like fall early next week. mike, now you're tracking a new crash. >> it doesn't look like a big deal. so we'll make it a quick report because the south bay, peninsula, they're moving nicely. predictable patterns for the tri-valley, and in the east bay. my concern was southbound 880, your commute direction out of san leandro, a crash has been there for a few minutes. there's no update from chp, but i think it's out of lanes because the slowing doesn't start until you get past the san mateo bridge. that's a standard pattern.
