we want to start. >> as many penalties as we saw. >> we just started with a penalty on myself. 5-0 with the 49ers last season. when he came up they gave him a simple plan, only played five games, and they didn't make it too complex. now we spend a whole offseason with him. does he have a full grasp yetan? >> i think he does. they were working game plan to game plaasyear, and it wasn't until the offseason program where he saw the whole playbook and says oh, now i see why it makes sense. he has a really good grasp of this offense, and now it's enabled him to free up his whole workweek. so this week i think he probably spent a lot more time working on the minnesota vikings defense than he did preparing for any other defense that he faced during those five games last season. >> he was perfect, but last year

nobody had a book on him. now there's tape on him. could he be less effective, because people know what to expect? >> there's a lot of tape on him now. but that's any player. it's going to be on the coaching staff to go in and help whateve they have counters off of what they run. it will be up to the coaching staff to help him when teams try to attack their grievances. >> bad news for the 49ers, mckinnon tore his acl. they signed alfred morris before the second preseason game. will it be a morris matt breeda, how do they fill the role with mckinnon? >> this was a crushing blow, he was going to revamp that offense around jared mckinnon.

now it's going to have to be a game by game basis. he's going to have to ride the hot hand. whether it is alfred morris running between the tackles or breeda doing the outside zone plays. unpolished receiver out of the backfield. it's not the perfect scenario for kyle shanahan, but they do have some other weapons that they can use, but i think you're going to see a lot of both of those guys, morris and breeda. >> you're a big fanrris >> i'm a big fan of alfred morris. look at his yards per carry, 4.8. they were higher than ezekiel elliotts last year. he didn't have the carries to equal up to the 14 or 1500 yards. i believe they will ride him. i believe three will u-- they will use 22 to come in.

post game sports game. you got a first year defensive coordinator, and he'd never coached mack and now has to replace mack. how does he do it? >> he's not going to do it with just one guy. nobody can replace an edge rusher like kahlil mack. it's very rare to have his combination of skill and power. they're going to use a lot of different guys, carradine up front. and then off thedg irvin. everybody knows what he can do. keep your eye on a rookie, ard key. i think he can make an instant impact as a rookie. >> he was defensive player of the year a couple years ago, the locker room all loved him. he's gone, because he wanted more money, and they wouldn't pay it. what does that do to a locker

through a lot the last couple seasons. >> he has. last year he stepped back and went back to his rookie year to where his touchdown/intercepti ratio was the far worst of his career. he'll take a lot of deep shots and hopefully he can get his career back to where he needs to be in. if he performs at an elite level he can take this team to an afc championship game. >> when he's good, scott, he can be as good as anybody. the issue has been injuries and inconsistent play. >> and really, last year this team and that coaching staff from last year just got off the rail t rails early and never got back on. it's not reflective of his tal the lev talent level. i think that this group is going to work. their wide receiver core has gone through some upheaval

are threatened. this is new video of some of the wreckage and the flames. >> here's a closer look at where the fire is burning, near the town of lakehead. a nearly 50-mile stretch of i-5 is still closed because of the fire and it's not going to be reopening until at least the earliest, >> jodi hernandez is live in shasta county with the latest. what do you see? >> reporter: this fire is really something else. we're standing right off interstate 5, and you can see the flames rate oight off the hy behind us. you can't hear it, but you can hear the roar of the flames. it sounds much like the crashing waves of the ocean, and it's not letting up. just a little more than 24 hours after it started, the delta fire's not backing down. this is the scene off

interstate a north interstate 5, north of redding. flames threatening the highway r >> it was one of the top fires of my career. that chaotic. >> reporter: they describe what it looked like when it broke out yesterday afternoon. truck drivers abandoned their big rigs to escape the flames. >> it was chaos. vehicles in the road, semi trucks parked, some burning. kind of chaos. people trying to get out of the way of this very fast-moving fire. >> reporter: so far, the delta fire has destroyed at least one home, including stan place in the community of pull ard flats. the decorated vet nearly made it out with nothing more than his military record and his dog. >> when you have like a 90-car freight train coming at you sideways and flame, 200, 300 feet high, you don't really think.

you just are back here live, looking at those flames burning. the fire is burning tonight on both sides of interstate 5. and, again, shows no signs of letting up. this is why the interstate remains closed tonight. a firefighter says they don't want to see a repeat of the chaos that happened out here yesterday afternoon. they refuse to put people back in harm's way. so the highway will remain closed until it is safe. right now, the fire is 0% contained. reporting live in shasta county, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. >> we'll check back in with you tomorrow. that is a big deal for i-5 to remain closed. it's burning so rapidly, it's showing up on satellite. it can be seen here about halfway between redding and eureka. u it hidieading east-northeast.
