this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." thank you for being with us friday morning. we're all thinking about burt reynolds. he was just here six months ago. i think you must have had one of the last interviews with him. >> it was a real privilege to sit down with him. he was very open. he talked about of all the wonderful women in his life, he put his finger on the one woman he loved the most. we'll talk about his life and legacy coming up in a bit. >> and his loves. we'll look back with a lot of fondness. we have a lot to get to in the news. we'll start with the surprising new rallying cry from president trump as we head into the midterm elections and his new attack on the anonymous administration official working for him but against him on the inside. nbc national correspondent peter alexander is at the white house with all of it. peter, good morning. >> hey, savannah, good morning to you. over these last 24 hours, we've seen a remarkable parade of top

trump officials one by one saying it wasn't me. the white house still hunting for the anonymous administration official who wrote that scathing op-ed. the "new york times" writing senator rand paul recommended he forced members of the administration to take a lie detector tests, and "the times" says advisers here briefly discussed. another option asking senior officials to sign sworn affidavits with one outside adviser telling the paper the white house has a list of about 12 suspects. this morning president trump in big sky country taking another big swipe at the "new york times" for its anonymous op-ed. >> number one "the times" should never have done that. really what they've done is virtually treason. >> that from a fox interview, echoing what the president told crowds at a rally last night. >> op-ed published in the failing "new york times" by an

>> as that saga goes on, midterm elections are on us. president obama hitting the campaign trail. peter, he has tried to not get into politics too much. i guess that's about to change. >> reporter: savannah you're exactly right. the former president hitting the road to focus his party's energies on the midterm election. since leaving the white house, mr. obama has taken great pains to stay out of the political fray. later today he'll deliver a speech in down state illinois, not far from where he actually launched his own white house bid a decade ago. multiple sources close to the president tell me he's going to urge americans to embrace activism over apathy. they say he will reject what they call the rising strain of authoritarian politics, and policies and the words of one source, no one will come away thinking that he held back his punches. >> peter alexander at the white house, thank you. hollywood and fans everywhere are paying tribute to burt reynolds. the 82-year-old icon passed away

on thursday leaving behind a remarkable legacy. nbc's natalie morales is in los angeles with more. natalie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. as you know, burt reynolds was a one-of-a-kind with charm and that mischievous grin. he never failed to make the ladies swoon. in his 2015 memoir he wrote he always wanted to experience everything and go down swinging, adding nobody had more fun than i did. a legendary leading man who charmed fans on screens, big and small, a sex symbol with a certain swagger. >> don't tell me your name. let me guess. >> reporter: now gone. burt reynolds passing away thursday at the age of 82 after going into cardiac arrest in florida at his home. >> he's experiencing difficulty breathing and chest pains. >> the 911 calls released overnight. reynolds niece calling his death

they are speaking out saying they have been so touched by tremendous outpouring of love and support. as for reynolds career it was still going strong with two movies coming out this year. he was cast in quentin tarantino's "once upon a time in hollywood." he was prepared to begin shooting in just a few weeks sadly, guys. >> he'll be missed. >> natalie, thanks. meantime two more flights speaker the u.s. had to be quarantined thursday. this time happened in philadelphia after passengers showed flu-like symptoms. they are calling this sick plane syndrome and it has health officials on edge. ron mott with the very latest. ron, good morning. >> hey, savannah, good morning to you. as we all know cold and flu season is on the way but if you have been on an airplane recently, and especially overseas, and you've come back home, that flu bug might have come back home with you. this morning health officials and air travelers on heightened alert. for a second day passengers

reporting flu-like symptoms showing up in the u.s. from overseas. in texas southwest airlines said passengers on four of its flights may have been exposed to the highly contagious measles virus. >> any time you have people in a closed environment like that, where there's enormous amounts of people, these viruses can spread easily. >> latest scare, a dozen travelers sick after they landed in philadelphia on two american airlines flight, one from paris, the other from munich. officials say all the sick passengers had been in saudi arabia attending muslim pilgrim known as the hajj in mecca. both detained, doctors evaluating p on board. the 12 passengers with symptoms were quarantined briefly. health officials let them do after determining it was safe. wednesday an emracetrack flight from dubai that stopped in mecca touched town at new york's jfk reporting 19 passengers and crew felt ill. >> i felt like a flying infirmary. it was just like a symphony of coughing.

candidate in brazil stabbed during a campaign rally. it happened thursday. the far right candidate was being carried through a crowd. you can see him on the shoulder of supporters when suddenly a man with a knife stabs him in the abdomen. the assailant was caught, arrested, he was rushed to the hospital and is listed in stable condition. recent polls shows he's a clear favorite to win in the upcoming election. >> incredible. we have a recall involving the most popular vehicle in america, recalling f-150 pickup trucks to address fire concerns with seat belts. 2013 through 2018 regular cab and super cab vehicles. devices that automatically tighten passenger seat belts can generate excessive sparks when they deploy. dealers will prepare the vehicles for free. nfl kicked off in philadelphia last night. once again the spotlight was on player protest in the wake of

career. she beat anastasia in straight sets last night, a match that lasted just over an hour. she made quick work of it. now she's just one win away from her seventh u.s. open title, her 24th grand slam singles title. that would equal margaret court for the most titles in history. on saturday she will face naomi osaka, a breakout star. >> another fan favorite. we're going to get a check of the weather. we have dylan in for al. good morning, dylan. >> good morning, guys. we have rain falling through the middle of the country. this is going to be the story for the next several days. remnants of gordon pumping in moisture and a stalled front. 27 million people at risk for flash flooding. when you get some heavier downpours and factor in that through sunday we could see as much as 5 to 7 even up to 10" of rain. that could lead to some flooding back through the midwest and ohio river valley. we're also tracking the tropics. this is tropical storm florence. at one point it was a category 4 hurricane. it's weakened a lot because of

conditions it's running into. but as it continues to move westward with water temperatures at 85 to 90 degrees, it will restrengthen, although the track and intensity are still very uncertain right now. so we'll have to watch it as we get to the middle of the week. if we look at the extended version, the ensemble models, a lot of the european models take the storm into the southeastern united states. the american models tend to take it a little bit farther to the north. this is so far out in the future, we're looking at the end of next week but it is certainly worth watching as we go through the weekend to see what exactly happens as the storm

a shooting outside of a pizza place in the city )s )cow hollow ) neighborhood. it happened just before 3am at "marina pizza and cafe" on lombard street, near mel )s drive-in. the victim... an employee ... was taking out the trash when he was held at gunpoint. the gunman demanded his money... shot him... and ran. s-f-p-d found the shooting suspect and took him into custody a few blocks away on greenwich street. the victim was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for non-life threatening injuries. ad-lib toss to weather

300 priests. >> the wildfire burning out of control in northern california is still gaining momentum this morning. the delta fire has now scorched more than 22,000 acres. at least five structures have been destroyed. interstate 5 remains closed in both directions north of redding. more than 1200 firefighters are working to put those flames out. >> now to the criminal investigation facing the couple who helped raise more than $400,000 for a homeless veteran. they are now being accused of stealing from that fundraiser. nbc's kristen dahlgren here with the latest oppose that. good morning. >> good morning. a lot of people talking about this one. police executed a search warrant at the new jersey home of kaitlyn mcclure and the boyfriend. the latest twist on the story that began a viral feel good story and now is anything but. >> will you talk to us. >> authorities in new jersey are weighing whether or not a couple's act of kindness towards a homeless veteran devolved into a crime.

police hauling away appear bmw and searching the home thursday in connection with a criminal investigation. at this time no charges have been filed. nbc news reached out to the couple's attorney who said they have no comment. the case centers around $400,000 the couple raised on gofundme for johnny bobbitt jr. who game mcclure $20 when she ran out of gas last fall. more than 4,000 people paid it forward and donated. now bobbitt said the couple didn't pay it forward, they paid themselves. bobbitt is suing the couple. a judge ordered them to return the money. in court this week bobbitt's attorney said his client has only received about $75,000, and that he was told there is nothing left. >> i'm not sure that i accept that it's all gone. >> the couple did not attend the hearing, but they say they have given bobbitt about $200,000. last week they told megyn kelly they only spent $500 of the

money with bobbitt's consent at a casino. they claim they paid him back. >> but other than that $500, have you spent $1 of that $400,000 on your selves. >> no. >> nothing. >> no. >> you're representing that right here and right now. there's never going to be any proof that you did. >> no. >> the couple also admitting they feared giving bobbitt all the money they raised. >> we saw the pattern developing. >> that suggested what to you? >> that he was going to do something foolish and end up right back where he was. >> what specifically? >> the drug use. >> overnight gofundme telling "today" in a statement, johnny will be made whole and we're committing that he'll receive the balance of the unspent funds raised on his behalf. gofundme's goal has always been to ensure johnny gets support he deserves. >> what's next legally for the couple? >> right. there's a civil suit going on. they have depositions scheduled on monday morning. it's still not clear what happened to the rest of the money. bobbitt's lawyer tells us his client is very appreciative to

gofundme and the 14,000 donors. one other twist to this, a rehab program has offered him a 30-day stay. his lawyer says he's going to take them up on that. >> let's get over to dylan for a check of the weekend weather. >> good morning. it is going to be a wet weekend for folks in the middle of the country. starting off today, we have a chance of flooding from st. louis down to little rock because of the heavy rain moving in. it's stalled along the front. we've got moisture from the remnants of gordon continuing to produce heavy downpours. as we go into saturday, that risk extends into south central illinois and central independent where we could see some of that flash flooding with up to perhaps 6" or more of rain. this will continue to move eastward as we go through the weekend. it's right along this frontal system where we will see the heaviest rounds of rain. as we go into sunday, it moves into eastern ohio and western pennsylvania. this will continue to move into the northeast as we get into monday and tuesday. we're keeping an eye on the tropics. earlier we talked about tropical

which dara misunderstand claimed shefs simmenced, bullied and diminished. our chair and ceo have systematically silenced me, reduced me and essentially erased me in my role to miss america. the letter written to miss america winners goes on to say rhetoric about women and openness and transparency is great. however, the reality is quite different. mund claims she was blamed for the loss of pageant sponsor ships and was denied tunlts to spe -- opportunities to speak and appear as miss america. a former miss america herself, she tweeted, i was surprised by the letter from miss mund. also wrote, i always want to be clear that i have never bullied or silenced you. the miss america organization posted this response that says in part, the miss america organization supports cara, her letter contains mischaracterizations and many umbrella founded accusations.

first of all, what hassen about the reaction in the last few weeks. you saw miss america organization said you miss characterized, unfounded accusations. what's the fallout been for you? >> when that letter went public that i had to my sisters, i was nervous and i was scared. for the organization to then come out and say it wasn't true and it needs to be handled privately while then going publicly with it on twitter and all social media, it was tough. but coming to the competition, i felt the love and support across the nation. that's really what's important to me, to make sure miss america lives on. we're almost at 100 years, so 100 years more. it's really from the grassroots, our local directors, our state directors, our fans. it's all about them, to make sure we continue to provide amazing opportunities for women across america. >> cara, in a quick nut shell to describe what you're upset about, how would you put your finger on it. >> there's a lot of challenges

this year. any year is challenging. there are challenges none of my sisters had had, things we wanted to make sure were changed when the new leadership came in. it was frustrating and concerning. as a 24-year-old woman, i do understand, yes, this is a job. yes, i had bosses to respond to. but at the same time there's a set expectation in the workplace of how to be treated. and you know, it's this weird navigating at 24 years old what's appropriate and what's not. to be able to use my voice and to finally be able to go out and say, this is what's been going on and i want to make it better for the next girl. >> can i ask you, in your letter you said it was clear to you from the beginning there will only be one miss america at a time, and she isn't me. so who are you saying was the miss america in your organization? >> you know, there was a few different ones and for opportunities that should have been saved for miss america, for her to go out and promote what her cause is, to be able to use her voice. i'm a product of this

organization. it took me four years to win the state title to become miss america, and you have this dream of what the year is going to be. unfortunately it just didn't necessarily happen the way that i had hoped. >> but cara, you said in this letter, and it's a lengthy one, you called out gretchen carlson and said you were given a set of mandatory talking points that you had to repeat in every interview. do you remember what they were? >> i do. i do very clearly. there was three points. i actually had sent in a few talking point of things i wanted to say as miss america, none of them were included in those three points. >> what were they? what were the three points? >> the first one was that miss america is relevant. the second one was that gretchen carlson kind of started and ignited the #metoo movement. the third one is this is about well educated women, gretchen went to stanford, i wept to brown. across the nation i wanted to talk about my impact in the make a wish, children's network hospitals. i wanted to talk about getting

higher education. coming as a brown university graduate. there was all these perspectives i wanted to do and use my voice. unfortunately i was given those set talking points. it's all right because we're going to make sure for this next girl she's able to go out and talk about whatever it is she's passionate about. >> cara, do you think gretchen carlson should be in charge of the miss america pageant? >> you know, what's interesting is that prior to my letter even going out, there was 22 states who had a petition asking for a leadership change. and so my letter never ignited any of this. this was done by the states. as miss america, i serve as representation of them. i wouldn't be a local contestant, i wouldn't be a state contestant, i wouldn't be miss america if it wasn't for the hundreds of thousands of volunteers across america. >> but cara, to hoda's question, what do you think? you're spunky, you can speak your mind. what do you think? >> i do think with the lack of confidence there does need to be a leadership change, and i think it comes from more than one

individual. it's just the culture in general. you know, we are about promoting women. we're about giving scholarships, giving them the opportunity. i don't think i would have the courage to come on and be able to talk if it wasn't for this organization. >> you're holding your crown in your hand. you brought it this morning. is there a reason for that? just holding onto it for the last couple of days. >> yes. when i won miss america, it served as a symbol of my hard work and dedication. after this, you know, the next two days, once i give it up, it's going to serve as a symbol of courage and persistence. from this point on, this is a launching pad for whatever comes next. i say that night i won miss america i could accomplish anything. i came from a state that had never had it, a miss america, i was the underdog, i was never predicted to win but i also never preincome tax didded the year i would have. the courage, the support. i'm ready to go out into the real world and really be a strong, independent woman that makes a difference.

on your face but you have never forgotten that and you're always working so hard for them. >> like so many people, savannah, i think cancer has affected me in a deeply personal way. i lost my husband jay, as you probably remember. you were a young whipper snapper reporter at the time when he was just 42 years old in 1998 from colon cancer. a couple years later my older sister emily, sort of the shining star of our family died of pancreatic cancer. i just realized i have to do something about this. i have this incredible platform, "today" show. you probably remember my on air colonoscopy. then ten years ago i got together with eight remarkable women, people like sherry lansing, of course, is a superstar in hollywood and laura, an incredible producer who lost her battle with breast cancer. we said, you know, this is unacceptable. we have to come up with better treatments. we have to fund these incredible scientists who are working tirelessly to come up with
