tv Today in the Bay NBC September 10, 2018 5:00am-6:01am PDT
5:00 am
for the most part. some days we don't see that much. >> yes, so many lights. >> thanks so much for starting your morning with us here "today in the bay," i'm marcus washington. mike will have a look at your commute in a moment. kari has a nice look at the forecast. i love these temperatures. >> it's going to be a great week, cooler temperatures. it was kind of warm in some spots over the weekend inland. in fremont, visibility is clear and we're going to see temperatures going from the upper 50s, nice cool start and a fairly comfortable afternoon with high there is reaching into the upper 70s. we do still have some upper 80s in the inland valleys. more on that and also some cooler air for the middle of the week, and mike, we have an update on what's been happening out there as we head to the south bay. >> we saw that slowing for san jose, the crash on 680 there, look at the rest of the bay, looks great. there's still a crash on the shoulder somewhere between grant line and north flynn road westbound, any commute direction not presenting much of an additional issue. the slowing we saw has cleared over the last couple of minutes.
5:01 am
it was just as the tow truck arrived before we took to the air and that's why the sensors read a little bit of slowing toward the jackson lee overcrossing for the pedestrians. smooth drive throughout the rest of the south bay but there is a new crash on the grid. i'll track that, might be off 101 a little farther south. farther north this is 580 coming across richmond to san rafael, an easy drive, a steady flow of traffic there at the toll plaza. back to you. >> 5:01 right now. new this morning, today we get a back story there including what went into producing that new tell-all book "fear," about the trump white house. bob woodward will be on the "today" show later this morning but already talking. "today in the bay's" tracie potts has more on that and another former aide speaking out, tracie? >> we've heard from amarosa but since then bob woodward himself moments ago on the "today" show saying there are serious concerns about national security inside the white house, based on his reporting, which he says
5:02 am
includes more than 100 interviews and hundreds of pages of notes. president trump this morning tweeting that his book is a joke. >> that people better wake up to what's going on. >> reporter: bob woodward tells cbs he was meticulous and careful, interviewing more than 100 people for his book "fear," detailing chaos inside the trump white house. >> people who work for him are worried that he will sign things or give orders that threaten the national security or the financial security of the country, or the world. >> reporter: now backing woodward's claims and those in an anonymous "new york times" editorial, former white house aide amarosa. manigold. >> when he would do something crazy unhinged, foot positions from one hour to the next we
5:03 am
hashtag it tfa. >> 25th amendment, removing a president from office. "the times" editorials said aides discussed it often. >> absurd. >> reporter: the white house dismissed her as a person with no credibility as they hunt for the "times" writer who claims to be part of a resistance working against the president from the inside. and another "not me" on that one, vice president pence says he's willing to take a lie detector test to prove he didn't write it, marcus. >> wow. we shall be waiting to see that. thank you so much, tracie. later analysis of all the news out of washington, scott mcgrew has your checks and balances, coming up at 5:45. of course you can also follow him on twitter and facebook. right now we continue to track the snell fire burning in the napa county. evacuations remain in place for people living in the berryessa estates. the fire broke out saturday afternoon.
5:04 am
so far, more than 2,400 acres have burned. cal fire says it's 20% contained and the flames are threatening almost 200 homes. but so far, no homes nor structures have burned. one couple we spoke with chose not to evacuate. last night, they sprayed down their home as that fire burned within yards from their neighborhood. >> we lost our house in the valley fire, and we didn't want to do that again so we've been through that once and that was it. we're going to stay and protect our house. >> nearly 500 firefighters including a crew from san mateo are on those front lines. right now we want to brings in meteorologist kari hall to get a look at the weather because a lot of times the weather can fight against what firefighters are trying to do. >> right. >> the conditions we're experiencing this week, will they help or hipd nder in. >> it's going to help. we'll see cooler temperatures and breezy wins winds kicking up
5:05 am
and that will bring in more humidity. our air quality today for the north bay will still be moderate as we are going to see some smoky skies there, but the rest of the bay area not as smoky and here is why. our winds coming in from the north will have more of an easterly turn as we go through the day. even as the winds pick up it's going to carry some of that smoke away from the bay area, mostly into the central valley. our conditions out there now, we've had some good recovery as far as humidity, right now coming up to about 76% and the wind is calm. temperatures are cool now only in the low 50s and as we go through the day we have some comfortable air with those temperatures by noon in the upper 70s. so these conditions as of now will continue to help those wildfires for the snell fire. we'll have more updates on that, marcus. >> thanks, kari. 5:05 right now. steps are being taken to address a long-standing issue of sex workers in the mission district of san francisco and it's more than simply just arresting those
5:06 am
involved. it's part of a bigger problem. "today in the bay's" been following this story he's live at the golden gate bridge. pete, tell us about what's being done. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus especially in that shot in the cap area i spoke to them back in july who feel that the sex workers and the issue there has brought a lot of crime to their neighborhood so at least this is a small step that police in that area are taking to address this issue. as far as what they're doing, police announced this at the latest community meeting at their police station ray new sex work ear baitment unit, a four-officer unit that's currently in operation in the area. according to the captain of the mission station he says arrests have already been made to the johns who are soliciting sex workers and also the pimps who the sex workers are working for. another issue that folks are concerned about in the area are looking out for those sex workers in the area, and police
5:07 am
are offering what's called lead referrals. lead stands for law enforcement assistance diversion. instead of issuing a citation or arrests they'll bring the sex workers to the police station and offer them social services to get them out of the business. looks like police are addressing this problem that's been going on in this area for decades. we're live here at the golden gate bridge, piece serratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks for the update there. >> another successful launch and landing for spacex falcon 9 rocket. >> three, two, one, zero. ignition, liftoff. >> look at it go. this is new video showing the rocket take off from cape canaveral about eight hours ago. it put a communications satellite called tellstar 18 vantage into orbit. the satellite will give broadband service to asia. the rocket came back down to earth and stuck that landing on

5:09 am
80s. it's still going to be warm there today as we look at all of our microclimates reaching up to 89 in antioch today and san jose 80 degrees, a nice breeze, cooler than yesterday and in oakland today 72 degrees, 85 in napa and 67 in san francisco. we'll talk about some cooler temperatures in the forecast coming up and mike in san jose has it cleared up yet? >> it has. the crash cleared and the other incident that popped up looked like it was off the 101/85 split on surface streets. disabled vehicle so not a problem and not a major concern for our commute. we're looking at the rest of the bay and a smooth flow of traffic. we'll check over here. we have the slowing still of course out of the altamont and that crash on the shoulder for west 580, it's a distraction as you approach north flynn road but not a major problem. the slowing does its typical gradual speed increase as you come out of the altamont corridor and by the time you're toward livermore, the dublin interchange everything is at speed. over here a great drive here, walnut creek interchange. the rest of cocoa county toward

the bay bridge moves nicely but the toll plaza shows this big backup and it's blending in, first the cash lanes, they never really cleared at 5:00 which often is the case, in the clearing, i mean, but today no. we have the build already starting a little bit early and i'm a little concerned about some slowing i see for the eastbound direction out of san francisco as well. we're watching the bay bridge carefully. i'll give you an update with another view coming up. 5:10 right now. september is national suicide prevention month. while many of us want to help often that question of what to do, what to say to someone who is struggling comes up. here is a script from the national suicide prevention lifeli lifeline. they say if you have a friend who is thinking about suicide, ask him if they thought about how they would do it and separate them from anything they could use to hurt themselves. this is part of their be the one two campaign. in this instance you could be the one to keep them safe. that number for the national suicide prevention lifeline is

new low-cost car into the united states from china because of the tariffs. president trump says hey, build it here instead. apple just sent this letter to the u.s. trade representative detailing the problems it expects from president trump's tariffs on goods made in china. apple says the watch, the ear pods, wireless headphones and chargers and cables are going to get more expensive because of the president's tariffs. the iphone won't. when a country like ours slaps tariffs on another country they lift the certain types of products that will face tariffs. the iphone doesn't qualify yet. once president trump heard the letter he tweeted there is an easy solution there would be zero tax and a tax incentive, make your products in the united states instead of china, start building new plants now, exciting. mr. trump claims tim cook promised to build three major apple plants in the u.s., he said that back in the summer of 2017. of course, apple iphones aren't built in factories owned by

right way it is a good thing. you post a lot of the forecast for the bay area a lot of times, think that we can look out for us. good way to use it. >> it can be inspiring, too, and a lot of good things. >> in moderation, like anything. >> right, that's what we're doing this morning, keeping you connected and also looking at some nice weather in the forecast this week, keeping you informed. here is a live look outside in us so with a nice clear start. temperatures are cool, so as you make your way out to diradon station this morning ul wiyou we in the mid-50s at 6:00 and temperatures from the mid-50s at 6:00 to 5 at 10:00, so a nice little warmup and it happens fast, at noon we're at 74 degrees, continuing to go up from there as we head up to 80 degrees in downtown san jose. it's still going to be hot in gilroy with a high of 90 today, and we have some upper 80s and even a few low 90s in a few spots for the inland parts of the east bay, vallejo up to 86 and oakland today 74 degrees, as we look at the peninsula, half

moon bay reaches 62 and redwood city 76 degrees in san francisco, staying in the 60s today, and some very gusty winds picking up. we'll also have some breezy winds for the north bay, and still some hazy skies with a high in santa rosa reaching 87 degrees. if you're planning to go to the raiders game tonight kickoff is at 7:20 and going to be cool and breezy. we'll be at about 64 degrees and the temperatures dropping back into the upper 50s. right on the other side of the bay we have the giants game and first pitch at 7:15 so it's going to be busy around that time on the roads and we're looking at some temperatures that will stay cool. make sure you're dressed appropriately because it's going to be hichilly out there. this swirl of clouds, this area of low pressure will start to drop down as we head toward the middle of the week, bring us more clouds and a nice little cooldown with some gusty winds by wednesday. our high temperature for some of our warmer spots will only reach into the mid-70s. we'll see that for a couple of
5:20 am
days and then it rebounds, as high pressure moves back in. we'll be back in the mid 80s for the weekend with san francisco staying cool in the 60s all week long. mike, you're a little concerned about the bay bridge. >> i am, kari. we saw some slowing, sensors for both directions were lighting up orange and red, slow speeds for this time of morning out of san francisco. look where i'm pointing right here. that is the lower deck. over on the san francisco side of treasure island two decks and we had the lower deck for eastbound 880 showing slowing from the city over to mid span. i think it was just one set of trucks as they cleared some of the overnight roadwork. we were tracking to see any problems, we did see a steady flow of lights you see the headlight there is. things appeared to be moving smoothly but that was in the area of concern, we saw also this early backup for the westbound direction. it formed in the cash lanes and the metering lights must be turned on and all lanes are backing up to past the 808 overcrossing and continuing to build for all the feeder routes
5:21 am
toward the bay bridge toll plaza. we are starting to see the sensors out of san francisco just cleared and we see this slowing up the incline but nothing worse and no incidents reported. again i've got my eye closely on anything that might be affecting the bay bridge traffic flow, but it may be a few more cars heading there a little bit early now. there is a crash reported in the area but doesn't look like it's affecting the toll-taking lanes and the south bay cleared of an earlier crash, same thing out of the altamont and easy flow outside of the bay bridge. good note as well we have b.a.r.t. service and the rest of the transit agencies on time. note for b.a.r.t. for folks fram yar with the warm springs line after 6:00 you had to transfer to make the last leg of the stretch fremont to warm springs. that's not the case monday through saturday. good note for folks travel back home tonight. coming up, nbc bay area responds. >> if last year's wildfires damaged or destroyed your home, your input is needed to perhaps help everyone in the state. i'm consumer investigator chris

5:33 am
throughout the state. the utility tells us the trees need to be removed to allow first responders access during an earthquake or another emergency but michael and gina dawson behind the group save lafayette trees sued to stop the tree cutting. they say pg&e has their safety priorities backwards, they should be focused on section of exposed gas pipeline that runs along lafayette maraga trail or lack of automotive shutoff valves. when a pipeline burst and caught fire in san bruno it took pg&e 90 minutes to manually turn off the gas because there wasn't an automatic shutoff valve. eight people died, 38 homes were destroyed. >> it's brought nothing but a lot of confusion, frustration to communities. not that feeling of pipeline safety, which is why we started this. we don't trust now the pipeline being used.
5:34 am
>> we want to tell pg&e we want to work with them. we don't think taking down trees is the right priority. we're willing to work with them on setting those priorities. >> reporter: pg&e tells us they are aware of and evaluating what if anything to do about that exposed gas pipeline along the lafay yaet marauga trail. their safety engineers say trees are the number one priority, just like you can't park a car in front of a fire hydrant you can't have trees blocking access to a high pressure gas pipeline. residents submitted about 150 questions and concerns to pg&e not only about trees but about pipeline safety in general. you can see on your tv screen the utility did respond in this 72-page long document. we'll be sure to link that to our website nbcbayarea.com. the city of lafayette is facilitating this afternoon's meeting. this meeting will be at 4:00 at the learning center behind me in downtown lafayette. reporting live, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people want to take part in that. thanks for the update.

5:34 right now. police chased through south bay streets, ends with gunfire and a suspect in the hospital. santa clara police arrested this man, 38-year-old manuel rico. officers say he's a known gang member who stole a car early yesterday morning. when an officer spotted the car and tried to pull rico over he allegedly sped off. rico rammed several patrol cars and ditched the stolen car near may ellen avenue and scott street in san jose. as he ran off officers fired. the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries and police took him into custody. terrifying afternoon in gilroy a suspect drove a car onto a field next to where hundreds of pop warner players were competing in a tournament. >> everyone is safe but there are a lot of unanswered questions. kris sanchez is live in gilroy with the suspect and how he ended up so close to the children. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. we will show you video in a

moment that does not capture the chaos of the moment when the suspect was driving on a field here behind me, close to all of those players who were on the field, along with their parents and other fans. and when gilroy police arrived on scene, the suspect was trying to drive away from the location. the suspect allegedly drove his car into an officer on foot, gilroy police say that officer was basically cornered and had no way to get to safety, other than to discharge that officer's weapon, so that officer is now on administrative leave pending the investigation. the suspect after that gunfire happened lost control of his car, and eventually did surrender to police. so here's what we know about that suspect. according to the initial law enforcement bulletin out of fresno, the suspect is a former police officer and has access to firearms. he twice called 911, mentioning the football tournament under way here at gilroy high and mentioning the potential kidnapping of a woman in fresno.
5:37 am
police say he has no ties to gull roy, no ties to the high school, no ties to pop warner, so why he ended up here is really anyone's guess at this point. now, as you mentioned, no one was hurt in that shooting, including the suspect himself, but the suspect is in custody, and now there are a lot of questions that remain unanswered, including why he did end up here in gilroy? we are working to get to the bottom of all of that and will keep you posted. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a lot going on there. thank you so much to walk us through that story. >> 5:37 now. happening today, almeida county leaders try to cook up some potential regulations for pop-up restaurants. unlike other bay area cities and county, almeida's permit process for pop-up restaurants has slipped through the cracks. health inspectors have recently shut down some popular pop-up restaurants due to health code issues. eye sa a supervisor's health committee will host today's hearing. a couple of bay area mayors

toll plaza. i did see some flashing lights pausing and then moving up the incline and everything looks like it's cleared now, but what i did see also was the fact that these folks here started to really back up. the metering lights are on. you see how everybody's stopped here and off to the races as you pass by that expansion overhead. that indicates the metering lights, metering the traffic keeping the bay bridge itself moving smoothly over toward san francisco, that yash clearcrash over the last couple of minutes, the south bay, tri valley, east bay looking good. palo alto bay shore freeway still at speed right here. all right, welcoming off of a great weekend, you know we are always thinking about the weekend. all the great things to do. >> yep. it's only monday. >> that means we're four days away from the weekend. >> we're just thinking about the weekend. >> we're already thinking about it on this monday morning. let me show you how the week shapes up leading into the weekend. we are going to be very warm today for the inland valleys, a
