"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to weather in a moment. right now mike with traffic has concerns for drivers. >> we had early concerns but looks like things are holding up pretty well. the speed is enfors for the last 20 minutes have been holding steady and this is a lighter volume than we often see on a tuesday. yesterday we saw monster commute in many parts of the bay really kicking in and holding steady until about 9:00 and then things started to ease up, so it does look like more folks are dropping their kids off early, letting them get to school on their own. looking to the south bay look how light 101 is. it's improving over the last 15 minutes and a live shot it was going to show you some headlights but right now it shows you nothing so we'll move on to the transit system as we get out of your way. notice the transit systems there are no delays and that's good

news. kari, for folks at outdoor stations what is the outlook? >> right now as we take a live look outside in san francisco this morning, we are looking at a nice clear start with a view of the golden gate bridge. as you make your way out the door for school this morning, we are going to see those temperatures in san jose starting out in the mid-50s and then a lot more comfortable for later on today with highs reaching only into the upper 70s. 79 degrees in san jose, 87 in concord. still warm in some of our inland spots. 73 today in oakland, and the high in san francisco will be up to 67 degrees. here is an update on hurricane florence, now a category 4 hurricane, and still on track to move toward the carolinas. so for more on that i'll send it over to you, marcus. >> thanks, kari. developing now, here is a look at that spot at the path of the powerful hurricane kari was just mentioning. this is the scene from wrightsville beach in north carolina. i want to show you brand new video, a hurricane hunter plane

actually flew through the eye of florence. on the ground people waiting in long lines, really to stock up on the gas and groceries, bracing for that storm to hit. >> reporter: are you surprised to see so many people here? >> not really. >> not last minute, you know. >> i don't like getting stuck without what i need. >> even if you don't know anyone out there on the east coast, that storm is impacting air travel. thousands of flights could be impacted. five major airlines already say they'll allow their passengers and travelers there to change certain flights for no fee. it is 6:02 right now. dysfunction in the south bay school district is reaching new heights this morning. a school word member may be legally required to stay away from the superintendent. this is just the latest development for the troubled alum rock school district. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been following the story and joins us with what this all means. good morning, kris.

>> reporter: hi there, laura. today the superintendent and one board member will spend time away from the school district in alum rock and instead be before a judge in a santa clara county courtroom. superintendent elaria bauer is seeking to maintain a temporary retraining order she has against a trustee tran. since august 2nd he was ordered to stay away from her, her husband and her daughter. today the superintendent and the trustee will be before the judge. tru trusstrustee ken tran is accused of harassing the superintendent, in a closed door meeting related to business. he allegedly threatened to kick your expletive, i'll let you use your imagination in referencing of a firing squad. trustee karen martinez alleges harassment and reported it to police. tran doesn't dispute what he said but told "the mercury news" that what he said was mischaracterized. tran has not been alone in his

criticism of the superintendent. other trustees questioned bauer's management of the district but bauer is very popular with parents who have been holding candidate forums in thing recent weeks in hopes of finding people who will focus on the education of their children. rather than the board room drama. if the superintendent is granted a permanent restraining order, the board member cannot contact her in any way, cannot speak to her in public, in person, cannot email her, cannot call her, text her, can't even send her a piece of mail and can't show up in her office, here at the district, nor at her home, which could make things very difficult in terms of doing business in the alum rock school district until the next election, whether or not that board member is replaced. we'll keep you up to date on what's happening in the courtroom as we find out later today. in san jose, kris sanchez "today in the bay." >> quite a bit of unfighting there. thank you for the update. >> 6:04 right now. bay area janitors are taking

the me too movement to the streets. those who marched you can see right here started in san francisco yesterday, and ended up in berkeley last night. more than 100 women led that walk to support a new state bill, that measure aims to give better protection to janitors at risk of sexual assault or violence. organizers plan to continue the march from berkeley this morning, and actually plan to arrive in sacramento on friday. this morning, a palo alto elementary school teacher found guilty of sexually abusing a girl for over a decade wants a new trial. the "palo alto weekly" reports michael arrow hired a new lawyer and accused his prosecutors of misconduct. he claims they allowed a "highly prejudicial testimony." he also was found guilty in february. prosecutors say that he abused his girlfriend's daughter from the time she was 11 years old to 13. paper says sentencing for the conviction is delayed so the judge can respond to this new trial motion. it is :0 aright now.

happening today, contra costa county leader also consider a move to save money that may also lead to changes in health care monitoring because governor jerry brown recently signed a bill to dissolve the west contra costa health care board of directors. it is possible supervisors will consider appointing themselves to that board but other options will also be considered. the health care board currently makes financial decisions like paying bond holders and bills. the meeting takes place tonight. the plan to build a hotel near future adobe and google sites in downtown san jose just got larger. developers are proposing to add a 19-story hotel next to the deanza in downtown san jose. it was expected to have originally 220 rooms, but now "the mercury news" reports developers want to add an extra 50 rooms plus a rooftop restaurant. if completed, tech and business workers can stay at the hotel and have a short walk to adobe and the proposed google village. all right, so if you have

any spare cash, this might be the home for you. it turns out a whopping $23 million mansion in palo alto reportedly just won't sell. i'll break down what you'll get. the two-story old home there on adobe, old adobe road is decked out with a sauna, theater, 1,000-bottle wine cellar and according to "the chronicle" despite the booming housing market, no buyers are willing to pay that money for that beautiful home. how about $20 million. >> i have $20, how long will that get me in the house. >> i'll add in my 10. >> we can stand on the porch, i guess. here is a live look in dublin as the sun rises. it's a nice and clear start, and it won't be as hazy today. if you're making your way out to the dublin b.a.r.t. station, grab a jacket. temperatures will be cool starting out in the mid-50s and as you head out later on today, temperatures start to warm up, headed into the upper 70s by early afternoon.

press conference since august 22nd on monday, brought out the president's top economic adviser. president trump also made a series of tweets about the economy, including this one that the gdp was higher than the unemployment rate for the first time in 100 years. this was almost immediately pegged as wrong. this actually happens fairly often, about 60 times in the last 100 years. somehow a zero got added. >> but what is true is that it's the highest in ten years, and at some point, somebody conveyed it to him, adding a zero to that and they shouldn't have done that. i can say we numbers geeks at the white house are grateful when the press finds mistakes we make, we don't like making mistakes but we're grateful when they're pointed out. >> that might have been a typo but the president has had trouble with gdp a second time in another tweet in which he confuses quarterly gdp with yearly gdp. president trump would need a magic wand to get to 4% gdp, stated president obama.

i guess i have a magic wand, 4.2% and will do much better than that. marcus and laura, got to read along to understand the president's error here, so let's keep this tweet up. the 4% that president obama was talking about is annual gdp. the 4.2% president trump is talking about is the latest quarterly gdp estimate. we've crossed 4% quarterly gdp several time, in fact we've crossed 5%. this is one of the analogies, it's relatively easy getting an "a" on your math homework. it's hard to get an "a" for the math semester. you're measuring two different things. we used to understand facts were facts, numbers were numbers. when you compare these in different ways it becomes misleading. >> apples and oranges. >> apples and oranges. >> thanks, scott. it's 6:15, starting to look a lot like hockey season at the

>> pretty cool to see how they do it always. >> always wanted to ride on the zamboni. >> and drive it. look all sharky. looking outside it will be a nice cool day. >> we're in for some cooler temperatures around the bay area, and we'll enjoy also our valleys cooling down, as we go into tomorrow and thursday. but right now, we start out with a clear start, live look outside and palo alto getting you out the door this morning with our temperatures that will be in the low 60s at 10:00. look at that, low 70s for 4:00 today and the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen. yes, these are high temperatures for the south bay. we'll reach up to 79 degrees in san jose today. we're still going to have some warm spots like antioch and concord reaching 87. 85 in martinez. also 85 today in santa rosa, san francisco, some upper 60s, and then it will cool off quickly, if you're going to the giants game tonight, wear a lot of layers. we're only going to be at about 61 degrees at first pitch and

some upper 50s with clear skies for tonight. our skies are about to get cloudy and here is why. we have an area of low pressure in this trough that is this elongated area of low pressure. we can see the clouds following that trough and as it continues to dip, we will get some cooler air being pushed in farther from the north and also a lot more clouds so this is the way it shapes up on our hour-by-hour outlook. it's clear today and for the morning tomorrow, but then by early afternoon, we'll start to see the clouds moving in, and that will also keep our temperatures from rising too much, as we go throughout the day. as we get an update on what's happening in the pacific, paul continues to weaken, so it's now a tropical depression. we may be seeing some of the last advisories on that, and then looking at olivia, that has weakened to a tropical storm. it was a category 1 hurricane yesterday, and it's expected to continue on as a tropical storm, as it moves right through the hawaiian islands, churning up a lot of waves and bringing some rain over the next few days.

and then hurricane florence, the big headline for the carolinas over the next couple of days, it still remains as a category 4 and may continue on as a category 4 hurricane, as it approaches the southeastern coast, bringing lots of rain, expected to make landfall on friday. we'll watch that. as we bring it back home our temperature also feel more like fall over the next few days. breezy winds, a little bit more cloud cover once again, highs reaching into the upper 70s and for san francisco, we'll get some more sunshine. it stays cool, highs reaching the mid-60s. over to mike, we have a new crash for oakland? >> i do, kari. overall the commute compared to yesterday looking really good. 6:19, almost 6:20, folks and look at the sensors all over the bay. you have a little slowing for san jose, just a little for pleasanton and 880 and hayward and union city there's a build there. i'll talk about the san mateo bridge in a second. i want to show you this crash as kari mentioned southbound 880

73 degrees. we'll talk about the weekend come up in seven minutes and mike gets you out of the door with a look at commute. >> i have a beautiful view of the bay bridge, the sun is a nice silhouette with the hills. we did see up until about five minutes ago really good movement at the toll plaza. i know all lanes are filled in right now but you still see the fast track lane and the cash lane. the cash lanes are key. they are moving well but over here top of your screen starting to fill in, that's indicating much more traffic coming in out of the maze. still no major problems getting to the bay bridge. it is over here getting away from the bay bridge south 880 shows us a lot of slowing and that crash looked like it hasn't completely cleared and that backup and all the lights jamming up into the area slowing your commute now, they're distracted and so folks are tapping their brakes past oak and fifth and 13th there. be careful in both directions. you'll be hitting your brakes but the crash is still southbound in the direction of downtown. we're looking toward the rest of the bay, there's hayward and the south bay, just a mild build. back to you.

>> thank you so much, mike. breaking news for you this morning in the north bay, a vegetation fire tons grow there and evacuations are under way. >> the fire lines set, the story quickly developing. pete suratos joins us in fairfax, just filed this report. >> reporter: good morning to you, guys. we're here at la gonita school, this is one of the evacuation centers for folks in the area, as crews continue to battle the irving fire. i want to show you guys an aerial view, this is from chp aircraft where you can see where the fire is burning. we're talking about steep terrain in the samuel p. taylor state park area. this fire began roughly around 8:00 p.m. and as i mentioned it's in steep terrain but crews are making progress on this, using bulldozers, water tenders, engines and hand crews to contain this fire. now, here are the latest numbers according to marin county fire, facebook page, saying the fire is currently at 100 acres.

10% containment and still are evacuations in place between mountain king road all the way down to baranca. you see the list of roads there on your screen. our crews did speak with an evacuee who says she wasn't in the evacuation zone of the area, but we are told to evacuate. since she owned animals she had to make the move. >> if it was just myself it would still be stressful but when you're responsible for animals, it's, the stress level goes up and it's not their time to get out of their pen and do anything. i wanted to make sure they didn't try to bolt in the middle of the night. >> reporter: we'll bring you any updates as they come in. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, pete. 6:33 right now. developing now, hurricane florence, look at the size of this, taking aim at the east coast. new this morning help is on the way from the bay area. bob riddell is joining us live with what we learned overnight and how we're sending crews.

good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. there's a group of 16 local firefighters trained in water rescue and they've been on the road for a number of hours now for a very long road trip, talking about a 2,900 mile road trip to north carolina where hurricane florence is expected to make landfall early friday morning. this was the scene overnight in oakland. this is the warehouse where california task force 4 stores all of their equipment. members of that team packed a lot of gear for their trip out east, including eight boats and enough fuel, food and water to be self-sufficient for five to seven days on their own. they are driving nonstop, expect to arrive in north carolina thursday morning, and then wait for florence to come ashore. >> find a safe place to shelter, whether away from where it's hitting or to the north or south of where it's hitting. our practice is not to endanger our rescuers and make sure they're safe during the brunt of the storm and as soon as it gets to a safe but acceptable level we'll deploy resources and start

search and recovery efforts. >> reporter: task force 4 will receive its specific orders from a local incident commander in north carolina after the hurricane makes landfall. task force 4 will strictly be involved in water rescues. the team is part of fema's urban search and rescue program. there are 28 teams nationwide deployed right now, some in hawaii but most are headed to north carolina. reporting live here in union city, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> thanks. 6:35 right now. happening today, leaders from around the world are gathering in san francisco for the global action summit, which officially kicks off tomorrow at the mosconi center. today governor brown will attend a kickoff event with forest and climate experts, they plan to announce global funding efforts to combat climate change. former vice president al gore will attend a second kickoff event a symposium on how to improve global climate. some of the focus including the

devastation there in california from the recent wildfires. a follow-up for you now to a story we brought you yesterday morning the fight over trees in lafayette. last night city council members decided to put that issue on their agenda in the coming weeks but they don't expect a decision any time soon. as we reported yesterday, pg&e wants to tear down hundreds of trees, saying they block access. neighbors say that doesn't make sense. both sides showed up to last night's meeting. listen for yourself. >> we're comparing it to how the fire department needs access to fire hydrants. they don't need them all the time, but when they need them, they sure need them right away. >> it's something pg&e say they are doing for safety but at the same time they are ignoring threats to our community like exposed pipeline and no survey of our line. >> as of right now pg&e cannot cut the trees down. citizens group filed two lawsuits last year to keep the utility from acting.

>> it is :36 right now. be warned the commute on highway 17 will be a little more difficult starting later this morning. cal trans will work on highway 17 between vine hill road and scotts valley and summit road. the northbound lane closed from 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 in the afternoon. tomorrow and thursday a southbound lane will close between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. this is maintenance to get the highway ready for the winter. if this is the raiders last season in oakland, it didn't get off to such a great start. >> the raiders lost their opener last night against the l.a. rams at the oakland coliseum. a live look now, quiet but last night the black hole was rumbling with fans pumped to welcome back head coach jon gruden. in the second half the rams took advantage of carr's three interceptions and scored 23 unanswered points. the final score there 33-13. . we'll get them next time, right,

mike? >> and they still win for best dressed audience, black hole and all the spikes in the skulls, good stuff. unfortunately i have to take you over into 880, which not down by the oakland coliseum but farther north say traffic alert. this changed over the last few minutes. all over most of the bay looks great. that slowing is even worse now. the crash update comes in southbound 880 at 16th. i told you the crash they're moving everything off to the shoulder. it involved a motorcyclist up and walking around from what i understood but after that update, turns out that person was hit by a truck. this person is alive and they're doing medical treatment at the area but your left two lanes are blocked and there's quite a distraction so the northbound commute direction is why we've seen such a big build over the last five minutes. concern for the driver or the motorcycle and everyone else involved, your two lanes are blocked, two lanes are opened getting away from 980 and headed

toward 16th. that is an alert from oakland's chp division and so they will not be opening those lanes for at least the time being. we'll track that the rest of the bay. the rest of the bay is just fine. it's through downtown oakland you have that big alert. over here on the peninsula look how beautiful this drive is, no problems for the bay shore freeway in toward embarcadero, good stuff. >> not bad at all. we can see toward the weekend. >> a little closer. it's right there. >> it's always better when you make it past monday and we are going to have a nice weekend across across the bay area. let's look at the forecast. some mid 80s still possible today, but it will bring down temperatures tomorrow, holding steady coasting on into the weekend. san francisco also looking at our weather continuing with some more sunshine and mid-60s in the forecast, so how about going to napa valley this weekend, just a heads up we have some wildfires burning in the area and there will be drifts of spoke but

reaching into the mid-70s today, really nice day ahead, and our cool weather continues through the middle of the week. we'll look at all of our microclimates and uptate date o tropics in five minutes. >> right now we have this alert southbound 880. we have a crash still in the lane, you want to use eastbound 580 coming down through oakland and on the northbound side as well because the crash is attracting eyes. 6:44 right now. live look at san jose this morning. two leaders at alum rock school district will meet in front of a judge today to settle a dispute involving claims of harassment and intimidation. the superintendent there got a retraining order against a school board trustee whom the superintendent says threatened her. the restraining order expires today and a judge will decide whether to make a permanent restraining order there. this comes as the superintendent tries to remove the school board

accused of making sweetheart deals with a contracting company. new this morning, three men facing charges for stabbing a teenager in the back in morgan hill. we have photos of two of the suspects. the third only 17 years old. so police did not release his picture. this happened friday. the 16-year-old victim went to the hospital and is critically injured. officers took all three suspects into custody on saturday. they face attempted homicide charges. today the battle over one south bay group's solution to help the homeless takes a new step. >> over the weekend the san jose hope village formed on this parking lot just south of the airport. the homeless supporters say it's safe and clean with proper fencing and a toilet and community area. but on monday, eviction notices went out. the site is on state property. people there say no one actually uses the lot and it's away from neighborhoods and there is another encampment ten feet away.

>> because we don't see any alternative. somebody has to press the city and the county to do something about the thousands of people that are living in encampments in horrible conditions. >> the homeless advocates are holding a rally today at 5:00 p.m. and it happens at the parking lot on rough drive. authorities say someone purposely set a planned parenthood building on fire and the fbi needs help identifying the person. this is new video just in to our newsroom. the arsonist seen here caught on surveillance video back in july. the scene lighting the entrance of the watsonville planned parenthood on fire. the person's face you saw there just isn't visible in that video. the fbi is offering a $10,000 reward for help finding that person. new for you this morning, a new law signed by governor brown will make flying drones over state prisons illegal. the ban comes after several drones were found dropping drugs and cell phones into california prisons. senator jerry hill pushed the bill saying there was no

previous law specifically banning the use of drones as a smuggling method. the new law does not apply to correctional workers who may have to use drones on the job. it will all take effect in january. 6:47. the pentagon has its eye on syria and korea. >> scott mcgrew, america is preparing for air strikes in syria if they're needed. >> that's right, good morning. britain and france markets have made the same warning. the russians and assad's government are bombing the last rebel stronghold in syria, and millions of civilians are at risk. the three allies, u.s., uk and france warning if chemical weapons are used, we will attack. this is video here of russian air strikes using conventional weapons. and then there's north korea. nbc news has reported the north koreans are building new nuclear bombs, but the white house says it's pleased with kim's progress toward denuclearization citing the recent celebration in north

to have moderate air quality there and good as you head south of the golden gate bridge. making your way out to the door to diridon station in san jose temperatures cool in the mid-50s and sunshine helps to warm us up. at noon we're at 74 degrees. comfortable and headed into the upper 70s today and your school day forecast also looks good in martinez. it will be warmer starting out at 60 degrees at lunch time, in the low 70s and then some upper 70s by 1:00 this afternoon. here is a look at our highs today, up to 82 in livermore, 73 in oakland, 85 in santa rosa, and san francisco today reaching 67 degrees. so as you're getting dressed this morning, it's still the summer of warmth that we have gotten used to, and you do need a t-shirt and shorts to stay comfortable today. we are going to have cooler air on the way, more clouds tomorrow. we can see those clouds elongated area of low pressure, you can see the dip in the clouds there, and that trough,

and that will continue to make its way into the bay area for tomorrow, so at it does so we're going to feel a change in our temperatures, and also some very dry air moving in with some clouds overhead. so we're going to see an increase in cloud cover starting by early tomorrow afternoon. here we are going through the time line as we go into tomorrow evening, partly to mostly cloudy skies, and our highs only reaching into the upper 70s. as we look at what's happening out there in the pacific, we do still have a couple of tropical systems we're keeping an eye on. paul weakened to a tropical depression, and then we have tropical storm olivia that continues to move through the hawaiian islands, and it's doing as expected, cutting right through the middle of the hawaiian islands, and it will continue to weaken over the next several days and we have hurricane florence, of course, making big headlines for the carolinas that may move in as a major hurricane by the end of the week and we'll have more updates on that. we're looking at some fall-like weather, upper 70s for wednesday, thursday and friday.

nice weekend ahead, too. slightly warmer. while san francisco still has temperatures reaching into the low to mid-60s. mike, that traffic alert still continues in oakland? >> it does, kari, on the nimitz freeway, folks. the rest of the bay looking great and we are seeing that big volume over the last 20 minutes for hayward and the south bay pushing north out of san jose but yes, that traffic alert continues right here, southbound 880, as you're traveling down through the area downtown. very big issue, as the crash there still blocks at least your left lane, possibly your left two lanes. that will continue to be a problem, folks. as you're traveling northbound, because that crash is over in the center divide area, a big distraction and a big backup suddenly forming over the last ten minutes, much more traffic flow in that direction as well. back out to waze, if you are member of a waze team you can join in and get more information. we have a report of about a 25-minute delay in the southbound direction, waze calculates that out, comes from an unnamed wazer.

high school. paramedics were called out to richmond high school yesterday afternoon after five students showed up in the nurse's office complaining of nausea. it turns out they had eaten marijuana edibles. the students are going to be okay and stool ochool officials they could face some kind of punishment. bay area janitors taking the me too movement to the streets. they ended under in berkeley last night. more than 100 women led that walk to support a new state bill measure aims to give better protection to janitors at risk of sexual assault or violence. organizers plan to continue the march from berkeley this morning, and actually plan to arrive in sacramento on friday. be warned there for your commute on highway 17, it will be more difficult starting later this morning. cal trans will start working there on highway 17, this is between vine hill road and scotts valley and summit road. the northbound lane will be closed from 10:00 this morni
