landmark. today, thursday, september 13th, 2018. this is today with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. welcome to "today." thank you for joining us on this thursday morning. big news story to cover today. >> yes, and it's almost here. take a look. the outer hanbands of hurricane florence have reached the coast of the carolinas. >> it is increasing in size. now bigger than north and south carolina combined. >> this is massive and the western shift has led officials in georgia to declare a state of emergency there. >> we are seeing a big impact on travel nationwide. thousands of flights cancelled and overnight the charleston airport was shut down. it will not reopen until saturday at the earliest. that brings us to our team.
7:03 am
we're spread out. we'll talk to the mayor of myrtle beach about the last minute preparations and the shift the storm took in her direction. >> first to al. he has new information on what we can expect. >> thank you. you can see right now here you go. the outer rain bands now just hitting the outer banks and category 2 hurricane. do not pay attention to the category. that's not the important thing. the important thing is when it comes on shore, the storm surge and the rain. it's 205 east, southeast of wilmington, north carolina. it's moving northwest at 15 miles per hour. we have two different kinds of tracks. we have the national hurricane center track which brings it just offshore tomorrow morning, 2:00 a.m., 105 miles per hour winds. northeast the strongest. it comes on shore, comes across wilmington and makes its say into south carolina continuing saturday into sunday and then by monday morning it's just a local pressure system in parts of
7:04 am
eastern tennessee. the difference now between that and the european model. this would be the worst case scenario. it comes right offshore, makes land fall early friday morning around wilmington, and then comes inland for just a little bit and now continues along the coast. from wilmington, myrtle beach down to charleston they get the northeast quadrant and the storm surge. what happens after that we would need to know. these are the impacts. tropical and hurricane force winds along the north carolina coast. these are the power outages possible. 70% to myrtle beach. 50% to 70% moving inland. the storm surge, this is where 50% of people lose their lives. with surges of 9 to 13 feet,
7:05 am
tonight around midnight is the one high tide. tomorrow we'll look at high tides around midday, around noontime that will wall that water coming on top and then there's the flooding. look at this. first, there's the area, the storm surge from cape fear to cape lookout. that's the most dangerous spot. rainfall, we could be looking at 40 inches of rain between myrtle beach up into wilmington and just south of cape hatteras. coastal flooding, unprecedented amounts. let's go to dylan dreyer in north carolina right now. and dylan, wrightsville beach, what's going on right now? are you seeing any increase in winds or rain yet in. >> reporter: well, the wind is starting to pick up, but we can't even get to the beach. this is the base of the bridge to wrightsville beach. it's closed as are most if not all the barrier islands of north carolina, because they really need to get people out of that area because of the flooding you were just talking about. winds are increasing. let's get to the time line as we
7:06 am
go forward into the next 48 hours. we are going to see the tropical storm force winds move in through the morning. those are winds above 39 miles per hour. by this afternoon the outer bands of hurricane florence will make their way on shore. that's the torrential downpour that we're expecting and that is going to last through the weekend which will cause perhaps up to 40 inches of rain in some areas. tonight we have that first high tide just after 11:00 p.m. as the storm gets closer, we could start to feel the initial effects of that storm surge. then friday morning we have the land fall perhaps around 6:00 a.m. just after that another high tide around 11:00 30. friday, torrential rains, high storm surge and hurricane force winds will be battering this area all day long on friday and then after that, as you know, it's all about the rain as this thing rains itself out. and that could lead to even more fresh water flooding in addition
7:07 am
to the coastal flooding out of this one. >> thank you so much from wrightsville beach. stay safe. people are waking up saying it's a category 2, like that's not going to be a problem anymore. but that is not the case. >> al went on -- >> i'm sorry. i'm sorry. i didn't know you guys were talking. >> we were talking act this earlier. >> yes. >> the point is folks can't just pay attention to the category. the good news is we won't see the structural damage that we would see from that storm if it was a three or a four. however, you're going to get the storm surge and the heavy rain, and as you had pointed out, hoda, earlier, katrina was a three, and look at what happened. people thought everything was great and then the fresh water flooding and the collapses of the dikes. that was the problem. we still have to wait and see what happens with this. >> hoda has covered a lot of hurricanes in her day as well. thank you, al. millions have heed the
7:08 am
warning to get out of the way. let's go to craig melvin. what do you see? >> reporter: i can tell you it's starting to feel like there's potentially a catastrophic storm approaching. i want to show you the waves. this is the cape fear river al was talking about. the waves chappier than this time yesterday morning. the clouds starting to roll in, and you can probably hear it. the wind. those winds that are expected to pick up over the next few hours. those winds have started. this is a storm that's not just going to slam the eastern seaboard. it's a storm that's going to stick around for a while. in just a few hours hurricane florence is expected to wallop the east coast. nearly 2 million people heeding urgent warnings to get out of harm's way. >> this is a mandatory evacuation. >> reporter: the streets deserted in myrtle beach, south carolina. the normally bustling area a ghost town. >> you got to get away from
7:09 am
what's coming. we know it's going to be bad and we know we'll have flooding after. >> reporter: but some still remain. >> i've talked to a lot of people that have been here for a lot of years. they're staying and riding it out. >> reporter: shelters here filled with those who can't or don't want to leave. for some, it comes down to money. >> i'm not crazy about hotels. it costs me a lot of money, and i don't know how long i'll be in there. >> reporter: edward is on oxygen and wanted to stay near his home. his daughter is staying too. >> i tried to convince him to leave. they said nope, we want to go to the shelter. even though i don't want to come here during the hurricane, i want to make sure my parents are okay. >> reporter: folks you've talked to over the past few days, how worried are they about the storm? >> the majority are very worried. >> reporter: up the coast in wrightsville beach, north carolina, daryl mills thankful most of the people there got out. >> life and health is more important than possessions.
7:10 am
>> reporter: in wilmington, the mayor there already looking past the storm. warning evacuated residents to wait until the storm is over and conditions are safe before heading home. >> heed the warnings of the elected folks and the emergency personnel and let us do our job and we'll get this place back together again as quickly as possible. >> reporter: two concerns here primarily. the power outages. i talked to a number of officials yesterday here in wilmington. they are expecting to lose power. they are also expecting that the power is going to be out for some time. so they want to make sure that people who evacuated don't try and come back too soon. something else that continues to strike a lot of folks, these we talked to boat owners yesterday. a lot of people live on those boats. they evacuated. they didn't have enough time to get their boats out and ge to a safer part of north carolina. they have their fingers crossed that their boats are going to be
7:11 am
okay as well. >> craig, thank you so much. we'll check back in. >> we will. the normally bustling city of myrtle beach, south carolina, is a virtual ghost town this morning. we are joined by the mayor this morning. mayor brenda bethune. mayor bethune, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >>le how are you guys preparing differently now that you know the storm is headed directly for you? >> well, we have prepared as much as we can at this point. right now all we can do is pray for the best and hope for the worst, and i truly believe our entire crew has worked hard together to make sure our city is prepared. >> i mean, how do you prepare? we're talking about storm surges could be 13 feet. it's like you know that this punch is coming right towards you, how do you get ready? >> the best way we can. our public safety crews have
7:12 am
been out making sure that businesses are secured. they've been looking for anything that could potentially become a projectile during the winds. and just making sure that people have evacuated. and that is really the most important message about this storm, is for people to leave town. >> a lot of people either can't or decide not to leave town for whatever reason. what would your message to them be this morning? >> if anyone is left, they need to stay inside during the storm. a lot of times people think they want to get out and take pictures, and it just is not safe to be outside during a hurricane under any conditions. so i encourage people to stay inside, especially since our emergency crews will not be able to get to anyone if they do need help. >> all right.
7:13 am
>> in mert butterle beach, may brenda bethune. thank you so much. we wish you good luck in the next few days. we are going to have a lot more on florence just ahead including the impact on travel nationwide. >> we also have breaking news from overnight. a shooting rampage in bakersfield, california. five people killed and the gunman took his own life. steve patterson joins us with the latest. steve, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, that killing spree started at a truckyard nearby. five victims shot in multiple locations with police now searching for a reason why. suspect hispanic male wearing a cowboy hat, a tan shirt and dark pacts. in possession of a large chrome barrel handgun. >> reporter: authorities say the shooting spree began at a trucking business. the suspected gunman brought his wife to the location before he killed a man before shooting his own wife. authorities say the suspect then confronted another man at the shop. >> and then chases him around the building to in front of bear mountain sports where he shoots him and ultimately he dies.
7:14 am
>> suspect fled in a white nissan maxima. >> reporter: driving to a nearby home, police say the gunman killed two more people. >> saw him pretty much saying if you don't get out of the way you're going to be involved too. that's when it happened. >> reporter: authorities say the shooter carjacked the woman with a young child and released them unharmed. after a pursuit, the deputies caught up with him. >> the deputy confronted him with a firearm and the suspect killed himself. >> reporter: no word yet on a motive but investigators are confident all the scenes here are connected. >> all right. steve patterson on the breaking news. thank you. another major story this morning. the pope meeting with american cardinals and bishops at the vatican amid new criticism over his handling of the sex abuse cases here in the u.s. bill neely is at the vatican. bill, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. this is a critical meeting for the u.s. church, but for the pope, too.
7:15 am
he is facing a great deal of pressure. the greatest challenge of his papacy, including recent calls for him to resign. his response to this meeting will be a big test of an abuse scandal that is still growing. behind the closed doors of the vatican, a u.s. delegation led by cardinal daniel denardo of texas want answers and action from pope francis. over the pennsylvania report, detailing decades of sex abuse by priests. and over this man, cardinal theodore mccarrick, who rose as archbishop of washington despite allegations of sexual misconduct. the pope saying abuse is a horrendous crime. >> because of that the pope realizes the credibility of the church depends on rooting it out. >> reporter: u.s. bishops say allegations that the pope helped cover up abuse deserve an answer. >> i think many catholics, many faithful in the u.s. and beyond are looking for some answers.
7:16 am
it doesn't necessarily have to come from the pope's mouth. >> reporter: and soon cardinal donald wuerl of washington will meet the pope to discuss his resignation. the pope now calling on bishops around the world to meet in rome in february for an unprecedented summit on sexual abuse. >> it's a question of utmost importance, not only in countries where it's exploded but all around the globe. >> reporter: the crisis is global and growing. a church report from germany details decades of sexual abuse by more than 1600 priests of thousands of children. and a massive coverup. one of the pope's top aides said this week it all amounts to the church's 9/11. >> bill, i think people are looking for results and action. but what should we expect from today's meeting? >> reporter: well, that's interesting, hoda.
7:17 am
i mean, no big decisions. no big announcements. this meeting is no more than an hour. that won't satisfy everyone, but abuse survivors in the u.s. and in ireland are welcoming it. but as you say, they want action, not just talk. the pope clearly under pressure, even suggesting this week that the devil was behind some of the allegations against him. hoda, savannah. >> all right. bill neely at the vatican. bill, thanks. bill, thanks. we turn now to al. you're the man of the hour. >> that's right, and the rest of the country dealing with other weather to. out west, high fire danger because of the low humidity and the high temperatures. rain in the pacific northwest. flood watches in texas. those are exacerbated by a trop this flu season, protect yourself... and your sister-in-law's... tennis partner's... chatty coworker's... youngest daughter's... entire judo class. one shot can make a world of difference.
