francisco here is a live look outside -- good saturday morning. it is a live look for you outside in san francisco. some clouds there but pretty lovely as you look at the transamerica pyramid. you can even see the golden gate bridge. wow. i'm kira klapper. vianey arana has a look at our microclimate forecast. >> and you probably noticed outside it looks like its a little cool, it kind of is. we're in the 50s and we are expecting to keep these slightly cooler temperatures still on tap

for this weekend. if you've been enjoying these 70s there's plenty more where that came from. dublin is one of those interior valleys that gets warmer. we are expecting some low 80s for some interior valleys but for the most part 70s will be dominating as we head into your saturday forecast. san jose 55 degrees, winds at about 5 miles per hour. another thing you'll notice especially along the coastline and peninsula will be breezy conditions. the temperatures will remain in the 60s. this cooling trend is expected to linger and stick around with mostly clear skies into the afternoon and then just looking far out ahead we are tracking a bit of a warmup once again with the cooling trend. i'll have an update on your day time highs and the coolest and an update on florence in about 15 minutes. >> a lot going on. thank you. vianey as she just mentioned, florence is still

dangerous. rescues are under way after the hurricane wore to shore yesterday along the carolina coast. she's been downgraded to a tropical storm and is expected to do damage as it hovers over the area for several days. it'll be a very long weekend. towns are flooded. the storm is moving into south carolina now. these pictures are along the north carolina coast. that's where the cape fear river has overrun its banks pushing water into the downtown area. more rain is expected over the next couple of days and officials warn that could push the river even higher. cleanup crews are at work in fayetteville, north carolina, where the storm knocked out power to more than 1 million people n. that city alone about 10,000 people are in the dark still and at least 600 people are in shelters. the slow moving storm could dump up to 3 1/2 feet of rain in some spots. >> it was horrifying, just wondering what's going on and where the water's going to go

and how high its going to go and how are we going to get out. >> hundreds of people have been rescued. many families are taking shelters on their second floors. at least five people have died including a woman and her baby when a tree fell on their home. firefighters from oakland, fremont and santa rosa to name a few are all there to deal with damage done by florence. they sent us these pictures from north carolina. the bay area crews are helping to save people. be sure to stay with us for the very latest. our team is constantly posting updates to facebook and twitter. be sure to follow us at nbc bay area news. a woman was pinned under a vta train last night. it happened around 9:30 near downtown san jose. a southbound train hit the pedestrian near first and

jackson streets. first responders were able to free her and rush her to the hospital. she was conscious at that time. the extent of her injuries is unknown. september, by the way, is california rail safety month. we now know the identity of the man who's body was found near a hiking trail in alameda county. authorities say 26-year-old max lopez of fremont was found dead in niles canyons. we've reported the body was found last sunday and police are now saying he was indeed killed. sheriff's deputies say two hikers found the 26-year-old's body near the railroad tracks adjacent to niles canyon road. this is about a mile east of pala morris road. detectives aren't saying how he was killed, but they do say it will help their investigation now that they know his identity. his brother spoke to us about his brother's death. >> even if they get justice, it won't take this pain, this loss,

that we have. >> lopez worked at a bakery here in the bay area. his own dream was to own his business. if you have any information on his death, contact the alameda sheriff's office. a fiery scene on 280 yesterday. this was the story we brought you as breaking news during our 6:00 p.m. newscast. take a look at this video posted on snapchat. it shows the scene on 280 northbound right on the border of san bruno and south san francisco. police now say everyone on board the bus made it off safely and no injuries. at least four lanes of 280 were closed for at least two hours while the scene was cleared. a fast moving fire last night destroyed two businesses in modesto. investigators say it started in the building that houses a battery and a tire store, both buildings were gutted. now to a mysterious letter raising questions about a sexual

misconduct allegation against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. it has ties to the bay area. a local woman wrote the letter in july and sent it to peninsula congresswoman and the information eventually was printsed in the "the new yorker." an article in yesterday's "the new yorker" says a bay area resident wrote the letter accusing him of sexual abuse back when they were high school students in maryland 30 years ago. she claims kavanaugh cornered her in a bedroom during a house party, covered her mouth and tried to force himself on her. it made its way to dianne feinstein, she has now turned over the letter to the fbi. republicans are saying the letter and the timing of the story are low and desperate attempts to derail kavanaugh's supreme court confirmation. senator feinstein says she initially held the letter because the woman requested confidentiality. >> she's been extraordinarily

cautious as she should be because we just don't know what's out here. the contents, whether -- >> the fbi says the letter has been included in kavanaugh's file, but it is not actively investigating that claim. the congressional committee is set to vote on his nomination this coming thursday. new details now, fire officials say 20 fires have been set intentionally across the city. 80s follow-up on an arson case. investigators say the targets are wide ranging but the most recent spree involves cars. that includes a car fire on thursday night. the fire spread to a nearby apartment nearly killing a woman and her 8-year-old granddaughter. investigators are asking people to check their home surveillance footage for any possible leads. a showdown over safety at san francisco's millennium tower now appears to be ending quietly. the luxury residential building

avoided being yellow tagged in the nick of time thanks to safety work completed yesterday. workers spent the day leaning out of a window on the 36th floor to fix a cracked window on the tilting and sinking tower. experts suggest the window may have cracked because the 58 story high rise is tilting. in addition to fixing the cracked window, workers added scaffolding down on the street level below to protect pedestrians on mission street. san francisco building inspectors threatened to yellow tag the tower if safety precautions weren't all done by yesterday. it is 7:08 right now. we have much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, the governor's climate summit closing out in style thanks to famous music legends. we'll take you inside the afterparty in san francisco. plus check your water bill, the mistake that could millions of dollars in refunds for customers. san francisco from e

joined together pledging to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. the governor announced his plan to monitor the climate if president trump chooses not to. >> so we're going to launch our own satellite, our own damn satellite to figure out where the pollution is and how we're going to end it. >> reporter: brown's passion is music to concert goers ears who say they want even more. >> brown is doing a lot of good things and he's doing things that have activists pushing him further and that's the right thing. >> reporter: many say its up to voters to keep leaders focused and accountable. >> the people just need to move it, move it forward so i think these kinds of gatherings both around art and also substantive discussions are really important. >> reporter: pathway to paris organizers aren't just putting on a good show, they're asking 1,000 cities to pledge to use only renewable energy by 2040.

welcome back. its 7:15 on your saturday morning. not as sunny as we typically see in san jose at this time of morning, but vianey arana says there will be sunshine for all today. slightly cooler temperatures for any of those looking to take a break from the heat. a follow-up to a story we've been telling you about all week. san jose's hope village and the growing number of homeless living there. the county of santa clara sent a letter to the state yesterday. they want to hold off on removing tents for six months to

organizers can find a way to rent the current site or find another place for those people to live. county officials are even offering to help the city with the cost of moving hope village. a message now for south bay residents. double check your water bills. a local utility company is being accused of double billing customers for decades. the california public utilities commission says the san jose water company failed to prorate bills when a fee increased in the middle of a billing cycle. customers were charged the higher rate for the entire time period. the staffers recommended san jose water credits $4 million to customers from 1987 to 2017. step-by-step, beam by beam the future home of the warriors is taking shape. a topping out ceremony as the final structural beam was placed at the chase center yesterday. as today in the bay's christie smith tells us in a year from now the new arena will be ready

if you notice fog not really a factor this morning. we don't have that marine layer. we've got this upper low that's going to sit over the bay area. that's going to keep our temperatures nice and cool. right now in san jose, 55 degrees, wind speeds at about 5 miles per hour. dublin is about 55. its going to keep our temperatures on the side of cool. we will continue this 70s trend in through the weekend. today's microclimate highs nice and comfortable but it will be a little bit breezier. northwesterly winds coming in at about 15 miles an hour. 77 degrees in san jose. east san jose, 79. in through concord which is typically one of the warmer spots, 75 degrees topping out for our max forecast today and along the oakland area, 73, in through martinez 74. the peninsula, the wind is blowing. please remember to wear a

sweater later in the evening. san francisco into the city topping out into those mid-to-upper 60s by the afternoon. up through the north bay, 75 degrees down through santa rosa, 78. a noticeable temperature change will be making its way in as we head in toward the end of the week. we still have plenty of time to enjoy these 70s for inland areas. let's talk about what we're tracking up ahead. we've got this low pressure system and its kind of sitting off to the north/northwest but that's resulting in cooler, drier air with breezy winds at times into the evening. be mindful of that. if i fast-forward this timeline, if you notice by thursday, we get this ridge of high pressure turning into wednesday and frill and we get the return of possible 80s and 90s. i want to give you a quick update on florence right now. with winds at about 50 miles an hour. the biggest concern is how slow this system is moving.

its only about 2 miles per hour and the concern for that is it once it continues to trek making a turn toward the east coast, the amount of rainfall coming from this storm is going to to bring additional concerns for more flooding in the area. 20 to 30 inches possible of additional rain through the weekend. we're still monitoring for tornado watches and that river to crest now through wednesday. we'll be keeping a close eye on that. san francisco has got 60s on the map and here come the 70s followed by some 80s right into next weekend. so enjoy this nice, mostly clear weekend ahead. kira. >> thanks. 7:21 right now. if you happen to be looking for a way to give back this weekend, we have the perfect opportunity for you. the second annual bay area proud blood drive is today. garvin thomas reports live for us in just a bit. g

. welcome back. after years of telling incredible stories about good people who give back to our community, award-winning journalist garvin thomas is giving back in his own way. today is his second annual bay area proud blood drive in san jose and garvin joins us live this morning. i donated last year and i'm going to see you at 9:15 this morning, garvin, for my appointment. >> thank you so much, kira. i remember you coming out here last year. it was wonderful to see you, see some of my other colleagues. chris sanchez came out as well. this is the second time the second annual blood drive. last year we got 120 people out here to donate and my favorite thing about that, 34 of them were first time donors. i would love to be able to surpass those numbers this year. i want to tell you, this year it is incredibly necessary. don't take my word for it. bradley burton is the director of donor services for the stanford blood centers. they're really the ones who put on this event.

i help with the publicity. they're the professionals. don't worry. i'm not taking your blood. the good folks here are. now, bradley, you're the director of donor services. you know what the blood center needs and i just heard recently that you guys are in a critical state right now. >> yes, sir. we rarely go out and ask for all blood types. we're in a state right now with the summer months coming to a close. our high school and college season coming up, we're actually asking for all blood types to replenish our entire supply for our hospital patients. >> okay. the other thing is, you let people know, you know, its not as scary as they think. one of the other statistics that blew me away, of the eligible donors, just a really tiny number get out to donate and obviously there are people who worried about a lot of things. what do you say to them? its not as time consuming or painful as they think. >> not at all. its just the thought of going in and doing it.

little light breeze out there, 52 degrees in palo alto. live look at san francisco. i do want to give you an update. if you're heading out to san francisco today, right before the game we will be out there with our treat yourself truck. sam brock will be there along with his wife gaby. they got married recently. you probably did, though, you follow them on social media. chris chmura will be out there. on to the afternoon hours, we'll still keep those 60s. plenty of breeze out there so that might make it tough if you're out there for the game. i'll have an update in 15 minutes. >> giants' games are never the warmest spots but worth it to get free treats and see the game. we'll check in soon, thanks. hurricane florence now has been down groided to a tropical storm but its still very dangerous and proving to be deadly. here's what it looks like right

now. the hurricane roared into north carolina yesterday and is now closing in on south carolina. florence is expected to do some major damage as it hovers over the area for days. its not moving very quickly. some areas already have received one foot of rain and entire towns have been flooded. we have pictures from wilmington. this is along the carolina coast. that's where the cape fear river has overrun its banks, pushing water into the downtown area. more rain is expected over the next few days. officials are warning that could push the river even higher. cleanup crews are even working in the mess. this is in fayetteville, north carolina. the storm knocked down power to more than 1 million people there in that city alone. about 10 people are in the dark and at least 600 people in shelters. when all is said and done, the slow moving storm could dump up to 3 1/2 feet of rain. >> it was horrifying. just wondering what's going on and where the water's going to go and how high its going to go

and how we're going to get out? >> hundreds of people have been rescued already by first responders. many families are taking shelter on their second floors. forecasters are predicting these relentless conditions could last well into the coming weeks. firefighters from oakland, fremont and santa rosa among others are all along the coast to help deal with the damage done by florence. they sent us these pictures as they headed into the north carolina. the bay area crews include rescue swimmers and medical specialists all to save people trapped by those dangerous floodwaters. as the storm continues to hammer the carolinas, floodwaters are expected to only rise. be sure to stay with us for the latest. we'll constantly posting updates to facebook and twitter. this morning locally an investigation is under way after a woman was pinned under a vta train. it happened around 9:30 last night near downtown san jose.

a southbound train hit the pedestrian near first and jackson streets. first responders were able to free her and rush her to the hospital. we're told she was conscious at the time. the extent of her injuries is unknown. september, by the way, is california rail safety month. now a one time uber driver who's facing felony charges for molesting several young boys in his care. the sheriff's office arrested 32-year-old angel gutierrez monet. the redwood city man is accused of molesting at least five boys under the age of 14. deputies say a parent who used a child care website to hire him, then introduced him to other families. >> we have five victims so far but we know that there's other people out there that we have yet to talk to who may have had a similar experience. uber tells us they were alerted when he was booked into jail and they deleted him from their system. president trump's nominee to

the u.s. supreme court brett kavanaugh is pushing back against allegations of sexual assault that date back 30 years. the woman making the claim against him has not been identified, but is believed to be a bay area woman living on the peninsula. "today in the bay" has more. >> reporter: kavanaugh issuing a strongly word statement. i did not do this back in high school or at any time. >> i believe its significant. >> reporter: the professor says the timing of this allegation is important. >> when we look at court decisions that come out of the supreme court around women's rights around this issue of abortion, its very contentious, of course its going to have implications on the type of voting decision that he has a say in. we need to really scrutinize that. >> reporter: republicans senator orrin hatch of utah accused democrats of using the letter as

a late hit. according "the new york times," kavanaugh and a high school friend allegedly courted a teenage girl in a bedroom during a high school party. kavanaugh is accused of getting on top of her and putting a hand over her mouth before she freed herself and left the room. fellow democrats are also questioning why senator dianne feinstein held on to the letter for so long including her midterm election challenger. the american people deserved to know dwr why the ranking member waited nearly three months to hand this disqualifying document over to federal authorities. fine stein's office forwarded the letter to fbi this week. the woman refused to speak publicly about the allegation and requested her identity be prote protected. the man who helped lead donald trump to a presidential victory as accepted a plea deal. paul manafort agreed to cooperate with robert mueller's investigation into russia

meddling. he pleaded guilty friday to two federal conspiracy charges. its not clear what information manafort might have for the russia investigation, but the deal means manafort must cooperate with robert mueller's team and testify under oath. manafort still faces up to ten years in prison. he also must give up houses, bank accounts and an insurance policy. the white house says the charges had nothing to do with president trump. san francisco's civic center plaza looks different this morning. a controversial statue has been taken down after a long and bitter battle. crowds gathered at dawn yesterday to watch the removal of this, the early days statue. you might know it. it showed a native american at the feet of a spanish cowboy. many native american activists believed the statue was racist. on wednesday the board of supervisors voted unanimously to

remove that statue. a significant and historic name around the bay area and across california is under scrutiny especially at stanford. two dorms all carry the name sara as in spanish priest who helped create the california mission system. for years there's been a push to change the name with activists arguing that sarah oppressed and abused indigenous people. stanford has approved the first name change request. it will now be named after the university's cofounder jane stanford. still ahead, the giants finally break out of their record setting funk. how they avoided their 12th loss in a row?

they lost 11 games in a row, but this time they had a little nbc bay area magic, they snapped their historic losing streak at at&t park. apparently that fan thought the game was quite the honor. it was orange friday right here on nbc bay area. his first career complete game shutout. the giants beat the first place rockies 2-0. the a's in tampa taking on their closest competitor in the wild card race. this game was tied at one when chris davis hits a home run, a solo shot to give the a's a 2-1 victory. they continue to crews toward a playoff spot. training camp started for the sharks yesterday and all of the talk was about the blockbuster trade a day after acquiring eric carlson. players embraced the fact that the sharks are a serious stanley cup contender. >> it makes this team look more dangerous and more real but that

it is 7:45 on this saturday morning and this is what it looks like outside right now in san francisco. we've got our nice live shot. you can see not a lot of fog,

mostly clear skies, just a couple clouds here and there and we do have this system centered over the bay area just off to the north. that's going to keep our temperatures nice and cool. temperatures are nice and crisp in the 50s. 52 degrees in palo alto. 59 for hayward and down through san jose, 55 degrees in through oakland, 57. if you notice the trend, we haven't really seen major differences in terms of our morning temperatures but as we head into the afternoon, our temperatures will warm up but its not hot out there. its very comfortable. san jose topping out at about 77 degrees. east san jose 79. morgan hill, 78 degrees. even in through the interior valleys, which is typically some of the warmest spots around the bay area, we're only going to be topping out into those upper 70s. we might see some low 80s further inland near antioch but temperatures are expected to stick to the 70s even throw oakland. breezier conditions expected.

69 degrees in through the city. if you'll be anywhere near the city tonight expect for those winds to really pick up. gusting at times into the evening hours so in addition to the cool temperatures, pair that up with windy conditions and its always chilly. ukiah 75 degrees, santa rosa 78 degrees. i want to talk about the warming expected for the next couple of days when its going to come, let's talk about right now. current conditions right now, we've got this bit of low pressure just off to the northwest, and that's going to keep us cool, dry and breezy at times in through monday and tuesday and wednesday. fast-forward this time line through thursday and friday, you can see we've got this ridge of high pressure approaching and that's going to trend us a lot warmer. we're talking a warmup possibly into the 90s. even though we might be ending our official day of summer on the 22nd, those temperatures are going to linger around.

heartwarming stories about people giving back to our . welcome back. after years of telling heart-warming stories about people giving back to our communities, award-winning journalist garvin thomas is now giving back himself. today is his second annual bay area proud blood drive. it's happening in san jose and garvin joins us now to share how we can all get involved.

hey, garvin. >> reporter: hey, looking forward to seeing you later this morning once you're done on the anchor desk. we're at the princeton plaza mall in san jose. the closest intersections if you're familiar with the area are meridian and coozer. blood drives opens at 9:00 a.m. this morning, runs all the way to 3:00 p.m. you can go online and make an appointment or you can walk up and say hi or walk up and making a donations we're accepting those as well. donations under desperate need right now. i have bradley burton, the director of donor services. these are the good folks that do all the hard work. no one's putting me near a needle at all. bradley, we're in a particularly tight spot right now as far as blood donations. where do things stand? >> we're calling for all blood types. we're critical for all of them. we need about 1,200 units every week to sustain the operation to source them to our local patients here in the community.

>> reporter: last year in our first blood drive we ended having 34 first time donors. for someone sitting at home and has never donated and they can't. >> anyone can come and donate. we'll screen you 38% of the population is able to donate. 10% come in and do. that's where we find ourselves in these crunches and ask for critical messaging. its a scary thing to think about needles. this is a different experience. we have great trained staff here and we're looking forward to having you come out and donate. >> reporter: i said stanford blood center they do the heavy lifting. this is a big year for you, guys. >> its our 40 year anniversary. so next month will be in the south bay. >> reporter: thank you very much. thank you for helping us put this on. again, we're at the princeton plaza mall. that's in san jose. the blood drive runs from 9:00 to 3:00. if you go to nbcbayarea.com or

. welcome back. it is 7:56. time for our clear the shelters segment featuring our friends from pets in need. for viewers who have been following, jessica came here, what was that three weeks ago -- >> yeah. >> she looks like a totally different dog. the cone is fabulous. we know its leading to better healing and better things. so if you can update me on what happened with jessica for those who don't know. >> on monday she had a procedure where they removed the head of the femur so that ball-and-socket joint and that's it really and after the rehab is really important because they want to build up the muscles around where the joint is no longer -- >> for people who don't know, you take in all sorts of dogs

and whatever shape they're in you are committed to taking care of them and getting them into forever homes. jessica has some sort of cancer or an issue in her hip that was blocking the blood flow for her leg. >> yeah. >> you had to get that out of the way. >> it was deteriorating and it was painful. >> so you got that all done, out of the way and she looks to be healing well. we'll she be ready for adoption soon. >> yeah. there's a lot of rehab required post operatively with extension and flexion and walking. once we make sure that they are using it, we'll put her up for adoption. >> and she's just a sweetheart. you had two other dogs. one other one that came in last weekend zen who had a similar issue where he was taken in by you and needed surgery as well and he just had surgery too. >> yeah, he had his thursday. >> and its all thanks to your second chance fund. >> yes. >> where generous people donate

and help rehab -- pay for the rehappen and pay for the surgeries and how much are you looking at right now? >> we had jessica and janelle who's another dog that needed surgery. we had three this week and then we had zen, so between the three of those guys its cost us about $8,000 so far just for their surgeries and jessica and janelle will need pretty extensive rehab after their surgeries, so that's going to be around -- anywhere between 8,010,000 total so that's what we're trying to raise to under write the cost of their surgeries. >> we'll sends people to your website if they want to check out the second chance fund. thanks so much for joining us. and thanks to you for making us apart of your morning. garvin thomas's bay area proud blood drive is from 9:00 a.m. to
