>> great being with you. i'm frances rivera. tropical depression florence is continuing to soak the carolinas in punishing rains. now dangerous rising floodwaters are the latest major safety concern. rescuers have already plucked hundreds of people from their waterlogged homes and the storm has been blamed for at least 17 deaths. >> in wilmington, north carolina, flooding has left the city essentially inaccessible after drowning out portions of highways, according to officials, and it's not over yet. the national hurricane center warns that flash flooding and major river fin continue over a significant portion of the carolinas. nbc's wendy woolfork joins us live from wilmington, north carolina, with the latest. wendy, good morning. >> reporter: marlie, good morning to you. driving through parts of wilmington and other communities in this area is like driving through a maze. beautiful, old trees just knocked down like twigs when florence came roaring through this area, but it's not the wind damage that's causing the most concern now.

three days later, florence will not loosen her grip on the carolinas. >> we've got water coming up further than it ever does in a normal storm. >> reporter: her relentless rain, almost 2 1/2 feet in some places, causing dangerous flooding. >> when we opened the door, that's when we saw all of the water. we were like, oh, my god! and it's like, you know, just water everywhere. >> reporter: water swallowing homes and communities. >> just evacuating people that can't get out by any other means than boat. >> reporter: heroes helping those escape swollen rivers, whose water has nowhere else to go. >> this storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now. >> reporter: sadly, in gaston county, a rain-soaked tree fell on a mobile home, killing a 3-month-old infant inside. >> if you live close to trees, go out, and you know, inspect your property. if you feel like a tree is going to fall, move to some location that's safer.

a local community college. he died, despite attempts to revive him. he would a boogie board when the attack happened about 30 yards offshore. texas public school could soon drop figures like hillary clinton and helen keller from their curriculum. according to "the dallas morning news," the state board of education voted to remove certain figures in order to streamline the course. they said it was not real learning. a volunteer work group found removing clinton and keller would save 30 to 40 minutes of teaching time each. however, dropping the figures doesn't mean they can't be taught. they just wouldn't be required. a final vote is scheduled for november. this morning the state of mississippi is reacting to the controversy surrounding the nfl and nike's new just do it ad campaign. mississippi state police agencies saying it will no longer buy nike products. according to the "associated press," marshall fisher told

reporters he will not use vendors who do not support law enforcement and our military. it's the latest in widespread fallout after nike's decision to use 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick in their ads. mississippi's republican governor has expressed support for his appointee's decision. nike shares fell right after the kaepernick ads were unveiled, but nike has recovered those losses and moved higher. for the first time in over three decades, paul mccartney is on top. his new album "egypt station" debuted at number one on the billboard 200 chart. the album moved 153,000 units, which includes 147,000 traditional album sales, according to billboard. and while it's the eighth time mccartney has had a number one album, this is his first to debut on top. the last time mccartney's name was in that number one slot, his 1982 album "tug-of-war." all right, let's get a check of our weather now and turn to nbc meteorologist bill karins. i'm really hoping the carolinas can get a break here soon. >> it startedniago from this st

still raining in some spots. we still have flash flood warnings all the way from south carolina through north carolina, up into the mountains of virginia now. and now, because the storm's heading north, we have flash flood watches up through washington, d.c., and then through new england, so still have two more days of this mess. and we still have a couple areas of heavy rain in the eastern north carolina. this will be the end of it today, then we'll watch the mountainous areas get in the worst of it this afternoon and this evening. so, any time you get heavy rain in the mountains, it could be a problem, including the appalachians through central pennsylvania. then we'll try to bring some of those issues into new england come tomorrow. rainfall totals, we're just about done. i mean, we've almost hit 36 inches in swansboro, north carolina. that was the highest rainfall total. maybe another inch, and then we'll bring the heavy rain tonight into tomorrow into areas of the northeast. locally 4 to 6 inches could cause some problems there also. the rest of the country actually looks pretty good for any travel concerns. middle of the country looks good and no problems o the westn
