>> and i'm marlie hall. this morning calls from both sides of the aisle to delay a committee vote for supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. this after the woman who accused kavanaugh of sexual misconduct came forward in the "washington post." christine blasey ford tells the paper during a high school party kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her, and tried to remove her clothes. when she tried to scream, he put his hand over her mouth. >> immediately after the report leading democrats called for this week's vote to be postponed, including senators chuck schumer and dianne feinstein, who first referred the once anonymous complaint to federal investigators last week. republican senators bob corkehe calls, saying they'd like to hear more from ford. and independent senator angus king called any gop deadlines for v arbitrary. >> what's the rush? the seat that merrick garland should have been considered for was held open by these same

people for 14 months. and in fact some of them said if a democrat gets elected president we'll hold the seat open for four years. so suddenly there's this arbitrary deadline of the end of september which frankly doesn't relate to anything in particular. so why not slow down? >> still some lawmakers are questioning the timing of the report. for more let's go to nbc's tracie potts in washington. tracie, there is that list, especially from the democrats, calling for them to delay. >> exactly. and democrats, frances, knew about this back in july when that anonymous letter, then anonymous letter came in. they said that the accuser did not want to come forward at that of course has been identified by the "washington post." still, qte skeptical why nothing, nothing about this came out during the confirmation hearing. >> i'm shocked that the matter didn't come up in the nearly 32 hours of testimony that judge kavanaugh was before us in the open session or the nearly hour,

hour and a half session that we had in a closed session. if this was material to the confirmation process, why on earth over the past four to six weeks hasn't it been discussed among the committee members? >> now, kavanaugh has categorically and unequivocally denied any of these allegations of groping ford when he was a teenager back in the '80s. that is her allegation. the white house reissuing that denial over the weekend and standing behind kavanaugh as well. but keep in mind as you noted, there are at least two republicans who now say let's slow this down, let's bring her in to tell her story. they don't want to vote until they hear the other side. frances? >> all right. tracie potts for us. traycie, thank you. dangerous rising floodwaters continue to be a major safety concern as tropical depression florence drenches the carolinas. rescuers have already plucked hundreds of people from their waterlogged homes, and the storm has been blamed for at least 16

deaths. >> we are working now and doing everything we can to prevent more deaths. swift water rescues are going on right now. more than 900 lives have been saved by first responders. >> in wilmington, north carolina flooding has left the city essentially inaccessible after drowning out portions of highways according to officials. and it's not over yet. the national hurricane center warns that flash flooding and major river flooding will continue overn of the carolinas. the center also says parts of western north carolina could receive an additional five to ten inches of rain with possible total storm rainfall of over three feet in the southeastern part of the state. nbc's jay gray has the latest. >> reporter: the winds may have eased a bit. but the rain has not. as the attack from florence continues. >> this storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now. >> reporter: more than a dozen have died in the storm.

the latest victim a 3-month-old, killed when a tree fell on his home. >> my heart is broken. >> reporter: close to a million are without power. in some areas there's already more than 2 1/2 feet of water rushing into homes and businesses with more on the way. and this is a firsthand look at the damage here in wilmington. you can see this giant oak tree pulled from the ground, thrown across the street. it's pulled down power lines. it's crushed a car here. this is the kind of scene playing out across the carolinas right now. high water rescues continue. some pulled to safety by coast guard choppers. others scooped from the rising waters by boat. >> the water started coming in the house. so we went up to the attic and we stayed there for a little while. >> reporter: and like so many here, for a way out. jay gray, nbc news, wilmington, north carolina. as florence continues to hammer the carolinas, president

trump tweets that fema first responders and law enforcement are all working very hard. this comes just after the president spent last week casting doubt on the newly updated and officially accepted death toll numbers in puerto rico following hurricane maria last year. now, fema administrator brock long seems to be echoing president trump's criticism of the findings from the independent study while promisingre the agency will be there to help when rebuilding begins. nbc's jennifer johnson tells us more. >> reporter: as rising waters continue to flood the carolinas, the federal emergency management agency's focus now is on search and rescue, and fema is promising to help victims of florence rebuild their lives. >> we're meeting their demands as they're coming up to us. we'll get through this. it will be ugly but we'll get through it. recovery is always a very frustrating process for people when they've lost their livelihood. >> reporter: north carolina's lawmakers say the state is still recovering from hurricane

matthew two years ago. and now this. >> i think that it's fair to say in terms of economic impact, rebuilding that we are talking in the billions of dollars. >> reporter: president trump sunday praised fema's response to florence tweeting "as the storm begins to finally recede they will kick into an even higher gear. very professional." this as brock long defended the president's controversial tweets last week about puerto rico's death toll from hurricane maria. the puerto rican government in one study claimed close to 3,000 hurricane-related deaths. president trump said it was more like 18 and claimed democrats inflated the number to make him look bad. >> it's frustrating. those studies, the harvard study was done differently than the george washington study or this study or that study. and the numbers are all over the place. >> reporter: long says fema is now one of puerto rico's largest employers, helping that island rebuild. jennifer johnson, nbc news, washington. new tariffs on chinese goods could reportedly be announced by president trump as soon as today. that's according to reuters.

the tariffs would affect $200 billion in chinese imports, threatening to escalate the tit for tat responses from china. the "wall street journal" reports the tariffs would come as u.s. and chinese officials negotiate talks over the tense trade war. but officials tell the journal, "china is not going to negotiate with a gun pointed to its head." the white house declined to comment on any tariff discussions. all right. it was a big second week for the nfl including one of the most bizarre exits for a player that we've ever seen. before we get to that we kick things off with sunday night football as seen right here on nbc. giants visiting the dallas cowboys and right from the opening drive the cowboys took command starting with this dak prescott strike to tavon austin for a 64-yard touchdown. the giants struggle throughout as big d's defense dominated. final, 20-13 cowboys. jacksonville in a rematch of the afc championship and the jags team that is 0-8 against a tom brady-led patriots team until today. first blake bortles hits dante

female sex workers in the head and assaulted a fifth. ortiz is also being held on counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful restraint. an arrest warrant says the slayings of the three women and one man occurred between september 3rd and early saturday morning. officials believe ortiz also fatally shot two more victims. harvard's hasty pudding theatricals is finally ending 223 years of all-male performances by casting women beginning next year. the organization has chosen six women to perform in its 2019 show, fulfilling a promise made in an earlier semester. women were previously allowed in the organization for behind-the-scenes positions but were not considered for roles. female celebrities such as mila kunis have received backlash as all-male troupe that frequently dresses in drag. >> getting with the times right there. long-time tradition. for the first time in over three decades paul mccartney is

floodwaters are ravaging the region, drowning cities and requiring dozens of rescues. tammie leitner gives us an up close look at the devastation. tammie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, frins frances, i'm out with the national guard, atf and missouri task force one. they've been making rescues all day, pulling people out of there are hes floodwaters. we're now on the main highway, which is completely flooded, as you can see. a giant sinkhole has opened up, about 12 feet wide. it's dozens of towns from the rest of the carolinas. frances, back to you. >> all right, tammie, thank you. a massive typhoon sin hong china sunday after leaving a trail of death and destruction in the philippines. more than 2 million people were evacuated from china's guangdong province before the storm hit. at least four people in china were killed while at least 65 people died in the philippines.

dozens more are still missing after landslides. this morning the countdown is on for opening statements to begin in the trial of former chicago police officer jason van dyke. van dyke faces a first-degree murder charge. aggravated battery and official misconduct in the 2014 killing of 17-year-old laquan mcdonald. the officer shot the teen 16 times as he walked away from officers with a knife in his hand. van dyke has pleaded not guilty. in berlin marathon man got a whole new meaning as a 33-year-old runner from kenya set a new world marathon record. eliud kipchoge ran 26.2 miles ie than the previous record and that's more than a minute faster almost five minutes ahead of the second place finisher in sunday's race. that is fast. >> that is way fast. he is a machine right there that we saw going through that. kudos to him. now it's time for his body to rest. take it slow. >> a much-needed rest, yes.
