we have temperatures from the upper 40s to the mid 50s. here is a look at the numbers now. we are at 57 in oakland. in san jose and palo alto, 54. 45 in santa rosa. if you are headed to the warm springs bart station in fremont we have temperatures in the low 50s. at 10:00 we are at 61 and sunshine. 1:00, we are at 71 degrees. a look at the week's forecast that's about to heat up coming up in a few minutes. may have changes at the bay bridge. >> good changes. looking behind me folks will say, oh, a backup at the bay bridge. what's the big deal? it lightened up in the last ten minutes. we were looking at a smooth flow of traffic. by the way, that was not an impression of any particular person. that was mine if i was not impressed. a rake reported in a roy arouad.

keep that in mind. south bay looking good. no major problems on the roads. smooth drive to caster valley. one issue is single tracks reaching old ironsides toward sunnyvale there is an issue with the overhead power lines. they are keeping trains on one track. >> new this morning a new response from the bay area woman accusing supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh of sexual assault. >> now she's telling the world her name. chris sanchez is following the story for us. >> reporter: we tried to talk with the woman at her home, but a friend says she and her family won't be home for a while. she's at the epicenter of a huge story. christine ford is a research psychologist but in high school found herself at a maryland house party with brett kavanaugh. she claims he was stumbling

drunk when he pinned her to a bed and groped her. she said he was trying to attack me and remove my clothing. he covered her mouth to quiet her to which she said she thought he might kill her. ford gave the account to the washington post in the last few days. her lawyer had this to add to the description. >> she clearly considers this attempted rape. she believes if it were not for the severe intoxication of brett kavanaugh she would have been raped. >> brett kavanaugh denied the allegation. now at least two republican senators say they don't know enough to vote at this moment. >> senator dianne feinstein tweeted i agree with senator flake we should delay the vote on brett kavanaugh. there is a lot of information we don't know and the fbi should have the time it needs to review the new material. staff calls aren't the appropriate way to handle this.

the white house continues to stand behind kavanaugh who denies the allegations. the white house is pushing for the confirmation vote within two weeks in time for the start of the next supreme court session. we'll be watching this one. >> most definitely as it develops. thanks, chris. 6:03 now. florence was a hurricane and is now a tropical depression. still drenching the carolinas, dumping feet of rain in some places. it knocked out power as well to at least a million people. >> the storm is responsible for the deaths of at least 17. many are still facing grave danger. here's the latest from wilmington, north carolina. >> reporter: three days later, florence will not loosen her grip on the carolinas. >> see the water coming up further than it does in a normal storm. >> reporter: her relentless rain, almost two and a half feet in some places causing dangerous flooding. >> when you open the door, that's when we saw all of the water like, oh, my god.

it's like, you know, it was just water everywhere. >> reporter: water swallowing homes and communities. >> just evacuating people who can't get out by any other means than boat. >> reporter: heroes helping those escape swollen rivers whose water has nowhere else to go. >> this storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now. >> reporter: sadly in gaston county, a rain-soaked tree fell on a mobile home, killing a 3-month-old infant inside. >> if you live close to trees, go out and inspect your property. if you feel a tree will fall, move to a safer location. >> reporter: a tragic reminder of how dangerous florence is. in wilmington, north carolina, nbc news. >> as we continue to track florence, a big announcement. fema teaming up with the fcc for a nationwide test of wireless emergency alerts. on thursday, all cell phones connected to providers that

participate in emergency alerts will receive a text message with the title presidential alert. this is the first test ever conducted using the national wireless alert system. the agencies will do a test for radio broadcasters a few minutes after the wireless alert. happening today, catholic church sexual abuse survivors from the bay area will head to the state capitol. >> they are calling on california's attorney general to launch a state-wide investigation into the alleged abuse. here's more from san francisco. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you. simply put, the groups want the state attorney general to do something about this issue about the abuse in the catholic church. you will see two dozen victims and supporters going to the state capitol to hold a news conference and protest later this morning. outside of the probe they are also calling on local law

enforcement and prosecutors to be more aggressive when it comes to dealing with these cases. we did get to speak to a member of s.n.a.p., the survivors network of those abused by priests. they tell us the number of priests accused is much higher than what's being reported. they say more needs to be done to expose abusers. >> we want to protect kids. the way is to open up the files and sort out who did what to whom when. you have to publish the names, publish what they did so parents and advocates can look out for the children. >> reporter: last week we had the diocese of san jose launching its own investigation. they'll report the names of accused priests who have credible accusations. as far as today's presser and protest in sacramento it's set to take place at 11:00 a.m. live near the golden gate bridge for "today in the bay."

>> thanks, pete. now to a developing story in the north bay. police asking for help. finding a hit-and-run driver who killed a man. several 911 calls came in about a car that struck a man in the street and drove off. the victim died at the scene. investigators are looking for possible surveillance video to track down the hit-and-run driver. right now all they have is a vague description of the car -- a white, compact sedan. happening today, call trans comes to sunnyvale to discuss an ongoing project. the agency is upgrading to electric replacing the aging fleet of trains. over the past year representatives traveled to each city on the tracks to educate people about what to expect and the possible impact. tonight's meeting in sunnyvale takes place at washington part. >> who is the first mystery moon tourist? we could find out tonight.

the holder of a ticket on spacex's rocket to the moon. they signed the first private passenger to travel into space. but it plans to reveal who it is tonight. people are speculating who that mystery person is. one person naturally asked if it's elon musk, the founder and ceo of spacex. he tweeted a japanese flag hinting the lucky passenger may be from japan. only 24 people have been to the moon, 12 walked on it. nobody's been since the last apollo mission in 1972. all right. right now it's 6:08. we are walking out to temperatures in the mostly mid 50s. a live look outside at san jose. let's go to santa clara. you will need a jacket for the early hours headed to work or school. then we are headed into the mid 70s. it will be nice and comfortable. this is what we had over the weekend. as you make your way out the

door in danville, the school day forecast will be at 51 degrees as you walk to school. then as the kids head outside for recess it will be in the upper 60s. 72 degrees at 1:00 today. here is a look at the highs today. we'll see the high of 75 degrees in napa and also in livermore. palo alto at 72. you have a new crash? >> it is on the fremont side of the dunbarton bridge. as we look, you see the speed sensors are great around the bay. my concern is right there. highway 84. that's a critical crossing from the east bay building now. you see westbound slowing toward the toll plaza. the crash is eastbound, but it is likely visible because it is easy to see both sides of the freeway. you can be distracted by the flashing lights or it's possible the report was for the wrong direction. you will find slowing by the

coming up on 6:13 now. it's going to be a nice monday with temperatures in the upper 50s. headed to 69 degrees. we'll have a look at the microclimates coming up. >> and we'll talk about what's going on at fremont and newark. >> it's 6:13. in business and tech news wall street will open lower. investors might be playing it cautious on reports the trump administration may impose a new round of tariffs today. markets coming off a positive week. dow and nasdaq up in four of the

past five weeks. s&p 500 had its best week since july. data on housing starts and home sales. if the president slaps new tariffs on chinese goods it would reportedly involve 10% tariffs on $200 billion worth of goods and u.s. consumers would likely see higher prices including increases on mishable food imports within days of when tariffs are implemented. other new items include basic houseware and consumer electronics. apple warned this month the tariffs will impact the apple watch, air pods, chargers, all of which are made and imported from china. analysts don't expect prices to be hiked immediately to offset tariffs but prices could rise as you spend money during the holiday shopping season. amazon has launched a new section of the site called amazon store front. it only lists items sold by small and mid sized u.s. businesses. amazon says smaller companies can get lost among the millions of goods. this will allow shoppers to find

them more easily. more than a million products from 20,000 businesses were selected to be featured. >> it is quickly approach 6:15. time to start thinking about the holidays. at least for retailers like target. the company is looking to hire 120,000 workers. most will not be added to the checkout lines. instead it will be to handle a big online surge in the orders. a lot of physicians at target distribution centers. this after online sales jumped 40% over the second quarter. they plan to hold hiring events at stores nationwide four weeks from now. christmas already approaching. >> interesting that macy's has it. >> a whole section of christmas stuff. i couldn't walk over there. >> 45 days away from halloween. >> yeah. really? >> something like that. >> i'm not there yet.

>> i don't even buy my kids' their outfits yet because they change their mind. >> or grow. >> don't forget valentine's day. >> let's work on it. we're just trying to get through monday. here is a look at what we'll see as we head out on this sort of a day. beautiful sunrise. we are starting to see a lot of oranges and pinks in the sky as clouds roll by over dublin. it's already busy. let's head out for a workout this morning in martinez. 56 degrees, a cool start. then you may want to start out in the gym. it won't get more comfortable until later today. right around noon at 69 degrees. later today it will be really nice. we start out in morgan hill. look how cool it is. upper 40s. right around sunrise it will be

48 degrees. then 57 at 9:00. low 70s for the middle of the afternoon. we are headed up to the mid 70s for much of the south bay, downtown san jose. 76 degrees with breezes from the northwest around 15 to 20 miles per hour. that's what will make it feel more comfortable for some spots reaching into the mid 70s. con ford, 76 degrees. 68 in oakland. 62 degrees in half moon bay. in san mateo, 68 degrees there. the mission district at 65. up to 78 for the high today in santa rosa. if you do plan to make it a beach day if you have the day off or you're lucky enough to be close to half moon bay it will be in the upper 50s. we'll see some of the clouds clearing out by early afternoon. then we are up to about 61 degrees at 2:00 today. here is a look at the highs reaching 76 degrees today for the inland valleys.

cooler tomorrow as the brisk on shore flow picks up. high pressure builds making it all clear, sunny and fighting back the ocean breeze. the high temperatures headed into the upper 80s. then coming back into the upper 70s and low 80s for the weekend. for san francisco, expect it to become a little bit more clear and not as cool as we go toward thursday, reaching 72 degrees. then some upper 60s for the end of the week. >> in fremont i'm concerned because of the crash location. also one of the details that comes into the crash looking at the entire commute. zooming in over here. approaching the du in,barton bridge. traffic moving better westbound. eastbound shows slowing just past thornton where there is a crash reportedly blocking one lane now. chp arrived. they called.

when i first came to ocean bay, what i saw was despair. i knew something had to be done. hurricane sandy really woke people up, to showing that we need to invest in this community. i knew having the right partner we could turn this place around. it was only one bank that could finance a project this difficult and this large, and that was citi. preserving affordable housing preserves communities. so we are doing their kitchens and their flooring and their lobbies and the grounds. and the beautification of their homes, giving them pride in where they live, will make this a thriving community once again. ♪

>> perhaps best known for her role in the x-men franchise. the actress hasn't been seen publically since june. the speculation is her disappearance is tied to an alleged tax evasion scandal. she's accused of underreporting her earnings. the scandal comes as the chinese government cuts back on bloated budgets of the state controlled film industry. >> the message that the authorities here want to send is that no one is above the communist party. the government said it doesn't like celebrity worship. what she's doing is running counter a bit. >> so far the chinese government isn't responding to requests about the 36-year-old actress. for years doctors advised older adults to take a baby aspirin to help prevent heart attacks. new evidence shows it may do more harm than good. australian researchers say people over the age of 70 should not take a low dose aspirin daily. they studied thousands of

patients in the u.s. and australia. instead of helping prevent heart attack and cardiovascular disease it is putting them at a higher risk of stomach and brain bleeding. don't take my word for it. talk to your doctor before making changes to your medications. a determined young girl made some major league baseball history. >> here we go, folks. this is live. 8-year-old hailey's 30th first pitch. >> her 30th first pitch you see. she's thrown out the first pitch at all 30 major league baseball stadiums. she did it all with a robotic hand. angels stadium is where 8-year-old hailey dawson finished what she called her journey to 30. she did so beside former angels pitcher jim abbott who had a long career despite being born without a right hand. hailey was born with a an underdeveloped hand.

out cool as you head to school in concord. 73 degrees today at 1:00. getting a look at the high temperatures across the microclimates, napa reaching 70 degrees. 65 in san francisco. expect the highs in the mid 70s to be really pleasant. also breezy today headed into the afternoon. we'll talk about the weekend ahead coming up in about seven minutes. you have issues for commuters in two of the bridges? >> yeah, a critical point for the morning commute. any problem would cause a major reroute. i want to warn folks that the middle two bridges here are the ones we are concerned with. we are looking at the south bay which is a subtle build. 237 moving slower now off 880. not a major surprise. westbound is the commute direction. eastbound, we are seeing slowing and westbound the commute would see slowing as well because of a

distraction in toward the toll plaza. that's west 84. we see more traffic coming down off the freeway headed over there. the crash with debris past thornton to padre and the ardenwood exit. chp has three cruisers still there. unusual activity there. we do have the usual ones through hayward and west to the san mateo bridge. we see icons over there. there was a hit-and-run that looked like everything is clear from the roadway. might be a stalled vehicle off the high rise. that would be an issue for the westbound directions. traffic over the last few minutes started to move. look at the volume. south bay, more sunlight, headlights, no problem. >> hope appears to be running out for people in hope village, the homeless camp in san jose under orders to clear out by 8:00 this morning. >> we have been telling you and

following the story since last week here on "today in the bay." we have more from the homeless encampment. not a lot of time left for folks living there. >> no. just about 90 minutes left. good morning, laura and scott. this homeless encampment is called hope village. it sits on state owned land. chp told us that it must enforce the tno trespassing laws so chp ordered those here to move out by this morning. it is on an empty parking lot on rough drive near heeding located near the old traffic court. two saturdays ago the nonprofit group called san jose cath rick worker established hope village at a cost of around $10,000. the area is fenced off. there are showers, solar. there are ground rules to keep

the site secure. one man told us it is the difference between night and day living in the creek versus here. the cath rick worker organization thinks hope village could be a model for other encampments. they'll consider possible solutions including moving hope village to a property owned by san jose. moving it to city owned land behind the police department parking lot or convincing the state to lace the property at the villages right now. that time is running out. if chp goes through with the plan to order people to vacate the land at 8:00 this morning. reporting live in san jose, bob riddell for "today in the bay." >> thank you. >> it is 6:33 now. florence may be weakening somewhat. people in the carolinas still facing dangerous conditions. >> the storm now responsible for the deaths of at least 17 people. at least a million people remain without power. three days of rain caused

dangerous flooding. rivers led to water flooding homes and communities. >> we opened the door and saw the water. it was just water everywhere. >> the storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now. >> sadly in gaston county rain-soaked tree fell on a mobile home killing a 3-month-old infant inside. the rain in the forecast through tomorrow. the danger is far from over. new this morning, a team of bay area firefighters are right in the middle of an active rescue in the disaster zone in north carolina. our newsroom just got off the phone with chief jason solak who promised details after everyone gets out safe. the u.s. a.r. tax force is made up of 16 firefighters from oakland, almeida county, fremont, almeida city, contra costa fire department. the task force hit the ground

running in the north carolina area where the water was about chest high. it is 6:34. in washington, the bay area woman accusing president trump's supreme court nominee of sexual misconduct goes public detailing an alleged sexual assault involving brett kavanaugh. >> kavanaugh denied the allegations. tracie potts has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: hi. good morning. we know a number of democrats here want to see this confirmation process slowed down, even stopped at this point. now a few republicans say they are not comfortable voting until they hear the allegations and get a chance to hear for themselves. >> judge kavanaugh denies groping a woman at a house party

>> reporter: hundreds of women support kavanaugh, but at least two republicans and others now want to hear from his accuser before they vote. >> she should not be ignored or insulted. she should be heard. >> reporter: parts of her story had already leaked out so she decided to come out. we do know from her attorney this morning she's willing to come here to capitol hill and testify. that's new. and the white house adviser kellyanne conway saying they think she deserves to be heard. former vice president joe biden put out a similar statement saying she deserves a fair hearing. >> we'll continue to watch that. thank you. >> it's 6:37. in massachusetts, thousands were allowed to return home after a gas leak set off dozens of fires. the explosions and fires north of boston last thursday killed an 18-year-old man and injured

25 others. yesterday the all clear was given for residents to come home. investigators are looking at pressure sensors connected to a gas line taken out of service shortly before the blast. catholic church sexual abuse survivors from the bay area head to skramt with a goal in mind. they want california's attorney to conduct a probe similar to the one in pennsylvania. members of s.n.a.p. say the number of priests accused of harming children is higher than currently reported. the group wants law enforcement and state leaders to do more to expose abusers. >> we just want to protect kids. the way to do that is to actually open up the files and sort out who did what to whom and when. to do it you have to publish the names, what they did so that

parents and advocates can look after the children. >> members of s.n.a.p. plan to propest outside the sacramento office this morning. you might recall last week the diocese of san jose said it is launching its own investigation and will report the names of any priest facing what the church calls credible accusations. >> 6:39 on monday morning. we have new details on why a bay area murder suspect may have driven to oregon before turning himself in. according to the east bay times, concord police heard he fled to the small town in oregon to hug his wife one more time. dixon is charged with the murder of michael downy, a 64-year-old concord resident, in late july. investigators say downy was beaten to death with a fire poker. dixon turned himself in to police and is now in a contra costa jail. in a few hours state leaders expect to give a clearer picture on the picture of the angel

island ferry that takes passengers to and from tiberon. they are looking at taking over the service from a family that's been running it for all 59 years. the blue and gold fleet submitted a proposal to take over the ferry service that the family said they will fight to continue ferrying passengers. >> we're going to continue to operate to angel island. we are going to continue to take care of the community just like they have taken care of us. that's who we are. that's what we do. >> the family didn't submit a proposal saying expensive dock repairs were too expensive. a news conference scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in tiberon. >> happening today at stanford, students are set to join doctors, nurses and first responders as part of a nationwide anti-gun protest. it is the first national event for a group called s.a.f.e. or scrubs addressing the firearm

epidemic. hundreds are expected for a noon rally. similar rallies are scheduled for hospitals across the country. to the nfl where things are looking good for the raiders and denver yesterday until they weren't. derek carr threw a late third quarter touchdown to give the silver and black a lead. after that it went downhill. the broncos scoring in the final 13 points including a last-second field goal to pull off the come-back win. john gruden will have to wait another win to get a win since returning to the silver and black. the 49ers jumped out to a big lead against the lions but it got dicey. >> let's look at levi. it was packed during the home opener. yesterday, a different story. quarterback jimmy garoppolo threw for two touchdowns including this one. the niners led 30-13 at one point in the fourth quarter. the lions did storm back coming late, just falling short in the

the forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> the san mateo bridge is now moving much more steadily. it's better than it was before. over here in san jose, 101 moves nicely. i have a crash farther south. >> it is 6:48. amidst the mayhem from florence, fema's top official is supporting president trump's claims about the number of deaths in puerto rico. >> what happens, even in this event, you may see more deaths indirectly occur as time goes on because people have heart attacks due to stress. they fall off their house trying to fix the roof. >> he agrees that the official number of deaths from maria is inflated. according to an independent study, nearly 3,000 people died as a result of the storm. many exactly in the way that long was describing. unexpected deaths after, but resulting from the storm.

last week the president tweeted 3,000 people didn't die. when he left the island there were anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths. >> he said democrats did it to make him look bad. do you believe these studies were done to make the president look bad? >> i don't think the -- i don't know why the studies were done. what we are trying to do in my opinion, we have to figure out why people die from the direct deaths of wind, water and waves. >> fema is one of the largest employers on puerto rico helping to rebuild the territory. >> we are learning details about a texas border patrol agenda charged with murdering four people. this is a mug shot of juan david ortiz, a ten-year veteran supervisor and a navy veteran. according to court documents he admitted to killing four sex workers over the past two weeks and kidnapping a fifth.

the victim was able to help state troopers track him down. investigators don't believe there are more victims and ortiz was acting alone. a middle school student accused of bringing cocaine balloons to school friday in a city south of fresno. at least a dozen students were exposed to the drug. two went to the hospital as a precaution. just yesterday, sheriff deputies searched the home of the 13-year-old student who they say is responsible. no word on the outcome of the search. frightening though. 6:50 and a new world record set by an 11-year-old girl. her mission was to get as many hugs as possible. welcome back on this monday morning. 6:56. here are the top stories we are covering on "today in the bay." >> the bay area woman accused -- accusing supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh of sexual assault decades ago is going public with her name and a commitment to testify before the senate judiciary committee. christine ford is a research psychologist at palo alto university. she claims brett kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, groped her and likely would have done worse if he weren't, quote, stumbling drunk. that's according to her lawyer. >> she clearly considers this an attempted rape. she believes if it were not for the severe intoxication of brett kavanaugh she would have been raped. >> brett kavanaugh denies the allegation. at least two republican senators
