tv   Today in the Bay  NBC  September 18, 2018 6:00am-6:58am PDT

6:00 am
we say continue because we've been on since 4:30. >> is that when we come back? >> we wake up about 5:00 -- no. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. kari has a look at the nice forecast we need to hold onto. >> we need to hold onto, take it in today. tomorrow it starts to get hot across the bay area inland. as we get a look at our temperatures and what to expect this morning, fremont looking good this morning. if you're on your way out to the warm springs station, it's going to be mostly in the mid-50s through about 7:00. we go from the mid-50s to the upper 60s by early afternoon, and then as you make your way out for school this morning, we are going to see san jose temperatures going from 55 and partly cloudy to sunny and 67 by the time that last school bell rings. we'll talk more about the forecast coming up and mike, taking us back to the crash in fremont. >> we have the update, chp arrived and sure enough people get confused on their commute, an overall nonconfusing pattern though.
6:01 am
the confusion issohbound 680, t direction for the crash and that is your commute direction and we see slowing south out of sunol and toward mission north that's where the crash is, if the commute direction on the shoulder a little distraction. more slowing as folks build up headed toward mission south, that's the connector toward 880 what we call the fremont funnel. folks funnel down into the south bay. also getting down southbound 880 toward tennison and right behind the shield and off the shoulder, now a crash recovery for speeds past the san mateo bridge. we're actually looking great for a tuesday. the tri valley not showing much of a problem but the build is your traditional pattern. now the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on, as would be standard here, coming through du580, moving nicely. look at the spacing between the cars and the maze moves as well because of spancisci right now across i-80. we'll check on that coming up. back to you. >> all right, thanks, mike. 6:01. want to get you caught up on
6:02 am
what's happening in:cta county. new for you this morning in contra costa county, robbers there strike a concord shopping center during business hours, making out with thousands of dollars worth of gadgets. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in concord with new video just coming into our newsroom. this is a brazen incident right here. >> reporter: good morning to you. brazen indeed. you heard about the incidents across the bay area specifically at apple stores. this one happening at a t-mobile store in concord. the gates are down right now, but the robbery took place during store hours. this is when concord police were inside the store last night just before 8:00 p.m. when it all took place. we're being told by police three suspects walked into the store during store hours, there were customers inside when this happened and they stole roughly $6,000 worth of electronics. so we're talking about phones and tablets. they're still looking for the suspects and saying they were able to get away in a green
6:03 am
honda sedan. so t-mobile workers that our crew spoke to, this has happened to the store before unfortunately. we got a chance to worker at a metro pcs right around the corner from the store who says he has dealt with the same issue as well. >> we're seeing a lot of smash and grabs. we're seeing the apple stores losing a lot of product, and it is worrisome to have this kind of crime and see not so much prosecution and apprehension of these criminals. >> reporter: those we've seen in the past months have been focused on apple stores. on the map it's across the whole bay area. you got los gatos, emeryville, santa rosa in there, and also nearby walnut creek, not too far from where we're standing here and this surveillanceom teo wal. once again you see there are suspects inhoodies, rng authorities investigating that matter say they may be connected to some of those other incidents
6:04 am
we saw on that map that we just showed you a couple of moments ago. no word if they're connected to this incident in concord. if you have information, to help catch the suspects, call the police. we're live here in concord, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> so aggressive in that video. thank you, pete. national drama playing out over president trump's supreme court nomination is having a huge impact in one silicon valley neighborhood because there's attention outside the home of the bay area woman accusing brett kavanaugh of sexual assault. dr. ford isuniversity. she says kavanaughteenagers. congress about the accusation. she has a lot of bay area supporters. she now agreed to speak to lightly at all, because the stakes could not be higher. sch

testify in congress on monday. kavanaugh is denying all accusations. continuing coverage this morning of a deputy shot and killed in sacramento county. mark stasyuk died in a shoot-out at a pep boys auto store. it happened yesterday afternoon in rancho cordova. two deputies responded to a disturbance call but did not know the suspect was armed. when they arrived, he started shooting. both deputies were hit, as well as a bystander and the suspect. deputy stasyuk the only one who did not survive, was just 27 years old. >> 6:05. now to continuing coverage of florence, as it continues to wreak half rock, and it will likely do so for many days. the number of dead this morning stands at 31, and here's what folks in that region are dealing with there. you can take a look at the massive funnel cloud. this is hovering you see right there over that area in virginia yesterday as remnants of florence moved through that area. someone took video from a plane there as you can see it landing
6:06 am
there and the funnel cloud in distance touching down in richmond, virginia. take a look at this. >> oh my god! >> you see right there that cell phone video capturing that twister shearing off that roof, and you can see that debris flying through the air. tornado was spotted outside of the universe of richmond. people say that they had just minutes to take cover. >> we were looking out the windows and you could literally see it circular motion all the leaves and this stuff, and we knew yeah, we got to get in the closet and that's what we did. >> as for flooding in the carolinas, there's plenty of it and some of those areas are still inaccessible because they're cut off by floodwaters. a new video for you this morning of a team of east bay carolinas there, helping with rescues. this is video from the alpha team, as they are called rescuing two national guardsmen and other people in eight feet of water. they've been busy here.
6:07 am
yesterday they rescued 30 people in six hours including rescuing a woman and her dog there. they are busy doing a great job there helping a lot of people. >> it is 6:07 now. the man convicted in the high-profile kidnapping of a vallejo woman after drugging her and her boyfriend in their home return to court this morning to face state charges. matthew mueller was sentenced to 40 years for kidnapping denise hoskins in 2015. he was convicted on federal charges. yesterday he pleaded not guilty to six state charges that could the case was so bizarre. vallejo police originally called x.attempt. the couple sued the police department and settled for $2.5 million. happening today, you've seen them from the south bay to san francisco. now more bay area cities will get in on the dockless transportation band wagon. in san francisco the talk is
6:08 am
turning to possible expansion of the number of dockless bikes on the streets. right now the company jump offers 250 ebikes in the city but it is aiming to double that, increasing the number to 500. sfmta will take a vote on the potential increase during its board meeting later today. just last night, oakland moved forward with its own plans for scooters. companies are now required to apply for a permit to operate, getting a permit will require, among other things, providing safety information for riders. local maintenance teams to also make s the right-of-way of re and providing discounted >> it is :07. san jose earthquakes need a new coach. the soccer team is set to make a big change in leadership. the head coach was let go
6:09 am
yesterday. the assistant also gone. the team's gm says in part "we felt like we needed a change." assistant coach steve ralson will be the interim head coach. there are still six games left for the quakes this season. no playoffs though. the team is last. in the western conference. >> the quakes are shaking things up, huh? all right. right now it's 6:09. we are feeling a cool start this morning with temperatures, as you step out the door, at 52 degrees in livermore, and in san jose, chilly in morgan hill, only 48 degrees, as we go through that morning commute, our temperatures go from the upper 40s and a few clouds to clear skies, and making it into the upper 60s by 1:00 today. look at all of our microclimates as we enjoy one last day that feels kind of fall-like. cooler than normal weather, with highs reachin iforhe inland valn san francisco. mike, getting outo e east bay, kari.
6:10 am
first i promise folks a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. there it is. no real surprises except for the fact this being a tuesday we're a little surprised to see any spacing in the backup. you see that but the backup continues to build coming out of the maze. no major problems. the metering lights are on. that's why we see that almost every day there, especially on tuesdays. coming through the area, up there, the upper east shore freeway in toward san pablo a lot of slowing toward san pablo avenue. there is a crash which is currently blocking your left two lanes, the fast lane and the second lane. chp should get there soon and move that to the shoulder. zooming out we have a smooth flow through the rest of the bay but a new crash may be in the works at 680 and right around auto mall. i'll double check. it might be a duplicate report. back to you. >> thanks for checking. next, would you be dishonest? thought it abo it's the right thing to do. >> a very valuable find for one northern californiteen, his
6:11 am
response gaining praise this morning. president trump slappeds anew round of tariffs on china and iphones escaped the list. and 6:25, wracking up a huge food delivery tab, but not getting anything to eat. new this morning, the scam our consumer unit helped solve. you're going to want to watch. you're watching "today in the bay."
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
it's 6:14. now let's head over to san jose and get a live look outside, at this beautiful sunrise. we're still about 30 minutes away from sunrise right now. as we check out our temperature trend in willow glen, 55 degrees at 8:00, and normally, we're hitting about 80 degrees, but we're not going to quite make it there today. tomorrow that's a different story. i'll show you the rising temperatures in our forecast coming up in less than five minutes. >> looking at fremont, 880 moves smoothly, and camera also moving a little bit. traffic slows past the truck scales but we are tracking the crashes on 680, getting toward the bay bridge we're tracking the slowdown for the upper esh there. good morning and a very g te u.s. once again set another set of tariffsods, and the chinese
6:15 am
responded. china has told president trump it's not going to participate in any further trade talks, now that he's added that set of tariffs, and seconds ago, china responded with morte tariffs of its own. this is indeed a trade war. president trump spoke to reporters monday saying "china's now paying us billions of dollars in tariffs and hopefully we'll be able to work something out." china is not paying us billions of dollars. you can agree or disagree with president trump's tariff policy, but what he's saying is not how tariffs work. the american importer pays the tariff to the u.s. government. we pay. when an american product goes there, chinese importers pay china. china never pays us the billions he's talking about are american dollars from americans. now, originally apple thought its products would be on that list.
6:16 am
its apple watch and air pod head phones in particular but they were dropped from the list last minute. the iphone is also missing from the list, though we expected that. speaking of iphone, theios 12 is ready for download. just hit settings on your iphone to find the new software. it includes a lot of ways to control yourself and how much time you spend on a certain app. for instance, you could set your phone to not allow you to look at facebook while you're at work. and you heard a japanese artist has been chosen to ride the rocket to the moon. elon musk made that announcement on monday evening. yusako misawa will get to choose six toight other people to ride to the moon with him. he says he's going to bring other artists. the moon mission will go into orbit around on the very same day, musk was slapped with a lawsuit from the british rescue diver. musk twice accused vernon unsworth of pedophilia. this is the latest lawsuit filed in california court. musk called the diver pedo guy a
6:17 am
while back and apologized, and after apologizing musk called unsworth a child rainist without any evidence about this. dared him to sue, which unsworth did. it's worth remembering the same guy who sends a guy to the moon is also making what appear to be completely baseless attacks against a random person so he's a strange one to watch. >> yes, investors certainly. >>re very shaken. >> thank you very much, scott. it is 6:57 right now. new this morning a california teenager who found i right thing. he returned it to the owner. teenager says he noticed a purse last week on a street in santa barbara and after looking inside, he saw that money. instead of pocketing the cash, he returned it to the sheriff's office. >> the way i thought about it, it's the right thing to do, if you find a purse, call the
6:18 am
owner. >> the purse and all the cash has now safely been reunited with the owner and in return, she let him keep $100. >> that's nice. >> it's the right thing to do. >> really is. >> all going to come back. >> reward is nice, too, and i thought you were going to say she let him keep the purse, and i'm like, well, great. >> could have been a $10,000 purse. who knows. >> that's true. look at the weather today, a $10,000 forecast? >> i think it's pretty good today, and then tomorrow we'll be spending a lot more money running the air conditioning. >> got to find that purse. >> you do. here is a live look outside in san francisco from at&t park. now our giants are away today on the road, but we'll take a live look outside toward the embarcadero and you can see things right now, not as much fog, but i think that will change over the next hour or so. that fog will lower, and then we head inland to the dublin b.a.r.t. station, as you try to make your way out the door for work this morning.
6:19 am
it will be 51 degrees. grab a jacket. temperatures go from the low 50s to the low 70s today. it's still going to be a really nice one, and then check out that seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen. our highs today in the south bay still a little bit cooler than normal with gilroy8 degrees, and 75 today in milpitas and for the east bay livermore reaching 73 degrees and 74 in martinez. the peninsula stays cool, only 60 degrees in daly city. san francisco 61 and novato today reaching 75 degrees. we still have the deep marine layer and the fog right there near the coastline and it's making its way inland, as we head toward the east bay i want to give you a quick update on the remnants of florence as it spreads a lot of rain across the east coast as it gets caught up in a cold front swept to the east. lot of rain there now moving all the way up through new england. and as we are looking at the rest of the forecast for the week, you may get a personalized
6:20 am
forecast, just let me know what you're doing, where you're going, if you'l be traveling wi forecast elsewhere, and i'm at at karihallweather on facebook as well as twitter. the inland forecast changes drastically, we go from the mid-70s inland to 85 degrees tomorrow. 92 on thursday, then back down for the weekend. it's hard keeping track of it all so keep checking in. mike, you're seeing more slowing out of the tri valley. >> that's right. using our partners to waze to give you timing although having a problem getting that display to you, so we'll track that on my computer over here. we'll start with the maps. overall looking at a pleasant drive, this is the one problem coming out of the tri valley, southbound, 680, really jamming up toward that crash, where we showed you just a few seconds ago, a few minutes ago in the last report. from mission north all the way down toward mission south it's slow on the southbound direction, that crash reportedly leaves one car in the middle of the roadway jamming up your comm o tri valley.
6:21 am
that is an issue. see if we can get it toward our waze in the control room to sort things out. thanks you guys. we have a number of wazers reporting a crash right there. you see this lower drive 880, if you have a choice coming down toward mission is a much smoother easier drive. not everybody can make that choice. you will be slowing down about 15 minutes, 10 to 15 minutes. we want to thank one of the wazers out there. they don't have their names on there. it says wazers. we say thank you and join nbc bay area wazers, a team that can help you out no matter where or when you're traveling throughout the bay. back out to the map, we look through contra costa county and in toward the bay bridge, the upper east shore freeway slowdown toward san pablo avenue, the crash blocks some lanes. we see the traffic holding up from highway 4 down past san pablo avenue but that benefits the folks through traffic if you are south of richmond, you're moving just fine through the m aay bridge toll plaza itself. the metering lights are on at the bay bridge and t san mateot
6:22 am
a lot more traffic now on west 92. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it is 6:22 right now. coming up next, an alert before you go get gas. the skimmer just found in the east bay and the man police say is responsible. but first, nbc bay area responds. >> a thief wracks up $4,000 in food charges 2400 miles away, but the people here need our help getting that fixed. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next. poli

identifying him 6:25. do you recognize this man here? police need your help in identifying him. they say he's behind a credit card skimming operation at a brentwood gas station. police believe he's installed a skimming machine in may or even june, then used stolen information to withdraw money from different banks in fremont. >> 6:25. nbc bay area responds to a peninsula couple whose door dash account was hacked. >> apparently hungry thief 2400 miles away run up a huge tab. the couple asked chris chmura to investigate. >> reporter: they live here but all of the sudden door dash started charging their credit card for lots of food deliveries around cleveland, 59 different orders over the next 14 days, a
6:26 am
total of $4,500 in unauthorized charges. they say they reported the hack to door dash and the company said it was investigating but the charges continued multiple times a day. so they wrote us. we contacted door dash and the very same day they got an email from door dash that apologized, reversed the $4,500 in charges and froze their account so the unauthorized orders would stop. door dash sent a statement saying "thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. door dash takes the security of its platform seriously and we have investigated and taken action to address this issue." morgan and rishton said the ert dona's proof setting up alerts on your accounts especially your credit and debit accounts is vital to cut off fraudsters as early as possible. rushton works in tech and will be offering door dash ideas for improving its security.
6:27 am
do you have a complaint, tell us about it, 888-996-tips or nbcbayarea.com/responds. >> 6:27 right now. here's what we're working on for "today in the bay" next. fighting school threats. the move that the fbi is making as one east bay school ramps up security this morning just one of three local communities dealing with this, this week alone. also at 6:30, a push to add more housing in the south bay. the plan to repurpose a sh shut down hall and the controversy going along with it. plus -- >> a heartbroken family asking for more time, this fight over life support stands this morning.
6:28 am
6:29 am
6:30 am
a very good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joique us. taking a live look outside, at redwood forest in redwood city. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's head over to meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast. cool start to the morning. >> it was a very nice shot. here is another one, a live look outside and palo alto, as you get ready to head out the door. cool morning across the bay area. by 10:00, we're still in the upper 50s here and a few clouds moving by, after all of that, it clears out, temperatures head into the upper 60s for early afternoon, as you get your way
6:31 am
out the door for that morning commute, check out those numbers there in morgan hill. 48 degrees. yes, you need a jacket, and as we go through the day heading into the upper 60s. mike, as we head over to -- you have two traffic alerts? >> can't just have one. both of the crashes have been tracking into traffic alerts. we also have a new issue focusing on a roadway hazard in san jose, a concern of mine north 101 at tully, but the first traffic alert chp issues this advisory when they think it will be a big impact and we've seen that southbound 680, just about auto mall parkway past auto mall before mission in the critical section for your commute. we do have the two lanes blocked and that's why chp issued the advisory in our waze system only shows a 15-minute delay only. 15 minutes is huge in the morning, right, we know about that and all folks are building in out of the tri valley, that will be a concern. you'll see more folks headed toward the castro valley area taking 580, 238 toward 880, that
6:32 am
still holds up standard past the san mateo and dumbarton bridges. off tay carquinez bridge and we'll that advisory over the last few minutes. sounds like they're having trouble getting a tow truck there because of all the traffic on the freeway getting there as well. anywhere past that let's say richmond past golden gate field and berkeley look at the big benefit, two sites to the drash, the jam off the carquinez bridge and easier drive toward the bay bridge but the metering lights are still on there. back to you. >> thank you, mike. >> 6:32 for you right now and happening today, on alert right now, police are increasing their presence at one east bay school this morning, after a suspicious note was found on campus. >> this is the third such threat in the east bay over the past few days. "today in the bay's" bob riddell joins us live outside livermore high. do we know what the note says?r. it was a handwritten note some students found in a restroom here at livermore high school.
6:33 am
it was anonymous according to school officials but the superintendent of the school district send out a voice mail and email to parents and i'm quoting the livermore police reassured us this evening that there is no credible threat to our campus. as a precaution, however, lpd is expected to have more police officers at the school. the school will have a strong and visible adult presence on campus as well. full disclosure, my daughter attends lhs, will be going to school today. she knows at least one friend who is concerned about their safety and not going to school and also says there were a handful of friends who are putting posts on social media indicating they'd be skipping school as well. yesterday in concord, police investigated student reports that someone threatened on social media to shoot people at clayton valley charter high school, but officers were never able to find anyone who saw that post or knew who created it online and over the weekend, pittsburg police investigated a
6:34 am
threat made online against pittsburg high but determined it not to be a credible threat. yoi coincidentally, the fbi is set to announce later today at about a new public awareness campaign to stop people from making false threats against schools. houston's fbi division will host a news conference to officially launch #thinkbeforeyoupost. the new public awareness campaign will educate the public about the consequences of making hoax threats against schools and reporting live in livermore, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, thank you. 6:34 right now. new this morning, police on the peninsula say a quick response from officers helped capture an attempted rapist. that victim called 911 last night saying she had been attacked in menlo park near woodland avenue and oak court. she managed to fight off that attacker because officers were nearby and that woman provided a good description. police tracked the 19-year-old suspect down in minutes.
6:35 am
he is facing multiple charges. >> at 6:35, we all know we have a major housing crisis right here in the bay area. so it is a big day for affordable housing in the city of cupertino where developers have a new plan for the old v valco mall. >> but with more housing comes the potential of crowding and congestion, and some people are saying no thanks. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in cupertino. kris, how many homes are we talking about here? >> reporter: you don't have to live in cupertino to have been here or past it. it is a giant thing and that is why the development plan is also big but today the city of cupertino is talking about the site's specific plan a precursor to any development. the city council will look at the plan that would generate at minimum 2,000 residential housing units, 600,000 square feet of commercial space,
6:36 am
750,000 feet of office space, 339 hotel rooms and six acres of open space. these numbers could increase more if cupertino changes its rules regarding housing density. as it stands right now, the three-story mall is a ghost town with a handful of businesses still open. the last time i brought my kids here i think we had the whole place to ourselves. the developer sam hill is putting forward the plan it says it will provide housing for all income levels in a transit oriented neighborhood with open space accessible for all cupertino residents. some residents say this is just too much too fast, in particular, the grassroots group better cupertino promises to challenge any plan that the city council approves today. they are asking people to show up with red on today. this streamlines the process of creating more housing for communities, so a lot of

communities all around the bay area from san jose to san francisco are watching what's happening in cupertino today. in cupertino, kris sanchez "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. >> it is 6:37. a 6-month-old oakland boy is in a coma at stanford hospital. in a case now reviving a debate over life support. his name kingston holmes, and he's been in an irreversible coma for the past month since suffering cardiac arrest. he was moved to stanford after his parents and community members begged oakland's children's hospital to allow more time before pulling the plug. the holmes family says that doctors are recommending taking him off life support but they are still holding out for hope. >> he is moving. he's wiggling his toes. he is moving his feet as well as his hands. >> and this case reminding some of jahad mcmath. in that case doctors sought to

there complained to the city that drivers from outside of the neighborhood are parking there overnight and sometimes for days on end. if the council moves forward, drivers will need a permit during overnight hours. we're looking over here, no real parking lots. we're recovering from two of our traffic alerts, should be moving better. upper east shore freeway westbound 80 the first traffic alert cleared over the last couple of minutes at san pablo dam road. speeds improving at spdr, back at hercules it still crawls after the carquinez bridge. the second traffic alert that also cleared southbound 680 at just past auto mall, we have all lanes just reopened and we should see good recovery but more traffic coming down out of sunol and pleasanton. tri valley looking good and the south bay no problem that earlier hazard i was worried about north 101 at tully is off to the shoulder as well. lot of progress over ten
