we start with kristen welker at the white house. >> reporter: it is a high-stakes he said/she said, with brett kavanaugh and the woman accusing him of sexual assault, are expected to tell their series of events during a hearing next monday. a white house official tells me that kavanaugh is chomping at the bit to clear his name. a frenzied effort by republicans to save his confirmation. this morning, judge brett kavanaugh and christine blasey ford, the woman accusing him of sexual assault three decades ago are preparing for a dramatic showdown and both set before the senate judiciary committee testimony next monday. >> i may conclude afterwards hearing. >> reporter: kavanaugh, in he may not. a lot will depend on that damage contrwmakol mods personally. president trump defending his embattled nominee. finest people i've ever known.

he's an outstanding intellect. never having even a little blemish on his record. >> reporter: 61-year-old blasey ford says that kavanaugh assaulted her at a party in the early '80s. when both were in high school. ford said kavanaugh, then 17, stumbling drunk at a house party. allegedly pinned her to a bed and groped her while another teenage boy watched. kavanaugh denies the allegation, saying he was never at the party in question. saying this is a false allegation. i've never done anything like what the accuser describes. >> does she consider this she clearly considers this attempted rape. >> reporter: saying her client stands by her account. on capitol hill, mounting fallout, orrin hatch says kavanaugh told him he was never at the party. >> i think this woman is messed

a lot will have to do with, what more do we learn this week. are there -- is there anybody else from the high school days to come out and back one story or the other? is there other -- not necessarily allegations, but evidence to help back one story over the other. i think a lot depends on that this week. if any little thing we don't know comes out before the hearing on monday, i don't think the hearing happens. if the hearing happens, i think this is something that's fraught for peril for both political parties. >> that's my next question. just the specter of a hearing, a public hearing. we have seen this before. anita hill, clarence thomas, a generation ago. who could forget. what a high-wire act. for both parties. >> this is actually in an election year. i remember that. i was here in washington for that. and that wasn't an election year. that was the beginning of a presidential campaign.

rivers are rising throughout north carolina, as all this rain from florence rushing downstream. the death toll from this storm is up to 31 across several states. overnight, tornado watches across virginia, after powerful twisters left debris over an 18-mile stretch. from richmond to chesterfield. downed trees, flipped cars. one person died at this flooring business. >> they're our neighbors. and to have them lose somebody so close to them is heartbreaking. >> reporter: the tornadoes are remnants of hurricane florence still packing a punch days after landfall. huge swaths of north carolina are under water, roads impossible, communities cut off. >> catastrophic flooding and tornadoes are still claiming lives and property. >> reporter: this tour boat operator from florida found a

pregnant woman and her family desperately clinging to a tree after the raging flood waters swept them away. lumberton was ravaged by matthew two years ago. now, it's devastated again. we were there as the coast guard evacuated lindsay smith and her two young boys. >> water is still rushing into the south side of west lumberton. >> reporter: it's not over. >> no. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of people without water. >> it was coming in right there. >> reporter: amid the heartbreak, signs of hope, as not evacuate. dry land never felt so good. here in fayetteville, the cape fear river is expected to crest at almost 62 feet today. that would be a record. some rivers are expected to stay above flood stage until saturday. hoda and savannah.

>> gabe, thank you. let's go to dylan in for al. where the storm is headed next is the question on everybody's mind. dylan, good morning. >> good morning, guys. the storm is heading into the northeast. that's why we have flash flood watches and warnings all across new england, in eastern pennsylvania and in maryland, too. keep in mind the thunderstorms and downpours that we see are tropical in nature. it's the remnants of florence. these could produce an inch to half an inch of rainfall. all within a short period of time. looking across the northeast, all of the yellows, and oranges and reds, that's the rain we're seeing in new hampshire and moving into eastern pennsylvania. even though the rain has ended in north and south carolina, there are still 11 rivers in major flood stage. we will see these overflow their banks. looking at the little river at manchester, north carolina, it is above record high flood stage. it stays above flood level all the way into the start of the weekend. the cape fear river, as gabe

just mentioned is close to 62 feet. it will stay above flood stage until saturday. when it will finally go below its banks. in the northeast, we're looking up to three inches of rain in some areas. that could lead to flash flooding. but the river concern will remain an issue all week. look who is back from north carolina. craig, welcome back. you have more news to cover. >> our friends in the carolinas, they're going to be recovering for some time. our thoughts and prayers are with them this morning. talks under way for the third time this year, between the leaders of north and south of korea. kim jong-un embracing moon jae-in in south korea this morning. people at the airport waving unification flags. moon said he will push for denuclearization and irreversible permanent peace. kim told moon that his summit with trump in june, stabilized the political situation in the region.

paints of his life, in his new book "dear america: notes of an undocumented citizen." thanks for coming in. for folks that are not familiar with your story. you're born in the philippines and come to this country at the age of 12. >> yes. walk us through how that came to be. >> my mother brought me to america when i was 12. when i was 16, i went to the dmv to get a driver's license and i found out that the greenwa fake. and that's how i found out. that was 1997. there was no google. in this country, people talk about illegal immigration andty they it's about mexicans and i'm filipinos. it was difficult from the beginning. >> you had to live in the 30. i was a journalist because my name could be on a piece of

paper. if i don't have the right papers, why can't my name be on a piece of paper. i started writing for newspapers. when i was 30, i decided to come out as undocumented, to tell the government that, we are not who you think we are. and this is not what you think it is. >> and that article that helped make you the face -- one of the faces of the movement, sure. what's the book about? why did you feel the need to write it? >> especially now. we're living in the most anti-immigrant moment in this country's history. the only analogies, maybe 1920s 100 years ago. the book is about, what does it mean to have to lie and have to pass. clearly, i'm not hiding from the government. it was not hiding from me. i was 25, and proud to pay taxes. i contribute to this country. this is my home. at any point, anybody can come get me.

>> how fearful were you living in the sthad dhadows? >> i was from mountain view, california, where google is. if it wasn't for my principal, my teachers, i wouldn't have gotten to where i got. the book is about that. it's about what happens when you welcome people and have a community. the community in mountain view, they decide who belongs. they're the ones who decide how they define american. >> i would imagine you have people. you're a high-profile journalist. you have people that say, came in with illegal papers. get to the back of the line. sign up for else. what do you say to those people? >> journalists say that to me. i tell them, there's no line. isn't it incredible how much we talk about this issue. how the president tweets and won the election about this issue. people have no idea that there's no line for me to wait in the back of. if i was, i would be listening to beyonce waiting in line.

it )s happened again - good morning. it's 8:56. i'm marcus washington. it's happened again. another brazen grab and go robbery at a wireless store. this is new video from t mobile in concord. police say that last night three men ran into that store and took off with $6,000 worth of devices. the store is in the park and shop shopping center on willow pass road. we spoke with the owner of the metro pcs store in the same shopping center who says his store has been hit also. if this seems familiar to you, it is because it's happened several times before. here's a look at similar robberies at apple stores just within the past month across the entire bay area. no word if that concord incident is linked to any of the other robberies. a mysterious death has one san jose neighborhood on edge.
