5:00 am
shot. thanks for starting your day with us ontoay." i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia. the weather forecast the if you have some outdoor plans today, get it done early, if you're making your way out the door to the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station on the way to work. it's going to be cool, grab a jacket, only mid-50s and at 9:00 at 65 degrees, mid-70s. look at our highs today, notice it's going to be warmer today compared to yesterday. you may have to turn on the air conditioning for a little bit in antioch, headed up to 88 degrees. i'll talk more about this and also the increased fire danger as our temperatures heat up, that's coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right, kari. folks are wrapping up their work day. folks working around the clock around the bay area, i saw a big line at starbucks around 4:00 in the morning. in the south bay we see a smooth drive on the peninsula, affected later in the commute, tend to see later work there.
5:01 am
overnight roadwork here may be picking up as folks on highway 84 should be finishing right about now and we see the sensors start to lighten up a little bit, overnight road crew also start to clear. over here this will get a little more red and orange out of the altamont and in toward livermore. grant line where things start to move better, northin is no problem. the other crew over here at westbound 80 through hercules looking at those crews clearing right now as well. we'll get the all clear from chp and cal trans once the lanes are moving at speed. slowing highway 4 into san pablo. peninsula side palo alto is easy and light. back to you. >> thanks, mike. developing right now, the hearing in washington monday with the president trump's supreme court nominee and the palo alto professor accusing him of sexual assault may not happen. >> this is up in the air because christine blasey ford is asking the fbi to investigate first. tracie potts is on capitol hill
5:02 am
developments. tracie, we've never seen anything like this before. >> , haven't, and we certainly have seen a situation like this, but now, she has said that she's willing to tell her story, but wants the fbi to get the facts before lawmakers start peppering her with questions on monday. >> that she felt strongly that that was the right -- >> reporter: lawyers for christine blasey ford say she's getting death threats, had to move her family and that the fbi should get the facts on her 36-year-old assault claim before lawmakers start asking her questions. >> rushing forward into a hearing when she's under this much pressure isn't the way to do it. the hearing should be as a result of the investigation. it shouldn't be a subste republy no more delays. >> if she does not want to come monday, publicly or privately, we're going to move on and vote wednesday. >> reporter: judge brett kavanaugh denies assaulting ford and says he's ready to testify today. president trump is standing by his supreme court nominee,
5:03 am
reluctant to involve the fbi. >> they don't want to be involved. th if they wanted to be i would certainly do that but this is not really their thing. >> reporter: ford's accusation drawing parallels to the 1991 confirmation of justice clarence thomas and anita hill's testimony before an all male panel. >> i want to say to the men in this country, just shut up and step up. dot rig do the right thing for a change. >> reporter: on monday they may not be doing anything at all. and now we're starting to see republicans really push for ford to show up at this hearing. couple of them tweeting this morning about this being a delay tactic, even jeff flake, who had said a republican who had said he wanted to hear her out before voting, now says he implores her to show up on mond we don't know yet, though, if that will actually happen. she wants this fbi investigation, and it looks like it may not happen, certainly not before monday. >> we know a lot of the women in
5:04 am
her neighborhood have been trying to help her along, offered to take care of the family, deliver meals so that she can be there. they want her to be there and fe tracie. what do you think about paying for 911 calls? >> i thought we were already doing that. >> sort of. it may be happening for some folks in eastern contra costa county. some say it doesn't make sense because it's paid for in your taxes, like you said. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from brentwood with details. people are asking why, since we pay through with taxes. what's happening here? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. lot of questions, when you hear about the idea of paying for 911, but when it comes to the east county contra costa county fire district, they're saying it will essentially add another revenue stream for them especially when it comes to possibly building more fire stations and also serving a growing area of contra costa county, like a place where we're standing here in brentwood. now, i want to point out these are for specific incidents that
5:05 am
we're talking about. probably the most common one that would happen is a car crash. there would be a fee for that. helicopter landings, water rescues. you see the list there on your television screen. now this won't kick in for another few months from now but for car crashes it could be a fee of $400 and other incidents it could cost more. the fire district says this could bring in potentially $50,000 annually to the district as another line of revenue, but residents as you mentioned there, aren't too happy about it. >> if we're not getting the same coverage anyways and to pay addition ol on tal on top of th totally wrong. >> the district is trying to find ways to get revenue in the district. we need more stations. >> reporter: now that video you guys are looking at right there is a fire district finance chair joe young who voted against this, because he said that nickel and dime revenue won't really fix the problem.
5:06 am
he could be saying because the cost to build a new fire station is roughly $10 million and another $4 million just to operate it. we're live here in brentwood, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. developing right now, san francisco police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened around 9:00 last night at 46th avenue in the outer sunset near great highway. we know the victim is a man, but that man has not been identified, and so far, police tell us there are no arrests. and new this morning an east bay middle school student is arrested for allegedly making social media threats against diablo view middle school in clayton. police say the student hacked into swunlomeone else's social a account and the arrest comes after livermore high school yesterday and two schools in contra costa county monday. the fbi is making a new public awareness campaign called think before you post, aiming to stop people from making false threats
5:07 am
against schools. we'll continue coverage for you right now, there is hope for san jose's hope village, which is a homeless camp. the city and santa clara county are working on an agreement where the county would lease city-owned property, next to the original hope village homeless camp. the new property would serve as a temporary site for up to six months, located not far from san jose airport. this comes as governor brown signs a bill to allow unused cal tran plan to house the homeless. this law will only apply to two cities, san jose and los angeles. both cities will be able to lease up to ten parcels of land for just $1 per month. >> interesting that we're part of that pilot. happening today, santa rosa's water warning for the fountain grove neighborhood first issued after last year's fire storm may finally be lifted. that warning went into place right after the tub fire virtually wiped out the neighborhood. santa rosa leaders today are supposed to hold a vote on
5:08 am
lifting that warning. a warning about higher fire danger from sonoma county sheriff. he sent out this tweet, warning everybody the fire threat increases starting tonight. kari hall has been tracking this for us this morning. what are we talking about here? >> it means conditions will be favorable for any wildfires that develop that could spread in the hills, as we head through tonight into tomorrow, and it's for these areas shaded in orange, this put out by the national weather service saying that because we will have an increasing wind, decreasing humidity, and those hilltop wind gusts to 35 miles per hour, you do have to be very careful with any flames, because they could cause some wildfires to spread, and our winds will shift in from the north, bringing us the lower humidity and the higher temperatures, but we'll see those winds picking up once again between tonight and throughout the day on tomorrow. so we'll continue to monitor that as our temperatures go up for the north bay. we're headed into the upper 80s, and it's going to feel very much
5:09 am
like summer, slightly warmer temperatures for the rest of the bay area. so i'll have an eye on that, and i'll have a l palo alto's temperature trend coming up. mike, you were looking for a mattress on the reporoad? >> this is down in the south bay. we take a second for everyone to look at sensors, almost everyone is at the limit. we have one delay on the upper east shore we were talking about earlier but i want to point out 280 at 680 right around where the 101 shield is there, where they all come together and reports of a mattress in the middle of the roadway. chp will take a swing through the area, we'll also look with our live camera to see if we can find anything but no slowing showed up on the sensors. there is slowing right here, the upper east shore freeway and through hercules we talked about that road crew about ready to clear from lanes westbound 80 right now, is slow from highway 4 just past the hercules exit and clear by the time you get to san pablo. the overnight crews should be cleared in the next few minutes. i'll watch that carefully because we don't want any complications early in the commute. over here dublin we have a good
5:10 am
volume of traffic, the tri valley moves well. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, mike. coming up, it was a proposal seen and heard around the country at the emmy awards. next, you'll hear from the newly engaged couple for the first time since their big, big night. plus, men only. facebook sued over a set of job postings. we'll look in business next. plus it may be partially open but san francisco's trans bay terminal center is still under construction but not for long. when it's expected to be complete, coming up for you next. 5:10 right now. you're watching "today in the bay."
5:11 am
5:12 am
5:13 am
the time is now 5:13. on this wednesday morning, time to get up and out the door, as we take a live look outside and palo alto, a few people already on the way to work. our temperatures will start out in the mid-50s, at 9:00, we're going to see those temperatures going from the 50s to the low 70s today. logical b a little bit warmer than yesterday but a bigger difference inland. i'll talk about that and what's ahead for the weekend, coming up in about five minutes. >> we're looking at the san mateo bridge getting to palo alto where kari just showed you how light the traffic is. the tail lights we have a number to deal with but no problems for the speeds and the bay bridge a little to the north, completely clear. we're ready for that commute. i'll show you what's in store. >> a very good good morning to you. happy wednesday. glad you're with us. stocks rallied tuesday despite another round of tariffs by the
5:14 am
u.s. and china. netflix higher after its big wins at the after that now infamous tweet from ceo elon rumusk saying he was considering taking the company private and naming a price. there's nothing wrong with speculating per se, but you can't try to deliberately affect a stock price, and the stock price of tesla was affected immediately. the question is, was it deliberate or was it just a really dumb tweet? facebook has been sued by the aclu and a at first glance there appear to following advertisements. be nothing wrong with the advertisements. it was out in maryland but it only targeted men. this is for one of the police departments there and they wanted people about 18 to 25 but not just regular people but only people who were men. facebook has been accused of doing this with housing as well
5:15 am
or allowing it anyway. kris and marcus, look at this. this is a mansion, it is out in los altos hill once owned by robert noyce. they are spending a lot of time in their second home, you know how that can be. they're going to sell t five bedroom, three bath, $21.8 million. it is apparently on the golf course so if you're in the market -- >> i don't play golf. that's the only reason i'll pass. >> my first reaction with the kids and craziness in my house, three ro bathroom. >> and all that white furniture, too. i don't know. no kids in there. thank you very much. so how did you sleep last night? a lot of folks are turning to a trendy new drink to try sep but morning, some doctors are warning you to be careful about
5:16 am
so-called dream drinks. they contain melatonin but also less understood ingredients like gava and leathenine. >> some have not been studied in breast feeding patients, not studied in the elderly and may potentially cause harm for some patients who suffer from depression. >> experts remind all of us to talk to a doctor before taking any kind of sleeping aid. meanwhile if you're a nursing mother, you don't have any trouble sleeping. we alsoet engaged live on national television here on nbc bay area monday night. cool moment there, this is during the emmy awards. touching moment for many. glenn weiss won an award and from the podium he called out his long time girlfriend and proposed. she said yes and that night we certainly heard a lot from him but here's what she's telling the "today" show this morning.
5:17 am
>> we always talked about we'd be together forever, and but we never really talked about marriage, so i was really stunned and surprised, in the best of ways. >> look at that. beautiful moment there. you can watch that full interview with the newly engaged couple coming up on the "today" show. that is right after "today in the bay." >> i don't know, i said no to the public proposal with my husband, i was like no thank you. he's like jumbo tron? no. >> there's a lot of pressure. national audience. >> live tv. >> better be sure she's going to say yes. >> cool way to do it. cooler temperature this is morning? >> this morning, but this afternoon, it's going to be, yeah, starting to heat up. we're talking about the return of summer across the bay area, and here's a live look outside in san jose, let's head to east san jose to evergreen, now normally reaching the low 80s and we'll already be in the mid-70s by 1:00 today and temperatures will continue to go up from there as we go into the
5:18 am
afternoon, if you're making plans to go out for a run or on your way out the door to the gym in antioch it's going to be in the mid-50s, a cool start and if you head out later on throughout the morning, it's still going to be comfortable at noon. we're at 73 degrees, and then making plans, head to school this morning. i know the kids are not up yet. pleasanton your school day forecast 53 degrees, a chilly walk to school, and we all will start out with some fall-like temperatures this morning, but then it heats up fast, at 1:00 we're at 78 degrees, as we head into the upper 70s, or upper 80s rather for the south bay, we've had some 70s. we'll be up to 85 in martinez, and 75 in hayward. not bad, half moon bay staying in the mid-60s and san mateo 72 degrees. san francisco 66 on the embarcadero and the north bay we'll see the temperatures there heading up to 85 in sonoma today. our seven-day forecast looks like this, we go from the mid
5:19 am
80s today, which is about normal, but then we head up even hotter into the low 90s for the next three days, and that's when we officially welcome in fall on saturday evening, but it's going to indeed feel like summer in the valleys, and then we'll still be in the mid 80s throughout early next week. san francisco not seeing as much in the way of clouds and fog, but staying nice and comfortable. now mike, someone checking on that mattress, anyone sleeping on it? >> try catch a few more winks. don't be sleeping on the road weis. that's right, kari, we have our live camera in san jose and 101, it shows a good volume, moving well, underneath that interchange flashing lights, we'll check on that. looks like it's okay, they're changing lanes. meanwhile 280/680 they go over 101. no slowing, no flashing lights, that mattress was reported right in that area where we have the camera so i did scan, still no slowing shows up. watch through the area if you're
5:20 am
leaving the house in the next couple of minutes and you have to travel through that portion of san jose, but the south bay, the peninsula, across the bay, all moves great right now, even the tri valley, no real slowing, except for over 84, a little slowing for that overnight crew, as you head down in toward isabel, and i circled this crew right here, west 80, we've seen a good deal of slowing for the last 20 minutes but cal trans just updated and gave the all clear for lanes so likely to see the sensors improve and everybody at speed from the carquinez bridge down to the berkeley curve in the next few. unfortunately it's the same time for the bay bridge wherehtset t on the map, a little slowing out of vallejo for west 37th, stan a you through mayor island. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up, the very latest on the construction of the trans bay terminal center in san francisco. it's still not complete but there is some good news why the end is near.

5:25 am
and this crazy stunt almost cost one man his life. this was a yellowstone national park, recorded by a stunned visitor. i want to you take a look here. this man walked up to the old faithful geyser and sat down next to it. >> stupid. >> of course the geyser explodes boiling hot water. this got the attention of park rangers who ordered that man to get up. he did, before the geyser blew and rangers arrested him. >> don't do that. all right, many of carrie underwood's fans have been waiting months to hear her talk about the accident that left her face badly injured. >> she finally opens up about it today on "ellen." here's a first look. >> so you hit like without protecting, you went right face first into -- >> i went to catch myself and i barely missed the step, and then kind of jammed my hand in there and hit face. >> so we'll see if ellen can get underwood to reveal thef her baby. you know she's pregnant. you'll see it on nbc bay area at
