issue. the backup at the toll plaza looks standard this time in the morning but they may turn the metering lights on pretty early. that's westbound. getting through contra costa county, same thing to alameda county and the rest of the bay down through the south bay and coming up from the south county things are looking clear. no problems, no fog detected on our road weather index. what do you have for us? >> it's all clear as we take a live look in palo alto. we can see traffic is flowing smoothly there. no issues as we take a look at the numbers. our temperature trend will be at 59 degrees at 9:00 and upper 70s as we go into the afternoon. now,ly. we also have a high fire danger in bay area hill. all of these areas shaded in red, thanks where we will have the potential of increasing wind, low humidity and high wind gusts that could cause any spark

to cause a wildfire. that could spread rapidly. that includes the santa cruz mountains, parts of the hills in marin county as well as up through northern sonoma county, napa county and down to the diablo range. we're looking at a wide area across the bay area that will have a high fire danger throughout the day. >> thanks, kari. let's go out to oakland hills where pete is live for us. what's the impact it's going to have? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. there's a high chance or probability of fire danger in the oakland hills. obviously there's a lot of history when we talk about oakland hills and fire danger. we're on hilliard drive. the fire danger is at extreme because oakland fire has put in a red flag warning because of the winds and the humidity in the area.

that red flag warning means there could b a simple spark could cause a wildfire in these types of areas with these conditions. now, i want to point out, joaquin miller park is closed as a result. i've hiked in that area plenty of time. there's plenty of brush in that area. that makes sense why this area is closed due to this warning. oakland fires will still have the normal operations but they'll add roving patrols to the oakland hills as a result of this warning. as i mentioned, there's a history of wildfires obviously here in the oakland hills when you take into account what happened back in 1991. the oakland fire taking out thousands it of homes. you see that fire danger sign here in the oakland hills. oakland fire, i want to point out, give folks a text message in the event of any emergency. also, they're going to be on

very high alert today because of this red flag warning. we're live here in the oakland hills, "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. 5:03. the standoff continues in the supreme court confirmation of brett kavanaugh. christine blasey ford and her lawyers are not backing off for calling for an fbi investigation. they really want it to happen before a new hearing takes place. >> but that request is looking less likely by the day. senators in charge say they won't wait with a hearing scheduled for monday. "today i p on. tts joins us. >> reporter: one of the options lawmakers are exploring, sending staff members there to the bay area to speak with dr. ford if they can't get her to come to washington. there's now a deadline, 10:00

a.m. tomorrow for christine blasey ford to submit documents if she plans to document monday. >> either in an open session or closed session or a public or a private interview. >> reporter: even in california where she lives. but ford's attorney insists before she talks about the alleged assault, denied by judge brett kavanaugh, it is fbi needs to investigate. plus, she wants more witnesses. the rush to a hearing is unnecessary and contrary to the committee discovering the truth. her attorney says in a new statement to nbc. >> they're trying to set up a he said/she said scenario and bully her into testifying on monday or not be heard at te interview. >> you can't put the genie back in the bottle and the american people are entitled to hear from both of them. >> reporter: president trump reluctant to get the fbi involved.

>> they've investigated six times before and it seems they won't do that. >> reporter: they will if asked. he's the only one who can. here at home you may see a dr. ford. support in the sky we're joined from palo alto with details on palo alto council dealing with an rv. they tried to start a program to help those who live in rvs, which rvs could be parked on city-owned land but it only holds 20. more rvs are parking on the streets so the city council is considering an ordinance of those who park rvs on city streets overnight. police are still searching for three robbery suspects in the east bay. officers released surveillance of that robbery. this was at a t-mobile store in

concord. three men dashed through the store, stole thousandss and madn for it. police are asking for your help in identifying those suspects. new details in a bizarre sexual assault scandal involving a surgeon and his girlfriend in orange canth. we first told you about this case yesterday morning and authorities say more than half a dozen victims came forward. that makes at least eight victims in total. prosecutors say there may be as many as 1,000 victims. investigators say one of those victims described the newport beach couple as a bonnie clyde team who drugged her and forced her to participate i acts. two l.a. county sheriff deputies recovering after a gun fight with suspects. deputies stopped a suspicious car and the three men inside open fire. both deputies were shot during

the shootout but they're expected to be okay. one suspect died at the scene. the other two were taken into 5:07 right now. happening today, a new campaign organized specifically for the hispanic community launching in the bay area. the mexican consulate in san francisco is helping lead the campaign along with the concord police department. it's meant to bring awareness to both domestic and -- domestic violence and driving under the influence. leaders plan to present it today later. a new law allows those 18 years or old not wearing a helmet while riding motorized scooter. the change comes as san francisco recently awarded permits to several scooter rental companies. the law also says a maximum speed of 15 miles p hour for scooters. it goes into effect on january 1st. right now as we approach

5:08, we start out with cool te morning. we're heading to cupertino where our temperatures will be in the 50s and quickly making it already into the mid-60s by 9:00 this morning. we are going to see those temperatures going up fairly fast today. before you know it, we'll be in the mid-80s for the afternoon. let's head over to dublin where it will be even hotter in the trivalley, looking at some 90s today. we'll be at 92 degrees at 4:00 this afternoon. a lot of sunshine. make sure you grab your water this morning and keep refilling that water throughout the day. stay hydrated especially with the temperatures in concord reaching 96 degrees. we'll be up to 88 degrees in san jose. air conditioners coming backt d span. as we look at the sensors around the bay. take a lks, you don't have any problems. south bay, we're looking at the east bay, the tri-valley filling in getting towards the bay bridge. all those avenues are great on the bridge itself.

mike traffic tease good thursday morning. we're making it closer to the weekend as we get a live look at palo alto this morning. our temperatures will be heating up fast, going from the upper 50s at 00 degrees at 1:00 today and some upper 70s as we look of our microclimate, a wide range and really hot valley temperatures. i'll talk about that and the high fire danger coming up in less than five minutes.

the san mateo bridge, no problems at this toll plaza. the bay bridge did start early. we'll monitor that. good morning. here are today's top business headlines. futures point to a positive open for wall street this morning after a mixed day yesterday. the dow rose 158 points led by goldman sachs. in the s&p 500, the overall financial sector enjoyed its best day in two months. the nasdaq closed lower, however, as amazon, netflix and apple all fell. looking aed head, today we'll get existing home sales and last week's jobless claims. amazon's ceo jeff bezos is continuing his out of this world investing, promising to contribute $1 billion to his rocket company, blue origin next

year. he says the company will begin flying people to space in the coming year. blue origin will use the suborbital flights along with satellite contracts for revenue as it competes with elon musk's spacex. those ticket prices have not yet been revealed. it's getting costlier to check bags on u.s. flights. delta following in the foot steps of united and jetblue by hiking feeing 5 to $30 for the first checked bag. the change comes after congress considers considering the transportation department to ask if baggage fees are proportional. airlines cite fuel costs and employee salaries as a reason for fee increases. >> i'd be okay with a fee increase if they gave us more seat room and leg room for people who are 6'4". >> more snacks.

1:00. seven-day forecast up at bottom of the screen. as we go to the south bay and they can out our highs for the afternoon. we're back in the 90s in south county and east san jose heading up towards milpitas. and we will also see some mid to upper 90s for parts of the delta down to the tri-valley. up to 93 in pleasanton. san francisco looking at some 70s today. in the north bay we're going to see some 90s there as well. if you do plan to head to the beach, half moon bay, temperatures reaching into the mid-60s. a lot of sunshine. really a nice day to go. if you're looking at something to do to start out the weekend, the walnut festival will be starting today but continuing tomorrow we'll have our treat truck out there. our temperatures will be in the mid-80s for the middle of the day. some great weather for getting some free ice cream. all you have to do is stop by and say hello. now, our temperatures will feel like summer going into the first day of fall, which officially

begins on saturday. and then we're still looking at some warm weather going into the beginning of next week with low 90s in the valleys. san francisco. keeping those upper 60s and low 70s through the middle of next week. heading over to mike, you've been tracking it is big issue of the bay bridge. now starting to back up in oakland. >> a little early here because we had that disabled vehicle on the span. they took care of that, the bridge crew did, took care of that and it's moving smoothly through treasure island. up the incline is not a major problem. better than a few minutes ago because the backup that built early at the toll plaza side. looks like the metering lights might have been turned on a few minutes early. filling in the entire parking lot and coming off the 880 overcross. no worry getting to the 880. you'll add another five minutes, maybe ten onto your wait just to be sure everything goes smoothly this morning. look at the drive times getting there. no major issues. 15 minutes from up here, highway 4 past the construction zone, which picked up for almost --

what exactly is he accused of, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you. judge john leittner, 62 years old, has been on the bench for 12 years. the state commission on judicial performance out of san francisco has charged the judge of nine counts of judicial misconduct, as outlined in the 16-page document filed by the commission. four charges accuse the judge of xually harassing about 12 women, including six deputy public defenders, a prosecutor, court reporter and defendants. in one incident he alleged lid told a court reporter she was hot and in another instance he's accused of winking at a deputy public defender and calls her up to the bench to see if she saw the wink. and they fail to notify them that his son worked for the

attorney's office, and offering defendants to plead guilty in return for 25% reduction in their sentences and fines. that was in an attempt to remove the backlog of cases. the bay city news service reports the judge's attorney was not available for comment. there will be a hearing before a panel that will then report back to the commission. if the commission decides to discipline the judge, he could face a range of consequences, including censure or removal from the bench. >> bob, thanks for that update. developing this morning,rtm. ers can't locate them based on follow-up safety check with sponsors that originally took them in. this is the second time in less than a year the federal agency disclosed case managers can't find the children.

a subcommittee has been formed. supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh's accuser is still in s seclusion. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in palo alto. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this will be one of the most visual displays of support here at the palo alto airport in a couple of hours. a plane will fly with a banner behind it saying, thank you, christine, we have your back. >> we'll be flying a banner with a simple, straightforward message that we believe christine, we have her back and we appreciate her. >> reporter: then there's this letter penned by ford's friend of ten years which reads in part, she absolutely has nothing to gain by this and everything to lose. she's not politically motivated.

she simply could not let this go by in good conscious by the appointment he was seeking. that friend told nbc that ford agonized for weeks. several funds popped up to help pay for protection. one is at the goal of $80,000. another started by a georgetown university law professor has more than $200,000. >> dear professor ford -- >> dear professor ford -- >> we know how difficult it is to stand up to powerful people. >> reporter: that video has more than 2 million views so far and the #dearprofessorford is trending online. all of the support does not change the fact that christine blasey ford wants the fbi to investigate the allegations against the supreme court nominee before she testifies and the deadline for her to say whether or not she's going to show up in washington is tomorrow.

in palo alto, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there. it's 5:36. he says he's not guilty. an exclusive jailhouse interview with a man at the center of a bizarre kidnapping case that captivated the bay area. this harvard educated lawyer accused of rape and kidnapping, defending himself, acting as his silence. jodi hernandez spoke with matthew muller. muller victimized denise huskins and aaron quinn in 2015, allegedly entering their home as they slept, tying them up, drugging them and raping and kidnapping huskins. muller pleaded guilty in federal court last year to kidnapping in exchange for a 40-year sentence, but now he plans to fight state charges that he kidnapped and raped huskins and falsely imprisoned her fiancee. >> i would love to be asked the questions and i don't have to

think about anything anymore other than just telling the truth. it's certainly a very intricate story, but a true one. truth is stranger than fiction sometimes. it will come out. there is evidence for exactly what it was that happened. >> muller will serve at his own attorney. the next week preliminary hearing, he'll likely directly request the couple. he's accused of terrorizing but he doesn't want to cause them any more pain, he says. we posted theor more highlights from her conversation. finally, a future for an ol mall.o convert the shopping mall into a $4 billion complex with homes, retail space and office space. council members said yes to the plan late last night. there was a pushback but in the end they said it will be a big boost for the economy. >> the mall has over 1 million

square feet of vacant space. that's the lion's share of the mall. the remaining tenants there are suffering from, obviously, being in a dead mall. they're looking for revitalization. this community is looking to have that mall restored as the social heart it was decades ago. >> several groups are fighting the project saying it would be too much for suburban this season for weekday afternoon baseball at the oakland coliseum. a live look at the coliseum this morning. this is where the a's will host the l.a. angels at 12:35 this afternoon. so, last night, the a's showed some real muscle there. ten runs and shut out the angels. they're actually still on track to play the new york yankees in a one-game playoff on october 3rd, but they'll have to work some magic to catch the yankees and host that all or nothing game. mike, fingers crossed, legs crossed, arms crossed.

compared to yesterday. as we get a look at san jose's temperature trend, we'll be at 56 degrees at 7:00 and a lot of sunshine today. our temperatures ramping up into the low 80s today which will be about like yesterday but a few degrees warmer in spots. we'll talk about those numbers and our high fire danger for today. that's coming up in less than five minutes. at the bottom of your screen, that southbound 880, slowing just developing. no surprises over there for the castro valley. looking at the peninsula, an easy drive as you expect southbound down. we do see something going on for fremont coming up. thank you so much. it's quarter to 6:00. dog owner's worst nightmare. a patrol officer in arizona was able to stop a man driving off with his dog tied to the vehicle. i want to let you know the dog is okay. a man driving a semitruck pulling out of a gas station, headed for the interstate when

an officer recognized -- look at the highlighted end. there was a dog still attached to the back of the big rig. you hear the officer activating his siren so quickly. he got that truck driver to stop. the driver was vy appreciative to the officer. new this morning, doctors who are on probation cannot hide that fact anymore. >> new law requires them to notify their patients. california just became the first state to pass this law. it's meant to inform patients if their doctor has committed sexual misconduct or other wrongdoing. there are some ways people can find that information online but now doctors will have to reveal it directly to patients. that law takes effect next july. money-saving options for prescription drugs are out there. but most experts agree, your pharmacist is likely not telling you about the deals. that's because the law right now puts it in the hands of insurance companies.
