"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> i'm marcus washington. we'll get to your weather in a moment but first the berkeley curve? >> yeah. and i want to see a scooter story because i saw a very unsteady rider yesterday. a live look from emeryville, you see the slowing. that's expected. the taillights lining up just by the temperature over here, the clock. as folks come over here, the flashing lights, that's one incident that just cleared quickly to the shoulder. that backup and distraction, we have more of a build coming down the bay bridge. look at all the green through coco county. that's good stuff. over here, highway 4, a little

slowing past baileywood. those sensors look great, slowing down towards hayward. we'll talk about that crash but so far it looks clear on my map but i don't have all the maps. >> everything looks clear across the bay area as we get warmer temperatures to move in. we don't have the on or about be breeze and marine layer. much cooler in morgan hill where we're going to be in the low 50s as you head out for that morning run or heading to the gym. if you wait until later on during the morning, it's going to warm up pretty fast. by noon we're up to 80 degrees there. looking at our high temperature, we'll be up to 92 in morgan hill today and mid-90s for the inland areas. those valleys will be really hot th could have some very dry

conditions. the winds will start to calm down as we go throughout the day. with that we still see this red flag warning in effect as we go into at least the morning hours, into early afternoon. all of these areas shaded in red, we have to be really careful with any sparks or flames because that could cause our -- our conditions could cause some very quickly spreading wildfires as we go throughout the day. that's the main story in weather today. hot, dry and a high fire danger, laura and marcus. >> we want to continue with that red flag warning. let's go out live to the oakland hills there. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live with the impact it will have. we take the oakland hills so seriouslyro here, peood rning t you. yeah, for good reason, because of the history of the fires in this area. that's why we're standing in one of those fire danger areas. oakland fire has put out to sho.

nhis is the and hilliard road. that shows you the fire danger is currently at extreme because of that red flag warning. now, that warning started yesterday. it's going to last through about 5:00 p.m. today. as kari just mentioned, it can take as little as a spark in this area to cause a wildfire in parts of the oakland hills and other areas we're seeing in the bay area. now, i want to point out for those folks that go hiking at joaquin miller park in oakland, that will be closed due to the fire warning. they say they'll have normal operations but there will be roving patrols in this area. if you see fire officials, oakland firefighters in this area, you live around here, that's why they're doing it. now, oakland hills fire, you can't forget, obviously, the 1991 oakland hills fires that took out thousands of homes in the area and killing 25 people. so, this area is very volatile as far as filed fires go. it's always a concern and that's the fire danger sign.ut

subscribe to acalerts for info. firefighters and residents should be on high alert at least through the early part of this evening. we're live here in oakland, peter suratos for "today in the bay." 6:04 now. police are searching for three robbery suspects in the east bay. officers released this surveillance video of that robbery. this is a t-mobile store in concord on monday. three men dashed into that store, stole thousands of dollars worth of phones and made a run for it. police are asking for your help in identifying those suspects. east palo alto leaders still trying to solve an rv problem. in july council members approved a pilot program helping those who live in their rvs. it allows rvs to be parked in a designated lot on city-owned land but the lot only holds0 rvs. most rvs are still parking on the street so the city council is considering an ordinance that would get tough on rvpark on ci.

new details in that biz sdmrar sexual assault scandal involving a surgeon and his girlfriend in orange county. we first told you about that case yesterday morning. authorities say that more than half a dozen new victims have come forward accusing that couple of drugging and sexually assaulting them. this makes at least eight victims in total. however, prosecutors say there may be as many as 1,000 victims. one of the victims described the newport beach couple as a bonnie and clyde team who drugged her and forced her to participate in sexual acts. two l.a. county sheriff's deputies recovering after a g fight with three suspects. authorities say they were investigating an assault reported from a park in east l.a. when deputies stopped a suspicious car. the three men inside open fire. both deputies were shot during the shootout but they're expected to be okay. one of the suspects died at the scene. the other two were taken into custody.

we'll certainly keep following and everyone's talking about it. in fact, here at home you may see a message of support in the sky today for dr. ford. kris sanchez will join us from palo alto live in the next half hour with a show of support. a new campaign organized specifically for the hispanic community launches in the bay area. now, the mexican consulate in san francisco is helping lead this campaign along with the concord police department, meant to bring awareness to domestic violence and under the influence driving. consulate leaders plan to present it later today in san francisco. no helmet, no problem. a new law allows people 18 or older the choice of not wearing a helmet while riding motorized scooter. governor jerry brown signed that legislation yesterday. the change comes as san francisco recently awarded permits to several scooter rental companies. the law also sets a mechanimaxi

of 15 miles an hour for those scooters. >> see those scooters all around the bay area now. as you make your way out to work, here's a live look outside in san jose. we can tell the skies are going to be clear. as we head through the 6:00 hour, we'll see the temperatures starting out warmer than yesterday. still cool as you step out for school this morning in san jose. we'll be at 55 degrees at 7:00. as the school day goes along, our temperatures will be warming up and will go from having the heater on to the air conditioning. our high temperature today reaching 88 degrees. this will be the peak of our temperature says as we look at that forecast for it the inland valleys. we'll be up to 95 in antioch today. in napa today, 91 degrees. we'll talk about what's ahead for fremont coming up and mike's now taking us to hayward. >> we're looking at hayward. the crash i talked about, southbound 880, middle of the screen where it's labeled ha couple minute delay getting everything off to

the shoulder. as we look overall, everything looks great. i'm going to zoom in towards that portion of the bay in the east bay. we do have a little more slowing heading south past that san mateo bridge. we have all lanes cleared, south 880/industrial parkway, that should help. if you have a choice between the dumbarton and san mateo bridge, some might have gotten out of the backup after seeing or hearing about delays. that motorcycle is moving along that service area. that's a service lane emergency vehicle. it's not for typical traffic. we see traffic jammed up westbound. no incidents reported on the span. we do see the high rise moving but i'll double check. this is a burst of traffic we usually see at 6:10. we have a berkeley curve backup as well. another crash for the area, approaching the area. the first crash was down below and the final approach at the palo on-ramp, another backup

gate bridge. it's all clear this morning. that's where you can find cooler temperature. as you get a look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen, yeah, it will be hot in the south bay today. let's head to the east bay, making your way out to work this morning in fremont. if you're on your way to the warm springs b.a.r.t. station, it will be 55 degrees at 7:00. and we go from the mid-50s to all that sunshine, warming those temperatures up. at noon we're at 79 degrees. we continue to go up from there, 83. if you plan to go hiking in areas where we have a high fire danger, check the trail status before you go. some trails may be closed. we'll have updates on that and the red flag warning in effect. if your trail is open, it's going to be warming up fast. it's best to get o there early. by 10:00 our temperatures are in the low 70s. heading up to 95 in antioch. livermore reaching 94 degrees.

it might be the middle lane. that's a big problem as folks will have to funnel on either side. as emergency crews get there, they're likely to reduce traffic at least for a short time to one lane, perhaps close it for a bit. we'll track this and get the update from both of those crews heading out there. west 92 is right now one to avoid because of the activity. there you go, just before you get to the high rise. take the dumbarton bridge if you can choose between the two this morning or head up to the bay bridge. the bay bridge is all right. you have the backup at the toll plaza. the rest of the bay, aside from the san mateo bridge, is looking all right. at least there's not quite so much the big push coming out of the tri-valley, the dublin and castro valley eas. getting towards the bay bridge, there's a little slowing down towards the berkeley curve and through berkeley a couple of crashes reported in the area by our camera. i zoom in on this towards powell. it looks like the slowing has cleared.

in san at 6:24 on your thursday morning, changes coming to improve diversity hiring in san francisco. mayor breed announced she's creating two full-time positions focused solely on recruiting minority employees for city departments. the decision comes from complaints made by dozens of african-american city employees alleging racial discrimination throughout the system. nbc bay area responds to a san mateo man who says his tablet went haywire. >> that was only half of his trouble so he turned to us. >> reporter: greg silverman says the screen on his new $2700 microsoft surface tablet was scrambled. he said microsoft agreed to swap it out under the warranty so greg shipped it back to them. he says he got absolutely nothing in return. after zero progress with the swap for 2 1/2 weeks, he wrote

we're looking at the coliseum because there's an early afternoon game today. if you're making plans to go there, keep in mind it will be warming up, a lot of sunshine and highs today reaching into the upper 70s. we take a live look at san jose and head to east san jose where we'll be in the mid to upper 80s. well above normal temperatures and a high fire danger leading into the weekend. i'll talk more about that as we head over to mike. your concerns about the san mateo bridge. >> i am, even though in the last three minutes we got the update from chp saying bridge crew arrived and all lanes were clear westbound 92, we see all these brake lights. westbound should start to move. the clear lane to ripple back to our camera and back to the toll plaza. that's why you'll still see a lot of slowing as that commute is building over onhe hayward side. lanes reported clear for west 92, shy of the height rise. the backup extends to folks

information but a cliff rescue going mason. >> 6:32 for you. a judge in the east bay finds himself in an unusual position, having to defend himself against charges of judicial misconduct. >> bob rydell joins us live from martinez where that judge provide presides. >> reporter: judge john laettner provides over cases at contra costa county superior courthouse in martinez. he's 62 years old. he's been on the bench for 12 years. to answer your question, the state commission on judicial performance based out of san francisco has charged the judge with nine counts of judicial misconduct as outlined in this 16-page document filed by the state commission. you can see it on your tv screen there. four charges accuse the judge of sexually harassing about 12 women, including six deputy public defenders, a prosecutor, a court reporter and defendants. in one incident he allegedly

told a court reporter she was hot. in another instance he's accused of winking at a public deputy public defender and calling her up to the bench to see if she saw that wink. the commission accuses the judge of failing to disclose in a timely way that his son was working for a district attorney's office, revoking the bail or own recognizance release of two defendants without a hearing and offering defendants to plead guilty in return for 25% reduction in their sentences and/or fines in an attempt to remove the backlog of cases. the bay city news reports judge laettner's attorney was not available for a comment. there will be a hearing before a panel that will report back to the commission. if the commission decides to discipline the judge, the range of consequences range from a number of things, including censure and removal from the bench. reporting live in martinez, bob rydell, "today in the bay." >> thank you for breaking that down for us. it's 6:33 right now

developing this morning the department of health and human services says it's lost track of nearly 1500 migrant children. in most cases the agency says case managers cannot locate them based on follow-up safety checks with sponsors that originally took them in. this is the second time in less than a year the federal agency disclosed case managers can't find the children. a senate subcommittee has introduced new legislation aimed at making the agency responsible for the care of the migrant children, even when they're no longer in custody. supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh's accuser is in seclusion as voices of support and opposition grow stronger and the deadline for the bay area's christine blasey ford to testify is just one day >> reporter: it's a strong message and it will be a big visual message. later on today here at the palo alto airport, a plane will fly over palo alto with a banner that says, thank you, christine, we have your back. now, there is also this letter

that was penned by ford's friend of ten years, which reads in part, she has absolutely nothing to gain by this and everything to lose. she is not politically motivated. she simply could not let this go by in good conscious given the appointment he's seeking. that friend told nbc that ford agonized for weeks about coming forward. ford's lawyer says she's getting death threat and funds popped up to help her pay for security. one started0nd one started by a georgetown law professor has $200,000. and then there's this video -- >> dear, professor ford -- >> dear professor ford. >> we know how difficult it is to stand up to difficult people. >> reporter: that video has more than 2 million views so far and the #dearprofessorford is now

trending. all of this support does not change the fact that ford has asked the fbi to investigate her allegations against brett kavanaugh before she's willing to testify and the deadline to say whether or not she'll testify is coming up tomorrow. a lot of things in motion, at least for today and going into the weekend and toward that monday hearing date. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." 6:36. only on nbc, an exclusive jailhouse interview with the man at the center of a bizarre kidnapping case that captivated the bay area. this harvard educated lawyer is accused of rape and kidnapping. now defending himself, acting as his own attorney and breaking his silence. prosecutors say matthew muller victimized denise huskins and aaron quinn, allegedly entering their home as they slept, tying them up, drugging them, raping and kidnapping huskins.

muller pled guilty in exchange for a 40-year sentence. now he plans to fight state charges that he kidnapped, rape huskins and falsely imprisoned her fiancee. >> i would love to take the stand and be asked the questions and i don't have to think about anything anymore other than telling the truth. it's certainly a very intricate story. and also a true one. the truth is stranger than fiction sometimes. and it will come out. there's, you know, evidence for exactly what it was that happened. >> muller will serve as his own attorney in next week's preliminary hearing. he will likely directly question the couple he's accused of terrorizing but he says he doesn't want to cause them any more pain. we posted the entire interview on nbcbayarea.com. you can find it on the front page or watch tonight for more highlights from that conversation. rescue crews from the bay area continue to help people from flooded communities in the aftermath of hurricane florence. now, here's new video this hour for you.

>> pretty gladdflooded out here >> this is new video of task force 4. this is a team from oakland evacuating people from the flood zone. they're working together with the fbi and the national guard in sampson county, north carolina. state officials warn that more flooding is expected. florence is responsible for at least 35 deaths. we have quite the opposite case around the bay area with the dry conditions. you look at the commute, nice sis drive. south bay, no problems. just your slight build. gentle for a thursday. the issue is coming off the east bay. this is a big issue that's been my concern for the last 20 minutes. west 92 is starting to see these sensors improve. they've cleared all lanes. the big rig and suv involved in the crash are out of the lanes. i think the big rig is still in a shortstop lane causing a distraction for people out of

the distance. still activity mid-span causing more distractions. we continue to follow breaking news. we were talking about that cliff rescue going on this morning. within the last half hour at ft. mason, great news to report. fast action by the san francisco fire department rescue team in that boat, they rescued both people off the cliff. there was also one person in the water. that person has been rescued as well. taken to the hospital. we don't know anyone's condition at this point. we do know at least the people that were rescued off the cliff are in stable condition right now. no doubt, they are checking them out. quick action this morning by san francisco fire department and search teams there in the water by ft. mason this morning doing an early morning cliff rescue and rescuing someone from the water as well. 6:46 right now. this is a dog owner's woergs nightmare. luckily a patrol officer in arizona was able to stop a man from driving off with his dog still tied to the back of his car. the video is very shocking but

you have to know now, the dog is okay. a man was driving his semitruck. he was pulling out of a gas station. he was headed for the interstate. now, look at the back of the truck there. we highlight it. there's a dog attached to the end. the dog's trying to run. the officer immediately saw it,. the driver very appreciative to the officer. news this morning, doctors who are on probation cannot hide that fact any more. >> new law requires this em to notify their patients. california became the first state to pass this law. the governor signed it yesterday. it's meant to inform patients if their doctor has committed sexual misconduct or other wrongdoings. there are some ways people can find that information online but now doctors will have to reveal it directly to their patients. that law takes effect next july. money-saving options are out there for prescription drugs but

pharmacists are most likely not telling you about those deals because the law puts it in the hand of insurance companies. that means pharmacists are limited in notifying patients when the drugs they're getting are cheaper if paying in cash, as opposed to using your insurance. many believe insurance companies are profiting from this law. >> they had two drugs, which one did i want? one was $86, the other was $5. i said, well, what's the difference? they said, they're identical. i said, i think i'll go with the $5 drug. why couldn't they make that decision for me? they're not allowed to. >> congress is working on new measures to change this law. the president, president trump, saying he supports pharmacists sharing more information. 6:48 right now. amazon is expanding its grocery stores with no cashiers. >> the automated grocery stores promise no lines, no checkouts, want even any registers. shoppers scan their amazon go app when you walk in the store

so, our temperatures there will be warm wither as well. let's h out the door for a run this morning. it's going to be in the low 50s through about 8:00. then looking at sunshine and quickly warming temperatures by later on today. you'll j w out the door for school this morning in martinez, we go from 56 degreesnway to scy the time that last school bell rings. our inland valleys will see temperatures ramp up pretty fast. we're heading up to 94 degrees in livermore. antioch, 95 degrees. 91 today in napa. that seven-day forecast shows there won't be much of a cooldown over the next few days. we start out with some clear skies. grab a jacket for these cool temperatures for the early hours. but then the rest of the day you'll be comfortable with sleeveless shirt or shorts and also making sure that you stay cool with these hotter temperatures. our temperatures peak today, reaching into the mid-90s.

we'll have some lower 90s in the rest of the forecast. still, well above normal temperatures. san francisco, staying a lot more comfortable with some upper 60s and low 70s through the forecast. mike is helping you choose which bridge to take to work. >> very iman mateo bridge. westbound still slow. you still see flashing lights right weth still have one set i service lane. that's a distraction. they're still helping out. i think a big rig isould o. they can't move it because of an actual problem there. it's out of lanes. we see continued improvement for the san mateo bridge as we compare the bridges. we've seen 92 go from 40 minutes to 32 minutes. you have about a 20, 25-minute delay compared to what you might expect. more traffic shifts up to the bay bridge and down to the dumbarton bridge. 92 has lanes cleared. now all three bridges may be about the same if you have to adjust your drive time as well.

i think the dumbarton bridge, if you can choose between the two in the morning, 84 would be a much better drive. the traffic eases up into union city. just fine on the menlo park side. meanwhile, the pushing through and getting up into santa clara, cupertino for more traffic flow. no surprises. the peninsula moving at speed. getting from the bay bridge, we had a couple of earlier crashes on the berkeley cleared. tho things start to slow down as we back up to the toll plaza. coming up, breaking news we've been following out of san francisco. >> people stranded in the water during a cliff rescue. nbc bay area sky ranger just got overhead moments ago. we'll let the pilot get a better shot for you. we'll tell you what we know coming up next. first, happening now, two
