today, monday, september 24th, 2018. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. >> good morning, everybody, welcome too "today." thank you for being with us on a monday morning. is there crying in golf because i think a lot of people felt a little teary. there's tiger woods on that triumphant walk. >> you watch the crowds, this looks more like some other sport like they're rushing the field in football. this is tiger woods. i think joel's nose is still stuck to the television. he didn't want to leave during any of it. our top story we start in washington, new allegations against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh, throwing his confirmation process further into turmoil and uncertainty. in a moment we're going to speak to one of the reporters who broke the story of kavanaugh's second accuser. first let's get right to peter

alexander who is with us covering the u.n. general assembly that has brought world leaders to this city but the walk in washington is about what's happening with the supreme court. >> now the talk around the count country. this morning days before brett kavanaugh was set to defend himself against an allegation that he assaulted a classmate back in high school, a new allegation of sexual misconduct from his college years surfacing overnight. it's an accusation that kavanaugh and the white house are vigorously denying, a warning some of the language in this report is graphic. new overnight another bombshell allegation against president trump's supreme court pick, brett kavanaugh. this time from 53-year-old deborah ramirez. telling "the new yorker" during a drunken dorm roam party in 1983 or '84 when she and kavanaugh were freshmen kavanaugh exposed himself to her. ramirez who acknowledges she had been drinking to the point of being foggy and slurring her words say i remember genitals
7:04 am
being in front of my face, i knew that's not what i wanted. ramirez says she pushed the man away saying i was embarrassed and ashamed and humiliated. she says she remembers kavanaugh next to her pulling up her pants, brett was laughing, i can still see his face. ramirez said somebody yelled down the hall brett kavanaugh put his nays in debbie's face. i remember hearing and being mortified that this was out there. "the new yorker" reports that two of the male classmates who ramirez alleged were involved and the wife of the third all dispute ramirez's account as does kavanaugh who said in a new statement overnight this alleged event from 35 years ago did not happen. the people who knew me then know that this did not happen and have said so. this is a smear, plain and simple. ramirez and her attorney have not responded to nbc news's request for comment. nbc news has learned that president trump had two conversations sunday about the new allegation before it became public.
7:05 am
according to a source familiar with the confirmation process, and the president expressed no change in his views about kavanaugh. the president again expressing support for kavanaugh, this morning at the u.n. >> in my opinion it's totally political. it is totally political. thank you. >> reporter: during his confirmation hearing this month kavanaugh was pressed under oath. >> since you became a legal adult have you ever made unwanted requests for sexual favors or committed any verbal or physical harassment or assault of a sexual nature? >> no. >> reporter: the latest allegation comes just hours after christine blasey ford who accused kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were both in high school agreed to testify this thursday. the senate judiciary committee saying ford will testify first, with two of her lawyers present, followed by kavanaugh who vigorously denies ford's allegation. still unresolved whether republican senators will ask questions or rely on an outside lawyer to do so. overnight the committee's top

democrat dianne feinstein tweeting, thursday's hearing should be canceled in light of a disturbing new allegation of sexual misconduct against brett kavanaugh. insisting the fbi must investigate all allegations. so several new developments overnight, the committee also says it's reached out to attorney michael avenatti who tweeted i represent a woman with credible information regarding judge kavanaugh and mark judge one of kavanaugh's high school classmates. we will be demanding the opportunity to present testimony to the committee and will like wise be demanding that judge and others be subpoenaed to testify. avenatti would clarify, my client is not deborah ramirez. there's still more out there. back to you. >> peter, thank you so much. we turn now to jane mayer "the new yorker's" chief washington correspondent, she broke this story along with ronan farrow. good to talk to you. >> great to talk to you. >> i guess the first question is people are probably sitting at home thinking, wait a minute, this just came out now.
7:07 am
why does deborah ramirez decide to speak out at this revel tifl late date. >> the story broke overnight but it states back 35 years. people remember at the time who were a classmate at yale remembers this, he heard it that night, i think, right after it or the next day, and she didn't come forward with it.at happens at yale were talking to each other about t they were e-mailing about t we've seen the e-mails back in july before christine blasey ford came forward, and eventually sort of the word of it spread, it spread to the senate, it spread to the media and we at the new yorker, ronan farrow, my partner and co-author on the story reached out to her and she decided after giving it really careful consideration for six days she decided to talk to him about it and that's -- that's how this sorry came out. it looks like it's overnight, it actually goes back 35 years really. >> jane, does she to your

knowledge want to testify if given an opportunity? >> what she wants right now is to bring in the fbi. she thinks that they need to interview the people who were to her belief at the party. there are at least two of the males who were at the party signed a letter saying it never happened and that they support judge kavanaugh and she feels disappointed and kind of betrayed by them and she'd like them to say that to the fbi under oath. >> what's clear, jane, from your reporting is that deborah ramirez was rather candid about her own questions about her own memory, obviously her own sobriety at this college party and she was very straightforward about that. the white house has zeroed in on a story actually in the "new york times" about this same matter, it says the times had -- this is what "the new york times" story had, the times had interviewed several dozen people over the f. past week in an

attempt to corroborate her story and could find no one with firsthand knowledge. reading the tea leaves of your own story it doesn't seem to me that the new yorker found anyone with firsthand knowledge, either. is there corroboration? >> i mean, you know, you don't have to read tea leaves. we're right out front about it in there saying we found no eyewitnesses who who would confirm t we found somebody who remembers hearing about it that night or the next day, unlike the people at the party, he was very sober and remains very distinguished person, his own background, i asked him myself are you sure this was brett kavanaugh that you heard about? he said, i am 100% sure. >> and lastly, jane, in the world we live in a lot of people always suspect there could be a political hit job going on. how much was this not wanting to see a conservative justice on the supreme court?
7:10 am
>> well, she says she's not. she's a registered democrat. but we also talked to someone who would defend him. and i asked her, do you know deborah ramirez? and i said, do you think politics was a motivation? and she said no. and that's who she is pointing to. who she is pointing to. >> so happy to be with you. tensions are egscalating after a bombshell report that the deputy attorney general privately discussed removing th

7:12 am
>> just look at what is being exposed in our department of justice and the fbi. look at what's going on. >> reporter: rosenstein denies the account. saying "the new york times" is inaccurate and factually incorrect. adding, i have never pursued or authorized recording the president. some republicans, including lindsey graham, are using the new story to call for a special counsel, to look at alleged lying in the department of justice. >> there's a coup against president trump. >> reporter: all this while cabinet officials were asked if they thought about removing the president from office. >> i never heard that.
