with that, right, if they see it or see it happening and how to express your feelings. >> reporter: recognizing the issues, santa clara county education leaders sent this letter to all 31 superintendents, urging them to lead conversations and create a culture of open dialogue within our schools and communities about safe and healthy relationships, proper conduct, investigations, and reporting structures. >> that it would be important to raise some awareness and work with our school districts to make sure that they're ready to help any child and family feel safe in our schools and in our community. >> reporter: an effort parents agree with, including one who thinks kids in this day of the me too movement are more open to discuss tough topics. >> i think they also need to know, you know, that it's getting better, and with their generation, it will get even better and you know, the more we talk about it and the more discussions are had, the more likely that's going to happen. >> reporter: in san jose, ian cole, "nbc bay area news."

>> 4:33 right now. >> a new video this morning of a car crash in the south bay. our overnight photographer spotted this, an overturned car just off of 880 and first street in san jose. chp is telling us that someone got out and ran away. no other details just yet. new video is being released of what led to a high-profile attack on b.a.r.t. more than a year ago. dozens of young people barrelling through the oakland coliseum b.a.r.t. station without paying. three of those people arrested and accused of taking part in a mob-style attack. the whole incident led to policy changes and new safety measures at b.a.r.t. and that includes nearly $7 million in federal grant money with the majority being spent on security cameras. it's an ongoing problem for a south bay little league. parents saying that it's overrun by homeless people. >> and hanging around like it's their park. it's all of our parks and i want the kids to feel safe here.

>> san jose spartan little league says the homeless are leaving the tully community battlefield littered with trash and feces. the parents say that their kids are too scared to play baseball so yesterday councilmember tam wen held a town hall. he wanted to hear from homeless advocates and little league parents so they could work toward a solution together. happening today, you might see oakland teachers protesting, locked in a bitter contract talk right now. organizers say those protests will start at the end of the regular school day starting at 3:30. teachers are planning to rally outside several schools which include oakland international high school and east oakland encompass academy. people are suffering serious crossing railroad tracks. amtrak and the police department are teaming up to promote railroad safety. they say the problem is people have a difficult time judging fast-approaching trains.

they're launching a program called operation clear track. as part of the program, local police officers will visit amtrak stations and pass out educational materials on railroad safety. you'll probably see register to vote posts all over your twitter and facebook feeds today. it's national voter registration day. have you registered yet? if you haven't, you can find booths like these in san francisco. educational pop-up events will help people register in several neighborhoods throughout the city. oakland is holding its own get out the vote rally. coming up here on "today in the bay," walmart is taking new steps to help you quickly check if the food in your refrigerator is contaminated or recalled. plus shopping on snapchat, the company teaming up with retail giant on a new way to help you spend your cash on your favorite goodies. we'll show you how it works, coming up next. you're watching "today in the bay." you could generate your own energy,

a two-day meeting, widely expected to hike interest rates tomorrow. the dow dropping almost 200 points yesterday to 26,562, while the nasdaq closed up six points to 7993. walmart is hoping technology can set shoppers minds at ease following several outbreaks of food borne illnesses. the retail giant is telling its produce suppliers to use a blockchain system to track shipments. the secure ledger will help trace vegetables from the farm to the store revealing the potential source of any outbreak in seconds rather than days. eventually the future you could scan a bag and use the technology to find out where your lettuce came from and snapchat is testing a new camera feature. youca object or bar code with the camera that brings up a card showing the item and the price and availability. when you tap on that you'll be sent to amazon's app or website to make the purchase. the feature is currently available to a small number of users in the u.s. but should get

>> oh, they're having a tough go at it. >> we're pushing for them. we have the orange on today. >> changing up their staff, too, so we'll see what's going on with that now. we're starting out with a busy morning across the bay area. it's tuesday, already a lot of people out rolling on the roads in san jose, and it is a spare the air alert today. so if you can, catch public transit, carpool. i know it's early, call somebody up, see if you can roll with them and our air quality is going to be unhealthy today for the inland parts of the east bay, as well as santa clara valley, so heads up about that, especially if you have breathing problems. it's a day where you do want to limit air time outside. as we look at our diridon station forecast headed through the 6:00 hour we'll be at 64 degrees. it's going to be a cool st start and then here is that live look outside from at&t park, with our game later on this evening. first pitch is only going to be 58 degrees. it's going to be pretty chilly out here, and at least skies

will be mostly clear throughout the game and as you start out this morning, as you're getting dressed, it's a day where you do need a sweater or a light jacket to start and then a t-shirt for the rest of the day. also some shorts to keep you cool. our inland valleys are really going to be heating up today and some flip-flops are sandals comfortable as well. as we look at our forecast, our temperatures are going up even more over yesterday, reaching up to 96 degrees in concord. napa 90 degrees and 70 in san francisco. not bad there, palo alto 86 and 89 in san jose i'm looking at the weather happening all the way in japan this morning, because we're going to see the potential of a connection of some moisture moving in, and that could bring us a slight chance of rain for early next week. it's been so long since we've had significant rain since apri 16th, and here we go, it's in the forecast for monday. meantime, we are dealing with some really hot weather and

looking at some upper 90s for tomorrow. i imagine it's going to be another spare the air day, and then our temperatures drop off quickly as a trough drops in, it brings us some cooler temperatures, a few more clouds for the weekend, and that chance of rain on monday, especially for parts of the north bay and the coastal areas, and of course, we'll have more updates on that and san francisco heating up to 73, and then cooling off over the next few days. mike, it's looking like we're easing into that tuesday commute. >> easing in. we're slowly building. so the south bay and peninsula have no problems. nothing unexpected. watch for those crews as they pick up their cones in various spots around the bay. no full closures exceptghway 1 u use oceania or san francisco. i've been tweeting out that information with maps as well. over here the altamont pass shows you typical slowing as you build the

>> reporter: the alameda county narcotics detective experienced an accidental drug overdose in that motel room. turns out he inhaled a trace amount of fentanyl in the air, that's a synthetic opioid that's 50 times more potent than heroin. just a tiny bit of the stuff could be lethal. right away he knew something was wrong. he recalls the harrowing moments when the drug took over his body been. >> my lips were tingling, my nose was burning. i decided i got to go out and get some air because i felt something wasn't right. >> reporter: what di up right now. my whole body was starting to shut down. >> rte sn after, he wasunnscious managed to bring him back with an antidote they were carrying. the detective's plea to all law enforcement in the bay area, why he says a new drug-fighting tool is now just as important for keeping officers safe as their guns and bullet proof vests.
