a few folks waiting in the cash lanes. they'll clear out in five, ten minutes and in 20 minutes or so we'll see the metering lights. we'll talk about fremont street where there's a closure coming up. back to you. >> thank you, mike. it's 5:01. happening today, an historic hearing on capitol hill. supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh and palo alto professor dr. christine blasy ford, who is accusing kavanaugh of attempted rape will testimony in about two hours. >> question want to go to tracie potts live today. a lot of people will be watching this, especially a lot in the bay area with the relation to the story. >> reporter: exactly. they'll be hearing that story in detail. we already heard part of it in the opening statement that was released in advance. we know in part what dr. christine blasy ford will have to say about her attack and about why she didn't talk about it for so long.

headed into today's hearing there are now five accusations against supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. he denies them all. two came anonymously to republicans. in interviews with lawmakers this week, kavanaugh said he was never even there. >> this is getting into the twilight zone. you're talking about brett kavanaugh being a serial rapist during high school. >> reporter: in a sworn statement julie swetnick claims kavanaugh fondled women. >> no one has gone to the police to report those allegations. it's truly outrageous. >> reporter: in her opening statements, christine blasy ford will tell the senate judiciary committee, i thought brett was accidentally going to kill me when he allegedly attacked her. >> i do want to hear what she says. maybe she'll say -- i could be convinced of anything. >> reporter: kavanaugh will admit he drank too much in high school and did things that now

make him cringe, but nothing like this. both will be questioned by veteran sex crimes attorney rachel mitchell, brought in by republicans. >> the republicans are fooling themselves if they can hire a person for one day to hide behind, because they're too afraid to question dr. ford themselves. >> reporter: republicans accuse democrats of an orchestrated smear campaign. but the president is standing by his nominee, saying his own experience with sexual assault, sexual misconduct allegations has him thinking these allegations are false. but he said he'd be watching today, as will a lot of people, including here in the bay area. >> we learn something every day. thank you. >> we'll have much more on the hearing coming up, including bay-area rallies and protests

planned. be sure to stay with us. we'll bring the hearing live. lester holt starts at 6:30 a.m. 5:03. you can expect another long day in traffic if you commute through the downtown area of san francisco. the new transbay transit it's center is closed until next week. a second crack found and now engineers are looking for a fix. >> let's check in with "today in the bay" pete checking the bay all morning. >> reporter: good morning. it looks like this will be the new normal through next week as they try to fix that issue at the salesforce transit center with cracked beams. we're on fremont street. it's not too bad but it will pick up as this area is closed as a result of what's taking place at the transit center. that closure will be on fremont

street between howard and mission streets. it goes back to those cracked steel beams. we'll show our viewers pictures of those beams. they closed this transit center on tuesday because engineers found at least one of those cracked steel beams. upon further inspection they found two of them in the same structure, which is a key part of the structure, according to officials. what all this means, as i mentioned, a closure at fremont street where we're standing between howard and mission. for bus riders that were depending on the salesforce transit center, they'll have to go back to the temporary bus terminal and, of course, a lot of unanswered questions as to why this happened. >> supports the roof and spans fremont street, holding up fremont street, the bridge over fremont street. >> get it done right so we can get back to normal and a more efficient service. >> the cost of operating it is more than it's bringing in in rent. right now that thing is a white

elephant. >> reporter: now, our investigative unit found out those steel beams were produced by the herritt corporation out of southern california and these beams are massive and can be risky because of its size, it can hide i guess regulrregulari that steel. for now, pete suratos, "today in the bay." chp is investigating an apparent road rage incident in the south bay that left a uber driver hurt. the chp says that uber driver got into an altercation with the driver of another car. they say it's possible the driver of the third car accidentally told him to pull over and that's when things turned violent. >> the victim was either cut or stabbed with some type of sharp

object. >> officers say the attacker also kicked the uber driver while he was on the ground. they're hoping someone may have dash cam video showing that incident. happening today, a new honor commemorating the legacy of san francisco mayor lee. city leaders are renaming the chinese education center as edwin and anita lee newcomer school. it's located near portsmouth scare. it's a transitional school for chinese immigrant students. lee died of a heart attack nine months ago. some may argue san jose is about to get more glitzy. others not so much. city council members approved a proposal allowing electronic billboards. the decision lifts what had been a decades' old ban. they say electronic ads will bring in $200,000 annually. opponents, including the mayor,

called it an eye sore waiting to happen. he was one of two council members who voted against the plan. a study shows renters in san francisco are changing. more middle class renters are demanding housing, according to apartments.com. the number of middle class tenants are growing faster than luxury property renters but asking prices in the city have also increased. prices have gone up 3.5% in the past year. the average price for an apartment in the city is around $3,000. that makes san francisco the most expensive city in the country for renters. new this morning, it's a boy. the safari west zoo in sonoma county welcomes this cute little boy. he was born at the beginning of the month and latching onto mom ever since. they are plenty of these monkeys in africa but this furry one

three times next year. jay powell says the u.s. economy is strong and growth and healthy. bank stocks led those declines lower. on today's watch list, reports on unemployment, durable goods, pending home sales and second quarter gdp. the dow falling 106 points yesterday while the nasdaq is down 17. amazon today opening a physical story in new york city. it will sell toys, home goods and other products but they all have to have at least a four-star rating on the amazon website. customers will be able to try out echo speakers, kindle and other amazon products. this is the company's latest push into the turf much their rivals like target who have been courting urban shoppers with smaller format stores. happy hour continues at starbucks. the coffee chain is offering a buy one, get one free deal from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at participating stores. you buy a handcrafted espresso, frappuccino, grande or larger, you get one for free.

norel warm day across the area. ridge of high pressure that's been keeping us real warm, above seasonal all week long, there hold on for one more afternoon and it will steer away from us. let's talk about your predicted highs. concord, 93 degrees. san jose, 86. east bay, 76. if you're heading out to the city or anywhere along the coastline, it will get chillier as we head into the afternoon. because we still have that ridge of high pressure and because we are still very dry, we will see the elevated fire danger, especially for interior valleys. now, we do have our own doppler radar running on top of san bruno mountain. we are tracking not one but two systems expected to make their arrival. the first showing its peak on saturday at 4:35 a.m.

only parts of the north bay we'll see a spotty chance through santa rosa, possibly napa. if i fast forward that timeline, you can see it might creep into santa rosa but we're expecting dry conditions. we have a second system. this is the one that's really going to come into play as we head in towards monday afternoon. check out our rain chances here. it's still a futurecast and our models are in disagreeance a little bit so the timing and intensity of this system can change in terms of how much rainfall we're expecting. that second system is expected to bring decent rainfall total for the north bay, possibly a quarter or more. and i think we definitely need it after very dry couple of past months. let's send things over to mike. >> months of dry weather. we're looking forward to the change. it will likely affect your

they're trying to meter traffic getting into san francisco because of that fremont closure by the transit center. we'll talk about that in more detail coming up in the next report. i wanted to show you the rest of your commute, both sides of the bay and south bay operating smoothly with that build out of the altima. palo alto's christine blasey ford will take center stage on capitol hill today to testify that supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh sexually assaulted her. that hearing gets under way in 90 minutes. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us from city hall. there was a lot of local support for her. >> reporter: there is. when folks gather here at palo alto city hall at 11:30, we may already know how christine blasey ford responds to questions about the alleged sexual assault and how brett kavanaugh responds as well, and all of it under oath. one week ago, you might remember i was reporting on a huge banner flying over palo alto for hours

with the message, thank you, christine. we believe you. other rallies, large and small, have followed all around the bay area. today in addition to this rally in palo alto city hall, others will be gathering at montgomery and market streets at noon and federal and clay streets in oakland. undoubtedly, one of the questions dr. ford will be asked is why she didn't tell her parents or the police about that alleged sexual assault by kavanaugh at the time it happened back in high school or any time since then. a new berkeley survey may shed light on that. 32% of people who answered they feared poor treatment or no action. 49% feared they would be blamed for what happened and 27% concerned about confidentiality. these don't add up to 100% because those victims often have more than one reason for not coming forward. the hearings began in just an hour and a half.

i think it's safe to say, the nation will be watching. in palo alto, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> you can watch it right here on nbc bay area starting at 6:30. 5:33. police searching for at least two gunmen who exchange fire. this is between two cars. this happened around 8:30 on l alvarado. one car crashed into bank of america building there. no one was hurt in the shooting or the crash. no word on what sparked that shooting. a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman in the south bay is sitting in jail. san jose police say oscar escobar seen here attacked a woman as she was walking her dog near commadore park. her description helped create a sketch and police found him. they took him into custody a day after the attack. safety on b.a.r.t. is a big concern. you've probably seen all of

those stories about violence and robberies. b.a.r.t.'s board of directors will meet today to figure out just how to make the transit system safer for riders. >> we're joined live outside the b.a.r.t. station in fremont this morning. what are some of the proposals out there? >> reporter: one of b.a.r.t.'s so-called safety and security plan the agency wants to do a number of things, including improve police presence, improving surveillance system and deter invaders. it comes after three people were recently murdered on the transit system, including 17-year-old wilson, who was stabbed at the b.a.r.t. station in oakland in late july. her family believes her killer was a fare evader. tonight the board will discuss whether to replace the gates. also, what can be done to

improve b.a.r.t.'s proof of payment system. the b.a.r.t.'s police of chief will report on recommendations on how to better, adequately improve his system. we talked about a b.a.r.t. ambassador program, which will have ambassadors to de-escalate situations. take a look at your tv screen. tonight's b.a.r.t. meeting is at 5:00 at pittsburg city hall. the town of pittsburg. it will be held there in an attempt to reach more people of the public who might not be able to make the regular meetings at b.a.r.t. headquarters in downtown oakland. reporting live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> good to know. 5:36. we have been telling you about those thieves storming apple stores, stealing phones, laptops and even ipads. this morning some of those alleged thieves are in jail. this is video from over the

weekend when crooks hit a store in santa rosa. the department of justice is expected to release more information about those arrests. several people were taken into custody in oakland on tuesday night. happening today, residents of hope village will begin relocating to an empty city-owned lot near the san jose airport. we've been following this story of hope village for weeks now after tent community there was shut down because it was on state land. earlier this week, county supervisors approved a deal to lease the city-owned land. hope village will stay open as part of a six-month pilot program. it's 5:37 right now. sax m sacramento is doing its part to help the homeless. governor brown signed a law streamlining the process to help housing projects. it's expected to lead to more housing options state wide. it takes effect in january. the a's fans, they're dreaming of that wild card game at the coliseum. waking up this morning, i'd say,

marine layer that's really starting to build bringing some fog to san francisco. you can see it right through this area. as far as 24-hour temperature change from the last 24 hours, no major differences in terms of that. but let's talk about your microclimate highs for today. again, this is going to be your last chance to kind of hold onto those 90s and 80s. if you enjoy them, that is. we'll finally start creeping into more fall-like weather for the weekend. san jose for it the day, 64 degrees. 74 for oakland. warmer for the interior valleys. this is going to kind of keep that threat of elevated fire danger as we head in towards the evening hours. some breezy conditions along the coast. we do have our very own stormranger on top of san bruno mountain in anticipation of an incoming system that's expected to make its first arrival, one of two systems, on saturday morning. let's talk about that. hot temps inland for today. as we head in towards saturday and sunday, we get this upper low. that's just a bit weak. it looks like it might bring scattered, spotty chances to the

north bay for saturday morning and sunday morning. if i fast forward this into monday, we have a second upper level low and that system is expected to bring a good amount of rainfall for the interior parts of the bay area down through the south bay as well. let's talk about some model data. they're starting to become better aligned. the gps model is showing us about a quarter of an inch in terms of rainfall totals as we head into the second system. let me show you what our second model shows us. our euro model is showing us a bit more, just above a quarter of an inch as we head in towards monday and tuesday. the majority of that rain looks like it will be sticking to the north bay. that still has a good chance of showering down to the south bay, even though as we know, san jose sits in that rain shadow. the next seven days, major drop in temperatures. >> i'll take that drop in temperatures for sure. in san jose, we talked about that crash off 880.

as we take a look, we saw mostly green all over the bay. a gentle build for 101, typical spot there. we may see a little slowing but 237 westbound off 880 is fine until you get to zancker where the crash is. chp hasn't confirmed any axe deputy yet. we'll track that. meanwhile, we talked about slowing off 288 and hayward. no problem for concord, walnut creek. remember, the bay bridge will slow down, from treasure island to fremont street. we have one lane closed at the off-ramp and folks loop back around into the closure and that caused all the congestion yesterday and it will continue because fremont street is closed under that overpass there at the transit center. that continues. pete is on that story. we're following the latest on our website and twitter.

tightening of those races. in the governor's campaign, john cox slashed gavin newsom's lead in half. for the senate race, dianne feinstein leads 40% to 29% over kevin de lleon. stephen stock has been digging into a problem for six months. here's a look at his investigation. the battle revolves around a technology that's been around for decades but only recently been used to prevent local gun crime. it's called nibin, national integrated ballistics information network, run by the atf. our investigation found that none of california's state-run crime labs uses nibin, leaving huge gaps in crime data that

could be costing lives or preventing crimes from being solved. we went to orange county to demonstrate one of the most obvious cases of this disparity. here's an example of how inconsistent the current status quo is. if you got shot right here on this side of the street, any evidence in your shooting would go to the national nibin database. why? san sta anna police, located right behind me, uses the nibin system. walk across the street and just a block away, where orange county's crime lab is located, and that evidence would go to an entirely different database that doesn't connect nor communicate with the national system. you see, the crime lab there in the distance. because orange county's crime lab doesn't use nibin. nibin supporters say that means gunmen responsible for multiple shootings sometimes aren't getting caught because police in different departments simply don't know it's the same gun being used again and again and again. even so, a bill requiring
