good morning welcome to wednesday morning. halfway through the workweek. a live look outside this time from the south bay overlooking san jose. not a lot of people coming and going. it is still early. just turning fi ining 5:00 righ. good morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm mike washington. we want to talk about the rain, kari, hitting the south bay you say? >> yeah. areas that didn't see it yesterday will have that chance today. as we look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, the red scan you see. as we zoom in to the peninsula in the south bay we can see spotty showers. not all of us are seeing rain. you just heard it hitting the windows in evergreen and now it's moving towards the north and east and as we go through the day we're going to see rain chances in the forecast. as our highs head into the 70s across the bay area. a closer look at forecast coming up. mike, you spotted a puddle. >> i did. i'm on puddle watch, kari.

over here, remnants of yesterday. here comes one car. see if that's affected by the pud's? it is not. drive on the richmond side of the rich smnd/san rafael bridge, left overfrom yesterday, hitting the north bay. no problem. easy drive. road conditions great through cocoa county. debris reported for 24 just off the walnut creek interchange. no lanes blocked. might see a crew. and what kari talked about here, rain most recently near 680. not a problem. although a crash reported now around milpitas, 880 at 237. i'll check on the latest from chp. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:01 and we're keeping a close eye on washington, d.c. this morning, because there are reports that the fbi could end its investigation into brett kavanaugh soon. >> "today in the bay" tracie potts joins us live from washington. something else people are talking about this morning.

president trump mocking testimony from palo alto's dr. ford? >> reporter: and getting some support from former president george w. bush. a spokesperson for president bush saying wasn't mocking, pointing out inconsistencies in her statement. we'll show you exactly what the president said so you can decide for yourself, but as for that fbi investigation, yes. we are now getting indications from a couple of people familiar with the investigation that they could wrap it up a few days early. sources are telling nbc the fbi could end its investigation of sexual misconduct allegations against judge brett kavanaugh days ahead of schedule. without interviewing his accuser dr. kristine blasey ford. president trump mocking ford's testimony at a rally last night in mississippi. >> how did you get home? i don't remember. mow did you get there? i don't remember. where was the place? i don't remember. how many years ago i don't.

but i had one beer. that's all i remember. >> reporter: calling it a soulless attack as they await the fbi's report. >> as quickly as they can but used as another reason for delay. i can tell you that. >> reporter: republicans insist on a vote this week. that process would have to start today. >> what we need to do is wait for the fbi. >> reporter: lawmakers anxious to compare the fbi's findings to kavanaugh's testimony. >> if you say, well, maybe he's telling the truth and maybe he's not, he doesn't belong on the supreme court. >> reporter: we've confirmed at least four people interviewed so far. dr. ford's attorneys write, it's inconceivable to end this investigation without talking to the woman who started it all. but then there are people who are supporting judge kavanaugh saying it's inconceivable to them that this investigation is even happening thinking this should have happened a long time

and now at least are or track to get it done by end of the week. that's the plan and what republican leadership is moving towards. >> thank you, reporting from washington. dr. ford's testimony in front of the senate judiciary committee making impact around the world. the city is honoring dr. ford with a proclamation for inspiring victims of sexual assault to come forward. palo alto's mayor since shared her own stories of assault citing the courage of dr. ford. people in the tri-valley rocked this week with the word of an apparent overdose death of two teenagers. it's led to an urgent new warning for parents. the livermore police are telling parents to pay special attention to their teenagers. this after the death of a 16-year-old girl and 18-year-old boy. the 16-year-old overdosed monday. the 18-year-old died sunday. police suspect they died after consuming a street form of xanax

campaigning a powerful opioid. scott adams is creator of the popular comic strip "dilbert" and he became emotional talking about what happened. >> he died last night, or maybe early in the morning yesterday, we're not sure, in his bed. >> authorities are trying to figure out where the teens got the drugs, and if the cases are linked. a 33-year-old cold case murder in contra costa county is served using a technique never used successful in the bay area. using dna collected from a crime scene. 57-year-old virginia vincent found raped and murdered in her danville apartment back in 1985. her killer never found. 16 years ago a dna profile was made from the evidence and the case went cold again. then last year the share eriffs office used that meth and tied joey ford to the crime.

he was a plumber in that area who died 20 years ago. always talk about the president tweeting. expect a text from him today. it's actually fema testing a new way to notify americans across the country in the event of an emergency called a presidential alert, and anyone with a cell phone is going to get one of these alerts this morning. this is around 11:18 our time. it reads presidential alert. this is a test. no action is required. it's supposed to push out a few weeks ago but delayed because of severe weather on the east coast. more details for you today. tests coming in the wake of national attention. focused on how emergency alerts are sent. sometimes the system has fallen tragically short and as you probably recall as our own nbc bay area investigates unit uncovered, sonoma county's system failed during the deadly firestorm last year. the county recently rolled out a new overhauled alert system.

and just in to our newsroom at 5:06, a popular north bay brewing company laying off employees. curting 12% of its workforce. 100 of the companies 900 employees let go. the petaluma brewer says the decision to downsize is due to declining sales and more competitors entering the market. guess what's sailing back into the bay area? "lady washington." no relation here. we love when the historical tall ships visit from washington state. a boat docking at pillar point marina in half moon bay and starting at 4:00 this morning, you can actually hop onboard and take a tour. that ship will be docked there through sunday for all of those nice tours. >> "lady washington." right now we want to give you a live look.

heavier downpours heading towards the north bay. may have been awakened by thunder and heavy downpours. that's were quieted down. maybe you can get a little sleep now. radar shows spotty rain mostly for the peninsula in the south bay and parts of the east bay and areas we didn't see rain yesterday, it's mostly light, though, as you head ot for your drive this morning. just enough to wet the streets. if you're on your way to deerdon station in san jose, temperatures will be in the 60s and partly to mostly cloudy skies. at any point today there could be water dropping from the sky. be prepared for that. otherwise a mix of sun and clouds and walnut creek, the temperature reach into the 70s. mike, you looked at the san mateo bridge? >> kari, you talked about that phenomena, water falling from the sky yesterday at the north bay. not an issue this morning. on the peninsula side, san mateo bridge, radar activity.

tim cook says apple takes data privacy very seriously. in an interview with vice news on hbo, cook says he'd be open to some form of government regulation saying apple isn't in the business of selling users' data to third parties and tries to collect as little as possible. apple continues to roll out new tools to make it harder for others to access your data. its updated it's privacy policy to require all apps to disclose how your information will be used. and endless shrimp are okay, but red lobster says no to plastic straws. the chain joining starbucks, american airline and others in getting rid of the straws. customers have to ask their servers for one. they plan to phase them out by end of 2020 and replace them with an eco-friendly alternative. the company emphasizes the shift will eliminate more than 150 million plastic straw as year from its more than 700 locations. you asked about the cheddar

it's mostly sprinkling on 280 and 101. we head to the south bay. a couple of sprinkles earlier and about 30 minutes, it's cleared. head up towards the east, we see rain falling around union city and freemont, but once again, light rain. turn on the windshield wipers and getting kids ready for school in antioch, partly cloudy. temperatures mid-60s, heading to the mid-70s today and partly to mostly cloudy skies. the rain so hit or miss. a look how the futurecast plots it today. we will see some rain at times, and it could be anywhere across the bay area. even the north bay where you're trying to take a break from the heavy downpours, but we will have a better chance of rain for the south bay and the east bay. these areas that missed out on the rain yesterday, and at 3:00 in the afternoon, we could really start to see the activity firing up. with eve an slight chance of thunderstorms. watching out for that as we go into tonight, tapers off, but still looks like some of that

rain could hold on to the south bay and east bay by early tomorrow morning. and then clear out during the afternoon. but it still stays unsettled. getting up and ready, tell you about the factor today that's high. 70% humidity. with high humidity, put it in a ponytail and go. high humidity and times of rain. temperatures, though, comfortable with highs reaching into the mid-70s today. all across the bay area. a few upper 70s for the inland valleys. we're going to cool it off a bit tomorrow as the skies gradually clear, and then heading into the weekend, it's going to turn warmer and windy by sunday. up to 82. for san francisco, staying in the 60s. still watching for showers today. and, mike, the traffic center is on sprinkle watch. >> listen to you carefully in the traffic center as well. sprinkle watch indeed north of san francisco. got a lot of rain yesterday. today very calm. over here, kari pointed out 101,

280 in san mateo, watching for issues. so far no slowing showing up. spotted a, look bottom of the screen. suddenly the last three minutes, southbound 85 really shown a slowdown heading towards 87. no incidents reported. i'll check on that. and the road weather index showing conditions may be a little slick through the area. maybe light rain in the last few. meanwhile, highway 17 northbound around the summit, report of a crash that came into chp reportedly on the shoulder. only a couple lanes and dark there. keep that in mind. no real problems. kari showed radar basically between gilmore and san jose showing potential for slicker roadways potentially. and just because of the green weather index doesn't mean you're guaranteed slick roads. this is 101 north of 680 and it's just fine. light traffic here. reminder, of course. transbay center closed temporary

more scattered than it was yesterday when hitting the north bay. we're using storm ranger, mobile doppler radar, scanning the peninsula, there is still light rain moving through san mateo, approaching woodside and a lot of this is lifting towards the north and east. the system shifted to the south, but we're still seeing quite a bit of rain across the region, and it's going to stay unsettled today as well as part of the day tomorrow. here's how the futurecast looks. not all of us will see rain, but we have a better chance in the south bay. crossing fingers yesterday. not a lot happened. today, it may be our day. going into the afternoon, seeing some scattered showers popping up as we go into tonight as well. so i'll talk more about this and also look ahead to the weekend, but there is something unexpected at the bay bridge. mike? >> take you out there now. it's not weather. rained yesterday. this morning things are drier at the bay bridge. like right there. one cache lane, people moving

out of it at the bay because the last toll ticker not yet open for business causing a little bit of a different flow there on the approach towards the bay bridge, but so far far as the big picture goes, same thing. what we typically see with metering lights on, cocoa county looks great. and south of the san mateo bridge, kari talked about the light rain traveling through, so far not a problem or changes as far as that traffic throw and tri-valley operating normal as well. back to you. >> thank you, mike. happening now and new for you this morning, mr. is in the east bay are looking for two men who robbed four cell phone stores in less than an hour. >> aggressive. "today in the bay"s, live in continue ta costa county. an ongoal problem not only there but across the bay area? regard right. good morning, laura and marcus. the crimes are committed last night in contra costa county similar to the grab-and-go-style robberies we've heard about the

apple stores throughout the area and other cell phone stores. we put this map together. look at your tv screen to see where the crimes took place last night. the first three in concord. started around 5:40 last night. two adult men entered an at&t store. they stole a number of cell phones on display. they left and then entered the sprint store just steps away. same thing. grabbed phones. damaged displays in the process. then about 20 minutes later, now talking about the 6:00 time frame, police believe the same pair hit a third store. this is the verizon store on oak road in congress cord. you see it on your tv screen. video for you there. as police responded to that location, officers learned that their colleagues in pleasant hill were also working a grab-and-go robbery. you can see from this video, this is from the at&t store on monument boulevard. according to the police timeline, they hit that store ten minutes after hitting that last store in concord.

police are looking for two adult men. one wearing a black and white striped hoodie, the other wearing a dark hoodie. for concord police, keep in mind, still trying to solve a similar grab-and-go robbery at another store that took place in mid-september. a problem that's not new for police here. in the east bay, or throughout the bay area. reporting live in walnut creek for "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. 5:34. happening today, the man who police believe killed his ex-girlfriend and dumped her body is expected to be arraigned. authorities arrested 19-year-old anthony pinmentel. investigators believe he killed mariah davis from richmond who he dated in high school. family members reported her missing last week and say pinmentel was the last person she saw. on monday police say he led officers to a body near lake chabot dam. so far a positive identification has not been announced. when it comes to bay area

commute, pay as you go express lanes, no doubt the future. happening today, that future gets started for one busy stretch of highway. so east bay leaders will help break ground on the new 11-mile express lane for southbound 680. this stretch is from marina vista in martinez to rudd gear in walnut creek. amg the way, drivers expect plebt if lane closures and alterations there, and it will close -- it will take close to three years to complete. with that opening set for the year 2021. new for us this morning, orinda city taking new members to boost gun safety. council members voted to require gun owners to store all firearms. violators cited with an infraction as opposed to misdemeanor and the fines run up to $500. update on a story reported last week. today is the deadline to submit

an application to bring a plot of farmland into the city limits opening the door for construction of a private catholic high school. the san jose catholic diocese owns the lands and wants to build a school but the land has to be annexed to have city services. now it's up to santa clara's local agencies formation commission or lafco to protect open space and agriculture land. the commission said no in the past, the plan could get a blessing this time in part because the diocese is willing to preserve as much farmland and it develops. >> what we're offering is, we want to keep this morgan hill beautiful, and we're offering a one-to-one mitigation. for every acreage of land that we build for the children and students, we're going to reserve another acre to keep it agricultural. >> lafco will take up the issue likely at its meeting in

december. a new memorial in san francisco led to a messy breakup. happening today, supporters of the memorial plan to talk about it. now, the breakup itself involves san francisco and its sister city in japan. osaka. their 60-year relationship is severed by the mayor of osaka. it is in response to a chinatown statue honoring so-called comfort women in world war ii. supporters say comfort women were victims of the sex trafficking trade and the japanese military played a role. japan's government opposeded new shach ch statue from the start, supporters believe denies history. issuing a 30-day moratorium to take electric scoote erers o the street. you can use them now. the issue became urgent when the scooters became a big problem clulter e cluttering sidewalks about a month ago.

over in san mateo, might get damper roadways. south bay, no problems for south county, green on sensors, road weather index, live shot shows san jose 101 picking up a little volume in the drive. >> good right now. we could see spotty showers. >> off and on rain today, yeah, and as we get our way out the door trying to make it to the weekend, storm ranger, mobile doppler radar showing everything is quiet for the north bay after earlier showers and storms and then rain shifted over towards the peninsula and parts of the south and east bay. this is where we will have a chance of rain today as we head towards saturday, all of this quiets down and the inland valleys looking at highs reaching 77 degrees. 72 degrees for the bay. and for the coast, looking at highs reaching into the 60s. check out sunday's forecast. across the bay area, it's going to start to warm up just a bit and a lot more sunshine with some gusty winds as we approach

deserved to die. >> pointed out numerous problems with the ad. among them, his opponent is christian. a statement issued saying hunter lost his grip on reality. the statement refers to recent criminal charges against hunter and his wife. hunter is accused of using $250,000 in campaign funds for his own personal use. once upon a time three little bears were on the hunt for a snack in nevada. >> yeah, but found themselves in a sticky situation. they became stuck inside a garbage bin near reno sunday morning. firefighters say on facebook they woke up saturday night to the sounds of a garbage bin being tipped over. firefighters found an agitated mama beer watching over the bin. a firefighter lifted the bin so the three could escape. the three little bears ran one at a time from that bin and scurried off into the woods.

and right on 280, wet at times. going to zoom out to show you just how widespread this storm system is affecting parts of coastal california. we have it moving now a little farther south and i'll watch out for a chance of isolated thunderstorms today. we have already seen that happening across the region. as you head out for your morning drive in morgan hill, the roads may be a little wet for rain that fell earlier this morning, and it's going to drop down to about 59 degrees at 7:00 this morning. and thend ev a chance of rain, partly cloudy skies. don't forget the umbrella as you're getting dressed. affecting areas that didn't say much rain yesterday. south bay, east bay, peninsula, a chance of showers. how the day plays out on the futurecast. there will be a lot of breaks from this. we're going to see partly cloudy skies and then as we go into this afternoon and into the evening, a chance of some rain firing up. once again a slight chance of

101, 280, chance of slicker roadways. here in the south bay and east bay really hitting the hills. not a major problem for the freeways. great news for the flow. we see typical patterns, slowing through san jose. hayward and pleasanton, southbound 680. up here, concord, a slower drive for highway 4 getting into the area our pittsburg and bay point and patches puddling reported for 101 in san rafael a few puddles at the on and off ramps. keep that in mind. slowing at the bay bridge. talk about the different pattern there, but a note looking forward towards fleet week. folks, activities on the embarcadero. folks coming across the bay bridge, everybody getting here including mapping utilities. telling you get off and go past the area including fremont street to the area still closed. not all of the maps have latest updates on that particular closure. take note. harrison, loop around or stay clear of the area.
