studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody. welcome to "today." we start this morning with president trump defending his supreme court nominee at a rally overnight and going after the accuser. faceded with friday's deadline, the fbi appears to be moving quickly to end its investigation reportedly as early as today. we have complete coverage including a live interview with the senators whose alliance led to this new fbi look at brett kavanaugh. we start with peter alexander at the white house, peter, good morning. >> good morning to you. as you noted, the fbi's background investigation into brett kavanaugh could be completed today. that is according two sources familiar with the matter. president trump just days ago called kavanaugh's accuser very credible for the first time is now directly going after what he views as holes in ford's claims, imitating her testimony.
7:03 am
>> reporter: president trump in minnesota openly mocking christine blasey ford's testimony, accusing brett kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her at a party in the 1980s. the crowd cheering him on. >> i had one beer. right? i had one beer. well, you think -- nope. it was one beer. oh, good. how did you get home? i don't remember. how did you get there? i don't remember. where is the place? i don't remember. how many years ago was it? >> i don't know. i don't know. >> and the president wasn't finished. >> and a man's life is in tatters. a man's life is shattered. they destroy people. they want to destroy people. these are really evil people. >> reporter: the president's tone in sharp contrast to last week. >> i feel like her testimony was very compelling. >> reporter: the president trying to distance himself from kavanaugh even while defending him. >> i don't even know him, folks. i don't even know him. i met him for the first time a few weeks ago. i don't even know him. >> reporter: and highlighting

his own experiences with sexual misconduct allegations delivering a warning to her supporters. >> think of your son. think of your husband. i've had many false accusations. i've had it -- i've had so many. and when i say it didn't happen, nobody believes me. >> reporter: echoing the controversial comments to nbc news hours earlier. >> what do you say to young men in america? >> i say that it's a very scary time for young men in america when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of. >> reporter: "the new york times" reporting on a letter that kavanaugh roet wrote in 19 giving advice to high school teammates. kavanaugh alerting friends whoever arrived to the condo first should, "warn the neighbors that we're loud, obnoxious drunk with prolific pukers from us. advise them to go 30 miles." he confirms he wrote that note but not commenting further.
7:05 am
we have not seen the letter. it seems "the new york times" is committed to embarrassing judge kavanaugh with three decade old stories of adolescent drinking. the president brushing off kavanaugh's past drinking habits but acknowledging one thing could disqualify him from a seat on the nation's highest court. >> i don't think you should lie to congress and there have been a lot of people over the last year that have lied to congress and to me that would not be acceptable. >> reporter: with the fbi background investigation now wrapping up, ford's lawyers in scathing new letter to the fbi writing it's incon seenabceivab can conduct an investigation without interviewing her. one of dr. ford's lawyers responded to the comments on twitter blasting it as a vicious, vile, and soulless attack. praising ford as a remarkable profile and courage and slamming the president as a cowardess.
7:06 am
it was a deal between jeff flake of arizona and chris coombs that led us to this investigation. >> i know you just heard what the president had to say about the accuser, dr. ford, last night. i'll start with you senator flake. what do you think of those remarks? >> well, there is no time and no place for remarks like that. but to discuss something this sensitive at a political rally is just not right. it's just not right. i wish he hadn't done it. and say it's kind of appalling. >> multiple news outlets are reporting that the fbi is very close to wrapping the investigation, in fact, it could wrap as early as today. does that strike you as sufficient time or rusheded? >> that concerns me. i hope the fbi is allowed to
7:07 am
follow all the reasonable leads from the credible allegation that's were before the committee last week. and i know that puts them under a lot of pressure. they got the resources to do it. jeff and i came to an important agreement that it would be a one week investigation. and then leave it to the professionals at the fbi to decide exactly who they ought to interview and deliver a final report to the senate. >> as we understand it from the lawyers involved, so far there has been no fbi interviews of either dr. ford the accuser or judge kavanaugh the accused. now, again, the investigation isn't done. but would it concern you, senator flake, if the fbi came back and said, you know, we didn't need to talk to them, they gave their testimony. would that, to you, be a comprehensive investigation if they talked to neither party involved? >> well, we have the statement of dr. ford and then we have hours of testimony. so, frankly, when we talked about an fbi investigation, it was to follow up leads that might corroborate her account.
7:08 am
so i don't -- i'm not troubled by that as much as if we came back and found out that the fbi only followed a couple of leads or interviewed just a couple of people. so i'm anxious to hear back from the fbi as chris said. you know, this is supposed to be a week. i believe they can get it done in a week. and we're anxious to see the report. >> do you think, senator flake that, judge kavanaugh now that you had time to think about it and obviously some various things have come forward, people that knew him come forward in the media, do you think that judge kavanaugh was truthful and straight forward in all respects at the hearing before your committee? >> well, he, you know, a lot of people were concerned about the tone that he used when he said what he said. my reaction was that's probably how i would react if i felt that i was unjustly accused. some of the comments were sharp. and more partisan than a lot of
7:09 am
of us would like to see. having said that, we've seen a record he had on the court of being collegial and working with other members. i think you have to give some leeway for the charges that were coming against him and how he would feel. >> yeah, these are humans under tremendous pressure. but with regard to his drinking in particular, you know, it seemed that he down played it somewhat and then, of course, there have been people coming forward suggesting he did do more serious drinking than he communicated to the committee. if that were the case, would you consider that to be a situation where he had not been truthful with the committee? >> well, that's obviously difficult to judge what constitutes drinking in excess. i'm not sure how to quite judge that. especially for this mormon, that's a tough one for me to judge that. but obviously if there are
7:10 am
demonstratable lies and something is blatantly and he misled the committee in that way, then that's something that is not right and shouldn't happen. can't happen. but we'll have to look at what the fbi comes back with. i don't want to prejudge what they're doing. >> senator, on the flip side of that question, a lot of people are thinking, wait a minute, now we're getting into year book inscriptions. we're getting into letters that an 18 or 17-year-old kid wrote about his beach week. give me a break. some people are thinking, is this really what we're getting into? is it really fair? is it really relevant to which you would respond what? >> savannah, when dr. ford came forward with what president trump described as credible and compelling testimony, i thought and my friend jeff flake thought that deserved a brief, a week long further investigation to show the victims of sexual assault in this country that we take it seriously and worth investigating. i think whether or not he
7:11 am
testifie truthfully to the committee is before us. the fbi is not going to reach collusions. they'll deliver facts to us from further questioning and then we the senate are going to have to make an ultimate decision. but, senator, you -- >> i'm a democrat. i think it is important to work together to accomplish that. >> definitely. in fairness, you were already going to vote against judge kavanaugh anyway. so i'm sure some people might be sitting there going, wait a minute, isn't this exactly what is wrong with the process in the first place? everybody's voting along partisan lines. >> savannah, i decided i was going to vote against judge kavanaugh after days of interviews and reviewing his speeches, writings, and his opinions on the d.c. circuit. i think he's outside the legal mainstream. jeff's a conservative. he would like a conservative on the court, i'm not. i don't agree with judge kavanaugh's legal philosophy. this second chapter in the confirmation hearing that was occasioned by dr. ford coming forward with the allegations has
7:12 am
rocked the senate and divided us in a very significant way. i think what jeff did that was brave and worth positive regard was saying let's just pause for a week and give the fbi the opportunity to investigate this so the senate can make a decision on a more shared set of facts. >> even if no votes are changed in the end to have a pause here and have an fbi investigation gives us all more confidence in the process. and that's important. when we came into that committee hearing, the hearing -- i'm sorry, the markup on friday and it was a food fight between the parties, republicans were yelling at democrats and democrats not wanting to vote and we felt we could do better than this and the country and institutions of the senate and the court needed more than we were giving it. and so that's why we're having this pause in this investigation so hopefully we'll come to a better place by the end of the week.
7:13 am
>> we'll see what happens with the investigation. senators, it's g have you with us together this morning. we appreciate it. >> thank you. meantime, the government says it will now look into the findings from a headline making "new york times" investigation into the trump family finances. nbc's chief white house correspondent has the latest on that. good morning. >> good morning to you. the new york state tax department is now reviewing the allegations in that epic and explosive "new york times" investigation illustrating potential fraud, scams and more on the part of the trumps. for a president who made a lot of money off his billionaire image in books and on "the apprentice," the story punctures the myth of the self made man. >> reporter: he based the brand on making a lot out of a little. >> my father gave me a small loan of $1 million. i built a company worth more than $10 billion.
