5:00 am
freeway getting toward the bay bridge they are just fine. little bit of moisture in the air left over because of the rains we had recently but not causing a problem for visibility. it is an issue for the commute right here. this is the it meaning the closure we talked about and the crash involving a horse and a pickup. the horse was injured so badly, it did have to be put down. there is a closure for kirker pass road westbound, your commute direction right near myrtle, that's near the concord pavilion, as you get over in toward the rest of the city streets so there's not a great option for you, as i understand it right now. you'll have to take bailey and completely stay off of kirker pass road from highway 4 cutting through toward concord and it's really in the clayton area where the crash is. highway 4 over toward 242 and 680 also options for you and we'll follow this on city streets. meanwhile, the rest of the bay does show a smooth drive. we have a new crash reported 680 around burnow, details from chp coming in the next few minutes. down here at the bottom the closure for highway 17 reopened
5:01 am
after that truck crashed yesterday. highway 17 is open again. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. our top story now in two and a half hours the senate will hold a critical vote on judge kavanaugh's controversial supreme court nomination. >> let's get the latest on what's happening on capitol hill. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is following all of the development. tracie? >> hi marcus and kris, good morning, everyone. those developments are really going to come to light in about two and a half hours, it's a test vote followed by 30 hours of back-and-forth debate between democrats and republicans leading up to what we believe could be a final vote on this nomination as early as tomorrow afternoon. more protesters are expected at the capitol today, as the senate takes a test vote this morning on judge brett kavanaugh's supreme court nomination. >> they turned their back on
5:02 am
america's women. >> reporter: a simple majority wins. three republicans and one democrat remain undecided after viewing the fbi's interviews on alleged sexual misconduct. republicans released a summary overnight, their conclusion? >> none of the allegations have been corroborated. >> reporter: democrats want to see white house instructions to the fbi. >> we believe it greatly constrained the investigation from the get-go. >> to put it bluntly, it smacks of a whitewash, even a coverup. >> reporter: kavanaugh pleading his case in the "wall street journal" this morning, he calls the allegations wrongful, and vicious. >> i am innocent of this charge. >> reporter: and admits being too emotional at last week's hearing. president trump told a crowd in minnesota last night, it's all politics. >> democrats have been trying to destroy judge brett kavanaugh
5:03 am
since the very first second he was announced. >> reporter: republicans insist no more delays. >> why don't we dunk him in water and see if he floats. enough. enough already. let's vote. >> reporter: it's a tight margin. republicans can only afford to lose one vote. so two of those undecided republicans now seem to be leaning toward supporting judge kavanaugh. they haven't said that's their vote but senator collins after looking at the fbi report said she thought it was a thorough investigation. senator flake said the report was reassuring and he didn't see anything that backed up sexual misconduct claims. we'll see how they actually vote when that gets under way two and a half hours from now. kris and marcus? >> thank you very much. tracie, we know a lot of folks are watching that clock to see when it's going to happen and we're watching this morning's developments closely as well. nbc news coverage of the vote

5:05 am
especially for those folks trying to get across highway 17 to get over here. that big rig carrying excavators was not able to make it under the overpass at blossom hill road, damaging the bridge decking and causing some inspections overnight. we still do not know when it will be open again. traffic was backed up for a few hours and all lanes on highway 17 southbound were not opened until this morning. frustrating night for drivers. >> i went back around the other way and highway 9 is jammed all the way back so i couldn't get there, so i had to walk. >> we're fortunate that no one got hurt during this incident, as it could have gone a lot worse. >> reporter: extremely fortunate there were no injuries. good samaritan drivers actually helped detour vehicles around the accident until emergency crews and police arrived on the scene. back live at this closure, if it does remain in effect through the commuting hours this morning, cross town traffic people trying to get back and
5:06 am
forth across highway 17 will have to use either lark avenue or highway 9 for now. we're live in los gatos, tom jensen, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, tom. >> 5:05 right now. new details medical examiners identified the man who died after a violent confrontation with deputies in millbrae. the incident stopped traffic on el camino reale wednesday avenue. 36-year-old chindu okobi of redwood city would not stop running in and out of traffic. responding deputies eventually deployed their tasers. the exact cause of death has not been determined but firearms were never used. the deputy injured in the melee now home from the hospital. new this morning, a convicted sex offender is facing new charges, after his arrest in the north bay. santa rosa police yesterday arrested benjamin schumate from rio nito, accused of having sex with a minor. he is already on parole for arranging to meet with a minor

5:16 am
anywhere. there used to be places you could relax, whether that was at a ball game or anywhere else. >> maynard and i sat down for a conversation about leadership this morning right after "meet the press" sunday. he's also on the board at sales sports. he's at yahoo! and yahoo! never works out, right? we can't really call that a success. meanwhile sales force builds the second tallest building west of its mississippi, so what is it like to be in charge at two different companies with two different outcomes? >> and what's the difference? >> oh, yes. we talked about that, where was that point. >> look forward to it. >> thank you. all right, look, are you feeling lucky here? you might want to pick up a mega millions ticket today. tonight's drawing is $405 million in jackpot money there. the top ten mega millions jackpot of all-time. so no one matched the six numbers on tuesday so people have until 9:45 tonight to try

5:19 am
concern this weekend will be the winds starting to pick up headed into saturday evening through especially sunday afternoon, and it's going to be much warmer with highs in the low 80s. for san francisco, fleet week and the air show, we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds and a lot more sunshine. i don't think we'll see as much in the way of the fog, and then we'll see that fog returning early next week. heading over to mike, you are updating the two big crashes. >> the rest of the bay moves very smoothly, light traffic. two areas of concern, the first is the freeway 680 coming through the tri valley. oh, a little note we should start with, highway 17 is completely reopened as far as the freeway itself. tom jensen still over there blossom hill road overcrossing, still closing, a couple of schools over there. 680 i'm tracking the latest update is that three lanes, your three right lanes indeed are blocked, only your far slow lane gets by as you're traveling
5:20 am
through the area, southbound 680 as you're passing by burnell a truck, a big rig spilled 27 tons of dirt on the roadway, so that has to be cleaned up. this will be a major problem until they do. however, folks coming out of the altamont can take that livermore cut-through, take stanley or perhaps highway 84 down toward 680. this cut-through, kirker pass road coming off of highway 4 cutting through clayton toward concord we have the closure. it sounds like you can access myrtle drive, coming through the area past concord pavilion. pickup truck crashed into a horse that was wandering on the roadway there. the driver for that pickup had to be taken away from the scene to the hospital. sounds like serious injuries. still this activity and there is the slow drive westbound of course going through kirker pass road, your cut-through from highway 4. we'll get you back out to the map. you have to avoid that area use bailey. over toward 242 and 680, those are all clear easy all tternate

5:30 right now. good morning to you. thanks for waking up to us right here on "today in the bay" this friday morning. as we take a live look in downtown sunnyvale, historic murphy avenue there. great way to wake up. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm kris sanchez in for laura garcia on this friday morning. we want to talk about the forecast, because we know that
5:31 am
you probably have plans for this weekend. >> yes, i think there say lot going on around the bay area. as we just get up and try to get out the door for work this morning, it's already starting to look busy out there in palo alto and our temperatures are going to be much cooler than yesterday, when you head out the door, so grab a jacket, our temperatures will stay in the 50s through about 10:00, and then it's going to be a nice day, those breezy winds picking up on your way out the door to the fruitvale b.a.r.t. station only some mid-50s there and partly cloudy skies but it will be clearing up today, headed into the mid-60s there as we look at our microclimate high temperatures. upper 70s for our warmer spots and low 60s for the coast. mike, now you're tracking a traffic alert. >> one official traffic alert from chp and another for local traffic so we'll show you, a third i guess is gone. highway 17 completely reopened but blossom hill over the freeway the overpass is closed. you'll connect using lark, to the bottom. the active traffic alert right here for the tri valley
5:32 am
southbound 680 just past burnell an overturned rig is blocking three lanes. three left lanes as you travel south are jammed up because of 27. tons of dirt, 54,000 pounds that has to be removed during the morning commute. if you do travel from the altamont you can cut through pleasanton and livermore. kirker pass road is cut off here for the westbound commute direction because of a crash involving a horse and a pickup truck. bailey or 242, we'll talk more about that crash but i wanted to show you aside from that, the rest of cocoa county is fine getting toward the bay bridge where the metering lights may be turned on any second. traffic is light. this is the slowdown for 680, the alternate getting through the area that i showed you the traffic alert is foothill road. keep that in mind. back to you. >> thank you very much. more than a million people are expected to descend on san francisco over the next three days for fleet week so expect a lot of traffic particularly if
5:33 am
you are driving into the city. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from the transit center. the fremont street closure is a big reason that a lot of people need to take public transportation because they really could be your best friend here. >> reporter: good morning to you marcus and kris. sf mta always suggests folks take public transit when it comes to fleet week but even more so, when you look at the street closures still here on fremont street as they continue to work on those repairs at the sales force transit center. what's going to be closed is on fremont street between mission and howard, continuing to work on those two cracked steel beams. they've been here for more than about a week, working on that. as a result, the transit center i just showed you will remain closed but folks will have to use that temporary bus terminal which is just a couple of blocks away over at main and howard, something they had to use prior to that sales force transit center opening a couple of months ago. so that's why sf mta says your
5:34 am
best bet is to take public transit if you're headed here for fleet week. >> if you're try igto ging to g fleet week take public transit, regardless whether or not fremont would have been closed this weekend. we would have encouraged people to take public transit anyway because that's the best way to get around with the number of events going on across the city. >> reporter: sf mta will increase service for the metro and f lines. the f line is that historic cable car line that runs along the embarcadero. good view of the fleet week events and also cal train will have their san francisco stop closed due to construction. that's going to last actually through spring of 2019. let's take our viewers back out here live. crews working on fremont street which will be closed. expect a busy weekend if you're driving into san francisco for all of these events. we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> public transportation going to be your friend, i can guarantee that, pete, thanks.
5:35 am
fleet week really ramps up starting with the parade of ships which will roll through golden gate around 11:00 this morning. >> take a listen and look there. the blue angels gave everyone a taste of what's to come this weekend. their show runs today through sunday starting each day at noon. the angels usually take flight between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. one year later one east bay family is trying to find answers about their loved one's unsolved murder. 37-year-old emily korshane was found shot to death in her uncle's home in byron, which she was house sitting. her mother has a memorial to her daughter in her home on an urn on her shelf. she said the last year has been devastating for her and her family.
5:36 am
>> we'd like some closure. we want to know what happened, why it happened, who did this to her. >> the mother is planning a special memorial this weekend in concord and hope to release balloons tomorrow afternoon from emily's favorite softball field. a follow-up now it looks like game on for the silverado high school football team. you might remember our story earlier this week, when vandals in morgan hill drove onto the school's football field causing nearly $10,000 in damage. last week, the team had to move their game off campus but school leaders tell us the replacement field is ready for tomorrow's scheduled game. that turf is nfl grade turf because they needed it to root in time for the homecoming game, which is on saturday. parents, do you have a team that see -- teen addicted to their smartphones? a lot of adults are so you're not alone here. >> kira klapper goes over how to

5:39 am
this, our shot over at kirker pass road. my understanding is these flares and folks slowly traveling by lane restrictions westbound your commute you're forced off there myrtle drive eastbound much less traveled, one car went by. let's show you where that is on our maps. the closure because of that pickup versus horse crash there on kirker pass road westbound is your commute cutting off highway 4 and concord through clayton. off at myrtle you can use the city street, should be just a couple blocks but that will slow you down. bailey stays clear. highway 4 is clear so that's a good option for you as we move out, you see the rest of cocoa county, moves at speed headed toward the bay bridge toll plaza. fender bender reported in the area. we'll check on that but the metering lights just turned on. over here a much bigger problem for the tri valley, south 680 down to one lane just south of burnell because of 27 tons of dirt still in the roadway. only your right lane gets by. right now we don't have an estimated time for opening. that's a huge problem but the only major problem in the area
5:40 am
you see. >> the good news is it's not toxic, so they can sweep it up. >> still waiting on the final there. also good news it's the weekend and the weather is looking nice out there for us. >> yes, we had to deal with the rain and the high humidity the past couple of days. as we go into the weekend temperatures are down and sunshine. for saturday the coast in the mid-60s. 72 degrees for the bay and inland areas as well looking at some upper 70s. it's going to be breezy on sunday, and downright windy as we go into the afternoon, with our winds picking up at about 30 to possibly 40 miles per hour with higher gusts. so with that, we're looking at a dry northerly wind, temperatures reaching into the low 80s. that's going to make it feel warmer, even in san francisco, as you make plans to go to the air show, today is going to be the coolest, but we'll also see the clear skies. for tomorrow, we're up to 65
5:41 am
degrees and i think the winds will kind of mix out the potential of getting any really dense fog, so it should stay sunny all weekend long. if you're making plans to head to campbell for the st. lucie school fun fest this is going on all weekend and for a great cause. we're going to see the high temperatures reaching into the upper 70s there, and then on sunday, this of course going on all weekend as well. you may wrap up the weekend here at golden gate park for the hardly strictly blue grass and this is going to be a nice event to enjoy the sunshine, and the warmer weather. heavenly is going to be much cooler, especially by the end of the weekend. highs there only reaching the upper 40s. we'll talk about what's going on today for palo alto, coming up in three minutes. >> thank you very much, kari. quocoming up, a toddler giv his parents a lesson in money. the reason they will never leave cash laying around that kid again. >> brett kavanaugh making a last-minute appeal to the american public and to senators as well. we'll tell you what it is, when "today in the bay" continues.
