we have much more ahead on "today in the bay" coming up, the conffirmation of justice brett kavanaugh is causing extreme reaction from both sides of the aisle. political analyst larry gerston joins us live to discuss what's considered to have been a very good week for president donald trump. this has been a good week

president donald trump. on friday, the department of labor announced a new welcome back. this has been a good week for president donald trump. on friday the department of labor announced a new unemployment rate of 3.7%, that's the lowest in nearly 50 years. yesterday after the most contentious confirmation debate in recent memory, judge brett kavanaugh was elevated to the u.s. supreme court. nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston joins us with his thoughts. there's so much to cover, but what's the significance if you can boil it down of these events? >> let's start with the economy, absolutely, the economy, 3.7% unemployment. it's quite an accomplishment for the president. no doubt about it. but it's a political fact of life, kira, that presidents take credit when the economy is good.
7:47 am
>> right. >> they get blamed when the economy tanks, even though they have little control in either case for that matter. so the conditions here for the current economic recovery, they were put in place by the obama administration during the great recession, and the economy, fair enough, continues to hum to this day. president trump has seized this moment as his, and you know what? he has been wise to do so. >> indeed. let's turn to the kavanaugh confirmation which was surrounded by controversy because of the allegations of sexual misconduct and judge kavanaugh's own behavior during the hearing. what do we make of that? >> here we see another victory for president trump, again, despite allegations about kavanaugh's past and the public outrage over his temperament, kavanaugh's nomination was narrowly confirmed yesterday. much of the credit is due to senate majority leader mitch mcconnell. since his election to the senate, mcconnell has been single-minded.
7:48 am
he's been on a mission to place conservative justices on the supreme court, and guess what? he succeeded. succeeded much to the joy of the president's base and his, by the way, as well as the chagrin of his detractors. as a result, here is what we have. the court now has a firm majority, a firm conservative a majority, likely to overturn or severely limit a right's women to choose. as we said so many times, kira, elections have consequences. president trump's selection has allowed him to appoint two very conservative individuals to the u.s. supreme court and that's the way it will be for a while. >> right, so we have two big victories there for president trump. what do you think is the significance for the midterms which are a month from yesterday? >> here is where it gets really interesting. the future is less clear today than it was even a week ago. for months, the polls have showed much more enthusiasm

among democrats than republicans, and that's a significant factor. very important in predicting what happens in elections, such as in this case, the much anticipated blue wave, but during the kavanaugh kerfuffle, the gap closed to two points suggesting republicans had become as enthusiastic as democrats. now that the dust has settled, the question is, whether democrats will redouble their energy even more with even more determination, or whether the republicans will sense an opportunity for the kill, an opportunity to keep control over both the house and the senate. >> do you have any idea, any hints as to what we can expect? >> a little. little. you know, we've seen during the last two weeks how quickly the winds can change in an election year. so any prediction must include that calf nationveat but lookin for now it appears that the democrats have lost any hope of regaining a senate majority, and

something by the way that was slim in the first place because of the huge number of democratic senators up for re-election in red states, but as for the house, the huge number of republican retirements still leave the democrats with a good chance of regaining a majority, although it may be less than the polls suggested even a week ago, but let's remember this. we are in an extremely volatile period, four weeks, need i tell you, is an eternity, an eternity during an election year. so depending upon events, what happens in the near future may really dwarf the immediate past. >> wow, yes, it's just mind-blowing to think many people thought they were quite certain a week ago, and now there's so much uncertainty. >> they thought it was a lock. lock for the democrats, not a blue wave, a tsunami. >> a tsunami. >> events can change the course of history over and over again. >> yes, and four whole weeks to go. all right, as always, larry gerston, thanks for your

thanks rob. good morning, clear skies around san francisco. temperatures set to surprise you, zoun downtown san francisco 68 degrees this morning, a sign of the north to offshore breezes taking effect, bringing that warmer, drier air down toward the surface this morning around san francisco and around the east bay hills. humidity levels in the 30% range at 65 degrees in dublin. highs today later in the 80s and there's san jose also in the 60s right now, and we do expect temperatures around san jose to climb into the 80s. the reason why we're in red in a microclimate weather alert is due to the dry, gusty winds setting up in the north bay and east bay hills. wind gusts have topped 50 miles per hour, at least the pleasant part of the forecast should be the temperatures today, low to mid 80s south of san francisco. it's the wind that will be the

big story especially around some of our hilltops. tri valley temperatures in the mid 80s. our bayside temperatures near oakland and berkeley, upper 70s to low 80s. peninsula temperatures about the same. should see 70s on the coast. down toward santa cruz 80s in the forecast today. you see san francisco upper 60s now, 70s, maybe even close to 80 around downtown if the winds back off slightly for the afternoon, and for the north bay, we'll see highs in the mid 80s. so for the 49ers game looks like a warm day. you see the temperatures start to climb up into the 80s around santa clara and for the blue angels, great visibility. winds will be gusty so whether they fly the high altitude show or the low show as it's known sometimes, they will have good visibility. it's just the winds will be pretty gusty across some of the peninsula hilltops. wind speeds by 11:00 this morning we begin to see stronger winds mixing down toward sea level. they may taper off briefly, heading toward the evening, then watch closely here in the north bay as we approach 11:00

tonight, wind speeds likely going up again. the reason why the wind advisory will go through mid morning monday and also the red flag warning as well. look at the humidity levels dropping off into the afternoon, and very interesting here, as we head toward 11:00 at night, still very dry in the north bay hills. the reason for the wind, high pressure to the west, area of low pressure starting to head out during the day monday, so winds will start to back off. we'll see the slight return of a sea breeze, and maybe a little more humidity as we head toward the middle part of the week, before more breezy conditions setting up toward thursday and friday. so high fire danger across the peninsula hilltops. warm day around san francisco. inland spots seeing numbers in the mid 80s tomorrow, a little less wind for your monday. trending a bit cooler toward the middle part of the week so gorgeous looking views for fleet week but the winds a top concern headed into monday morning. >> a lot of bad coming with all that beautiful good. rob, thanks. well, i know you saw this. finally this morning, we'll show the viewers elusive street

artist banksy is known for elaborate pranks but his latest shenanigan caught people by surprise. moments after that piece was auctioned off in london for $1.4 million an alarm sounded and the artwork ran through the shredder, embedded in the frame secretly embedded in the frame. everyone was shocked especially the person who had just paid $1.5 million for it. the auction house said it is in the talks with the buyer about what to do. some have suggested the work could be worth even more in its shredded state. i really don't follow banksy. i really don't get banksy and i cannot fathom how he was able to sneak that shredder in and time it so that it would go off. >> instagram, it has an instagram feed shows the process how he did it and was at the auction and you see the partial disassembly i go's of thuess of painting. >> i saw that on instagram.
