francisco. welcome to monday morning. let's take a peek outside. live look at the beautiful bay bridge this morning, illuminated nicely. i notice a lot of folks up and about early this morning, and it's columbus day. good morning to you, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to that traffic in a moment. mike inouye has that for us. first the weather, meteorologist kari hall is here and a cool start to the morning. >> it is a cool start. we'll start out with temperatures in the 50s and we have a high fire danger that continues from over the weekend and we do have that red flag warn so long that will be the main story, those gusty winds that will continue through about 9:00 and then the red flag warning and the wind over the weekend, over 55 miles

per hour. live look in sunnyvale, we are going to see temperatures warmer than normal as we start out with low 60s at 8:00, we're headed into the upper 70s in the south bay. we'll talk about what's ahead as we go into the rest of the week and mike, you're traffic a fire reported near the bay bridge. >> it came in to the chp reports just before 4:00. we're looking at your speed spe sensors around the bay very light. we may have less traffic many folks in the financial area of san francisco get today off because it is a federal holiday but over here, right near the maze, we did have a fire reported at powell, taking a live look out there, i scanned the whole areah the camera fire crew, that's good news over the last few minutes. whatever was going on north bay. we'll talk about that in a couple seconds. right now toss it back to you, something breaking that happened overnight. theht now in a fremont neighborhood where a manhunt is under way for a

killer after an overnight homicide. >> "today in the bay's" rob slater is live near 680 and auto mall parkway. set the scene for us. >> reporter: good morning, we're being kept quite a ways back where detectives are working. we're at the corner of continental and charleston way. detectives are about the end of that block. this is the grimmer neighborhood of fremont, not far away from the grimmer elementary school. police have cordi icordonned of large perimeter of the neighborhood as their search for a suspect on foot and officers are also using a drone, we're told, in that search. we don't have a lot of information but let's get you caught up on what we know. witness called to find a victi inside a home. pas pronounced that person deaded athe sce at the s. there is a manhunt for a male

suspect. so far no information from police on a suspect description, no information on the victim being released at this time as well. we don't know if the suspect and the victim knew each other and we certainly don't know at this point what happened leading up to all of this, but again, homicide detectives and crime scene investigators working at the end of this block here trying to get information, this being just the second homicide in fremont so far this year, as we get more information, we will bring it to you. for now i'm ross the player fp "today in the bay." a fire in solano county scorched thousands of of travis air force base. flames jumped highway 12 andame. one woman we spoke to was nervous, as she watched the fire get closer literally right over the hills, and the wind was vicious, all night, into the morning, so in my head i was like that can

easily blow over here. >> the fire is burning in marshland, so firefighters can't get to some of the areas, making for a tough fight. today marks one year since the devastating north bay wildfires. this weekend a lot of people took time to remember the victims and focus on the recovery. >> sergio quintana filed this report from sonoma county. >> reporter: nearly a year ago sonoma plaza was teeming with they survived. riched hundley says her life has never been the same. >> for me, the experience o car not only the 11,000 people who live in the city but their sa b just feeling like i was personally responsible for everybody. >> reporter: during tonight's ceremony, they rang the town hall bell 44 times in honor of the people who were killed in the northern california firestorm, and for those who survived, but lost their homes,

done to fully rebuild. in sonoma, i'm sergio quintana, "nbc bay area news." b.a.r.t. tests its high tech shake alert system, designed to detect major earthquakes so the trains can slow down before a disaster strikes. the trains will reduce speed around 11:00 a.m. for the test. all trains and all stations will broadcast an alert to passengers to simulate an warning earthquake alarm. after the test, b.a.r.t. leader also join lawmakers and seismologists to talk about the expanding that shake. e across the entire west coast. starting today, commuters who work at b.a.r.t.'s west oakland station will haveen dee. daily rates will be 50 cents higher, totally $10.50. single day reserve parking rates aring if higher to $13.

good morning, san jose. i'm brian sullivan. here are your top money stories monday morning. stocks likely to open lower. the dow fell on friday, largely on concern over rg bonds, but it does mean that interest rates and the money you borrow is going to go higher. the nasdaq had its worst week since last march. tesla dropping 15%, and netflix down nearly 8% just last week. speaking of streaming video, walmart teaming up with mgm studios to create content for its video on demand service called voodoo. the focus will be on more family friendly mo lly movies and show. formal announcement expected wednesday. all you parents listen up, retailers are reportedly stocking up on toys trying to

drifts of smoke from some of the wildfires that are still burning currently. as we take a live look in san jose, it's all clear here but the air quality is going to be an issue, mainly once again because of the smoke drifting around and we are going to have moderate air quality for the bay and the coast as well as inland east bay, santa clara valley and the south bay. north bay looking good, as a lot of the smoke has been drifting away from the north bay. so as we start out this morning, look at how warm it is. fairfield is at 70 degrees to start out the day. we're at 61 degrees in san jose, and 66 in palo alto and oakland. we have this dry northerly wind coming in, so that's going to make it feel warmer today, even in oakland as we start out with low 60s there, we're going to be in the mid-70s by noon already, as we look at martinez, also another very warm day, with some upper 70s throughout the afternoon, and mostly sunny skies. looking at our high temperatures, we are still under that microclimate weather alert,

because of the high fire danger, and as we look at our high temperurday, still very warm for this time of year, but san jose reaching 82 degrees. 86 in santa rosa, and75 summer wear, like what we h and keep you comfortable today and as we go through the forecast, it's going to cool off. we'll still have the breezy winds, highs reaching into the mid-70s today, but then we'll drop it back into the upper 60s, but we do have another warm weekend ahead, especially for the inland areas, with 85 expected today, and then a slight cooldown midweek but going right back up by the end of the week, so we'll continue to watch that fire danger. mike, you're starting out with a road closure this morning. >> that's right, kari, all weekend willow has been closed off over 101. between the dumbarton bridge and the bay shore freeway folks have had to use university as one option and to the north marsh as well. you see the sign and in e area and maybe cleaning up, again, 101 north and southbound,

not accessiblethat's critical a. we're looking at smooth speeds on the freeway, 101, 280 along the peninsula side, the south bay no delays coming from the south county or the vsanta cruz mountains. up here westbound 80 your commute down the upper east shore freeway at penol reporting of a leaning truck, i believe that means the truck was traveling slowly in the slow lane, people were concerned about what it was carrying on the back of it. i'll watch for any further reports. hopefully there's no follow-up. hopefully it gets off the freeway fine. west 80 across the bay bridge beautiful view of the city. folks, remember, we continue with that closure of fremont street at the temporary transit center and we still have folks in town from fleet week. one phase of the repair work

on san francisco's new transit er this week. authorities say things are back on track to reopen fremont street on friday and the focus is shoring up first street. traffic on first street will not be affected during the day. it will be a shuttown overnight. cracked beams have not been found on that side but it has a very similar design to the problem spot they found along fremont street. developing right now, friends and loved ones expressing shock over the death of 20 people killed in a limousine crash in upstate new york. >> amy and axle steinberg are one of the young couples that died in the crash. her threeist issers along with friends were celebrating her 30th birthday. all 18 people in that i wilimo killed. the suv blew through a stop sign, plowing into a parked car, killing two other people standing nearby. friends say they are simply stunned. >> we're a small community, and

they're all our friends, and nobody should ever have to see what happened yesterday. >> investigators are at the scene trying to determine the exact cause. this is the deadliest u.s. transportation aen ten years. you may soon have more food options in alameda county as the health department works on a plan to allow pop-up restaurants today. simply put, county gold has not kept up with pop-up restaurants and that movement so the goal is to bring them in to code compliance for health and safety for the eating of the public. the proposal would allow existing permitted facilities to host pop-ups. alameda county's pop-up process would be fully baked by december. coming up here on "today in the bay," nbc bay area responds your home because a wall of flames is headed that way. what will you take and what should you do right now to get ready for that? i'm consumer investigator chris

need to go back right now. >> when a firefighter or police officer tells you to evacuate your home, the stress is enormous. you have just minutes, maybe seconds to leave. building a go bag of essentials now will make that escape easier and that's exactly what you need inessentials, clothing, blanket, prescription medicine. get your next refill a couple days early to build up a surplus. paperwork, cash, small bills, radio, batteries. the rest will vary by family. when you evacuate, shelters might not open for a day or two, so take a few minutes now to figure out what you need to be self-sufficient. then stuff it in a bag near the front door. >> if that unfortunate moment happens to you or your family, you have one designated bag in one designated spot that you can grab, go out the door with and actually have some things that can be helpful. >> one startling realization from the north bay fires was

that you need an old-fashioned street map in your go bag, a paper one. i know everyone uses gps, but last year cell towers shut down during the fire storm. gps was simply useless, so get a paper map to help you get out of danger. you can print out a full list of what's recommended for your go bag from our website, nbcbayarea.com/responds. >> 4:55 right now. we're getting a look inside the recently opened exhibit that sheds light on what it was once hidden part of the history. >> sally hemmings was one of president thomas jefferson's slaves. she gave birth to six of his children. until recently, there was almost no mention of her at the museum at monticello, jefferson's virginia home. the new exhibit dedicated to hemmings commemorates more of her life. the museum is redoing some of their other exhibits with the of being inclusive of the enslaved people who lived

there. new video of what you might call an unusual political protest, nearly 1,000 dogs and their owners marched on parliament in london. they're demanding a second vote on brexit, britain's plan to leave the european union. protesters claim animals will suffer when britain leaves the eu saying that there will be a shortage of vets and a rise in the cost of pet food. thousands of people spent sunday morning running through the streets of the south bay. >> it was the 13th rock 'n' roll running event in san jose. the two-day event is musically themed whationed along the route playing live music. the weekend featured a number of races for everyone, from kids to people wheelchairs ran the main and half marathon, and one man we spoke with has really been coming out for this race for about eight years. >> the spirit of san jose now.

good morning, it will be a warm afternoon as we reach into the upper 70s and even some low 80s. i'll talk more about the fire danger coming up in a few minutes, and mike will get you out there on the roads with a look at the morning commute >> kari, we got report of a crash last minute here coming into the traffic center. i swung our camera around in san jose, this is 101 northbound at 280, exactly where the crash is reported in your left two lanes. i don't see any problem here. little brake tapping. i swung through the area and we'll check again. so far, this is where it's reported northbound 101 approaching the 280/680 interchange, reports of a single car that scraped the center divide and over there in the left two lanes. again we'll watch for the slowing and i'll track that with the live camera, all around the bay
