showed willow the off and on ramp reopened. you also notice all over the bay, green, green, green. lighter volume expected for the early morning commute as we see right now because of the federal holiday for many businesses, they're observing columbus day. northbound 101 is where we see the slow drive, for the south bay, north 101 had a couple of crashes, the most recent at story road, still on the shoulder, still a distraction but a light and mild build for 87, just plan on that for the south bay. over here we're looking at no major problems from cocoa county. on the peninsula northbound 101 at candlestick a crash reported and maybe blocking two of your left lanes. that was the latest update but chp has yet to arrive. i will track that, and of course the bay bridge toll plaza has your backup. we've just filled in almost all the cash lanes, all the way back. that's a slower build but it's still there. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. back to that breaking news we were telling you about at the top of the show. new story we've been working on since we came on air at 4:30.

>> police cruiser answer crime tape all over the ground and a drone in the sky flying over a fremont neighborhood as investigators search for a killer. >> "today in the bay's" roz slater is live near 680 and auto mall parkway. roz, this is happening near an elementary school? >> reporter: it is indeed, and we have just seen a few more officers arrive here on the scene. this is the grimmer neighborhood not far from the grimmer elementary school. just down the end of the street here is where the officers are working. it's hard to see them in the dark but they're coming in and out of a house there. we're told they're pouring a lot of resources into this investigation, including that drone, as you said, in this search. now, they have cordoned off a part of this neighborhood, a rather large part of this neighborhood as i searched the neighborhood for that suspect and beyond this neighborhood as well. here is what we know so far, a witness called police around 12:30 this morning after hearing gunshots. police tell us that officers found the victim inside a home.

paramedics responded, and pronounced that victim dead at the scene. there is this manhunt going on now for a male suspect. that is all we know about the suspect so far. also, no information being released right now about the victim in this case. now, they are indeed focusing on this neighborhood, but police spokesperson tells us it is possible the suspect left the area. there seems to have been a bit of a delay between when the smo shots were fired and police were called, likely just minutes but that might have been enough time for the shooter to take off and leave the area. homicide detectives focus their energy at the end of this street here, that is the home where we believe all this took place. they are canvassing the neighborhood, trying to talk to neighbors, trying to look for any kind of clues. as soon as we get more information about this, we're told we could get a briefing as early as an hour from now around 7:00. as soon as we get more information, we'll bring that to you. live in fremont, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> we'll check back with you,

thank you, roz. if you are outside at any point yesterday you probably smelled that smoke, choking a big chunk of the bay area. the wildfire in solano county and southern santa clara county sent smoke into the skies and this morning, another warn something going out before you head out the door. >> you'll probably still smell the smoke. "today in the bay's" pete suratos has an alert in the bay area impact so long many of us. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. we're here in sunol, there were two new vegetation fires earlier, they were able to contain it. not smelling as much smoke now but i smelled a lot of that smoke firsthand yesterday as i was driving into the livermore area and a lot of folks were wondering where was the smoke coming from? we'll explain it right now. we want to show you where intha major fire took place in solano county, this happening around 11:30 a.m., reaching 4500 acres, just off of brandscomb road and highway 12 and in vacaville off

interstate 505 this halted traffic in the area. there was another fire near vaca valley parkway. both of the fires pushing smoke into nearby counties. plenty of folks smelling it especially yesterday afternoon and in the morning. when it came to the city, the winds were high at 40 miles per hour and it destroyed a home and two structures in the area, and that fast-moving fire left some residents in that area worried. >> it looked really close, like literally over the hill. the wind was vicious into the night and the morning. in my head it was like that could easily blow over here. >> reporter: now in the south bay, there was a 62-acre fire in morgan hill off of 101 and monterey road, so that contributed to these air quality issues, and i want to point out that air quality advisory will still be in effect throughout today. we're live here in sunol, pete

sur r surratos for "today in the bay." >> the burning eyes and the i h itchy throat and all of that stuff, the effects of the smoke in the air. we'll have drifts of smoke throughout the day in parts of the south bay. the inland parts of the east bay, as well as santa clara valley. the north bay pretty good because the winds have been coming in from the north and blowing everything farther to the south. so the smoke advisory still continues today, and we also have a red flag warning as well as a wind advisory that will be in effect until about 9:00 this morning, and then our winds gradually calming down but we have low humidity and high winds as we go throughout the day. our humidity for parts of the east bay and south bay hills will be at about 10% to 20% at times, so very low humidity, and still a dry northerly wind coming in today and once again, those winds will calm down as we head into this evening. so we will talk about our temperatures still well above normal, that's coming up in the next microclimate forecast.

>> looking forward to that, kari. 6:05. new this morning, an oakland man is behind bars following a standoff with police. this happened on eighth avenue near international boulevard. the armed suspect eventually gave himself up to officers peacefully, at about 7:30 last night. police posted these photos of the scene there on twitter. it's unclear why that man was holed up inside that car in the first place. overnight in oakland police arrested five suspects believed to be involved in the series of robberies. they were taken into custody just after midnight last night, near 98th avenue in macarthur belov boulevard. 6:06, new this morning, san francisco's reportedly launching a new policy supporters believe may save the lives of inmates released from custody. you might recall this story we told you about in july, when alameda county authorities released a female inmate from the santa rita jail during the overnight hours. the woman, jess is ast. louis

was soon found dead at the dublin b.a.r.t. station after an overdose. the sf examiner reports san francisco sheriff vicki hennessey plans to allow inmates to delay their own releases until normal business hours. similar statewide measure is now working its way through the legislature. new this morning, san jose police are reportedly in the midst of a new push to crack down and solve a growing number of burglaries. the recent surge in neighborhood crimes is prompting new concerns even special meetings in places like willow glen. "the mercury news" is reporting in the last month the department launched a new unit specifically focused on investigating burglaries. it includes eight dedicated investigators. this will be the department's second largest investigative team behind its sex crimes unit. >> it is 6:07 right now. a new report on climate change creating waves of concern around the globe. nobel prize winning u.n. panel released its findings in south korea. experts suggest rapid and unprecedented changes will be

required to stem global warming. they are urging a new plan to cut forecasted rising temperatures in half. if not, impacts including flood and droughts and sea level rise may begin to be felt in 20 years. and right now, it's 6:08, we have clear skies and still some drifts of smoke from those brush fires yesterday. live look outside in san jose, let's head to east san jose and evergreen. it will be in the upper 50s and normally we're at 76 degrees, but we're going above that. we'll already be there at noon, continuing into the 80s for the afternoon with a high of 82 degrees. for livermore reaching 85, also 85 in concord, as well as napa. 75 in san francisco and in santa rosa today 86. we will still have the high fire danger for the early hours but we should start to see the winds calming down as we go throughout the day. now as we head over to mike, you have a traffic alert going on. >> i do, kari. it was a crash i told you about, which now has been called a traffic alert by chp.

the bay bridge toll plaza and cocoa county, this side of the bay just fine. lighter than typical for a monday. over here, we do have a lot of slowing that's shown up over the last ten minutes, north 101 at candlestick park, right two lanes are currently blocked because of crash activity approaching the scene. smoother drive on the approach and 280 getting into san francisco no problems through daly city. peninsula with the light easy drive. south bay we have north 101 approaching story, with a slower drive. looks like things are starting to smooth out. chp didn't have any additional information. there may be a crash activity at story. quick peek over here showing you san jose itself northbound 101 through the area. we see more cars traveling north past 280, 680 for our live camera that indicates more traffic flowing past that scene. >> 6:09. coming up next on "today in the bay," a hacking hoax, you might see friends talking about this online that warning for facebook users this morning. plus do silicon valley

fremont, already busy with the clear skies and some drifts of smoke. we're going to start out with some low 60s heading into the upper 70s, and low 80s today. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast for the week coming up in less than five minutes. look at the san mateo bridge, west 92, got a lot of company, some tapping brake lights. no surprises, smooth to the peninsula. on the peninsula a smoother drive as well. willow access to and from highway 101 has been reacquired, opened from the weekend closure. and a very happy monday to you. it's columbus day. the bond market is closed. the equities market stock market will be open for business as usual. we saw stocks fall on friday. they probably will again today as investors wonder about rising interest rates. spacex launched a rocket from vandenberg air force base in california. thrilling people in southern and northern california who posted all kinds of pictures on social

media. its first stage landed successfully, the first west coast landing. interesting data coming out of redfin this morning, showing one in four families selling a house in the south bay have actually lowered the price on the house, but before you think high prices are over, two giant asterisks. number one, sales are always slow in the fall. people don't move after kids go back to school, and two, just because the asking price is lower doesn't mean the sales price is lower, not if there's multiple bids. "the washington post" says the head of google has met secretly with the defense department to discuss google's involvement in something called project maven which would help the military interpret pictures coming from videos from u.s. drones, something google employees say they're against. silicon valley companies are running into a problem that they themselves created. all along, the googles and the

facebooks have encouraged people to bring their whole selves to work, including their personal politics, but that means employees now feel they have a say in what they build at the company, and what the company does. facebook held an all hands meeting on friday after employees were upset about the appearance of a top facebook executive at brett kavanaugh's hearings. facebook vice president joel kaplan is friends with brett kavanaugh and sat behind him during the hearings into alleged sexual assault. facebook says kaplan was making a personal choice, not representing the company, but you can see where politics publicly mixes. as we were talking earlier, this is more than just left/right. this is men and women. this is allegations versus denials. >> many layers. >> many layers and tough for some of those employees to see their boss supporting a man they do not support and don't trust. >> it's hard to separate the two visually when you see someone connected to something. >> it is. >> he went to college with him? >> they went to college

>> on facebook? >> right, anyway, all clear weather and a lot of people are facebooking about the smoke and the brush fires going on all across the bay area yesterday, and here's a live look outside in san francisco, as we start out on this monday morning. here is a look at our temperatures now, they're all over the place. look at here, in morgan hill, it's 50 degrees as you head out the door, but in fairfield, it is 70 degrees, and it's 61 now in san francisco while livermore is at 55 degrees so just all depends on where you are as far as our temperatures this morning, and in some spots it definitely feels cooler this morning, compared to yesterday and out of livermore it's 11 degrees lower than yesterday, when you were walking out the door. now, as we look at concord, and our temperatures trend throughout the day we go from the low 70s at 10:00 to some upper 80s for today, so it's feeling like summer. we have some very low humidity,

forecast 80s and slight cooldown midweek, warming up for the weekend while san francisco will see a lot more sunshine, and mike, you still have more problems popping up. >> despite a lighter overall commute right now, holiday from any businesses, we are seeing a few crashes and problems. trouble spots here, south bay, peninsula and over in the east bay, we start here south bay northbound 101 a slow drive toward story road. the activity still reported in the area, shoulder northbound side but we haven't seen much of a build 85. 87 just slight bits of brake tapping going on there. on the peninsula side northbound 101 this traffic alert issued by chp really jamming up north two lanes are blocked, half your freeway toward candlestick park. sounded like there was an overturned pickup that spun out a crash in the area. no major injuries reported but chp getting work done over there and over here on the east bay, it's eastbound 24 counter commute but sounds like there's a stall inside the eastbound

a lot of chaos. some people were injured, jumping over fences and getting caught in the rush to the exits. police later determined no shots were fired. developing now 6:23, friends and loved ones expressing shock over the deaths of 20 people killed in the weekend limousine crash in upstate new york. >> amy and axel steenberg just one of the couples who died in saturday's crash, this is video from their recent wedding. her three sisters and friends were celebrating amy's birthday. all 18 people in the limo were killed and police say the suv blew a stop sign, plowing into a parked car and killing two people standing nearby. friends are simply stunned here. >> we're a small community and they're all our friends and nobody should ever have to see what happened yesterday. >> investigators are at the scene trying to determine the exact cause. this is the deadliest u.s. transportation accident in almost ten years. 6:24 right now. we have learned a lot since the north bay wildfires.

afternoon. now as we take a live look outside in san jose, the air quality remains the big story today. moderate air quality everywhere except the north bay, because the winds are blowing in from the north, and those fires are just south of there, so we still do have the red flag warning that continues until 9:00. also the wind advisory still breezy out there. we had wind gusts over 55 miles per hour and some critically dry fuels so as you are headed out for schools in the south bay expect temperatures in the low 60s headed into the upper 70s. look ahead to the weekend coming up and mike, you're tracking that traffic alert in san francisco. >> i am not talking about the closure of fremont street. there is an alert for that as well. talking about getting in to san francisco. overall you'll notice the sensors show mostly green, that's great news, mostly red though here from basically sierra point parkway up to candlestick parkway, the overturned pickup truck that has two of your four lanes blocked. half of the northbound freeway

and the southbound side now seeing a slowdown because of the distraction, all the activity again on the northbound side right around candlestick. 280 is clear now and easier lighter drive for most of your commute. the stall at the caldecott is cleared from the eastbound direction but we may have a crash around penol valley road. and more recovery for north 101 at story, the crash cleared a little bit of build for san jose. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:31 right now. n breaking news in fremont a manhunt is under way after an overnight homicide. >> what is going on now, roz plater? >> reporter: that manhunt as you said before is taking place both on the ground and in the air. we're told that police are heavily relying on a drone this morning as they make that search. we're here on charleston way and the end of the street down there

is where the crime scene investigation is centered just at the end of the street there. this is the grimmer neighborhood, not far from grimmer elementary school, and police have cordoned off a rather large perimeter around this neighborhood as they search for that suspect. now here is what we know so far. police say a witness called them around 12:30 this morning after hearing gunshots. police tell us officers found the victim inside the home that had been shot. paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene and now they are searching for a suspect. all we know about that suspect so far is that he is a male, they're saying. so far, no suspect description, no information on the victim being released. they're focusing on this area, this neighborhood, but police say it is possible the suspect may have left the area. there seems to have been a bit of a delay between when the shots were fired and when police were called. likely just a few minutes, but it could have been enough time for the shooter to take off. now, homicide detectives are on the scene, looking for clues at

that home and at one point we saw them searching a backpack so they are looking for clues on the site. they're also canvassing neighbors asking anybody who has any information. we're hoping to get a lot more information. so many questions right now. we're hoping to get some answers at a briefing we're told that will be around 7:00, so about half an hour or so from now, as we get that information we'll pass it along. for now we're live in fremont, i'm roz plater for "today in the bay." >> busy morning there. hopefully they find the person behind this soon, roz, thank you. 6:33, and happening today b.a.r.t. tests its high-tech shake alert system. this is designed to detect major earthquakes, so the trains can slow down before disaster strikes. the trains will reduce speed about 11:00 this morning for the test. all trains and all stations will broadcast that alert to passengers to simulate the early morning earthquake alarm. after the test, b.a.r.t. leaders will join lawmakers ayn seismologists to talk about the expanding shake alert system. the goal here is to someday have it running across the entire west coast.

starting today commuters who park at b.a.r.t.'s west oakland station will have to dig deeper into their pockets. daily rates will be 50 cents e higher totalling $10.50. single day reserve parking rates are going higher to $13. the monthly rate will not be changed right now, but it will go higher november 1st. west oakland has higher parking rates than every other b.a.r.t. station due to extremely high demand. maximum daily rates at all other stations are no more than $3. today marks the one-year anniversary of the deadly and destructive north bay wildfairf that destroyed thousands of homes and killed dozens of people. tom jensen was one of the first to arrive on the scene and he joins from santa rosa to revisit the unbelievable evening and how the north bay responded. >> reporter: we were on that all night a year ago tonight talking

back and forth with you and marcus, as so much was going on at that fire scene. lot of ceremonies going on around the whole north bay. these crews here are breaking down from a community event last night, moving the port-a-potties out of here, going to another event. more events through the week here in the north bay to commemorate the anniversary, including tonight here in santa rosa. right here where we are right now they are going to hand out sidewalk chalk so people can draw on the sidewalks here in the downtown and express their views of what happened, and what they're feeling in chalk on the community here. in sonoma last night they rang the town hall bell 44 times for the people who were lost in the fire, and they also honored the heroic efforts of the first responders who really gave 110% from day one for weeks and months, and they also shared

stories, the survivors, including the mayor of the then mayor of sonoma, who said the fires changed her life forever. >> for me, the experience of suddenly carrying the kaegt of not on -- weight of the 11,000 who live in the city and their safety but the entire valley, of feeling like i was personally responsible for everybody. >> your finances change, the way you structured your life in every area was different in one day. >> reporter: those survivors, those homeowners like that lady you heard right there, some of them are rebuilding. others it could be years to rebuild. some may never be able to rebuild, because they are underinsured or in one case here in santa rosa, the water system is destroyed in the coffey park area. those people have to fix that water system. hundreds of millions of dollars. they can't get their homes insured or rebuilt until that's done and that could take a

couple of years, according to city officials here. we're live in santa rosa, tom jensen, "today in the bay." >> so hard for so many of these people. and the images themselves, tom, are seared into our brains. being here on "today in the bay" for 18 1/2 years, i've never seen some of the things that we saw that morning, and you were out there live. >> reporter: what's that incredible, that shot that i think we're looking at right now, the gurney coming out with the nurses and the doctors pushing it out, that patient out with ivs hooked up and oxygen tanks and staff members loading patients into their own personal cars and into buses, and taking them to other hospitals like kaiser san rafael and some even to sacramento, and then to other areas, where they could be treated and then the weeks that followed. the devastation even the next morning before it even became light right behind the hospital, we saw an entire community of homes that was just to the ground, burned to the ground

within an hour or two, those flames were just awful and the winds of course spanning. i was afraid last night when we saw the winds come in, really gusting, that we might have another night like that, with the fire in sonoma county especially burning. who knew what was going to happen there, taken looks like maybe they've got that under control. >> it was really, really amazing. thank you very much. tom jensen from north county. it's amazing to see those images once again. in just a few hours, several events are being held in wine country to mark today's anniversary, at 10:30 this morning the napa county sheriff will reveal new safety concepts in the event of the next emergency and tonight city of santa rosa will hold a bell ringing event to honor the victims of last october's deadly wildfires. that starts at 6:00 tonight at the old courthouse square. just posted on the nbcbayarea.com we have north bay fires features page, it has all of our coverage including all of the new things from today going

affordable housing. >> the city sounl approved a $29 million plan to build three new housing developments in the mt. eden neighborhood. the project will include 259 new apartments for low income residents. two palo alto high schools are trying to crack down on students vaping during school hours. the school is installing more cameras on campus and adding staff in areas where students have been caught vaping before. president trump will introduce the newest supreme court justice to the world later this afternoon. >> scott mcgrew has been sworn in but he'll be sworn in again. >> this time in public, marcus, around 4:30, we think, our time this afternoon. the senate voted to confirm kavanaugh saturday and as you point out he was sworn in for real on sunday. john roberts head of the court there did the honors. kavanaugh will be on the bench starting on tuesday.

mitch mcconnell over the weekend said he thought all of the fuss, his words, about brett kavanaugh, would blow over soon. he said he'd also be open to confirming another nominee as late as 2020, the year of the next presidential election. when president obama was president, mcconnell said nobody should be nominated for the supreme court in a presidential election year and he blocked merritt garland. >> how did you get home? i don't remember. how did you get there, i don't remember? where is the place? i don't remember. how many years ago was it? i don't know. i don't know. >> that was president trump mocking dr. ford during a rally in mississippi last week. ford's attorneys this morning tell msnbc dr. ford was horrified to hear the president of the united states make fun of her, and ford is still in hiding. >> her family has been through a lot. they are not living at home. it's going to be quite some time before they're able to live at home. the threats have been unending.

>> yep. today would be a good day to go out there because the weather is not going to be too bad. >> not bad, but warm for especially san francisco compared to what we're normally seeing, and we do still have the high fire danger for at least the morning hours. let's look at our red flag warning and where it is in effect, all of these areas shaded in red, and this continues once again through 9:00, a wind advisory as we see the gusts kicking up over 55 miles per hour, and such dry fuels out there, so any sparks could spread quickly with a brush fire, as we go throughout the day our humidity staying very low, only 17% in livermore during the afternoon, 21% in fairfield and concord. so when the humidity drops this low below 30%, we also watch for the potential of any quickly spreading wildfires. there should be good recovery overnight, that means that humidity values will be coming up especially compared to this morning. so we will see some improving conditions and it feels very

shore freeway, westbound 80 at richmond parkway, your slow lane blocked, chp clarified that, why we see slowing off the carquinez bridge. there is a smoother flow of traffic around the bay a lighter volume of traffic with this holiday, this federal holiday for a lot of businesses, and that's why northbound 101 could be worse but it could be much better. northbound 101 jammed approaching sierra point parkway, candlestick park we have two right lanes blocked, southbound side jammed up from the 280 interchange. stay on 280 if you can, an easy, smooth drive out of san francisco or even into san francisco through daly city. over on the tri valley we're talking about west 580 your commute direction there is a disabled truck over here at san ramon road, the one that's causing the problem and the backup a couple of fender benders in the backup at hacienda and another around tassal tassalahara. folks may cut through 84 and also toward stanley, if you hit

here an oakland man is behind bars this morning following a standoff with police. this happened on eighth avenue. this is near international boulevard. the armed suspect eventually gave himself up to officers peacefully, this was around 7:30 last night. police posted these photos on the screen here on twitter. et cetera auncle it's unclear why that manholed up in the car in the first place. san francisco launching a new policy supporters believe may save the lives of inmates released from custody. you may recall this story we told you about it here on "today in the bay" back in july, when alameda county authorities released a female inmate from the santa rita jail overnight. that woman, jessica st. louis was found dead at a dublin b.a.r.t. station that had been closed. she died of an overdose. san francisco sheriff vicki hennessey plans to allow inmates to delay their own releases until normal business hours so

they can find adequate transportation. new this rmorning, san jose police are in the midst of a push to crack down and solve a growing number of burglaries. recent surge in neighborhood crimes is prompting it in neighborhoods like willow glen. the department launched a new unit specifically focusing on the investigating robberies. this will include eight dedicated investors and it will be the department's second largest investigative team behind sex crimes unit. the two candidates for governor will square off later today. democrat gavin newsom and republican john cox will take part in a debate for the first time since the june primary. the radio matchup is being hosted by kqed and starts at 10:00 this morning. recent polls show newsom in the lead. you may have more food options in alameda county as the health department works on a plan to allow pop-up restaurants today.

simply put, county gold has not kept up with pop-up restaurants and that movement so the goal is to bring them in to code compliance for health and safety of the eating public. the proposal would allow existing permitted facilities to host pop-ups. alameda county's pop-up process could be fully baked by december. 6:58. one phase of the repair work on san franciscos anew transit center is set to end this week. the joint powers authority say things are back on track to reopen fremont street friday and the focus will be on shoring up first street. the good news is traffic on first street will not be affected during the day. it will only shut down overnight. cracked beams also have not been found on that side, but it has a very similar design to the problem spot they found along fremont street. >> once they open that street there will be no more traffic at all. >> wouldn't that be nice to wave a little wand? >> wish it was that simple. >> no way, no, i have to report something. >> and you can, in a moment.

now we want to talk about the weather today. kind of warmer in san francisco today. >> still very warm and doesn't it feel like we're headed toward the middle of october. we're going to see temperatures reaching into the mid 80s today, still some breezy winds and our usual high fire danger that will continue the next several days highs in the 80s. san francisco along the coast mid-70s today but cooling down midweek. the traffic wand that makes everything go away? >> is not working right now, not for the peninsula. overall the bay's drive is a lighter volume today. columbus day or in san francisco, i think we talked about indigenous people observed for some places and a lot of businesses. here on the peninsula we are not getting a break. northbound 101 still have the right two lanes blocked at candlestick park, the crash involved an overturned pickup truck, 280 is clear and the other crashes cleared from the tri valley and the east bay. that's good news. >> always look for the good news. that's what's happening "today in the bay." we'll be back at 7:25 with a live local news update.
