wildfires, wine country works toward recovery. the changes being made and how they could save lives when the next disaster strikes. "today in the bay" continues right now. good morning to you. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. cool start, grab a sweater? >> a cool start but a very nice afternoon and we are looking at temperatures going from the 50s to most of us only seeing some 70s today. let's get you out the door, a live look in oakland where skies are all clear. we're going to get a lot of sunshine today as we head over toward antioch, seeing that morning drive where the heater may be on for a little while. it will be in the upper 50s but we'll switch it over to rolling down the windows with our highs in the upper 70s there, and in san jose, if you're on your way out the door to diridon station, yes, you need a jacket. it will be in the upper 50s but a very comfortable afternoon. we'll talk about what's ahead for the rest of the week and mike, you're tracking a crash in fremont. >> we're looking toward the big

map and seeing that overall we're just getting started with our patterns but we have a couple of crashes 680 southbound, coming down out of fremont and over toward mission boulevard. i'm still tracking them, no lanes are blocked but watching for a little bit of slowing as there are some vehicles on the shoulder south 680 around mission. toward the bay bridge a smooth, easy drive and slowing you expect forever pittsburg and bay point and the metering lights on at the bay bridge toll plaza as well. palo alto, we still have flashing lights over on the shoulder, this is north approaching willow. the earlier traffic break early this morning, we cleared that by about 5:00. we had a lot of slowing but since then no problems on the peninsula, guys at least for highway 101. you have a peninsula report. we want to get straight to breaking news along the san mateo county coast. one person is badly hurt after an overnight house fire north of half moon bay. >> it's a story we've been bringing you since we went on air at 4:30 this morning. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in moss beach.

he's been talking to investigators and some witnesses out there, too. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura and marcus. we're still positioned oen lancaster boulevard. i believe the fire engines will be leaving soon so we'll make this live report fairly quick. the house a total loss, why there's multiple fire crews here to put out this fire, that home at a total loss. here is the new information or the information we gathered from coast side fire. they were called out here roughly around 2:55 a.m., called for a structure fire, when they showed up, they saw it was a house fire and turned quickly from a one-alarm fire to a two-alarm fire and when they arrived they said there were three people inside, a mother and father and an adult sun between dogs were in that home. they say that the father experienced some burn injuries. the burn injuries are unknown how serious those are but we

know he was transported by ground to a nearby burn center. for those folks that aren't familiar with the area, it can get fairly foggy and coast fire said they weren't able to air lift that father to a burn center, that's why they had to transport him by ground ambulance. here they are talking about the difficulty of battling this fire on this hill. >> it's access and just being able to get around the structure itself with the vegetation so it's one of our biggest concerns was to keep it to the structure that was involved and protect buildings on both sides. >> reporter: live on lancaster boulevard, a total loss after a home fire takes over. engines will be clearing out soon but investigators will remain on the scene for several hours as they try to determine what caused the house fire in the first place. we're live in moss beach, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you. 6:0 right now. supreme court justice brett kavanaugh takes the bench this

morning with an apology from the president. this as the president hits the campaign trail. nbc's tracie potts is live on capitol hill for us. both parties say they are ready for the fight ahead. >> they do, and we thought the fight was behind us with kavanaugh but now both democrats and republicans say they are using the energy that they saw, remember the demonstrations here, all of that energy to pour in to the midterm elections in november. >> on behalf of our nation, i want to apologize -- >> reporter: a rare apology as justice brett kavanaugh takes the ninth seat on the u.s. supreme court. >> what happened to the kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process. >> the senate confirmation process was contentious and emotional. that process is over. my focus now is to be the best justice i can be. >> reporter: republicans say defending kavanaugh energized

their voters. president trump's hitting the road this week to keep the fire hot in four key races. >> we finally discovered the one thing that would fire up the republican base and we didn't think of it. >> there's a lot at stake. >> reporter: democrats were already fired up. >> november is coming! >> reporter: but experts predict gender, not party, will determine this election. >> the gender gap is on steroids right now. >> we could be surprised at the scale of the turnout among women including younger women in this country.

with the fire still burning in solano county is 80% contained. so far flames scorched close to a thousand acres. the fire destroyed one home and another building nearby. one person was hurt. right now police searching for a bank robber, this photo was taken from surveillance. this man walked into the u.s. bank on grant avenue and demanded money from a teller friday. he took off in a blue chevrolet sedan.

still no sign of a person who shot a man to death inside his own bedroom. we covered this story as it broke overnight yesterday here on "today in the bay," it happened on charleston way near fremont's grimmer elementary school. officers arrived to find a man shot and killed. witnesses say they heard gunshots just after midnight and one witness say they saw someone take off on a bicycle after the shooting. police do not believe the shooting was random. new this morning, house leaders in southern california raising new concerns about an epidemic being spread by fleas. typhus is a bacterial disease that can also be spread by lice. health leaders issued a warning after nearly 60 reported cases across los angeles county. experts say most of those patients are homeless. typhus is not the same thing as typhoid, which is a food-borne illness and death from typhus fever is extremely rare. also new this morning, bay area innovators are working to make a dent in

clearing trash from the ocean. >> the group known as ocean cleanup is heading to the great pacific garbage patch to collect plastic from the water, halfway between hawaii and california. it's blanketed with discarded junk including plastic bottles and bags. the nonprofit recently built its cleanup system at the former alameda naval station. it was tested in bay area waters. right now it's 6:08, as you get ready to head out the door we're watching light patches of fog over the bay. live look at the bay bridge this morning, as you get ready to head out. air quality still remains an issue, so we will have an air quality advisory in effect until later on tonight, that's mostly for the north bay, the east bay and the south bay, where we will get drifts of smoke and hazy skies. as we head out the door this morning, getting the kids ready for school in livermore it's going to be a chilly start, in the mid-50s with mostly clear skies but we're headed up to the upper 70s for early afternoon as

you go pick them up, it will be very comfortable. we'll talk about more of our microclimates coming up and mike, you're seeing more slowing through fremont. >> i am, kari, for 680 southbound so your commute direction over here on the map this section. everything else moves smoothly. more traffic volume than yesterday which was a holiday for a lot of schools and parents as well i guess. we're looking at two crashes for 680 south between the missions, there's mission north and mission south. that connects the funnel for 680 and 880. slower drive headed toward the washington irveington district area as it crashes over on the shoulder there, the mission north and just past that approaching mission south another crash which may involve a number of vehicles on the shoulder there. no lanes reported blocked but we see more slowing. of course all this traffic coming out of the livermore and pleasanton area will add to that and that may be why we're seeing more slowing than we had before. more traffic across that san mateo bridge westbound is your commute direction and moves just fine and easy drive but slower

google, alphabet in the news. it's set to show off new devices in new york city today. it's really run into a pr disaster, after the "wall street journal" revealed google social network google plus had exposed people's data online. now it wasn't hacked as best we know. it just exposed. but google didn't tell anybody about it. google's taken a very extreme step, they're going to shut down google plus permanently. to be fair, almost nobody used google plus. if you signed up for it years ago, your information is still out there and could have been exposed. i recommend you delete your account. you go into your google account through gmail or youtube, delete google plus. you can do that without deleting your overall google account. apple says a blockbuster report from bloomberg claims that the chinese added a little chip, a spy chip.

apple says it is simply not true. nothing had been added to apple products or apple mother boards. bloomberg stands by its story. in fact, the magazine put it on its cover but apple wrote a letter to congress which it says "bloomberg provided us with no evidence to substantiate their claims and internal investigations concluded their claims were simply wrong." we'll be keeping an eye out for developments there. and facebook is out with a set of rather mysterious devices mysterious because it's not clear what they do compared to what other devices already do. their video conferencing screens, one can follow you around as you move and they have a smart camera on the top that knows where you are. they also have alexa in them so you can ask questions like any alexa device. my hesitation if you have a laptop or iphone or ipad, you can do skype. >> facetime. >> that kind of thing. you may already have an alexa, those have been on the market for years now, so what it does

specifically that makes it better is not clear to me, but facebook will introduce those and they're trying to get in on the game. >> i don't know. hmm. >> i may pass on that one. >> another gadget. i have gadgets right here. why do i need something else? 6:16 and spacex celebrating another successful launch and landing of its falcon 9 rocket. in case you missed it, sunday's launch lit up the skies in southern california. elon musk also celebrated shortly afterward at a restaurant near vandenberg air force base where the falcon 9 launched. the restaurant is posting photos of musk congratulating the team, even signing an astronaut helmet. most mental health experts agree just about any luxury out there can potentially get you hooked. if netflix or binge watching is your weakness, you may want to use this as a cautionary tale. a young man in india is now receiving treatment for his netflix addiction. he admits he watches more than

seven hours a day in part to escape from real life pressures which for him include finding a job. a recent cnbc report found the average subscriber streams a little under one hour every day. i'm sure a lot of you are saying why don't you look for a job instead of watching tv. >> one of the guys that keeps track of how many times a certain product is on a tv show, and we would probably watch that. >> there you go, maybe you could find a use for those skills. >> follow his passion. your passion is weather? >> looks pretty good out there. we'll have some beautiful weather today and the next couple of days, and then it gets hot again. we'll talk about that. let's get out the door this morning with a live look outside in san jose, with a clear start. we have sunny skies in the forecast for today. the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. we'll start in the south bay, as we get a look at what you'll feel as you head out the door. all of us right now in the 50s as we are seeing some cool

temperatures to start, so as you are making your way out the door, maybe heading to the pleasant hill b.a.r.t. station we're going to be in the upper 50s through 8:00 and sunshine, we'll see temperatures warming up and it's going to be a really nice day. as you get ready this morning, let's talk about the frizz factor, because how many times are you going to run the flat iron through your hair? i think it's a nice day but it is humid to start, as we go into the afternoon, the humidity levels will be dropping so we're going to have a nice smooth hair day after we get through these early hours and a light wind not as windy as yesterday. our high temperatures today heading into the low 80s for the inland valleys, will be up to 79 in napa and in santa rosa. san francisco 68 degrees and 80 today in palo alto. upper 70s for the south bay. here is an update on hurricane michael, now it is a category 2 hurricane. while you were sleeping this strengthened over those very warm gulf waters and if you know someone in the florida panhandle

or if you have travel plans, you want to make sure you keep updated on this. now wind speeds at 100 miles per hour. it's moving to the north-northwest at about 12 miles per hour, with a forward speed over the next couple of days it is expected to strengthen and possibly make landfall late wednesday into early thursday, and then move quickly off towards the east. so we'll be watching that. this could make a lot of big headlines as the storm surge will be the main threat. bringing it back home slightly cooler temperatures by tomorrow and warming up, look at the weekend forecast, inland valleys reaching into the upper 80s. yes, this is mid-october, and it's going to be very warm and dry. san francisco sees those temperatures mostly in the 60s. mike, you were checking in on that crash in san jose. >> i am kari. we haven't seen a lot of change as far as the traffic flow but now we have a set of flashing lights that's arrived in the center divide area. tow truck perhaps and we talked about the need for a traffic break, they want to clear that

vehicle from the center divide. good news this person got some assistance. bad news, this may create some slowing northbound 101 right here as folks approach that 680/280 interchange coming in your commute direction. couple of crashes one at kurter in on the shoulder for 87, one at camden for 17 southbound. that's counter commute and it's clear from lanes. this is your commute direction, this is coming into froe monemoo crashes one at mission north and just before you get to mission south. both show orange instead of red. speed sensors are starting to improve. we have a number of vehicles here at the southern crash and the bulk of the commute out of sunol approaching the northern crash. that is an issue for the tri valley but no other problems for 680, just the build through pleasantton. the maze moves nicely but slowing down the southeast shore freeway through berkeley. 6:20 we expect to see that anyway. the bay bridge reports of a disabled vehicle around the treasure island curve. we see more slowing but a lot of times that's what is the optical

expert care for every new beginning. welcome back, everyone. continuing coverage for you this morning. no real end in sight to the bitter hotel strike involving bay area marriott hotel workers. workers first walked off the job about six days ago. the union vowing to stay away until new labor deal is reached. the strike is affecting more than half a dozen marriott owned hotels in san francisco, san jose and oakland. it could affect two conference this is weekend as well in san francisco at the moscone center, including the anesthesiology conference in oracle's open world. nbc bay area is still

responding to north bay fire victims one year after the fire storm destroyed so many homes. >> consumer investigator chris chmura says they are frustrated with the process of trying to get the money to rebuild from their insurance companies. >> insurance payments are still very inconsistent. you can see it in neighborhoods. many empty lots where homeowners say insurance companies have not yet paid them in full but right next door new houses, ready for move-in, where other insurance companies paid their claims promptly. >> i wish they did it for everyone and i wish they is it it in all aspects of our insurance. >> what's standing in the way of full payouts more than a year after the fires? an unexpectedly complex process plus lots of paperwork. tonight at 6:00, why some insurance companies say it's necessary and what all of us can do right now to try to prepare for the insurance battle so many people in the north bay are fighting. if you have a consumer complaint let us know, the number is

probably shed those layers later in the day. welcome to the bay area, right? good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> announce >> and i'm marcus washington. to get a better look at the weather we head over to meteorologist kari hall. little sweater this morning. >> sweater, hot coffee, anything to warm you up. live look in palo alto as you get ready to start out, temperatures low 60s at 10:00 to the slow 70s by early afternoon. it's going to be a beautiful day, a little bit warmer in walnut creek where we start out at 57 degrees at 8:00, and then at noon, it's going to be perfect, lunch outside 76 degrees and then some low 80s for the early afternoon hours. we'll talk about all of our microclimates and what to expect as our temperatures continue to fall as we head over to mike, you're seeing a few crashes around fremont. >> kari, there are three crashes reported in this area between sunola and mission boulevard south. southbound 680 is your commute

direction, crash mission south, crash just after mission north. those both caused early slowing. they started to ease as far as the volume of traffic because there may be another crash on the approach coming out of sunol so three crashes through this area. no lanes reported blocked but this will be a distraction for all the folks coming off of pleasanton and off the dublin interchange. but so far the rest of your commute looking a little bit mild for 631 on a tuesday. the south bay build for the san jose route now kicking in, no major problems. we did have this 101 northbound the crash in the center divide that did clear but the camera is having an issue so i'll reboot that. back to you guys. >> thanks, mike. new this morning, the dmv is saying it improperly registered hundreds of people to vote including some people who are not united states citizens. >> "today in the bay's" bob riddell is live outside the dmv office in concord. this is concerning. how did it happen? >> reporter: the dmv says a

"processing error." the dmv and the california department of technology have notified the secretary of state for the state of california, ask this yesterday to let them know about 1,500 people were improperly registered to vote by the dmv. this taking place between late april and late september, april being when the new motor voter law went into effect. a number of those people are non-citizens including a canadian man who is a green card holder and in the united states illegally, who is just trying to replace his driver's license. the dmv says that none of those improperly registered are in the state el illegally. it sounds like everyone has documentation. again, this is an issue of them not being u.s. citizens and therefore not qualified to register to vote. the secretary of state expressed frustration and disappointment over these persistent errors. he's calling for a new investigation of the dmv and is canceling the incorrect registrations.

any absentee ballots that went out have bar codes guaranteeing those votes won't get tallied. last month, the dmv made mistakes on 23,000 other registrations, errors including wrong political party affiliation, wrong language preference and mistaken preference to vote by mail. reporting live here in concord, bob riddell, "today in the bay." >> all right, bob, thank you. >> it is 6:33 right now. vaping is a huge trend among teens. it's largely odorless, which means that parents, you might not know that your kids are doing it. that's why one santa clara county school district is looking to inform parents on what to look for and what the hazards of vaping can be on growing bodies and brains. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in morgan hill with what the district is doing and kris, this really could help a lot of parents around the bay area. >> reporter: that's the hope, we don't know how many kids have been busted vaping at school or on campus because a lot of

districts don't track those numbers separately from other offenses under the tobacco policy so we don't know how many kids are doing this. what we do know for sure though is that the fda considers teen vaping an epidemic and ordered ecigarette makers to come up with a plan to be less appealing to teens. recent uscf study found cancer causing chemicalless in the bodies of teens who vape a.vape. school resource officer told us the devices are harmless looking that students are vaping in bathrooms and behind teacher's backs. >> it dissipates so quickly, by the time the teacher turns around, it's gone. there's very little odor. so it's not like a regular cigarette or a marijuana joint, where it's very obvious and the smell lasts for a long time.

>> reporter: officer brandon talked with teachers and staff back in march. we covered that back then, and the district wants to do the same with parents to make sure we know what to look for and we know and our students know the legal ramifications if they are caught. he says to talk with your teen about the legal and health impacts of vaping. he says to watch their purchases especially online, where they can use a prepaid credit card and they can lie about their age. you have to be 21 to buy an ecigarette. he also said don't count on the smell of smoke to give them away, and if you see a charger with the circular port, ask them what that's for because that's what many vapes use to charge. if they tell you it's for their cell phone you know they're busted. tonight's meeting here at the morgan hill school district headquarters tonight at 6:00. there will be child care and spanish translation as well. in morgan hill, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> they look like the little usb

things, too. thanks a lot. >> 6:35 right now. california leaders are trying to get word out about free money to retrofit your home. the state has a special program providing $3,000 to anyone who does a seismic retrofit. state leader also gather to mark the 150th anniversary of the big quake on the hayward quality. they also plan to talk about how homeowners can tap into retrofit grant program. develop riging right now th latest radar images above the gulf of mexico. hurricane michael is taking aim at the florida coast. it's now believed michael may make landfall as a category 3 storm fueled by the gulf's warm waters. michael is causing damage in cuba. by the time it arrives on the panhandle it may bring up to a foot of rain. residents there are preparing for the worst. >> i want to get done, everything done. i don't want to do things at the last minute. early prep is the best way to go for me. >> some predict michael may be the strongest storm to hit the panhandle in decades.

it's expected to make landfall as soon as tomorrow. a live look at sfo. earlier this year city leaders renamed the terminal one after harvey milk. they unveiled images for the upcoming redesign, including new artwork and a signature exhibit honoring the one-time supervisor. as part of the redesign airport leaders will also talk about their new crowd sourcing campaign to display historic artifacts. the bay area is one of the most challenging places to sail in the world. the oracle founder there wants everyone to know this. larry ellison is working to create a sailing league and there will be events here in the bay area. so you might remember america's cup was held here in the bay area a couple years ago. mike, confusion on the roads, confusion on the water, it's everywhere. >> i'll bring my sailor cap, maybe go out as thurston howell iii. >> i will be lovie. >> that was only supposed to be a three-hour tour, a three-hour

tour. the south bay your commute is getting a little bit longer, not three hours but a little slower because of the volume of traffic builds through san jose and silicon valley but getting down there from the tri valley, this continues to be the issue this morning. with the slower build, we still have pleasanton with a little slowing and now a lot more slowing down toward washington and washington district i should say, mission north is where you see some slowing, a crash involves a number of vehicles on the shoulder. no lanes are blocked but we still have this big slowdown. people keep calling the same incident in to chp for that same area over the last 20 minutes we've seen that continue over there. san jose i did hit that camera and we reset it. you see the center divide is clear but we still have that crash activity over on the shoulder north 101, north of 680 and a quick peek at the bay bridge, it looks fine but there is a disabled truck reported in that tunnel but it's over off to the left side, so stay to the right if you can and let them do their work. >> mike, thanks. take a look at this, this morning. taking you live to al beer can

right now at 6:43, we're about 30 minutes away from sunrise but you can see the orange glow coming over the horizon. as we look at the south bay, our temperatures are going to be chilly this morning, heading out the door, upper 50s and then look at this, our temperatures will be very nice, upper 70s today by 2:00 this afternoon. we're going to see our temperatures dip and then rise a lot by the weekend. i'll talk more about that coming up in less than five minutes. we're seeing the speeds dip right here, the middle numbers

680 southbound through sunol into fremont, there is a crash there, which actually i got an update, one lane is blocked. meanwhile, we're seeing the volume build right here westbound across that richmond to san rafael bridge. thanks, mike. we're following that breaking news for you, a live look in moss beach near half moon bay where a fire gutted a home and we believe it left one person seriously injured. that fire started around 2:00 p.m. on lancaster boulevard. not far from moss beach park. firefighters say three people inside made it out but at one point we heard scanner traffic with rescue crews calling for an air lift unit. one neighbor said he heard screams and said he did anything he could to help out. >> yeah, we tried, but it's just a big explosion, and we couldn't, we just, we just couldn't do it. it's too big, it got big and we tried and we couldn't. it was so bad. very bad.

>> firefighters are not confirming anything about possible injuries. at :44, a new twist in the seemingly endless battle to provide scooters in san francisco. lyft still wants to be a player. the san francisco saga surrounding dockless scooters is complicated. earlier this year city leaders stopped it all together to come up with a plan. this summer, the city granted one-year permits to scoot and skip, two startups. "the chronicle" reports lyft is ask the mayor to reconsider the decision. three other companies recently filed an appeal, calling the bidding process unfair. this week kanye west is set to meet with president trump at the white house. the "new york times" reporting west will speak to president trump about job opportunities for former convicts and manufacturing jobs as well, this is in chicago, which is west's hometown. you'll remember kanye west's wife, kim kardashian met with president trump earlier this year and convinced him to commute one woman's drug-related jail sentence.

kanye west was on "saturday night live" a couple of weeks ago wearing a "make america great again" hat. president trump saying brett kavanaugh is innocent of the allegations against him. >> innocent, yes. he said those very words, president trump held a ceremonial swearing in for kavanaugh at the white house on monday evening. kavanaugh will join the supreme court, which is already in session today. during the ceremony, the president apologized to kavanaugh for the very long and very controversial confirmation process. >> on behalf of our nation, i want to apologize to brett and the entire kavanaugh family for the terrible pain and suffering you have been forced to endure. >> kavanaugh was approved 50-48 in the senate, even after allegations by dr. christine blasey ford. some americans believed ford's allegations, but a number of republicans have split the

difference. some say they believe dr. ford was attacked, but not by brett kavanaugh, that she's somehow not remembering it correctly, they say. the president at a rally yesterday declared the whole thing a hoax, and then said this monday evening. >> and with that, i must state that you, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent. thank you. >> president trump said the people demonstrating against the kavanaugh confirmation are paid professionals. though he's adjusted that declaration a bit this morning, as he tweeted "the paid d.c. protesters are now really ready to protest because they haven't gotten their checks," in other words they weren't paid. to put a fine point the president is saying the paid professionals are unpaid paid professionals. the president headed to iowa to campaign today. we'll be watching that today. you can reach me on twitter, watch all the different developments. i'm @scottmcgrew.

some mostly clear skies. we're still dealing with the drifts of smoke and that fire over solano county and the drifts of smoke will give us some hazy skies over parts of the north bay, the east bay, as well as the south bay. the wind kind of blows it away from the peninsula for the most part. live look outside with clear skies over fremont. our temperature trend at 8:00 we're at 59 degrees, 10:00 63 and reaching into the mid-70s in the afternoon. check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen as we head down to the south county and get a look at your workout forecast. if you're going out early in the morning, watch out for the patches of fog, and temperatures will be in the mid-50s through about 8:00 but if you wait a little bit later to get outside, it's going to be a lot more comfortable, and getting the kids ready for school this morning in livermore, it's going to be a cool start to the day. you will need a jacket walking to school, but later on, as the

kids head out for recess, getting home from school it's going to be in the upper 70s, eventually hitting 81 degrees later on today. in concord, expect a high of 83, and 74 in oakland. in palo alto, reaching 80 degrees today. so as you're getting dressed, you see the clear sunrise in the south bay. it is a chilly start. you need a jacket but later on, short sleeves and shorts will keep you comfortable. here is a quick update on hurricane michael, right now it has been upgraded to a category 2. wind speeds of 100 miles per hour and this could possibly strengthen up to a category 3 before it makes landfall over the florida panhandle on wednesday. we'll be watching that. inland our temperatures will go down and then back up. it's going to be a hot weekend for the valleys around the bay area. and mike, now you're taking us through the tri valley. >> we have problems getting through the tri valley, out of the tri valley into the south bay. overall look at the peninsula, we'll distract you with good news. the south bay we're starting to build, pushing north through san jose. new crash approaching the silver creek area but so far 101 just

that typical build approaching capital expressway. it's over here out of the tri valley for southbound 680, we have this traffic bogging down approaching mission boulevard north. we have a crash that's over on the shoulder, and now another crash may be blocking your hov lane which was your relief valve and so now we have a slower drive building. let's show you our waze map. waze has computed out three routes. we'll show you two. the green one shows you out of san ramon down through the backup. the build through plezanton and the crashes approaching mission boulevard south where a lot of commuters head down into the south bay. that takes you about 56 minutes, ten minutes faster still than taking this other route. lot of folks are debating whether or not to go through castro valley and looking over there toward 880 southbound that is longer and slower drive because of the build through hayward now approaching that san mateo bridge. so waze will help make sure the route you were going to take is the right one or nbc bay area wazers you'll join up and give us better advice there at the

all are documented. the secretary of state's office is now deleting those registrations. happening today, we should learn more about the recovery and rebuilding in napa. now more than a year after the wine country wildfires napa supervisors are set to receive an important series of reports at tonight's board meeting and a test of the wireless alert system. there are so many stories to tell from the fires. we've gathered many of them for weeks and put them together in a special called wine country wildfires, it reairs saturday at 3:00 p.m. the fire is still burning in solano county is 80% contained. flames scorched close to 5,000 acres. yesterday embers sparked more flames near sassoon city. the fire destroyed one home and another building nearby. no one was hurt. continuing coverage, no sign of the person who shot a man to death, this is inside of his own bedroom. we covered this story as it broke overnight yesterday on "today in the bay." it happened on charleston way in

fremont, this is near grimmer neighborhood there. officers arrived to find a man had been shot and killed. witnesses say that they heard gunshots after midnight and one person says they saw someone take off on a bicycle after that shooting. police do not believe that shooting was random. 6:57. new this morning, heal health l in southern california are raising concerns of an epidemic spread by fleas. typhus can also be spread by lice. nearly 60 reported cases across l.a. county. experts say most of those patients are homeless. typhus is not the same thing as typhoid, which is a food-borne illness and death from typhus fever is extremely rare. morgan hill school leaders want to educate parents about the dangers of vaping and ecigarettes. tonight there say meeting at 6:00 at the morgan unified district office. the goal is to bring attention

to the warning signs. some say students are secretly vaping in bathrooms and because it's odorless it's often not detected. gunshots shows at the contra costa fairgrounds may become a thing of the past. supervisors will debate banning any gun sales at the fairgrounds in antioch. the particular ban is more of a challenge. that's because the fairgrounds is actually owned and operated by the state, not contra costa county. supporters of the ban argue among other things the fairgrounds located right near antioch high school. today a beloved bakery in san francisco's mission district will close for good. la victoria bakery has been a staple in the city for more than 65 years. staff members say a family dispute is part of the reason for the closure leaving customers disappointed. the shop's baker says she plans to open another kitchen over in the dogpatch neighborhood. >> hungry now. >> um-hum.
