coco county over to the bay bridge. a nice drive across into san francisco. temporary transit center in effect. down to the south bay, a smooth drive as well. no problems. locally, things look calm but what do you have for today's forecast? >> looks pretty nice and cool as you get ready to head out this morning as we get a look at the san ramone school day forecast as you're headed out. our temperatures will only be in the low 50s and we'll see another beautiful day as you go back to pick them up from school, it will be in the low 70s in san jose. on your way out the door, look how cool it will be to start. only low 50s. at noon, we're at 66 degrees. maybe you'll want to take the lunch outside. here's an update on tropical storm michael right now. still producing wind speeds of 50 miles per hour. and this storm is starting to race off towards the north and east forward speed at about 21 miles per hour. still causing a lot of damage and the potential of some tornadoes as we go through the day and parts of south carolina.

then heading into north carolina as we go into the afternoon. for more information on this and what to expect with this storm for parts of the east coast for today, i'll send it over to you, laura. >> thank you very much. as you well know, the sun is coming up on the east coast. the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm. one of the hardest hit areas is panama city beach. this is drone video. this is a high school gym completely destroyed. heavy winds responsible for the devastation that happened really throughout the city. nbc's jay gray live with a look at the damage from the ground. jay, it just seems so devastating. >> reporter: overwhelming. we have evidence of some of that wind damage behind us, small business just ravaged by those winds. look, this was really a dual

threat as it came ashore. you had the winds, which tore apart everything in its path. in some areas it looks more like some type of tornado than a hurricane. just that intense and that rough on some of the structures. i think with the sun up we'll find more across the region. then you have the water. we've seen from the storm surge and the rain really devastating flooding. that will take some time to recede. also take time to those who call this area home to understand what's been done here. many stunned by what they've seen to this point. >> i've never been in one like this. i was in hurricane dennis and that was scary enough. >> utter destruction. utter destruction. a lot of good people are going to be hurting. >> reporter: yeah, no question about that as really the clean-up, the recovery begins

here a day later. once the storm has moved through and still causing problems. this was an historic storm. it was the strongest october hurricane ever to make landfall in the u.s. the first ever category 4 storm to strike the florida panhandle, which is pretty amazing when you think about how many storms this area has had to deal with over the years. at 155 miles an hour when it made landfall, the strongest winds we've seen from a hurricane since andrew back in 1992. this was just a monster. now cleaning up after the storm begins, it's going to be a tough go. >> i can't even imagine. i can't even imagine how they begin. some of these people, their personal belongings, too. jay gray, thank you very much. >> very tough there. 5:03. new this morning, san francisco's district attorney is seeking a restraining order. this is against a man protesting his decision to not charge officers in two of the city's

most controversial police shootings. "today in the bay's" pete is live from city hall. there's new video we have, right? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. san francisco district attorney is seeking a restraining order against one protester in particular. this is one video. i want to show you this first video indicating why. >> you push my friend. >> that's illegal! >> run me over. run me over. >> reporter: now, that twitter video posted on june 17th you have demonstrators at the home of gascone jumping in front of the car. the man he's seeking a restraining order against is victor manuel. unhappy with the decision not to charge officers with a police shooting. in the woods case, earlier this week, a judge ruled new video may cast doubts on statements by

the officers so we could see a lawsuit from the family of mario woods in the future. i want to show you another video. this was posted to instagram on september 2nd. demonstrators again at his home. it appears gascone and the protesters are throwing watermelon at each other. gascone reported incidents multiple times to police claiming emotional distress to him and his wife. he says the protesters has demonstrated eight times at his home. gascone is not seeking a third term in 2019. live in san francisco, "today in the bay." >> could be a scary situation. thank you so much, pete, for that update. 5:05. in just a few hours we're expecting another update on the closure of san francisco's salesforce transit center. work to shore up the transit center is taking longer than expected. the street was set to reopen tomorrow but transportation leaders now say that fremont between howard and mission streets will not reopen until

next wednesday. the road was closed after the cracked beam was found there at the new transbay transit center. another crack was found shortly after. new this morning, a warning to anyone who buys jewelry at ross, nordstram rack. they are loaded with metals that can cause cancer and reproductive harm. the research done was done on jewelry from stores right here in the bay area. workers at two financially strapped hospitals plan to picket. last week feherty filed a motion to auction off south bay hospitals. in no bidder is found, the county may jump in to save.

concerned nurses worried about their fate will rely today -- rally, i should say, outside today at each of those hospitals. continuing coverage now of a brewing fight between whole foods and a long-time contra costa restaurant. the walnut creek shopping center where jade restaurant is owned by a company called regency center. they say whole foods is leasing part of the area and the restaurant is being kicked out. the owner says she can't believe she's being forced to leave and has a message for whole foods and amazon. >> it's unfair. we are small. >> what harm are they doing by being a few doors down from whole foods? i don't get it. >> whole foods has yet to comment. the jade garden restaurant has been in that spot for more than 30 years. right now at 5:07 on your

thursday morning, we're seeing some clouds moving by san francisco but we do have no clouds and low fog. no low clouds and fog. as you make your way out the door, we'll see partly cloudy skies across the bay in oakland as you make your way to the b.a.r.t. station it will be in the mid-50s and then we're going to have another beautiful day as the skies clear. we're looking at temperatures in the upper 60s in oakland for the high today. we'll be up to 72 in palo alto and 76 in livermore today. antioch and concord reaching 76 degrees. in santa rosa, expect a high of 71. as we go into the temperatuafte temperatures will go way up. i'll have more on that in a few minutes. as we head over to mike, you're hearing about a new crash? >> and concern because it's reported at the bay bridge toll mr plaza behind me. i don't see any flashing lights or disturbance to the flow approaching the cash lanes. off to the right you see a few folks waiting and that's

mike traffic te right now at 5:12, we have mostly clear skies and another beautiful day on the way for the bay area. here's a live look outside in palo alto. we'll see temperatures go from the mid-50s to the upper 60s with some sunshine today. it's about to get hot. i'll show you the numbers for the weekend.

that's coming up in less than five minutes. 580 westbound, sparkling lights. this is your commute through the dublin interchange. no problem. good morning. happy thursday. i'm just going to point at these numbers and let them speak for themselves. the dow had the worst trading day since february yesterday. nasdaq, 315 to the negative. worst day since the british decided to leave the european union. tech sector got spapged. apple down 5%. why tech? it had been a high-flyer, that's part of it and worries about relationships with china. that's another part of it. but everybody who had money in the stock market. jeff bezos lost $9 million. . you lost money if you have a

retirement account, and i hope you have a retirement account. a lot of people know down to the dime how much money they lost. many americans have access to their retirement account through apps on their phones and tablets. that's a good thing. you should be involved in your own future. financial experts warn you should not take action based on one or two days of action. there's a lot of worry about rising interest rates. rates go up, bond becomes more attractive, money flows out of the stock market. the fed raises rates to keep inflation in check as the economy grows. that's totally normal. totally expected. but the president doesn't like it. >> i think the fed is making a mistake. it's so tight. i think the fed has gone crazy. >> we do expect the dow industrials to lose another 300 points on the open this morning as well. it's going to be a rough series.

i know you're getting ready for the day but overall it will be a good hair day when we talk about the humidity in the air. the frizz factor, not bad. a little extra hairspray this morning because it's humid. the rest of the day is looking great. and then our temperatures will be heading into the upper 70s for antioch and concord. we're up to 69 in oakland today. 72 in palo alto. san jose, expect a high of 73. we'll see a high of 74 in napa today. this is tropical storm sergio with wind speeds at 62 miles an hour. this will be moving into baja, california, and bringing rain and gusty winds into those areas by friday. a lot of us make travel plans in that area. heads up about that. tropical storm michael producing a lot of heavy rain.

it's centered over south carolina in those areas that were just really devastated by those hurricanes just a few weeks ago. we're still looking at this moving in, producing heavy rain and quickly moving out over the atlantic. at home we're looking at high temperatures warming up over the next new days. saturday, the warmest day, breezy winds. up to 87 degrees. it will be a hot weekend for the valleys while san francisco keeps it comfortable but still windy with highs near 70 on saturday. and no injuries, more importantly. rest of contra costa county, danville, alamo looking great. volume starts to increase a bit. a little slowing for 84 coming

month a jury ordered monsanto to bay an east bay school groundskeeper $289 million in damages. dwayne johnson says the company's weed killer roundup caused him to have terminal cancer. monsanto appealed and in the tentative ruling yesterday the judge found it was not proven monsanto acted maliciously or oppressively. that means that the $250 million in punitive damages will likely be thrown out. another $33 million in compensatory damages could be re-examined as well. the judge is still weighing the case and the decision is expected soon. 5:23. today is national coming out day. as many celebrate the emotional day, santa clara county is launching the first lbgtq interactive digital models in the nation. it will be located in the county government center in san jose. it will help train county employees will cultural

competency. facebook is unveiling a new feature in honor of the day. users will now be able to select came out and share their own story. while the addition may be new on facebook, lbgtq people have been coming out on the social media platform since it launched. how about a reason to not cook a few days. the city of elsarito is serving, 20 straubts are participating. that event is in its fourth year. new this morning, what could be better than retiring the bay area? "u.s. news & world report" raked the top 100 metro area how they meet retirement needs, including housing, health care and happiness. santa rosa ranked 44. san francisco, 51st on that list. san jose came in 92nd.

this is video of that rocket as it took off this morning in kazakhstan. the two-man crew headed to the international space station but a booster malfunction took place shortly after lift-off. that triggered an emergency space of the capsule and rocket. within the last hour they received new photos, this is from the russian space agency. it shows both crew members there. the russian cosmonaut and nasa engineer. the capsule landed in a remote area of kazakhstan and took rescue crews more than an hour to receive them. russia has suspended all space launches to figure out what went wrong. a developing story. police in the east bay need your help to find a person who shot and killed a teenage boy. new this morning, we know the boy's name. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us from a grocery store in antioch where the boy died. do you know how old he was? >> reporter: he was just 17

years old. you can see family and friends have left candles for him, empty bottles of beer, balloons, flowers. we believe the balloons, polo, the brand of clothing he liked to wear. his name was omar zaragoza, just 17 years old. someone shot and killed him tuesday afternoon around this lucky supermarket on west 18th in antioch. sadly he died right here in the parking lot. "the east bay times" reports the contra costa county sheriff's office identified the victim as zara zaragoza. police do not have any motive or made an arrest. if you know anything, law enforcement would like to hear from you. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much. 5:33. a key witness reportedly took the stand in a case of a san jose man accused of killing his parents in their evergreen home.

he's charged with shooting his mother and father in 2016. he's representing himself in this trial. the mercury news reports a one-time close friend testified yesterday. he talked about the defendant making a confession and creating a video to try to prove someone forced him into carrying out the killings. if convicted, he may face 25 years to life in prison. turning to a heat battle over where to open a mental health facility in the east bay. both sides say psychiatric care and rehab centers are needed but some don't want them in residential neighborhoods. the proposed site is in unincorporate walnut creek. it was an elderly care home. dr. gregory braverman says he wants to turn it into a place where adults can get counseling while recovering from emotional crisis and mental illness. some people are worried about security. >> all it takes is one individual to come in who's angry, upset, could potentially

do harm to someone working or living in the facility or living around the community. >> it's a voluntary program. the patient has signed consent. it's not a locked facility. >> a public meeting is scheduled on the issue this monday at 1:30 in martinez. 5:35 right now. work starts in a few hours. the developer of valco mall is wasting no time getting started. cupertino green lit massive housing and retail project there and it's demo day. kris sanchez is live from cupertino with how fast the rest of this project will go for us, chris. >> reporter: we don't know how fast the rest of the development will go at this point because there's still two options on the table and the city council has to pick which one will go forward. all this heavy equipment is here, ready for demo day.

they'll take down empty parts of the mall and mall parking structure. they can move forward with this part because of sb-35, which is a state law enacted last year to streamline the approval process for projects that include affordable housing. under either development plan, enough of the units will be affordable housing to trigger that streamlined approval. both the city's valco specific plan and sand hill property plans will mean 2500 units of housing, 2 million square feet of office space. where they differ is in the benefits to the school districts here and also the requirement for open space and traffic mitigation, among other points. the next planning commission is a week from today. meanwhile, the cupertino group, better cupertino, continues its year's long opposition to valco development and is pushing a referendum. you can find a link to that in my twitter feed and facebook page. that's where you can find the city's explanation of the plan.

out may be in a more permanent spot. the community was outraged when it was painted over in gray. today the alum rock school board will determine whether it's feasible to get the artist to paints it at the school or district building. the staff has been investigating this and the artist jose velasquez estimates it could cost $825,000 to repaint that mural. big cultural icons for certain parts of the community. this is an iconic shot -- not iconic but the one i show. 101 where the traffic builds a bit. i'm sorry the lighting, the headlights are coming towards our lens. we'll show you how things shape up. not headlights but looking at yellow and orange. that's for a little slowing here for 101 north of 680. look at the rest the bay. a great, easy drive. just that build out of the

altamont east 580. a smooth drive towards the bay bridge and north there. we have that richmond/san rafael just picking up a little volume. i'll check to see if anything's wrong. i think they're just shifting lanes. well, here it is thursday. we're so close to the weekend. what better way to celebrate than a look at the weekend weather. >> it's going to be a great weekend across the bay area but starting to warm up. you may make your weekend plans based on the weather. here's a look at our inland forecast where we look 88 degrees. 81 for the bay. the coast will be up to 69 degrees. so, some more comfortable weather there for our coastal areas and some very warm weather for the inland valleys. it's also going to be windy. i'll be watching out for high fire danger. as we get a look at our forecast and maybe you're going to half moon bay for the art and pumpkin festival on saturday, the parade starts at noon. we'll have festivities going on all day long.

our high temperatures there reach into the mid-60s. if you head over towards oakland, you'll be able to get a shift tour of the pirates of caribbean ships in oakland on saturday from 10:00 to 1:00. we'll have cool weather to start and then some low 70s for the afternoon. if you're going to sqauw valley, expect those temperatures on friday to reach up to 58 degrees. we'll be up to 61 on saturday. cooler on sunday, 63. russian river valley will be warm but very nice with sunshine. reaching 78 on saturday and sunday 80 degrees. if you're thinking of making it a beach weekend, it will be a good one. the warmest day will be on friday, reaching 77 degrees. then slightly cooler for the rest of the weekend. as we do keep that sunshine. now, if you're planning to head out and around the bay area or beyond, let me know where you're going. i'm @kerihall weather. we'll talk about what's going on today coming up in about three minutes.

west's wife, kim kardashian, met with the president earlier this year and convinced him to commute a woman's jail sentence. west was on "saturday night live" wearing a make america great again hat. the president is speaking out about the disappearance of a washington post writer. >> trump's words have been severe. >> it's a big change in language. a couple days ago the president said he did not know much about the disappearance of saudi arabia journalist, an american resident, who disappeared during a visit to the saudi consulate in turkey. this is surveillance video from the turks of the reporter entering. you see the saudi consulate. there's no video of him exiting. turkish intelligence has claimed not only was he murdered, his body was cut into pieces. here's the president. >> frankly, the fact it's a reporter, you could say in many respects it brings it to a

we're heading up into the low 70s today. these numbers still cooler than normal as we reach up to 72 in milpit milpitas. 72 in hayward. danville reaching 78 degrees. we'll see some low 70s for redwood city today and for the outer sun set, 64. for the north bay, expect those highs up to 71 degrees in santa rosa. as you're getting dressed this morning, we talked about the jacket or long sleeves. you may need a light sweater for the start of the day. then short sleeves and pants will keep you comfortable the rest of the day. here's an update on hurricane -- what was hurricane sergio, now a tropical storm and it's continuing to move closer to baja, california, over the next couple of days. we've, of course, had a lot of those headlines and stories about tropical storm michael as it continues to race off towards the north and east. but really impressive that this is still a tropical storm even though it's very far inland moving over towards south carolina right now. then we'll see lots of rain and

the potential of some tornadoes in that region as we go throughout the day. as we bring it back home, our inland temperatures are getting ready to heat up. it's going to be in the upper 80s on saturday, some breezy winds. we'll be watching out also for high fire danger in our hills. mike, you're sorting out a couple of delays. >> we have a couple of unexpected delays. like i said, explain what's going on here. now, the south bay, i should show you the peninsula, you'd expect a lot of green. that's what we see. a little slowing for 101 in san jose. the altamont pass, that will be slow off 205. eastbound continues a slower drive. there's work going on there. i think it's paving work but there's roadwork blocking at least a couple lanes that may continue throughout the morning. they typically pick that up around 6:15, 6:30. they may have that there until

navigation app waze expanded the console service throughout the country. it started in 2016 in only a few cities. riders will pay a fee, about $8 to pay for the driver's gas. waze says they hope this will ease traffic jams and help drivers save on their daily commute. colin kaepernick will be honored for contributions to black history and culture. the former 49ers' quarterback protest of police brutality touched off -- really touched off a national conversation there. and because of his activism, nike chose kaepernick to be the face of the company's new ad campaign but a lot of people are upset. this image, allegedly out of arkansas, is going viral. take a look at your screen. you can see people wearing nike shirts in their booking photos.
