welcome to friday morning. let's take a live look outside. this time of the san mateo bridge. folks getting a jump on their weekend perhaps? we're going to try to. >> i know somebody did. >> somebody did. marcus is off but we're delighted scott mcgrew is in. i'm laura. mike, kari, you have a look at the forecast. >> it will be warmer for the afternoon. live look outside in san jose with our temperatures in the low 50s starting out this morning. all clear skies and as we head toward noon we'll be at 73 degrees, and heading over to martinez, for our temperature trend, check that out. it will be in the low 80s today and we're coming out of those 70s that we've had for the past couple of days, so i'll talk about a hotter weekend ahead and in just a few minutes, mike,
4:31 am
you're talking about the peninsula. >> shhh, we're 101 southbound there's a little slowing, lane restrictions overnight, road crews. we know about that but it's not a full closure. will you see more slowing over the next half hour as they start to pick those crews up from 101 as you head south toward the dumbarton area or toward marsh i should say. over here a smooth drive through contra costa county. i'll get out of your way. eastbound we have a crash around loveridge, looks like everything is sticking out into the slow lane so that will be a distraction and getting across no distraction, wow! this is a live picture, you could tell by the lights, guys, back to you. breaking news this morning, a shakeup in the u.s. catholic church with the resignation of an embattled cardinal. the vatican announced pope francis accepted the resignation of d.c. area archbishop daniel wuerl or donald wuerl, rather.
4:32 am
wuerl has been the focus of the church sex abuse scandal centered in accused of covering abuse by priests. bay area catholic church leaders grappling with similar issues, within the next few weeks, bishop patrick mcgraw plans to release the names of every priest tied to credible sex assault allegations in the san jose diocese. more recently, the oakland archdiocese agreed to do the same thing. former fbi leaders are helping the church investigate. this morning, the death toll from hurricane michael is climbing to at least six. the powerful storm is gone, but it certainly left the path of destruction across the southeast. the two largest hospitals in panama city are transferring mad landfall. hundreds of patients because of structural damage. >> the state health officials are actively working to evaluate those hospitals, provide critical care to patients. >> the houses in mexico beach are gone. they were ripped apart by 1

"today in the bay's" sergio quintana has more details. >> reporter: the big, blank space on the california voter's guide is odd for the voters we talked with. what do you see when you look at gavin newsom? >> when ineom, cstatement." >> reporter: what do you think? >> i don't know what to think. i've never seen that before. >> reporter: there's a reason why newsom isn't in there. >> gavin newsom did not accept the voluntary state spending limits for his campaign and therefore he was not eligible to purchase a candidate statement in the voter information guide.
4:34 am
>> reporter: the spending limit in the governor's race is $14.5 million. according to a spokesman for newsom's campaign, they decided not to stay under that voluntary cap in both the primary and the upcoming general election. since september, newsom's campaign has spent more than $21 million. his republican opponent agreed to the cap and has so far spent less than 9 million. in a prepared statement, john cox told us in part "by choosing his special interest money and not accepting contribution limits, he's chosen his donors over everyday californians." does it matter to voters that newsom bypassed the voluntary spending limit? is it a big deal, no, we're going to blow past $14.5 million. >> i don't think so, no. these guys spend a lot of money, all of them do. >> i think it's a little arrogant, but i'm probably going to vote for him. >> reporter: sergio quintana, "today in the bay." >> according to the california secretary of state's office, it's certainly not unheard of for candidates to exceed the
4:35 am
voluntary spending limit. gubernatorial candidates in the last two election cycles decided not to cap their spending. there's a new break in a san jose case detectives hope will lead to a suspect, frankie santos jr. was stabbed to death in front of his own home last month. sheriffs deputies are looking for the suspect's truck. it was just identified as a 2004 or 2005 nissan titan. this past saturday family and friends were passing out updated flyers near baskham and san carlos when two men in a truck started threatening them. the passenger fired a gunshot. san jose police arrested the juveniles the next day. they're not believed to be the killers. the widow says she's moved out of her home her husband was killed in front of. >> life-changing. with no longer can stay in our home that has all of our memories and whatever they have left of my husband and their father and it's just like, i've

lost everything, youeverything. >> the santos family is trying to raise a reward fund for information to $10,000. it's 4:36, weekend almost here. many of us hit garage or yard sales looking for a bargain and tomorrow in contra costa county, saturday, one of two yearly city-wide garage sales in el cerrito. some sales benefit charities like community centers and senior centers and wildfire survivors. now it's too late to join as an official seller, but buyers are certainly welcome. live look at the shark tank, which may need a renaming about now. how about the flasplash pad? >> the splashover the s.a.p. ce warriors preseason game and there will be some royalty on hand as well, as in king james, lebron james and the l.a. lakers. that's weird to say, take on the warriors. the two teams mixed it up two nights ago in las vegas. of course, neither game counts in the standingings. the two teams don't really meet

4:41 am
historically, a return to more 5% isn't that high, normal rates won't feel that normal for buyers used to getting a mortgage at 4% or lower. some economists suggest that sellers may have to cut their prices but borrows can't afford a more expensive home in a higher rate world. chick-fil-a are testing out a new format for some stores. two locations opening in nashville and louisville. they won't ehave dining rooms or drive-throughs. there will be a walkup window for carry-out orders but neither store takes cash, just debit, credit and app payments. different way to get your chicken. >> i know somebody who door dashed it last night, i'm just saying, and it wasn't me, no. >> always closed on sunday. frank, have a good day and hope you have a good day on wall street as well. >> i hop-important friday forecast and the weekend, too. >> you want to be prepared for the warmer temperatures we'll see today. live look outside in palo alto, starting out with with low 50s at 8:00, headed into the low 70s by 2:00 today.
