"today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning to you and thanks so much for joining us on this friday. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington got his birthday weekend started early, and kari is in here to tell us about the weather. >> it's going to be a great weekend. but very warm. we're going back to summer this weekend and we're looking at temperatures that will start out cool and really heat up. here is a live look outside in san jose, and checking out our temperature trend for sunnyvale, we'll be at 59 degrees at 9:00 this morning and some low 80s. we're going to be abovedegrs, a way out the door, heading for right around saratoga, it will be a very cool morning, but whatever you have to do, get it done early. we'll talk about our weekend

forecast in a few minutes, and mike, you have a later start now in oakland. >> getting this bay bridge done early would have helped if you went through the bay bridge already, you would have seen a very light flow of traffic, just about 5:50. they turned on the metering lights, as we saw from the last shot we saw, the fast track lanes filling in, and now finally at 6:01, we're seeing those cash lanes start to build on the approach out of oakland. so this is a later build, and a lighter one. much lighter, part of the traffic held up over here coming into richmond, the earlier crash activity over at san pablo avenue and still a disstrx and sti -- distraction and around. slow drive. there's another disabled vehicle around golden gate field. we'll let you know if that's a complication, all the folks coming through the area, though. cocoa county just some great, slowing out of concord pay point. 242 the walnut creek interchange just fine in toward danville alamo'r peninsula show a great driv

>> sunnyvale police arrested people that could have started a skimming operation at a gas pump. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live where this all started. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott and laura. the crime scene tape is still up. if you come with me, you can see the casings are still open on some of the pumps, where officers removed what appeared to be credit card skimmers from at least several of these six pumps here in sunnyvale. this is the world station on west mod between sunnyvale and matilda avenues. we were also custody. you how many customers may have we're not we nnot tell been impacted here but if you get gas here at the world gas station, you're going to want to check your credit card statements. credit card industry analyst says thieves may be targeting all of us at gas stations because gas stations aren't required to install more secure

rip headers really the year 2020. you can protect yourself by paying with a credit card instead of a debit card, and if something seems off, just go inside and pay. don't use the scanner here at the pump. look for any tampering, any broken seal, loose fit, any kind of type that doesn't match, and as the skimmers are meant to just fit over that original credit card terminal, they might be loose. if you see a loose one, go inside. monitor your credit and bank statements because the sooner you catch any fraud, the betert. we are asking sunnyvale department of public safety what the time span was people might have been affected, how long these might have been up, how many people might have been affected. when we get those details, we'll make sur in sunnyvale, kris sanchez, ay hea a similar warning in the north bay. sonoma county deputies say skimmers were found at two stations.fs tgeted a valero and a beacon gas station. investigators say the skimmers had been in place and working for at least the past week so as

reconsidering their saudi ties. it comes as a delegation from saudi arabia arrived in turkey overnight as part of an investigation into a missing saudi journalist who lived in america. jamal kashagi wrote for "the washington post." the paper reports the turkish government has audio and video confirming kashagi was murdered and then dismembered inside the saudi consulate in turkey. the saudis deny any involvement. many companies in the bay area have taken millions of dollars in saudi cash, among them uber, tesla and lyft. uber's ceo says he was going to withdraw from an upcoming conference at the saudi capital because of this scandal. you may recall, back in june, saudi crowned prince mohammad bin salman met with facebook's mark zuckerberg. zuckerberg has yet to comment. friend of a millbrae father kidnapped and murdered are concerned about the upcoming bail hearing for one defendant. in may of 2016, keith green's body was found in sonoma county. soon after, authorities arrested

tiffany lee from hillsborough, along with two men. lee is the mother of the victim's children. investigators believe there was some kind of custody dispute. bail hearing is scheduled for next week, and the judge is supposed to consider a motion to reduce bail for this man, kaveh bayat. the victim's friends have launched an online position to stop that. the other two defendants are out on bail. it's been a little over nine years and still no clues in the case of a missing 5-year-old boy. one woman trying to keep him alive. keep his name alive. hassani campbell, his foster father, louis ross says he disappeared from a shoe shop on college avenue in oakland back in 2009. police did an extensive search for the 5-year-old, who had cerebral palsy and leg braces. his foster parents were arrested originally on suspicion of murder, but never charged with the crime. sherri lynn miller spent the last nine years hoping people will not forget about hassani. >> somebody has to care.

he was an innocent, little boy that didn't deserve what happened to him. >> the national center for missing and exploited children put together an age progression of hassani, what he may look like now, this would be about the age of 12. right now he would have been 14. >> it is 6:07 right now. this weekend in san francisco you can help commemorate an historic event. the 50th anniversary of the presidio 27 mutiny. they staged a peaceful protest of the vietnam war on october 14th, 1968. 50 years. the prisoners were put in the presidio stockade for going awol, their group protest ended with them reading a list of demands. the prisoners were tried for mutiny, and a majority of them spent several years in federal prison. historians say it was a defining moment when it came to the opposition of the vietnam war. >> it's important because it was

day where those temperatures go up very fast, 74 degrees at 1:00 today. and getting the kids up and out the door for school on this friday in dublin, look at how cool it will be headed to school. only at 49 degrees. after that cool start, it will be a warmer day, so you have to make sure they're dressed for the cool morning, and a very warm afternoon, as our high temperatures in the tri valley head up to 85 degrees. it will be 83 in san jose, and 77 today in oakland. we'll get a look at what's going on for palo alto coming up, and mike, you're showing the jam through oakland. >> that's correct, getting into richmond out of the san pablo area from hilltop, where you're really starting to lean on the brakes, but then into richmond, we have a lot more traffic flowing as you have approached the merge in golden gate field and things get back to the limit. the earlier crash at about san pablo avenue have been cleared from the chp report, i think there may still be a vehicle or two on the shoulder, completely out of the lanes because it looks like folks are still

bad but remember, this is friday. it's slow through richmond, recovering from an earlier crash and approaching the bay bridge and the backup. north bay typical slowing for highway 37, guys, back over to you. here at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business headlines. wall street is expected to open up higher this morning, as the markets attempt to bounce back from the massive sell-off we've seen over the past two days. there were green arrows across asian markets overnight. europe is positive in early trading. back here in the u.s., the dow closing down more than 540 points yesterday. it has lost nearly 1,400 points in the past two sessions. a big drop. the dow and the nasdaq and the s&p 500 are all off to their worst start to october since 2008. so as an investor, what should you do today? first it depends on your quite time to panic. on cnbc last night, jim kramer said today could actually be a buying opportunity. other experts say this week's sell-off could be a positive for

investors who are in the market for the long haul. mortgage rates are at their highest levels in more than seven years at nearly 5%. it's a mark that analysts say could scare off many home buyers and could be a setback for the housing market, while 5% isn't that high, historically, a return to more normal rates won't feel that normal for buyers who are accustomed to getting a mortgage at 4% or lower. economists suggest sellers may have to cut their prices if borrowers can't afford a more expensive home in a higher rate world. a little fast food news that might make you hungry this morning. chick-fil-a is testing a new format for some of its stores, two locations opening up in nashville and louisville won't have dining rooms for drive-thrus. they will focus on delivery and catering. there will be a walk-up window for carryout orders. they won't take cash, they'll use debit, credit and app payments. getting rid of the seats but i doubt they'll get rid of the lines, guys. back over to you. >> pretty popular. although not with phones so. >> have a good weekend. happening today, women of impact from around the bay area will come together.

that's adorable! that's cute. >> 50 states! >> there you go, exactly. maybe you're staying right here in the bay area this weekend. >> we've got some great weather but all you have to do is take a little drive to change the weather around the bay area. we're going to have our microclimate in full effect. warm innd cool for the coast. here is a look at san jose, as you get started, and we're heading toward campbell with our temperatures in the low 60s at 10:00. normally we're reaching 76 degrees this time of year but we're headed into the low 80s this afternoon, and you're going to feel the difference compared to yesterday. so as you're getting up and getting ready for the day, it's going to start out very humid, so it's going to be still a good hair day but maybe a little extra hair spray or a little bit extra oil to help keep the frizziness down before that humidity goes down later on today. we're looking at highs reaching into the mid 80s today for parts of the south bay. cupertino though at 80 degrees for the high temperature and some breezy westerly and

northwesterly winds for the east bay, with highs there reaching into the upper 80s 83 in palo alto, and in daly city 70 degrees. we'll also be up to 70 on the embarcadero today and the north bay, reaching 87 in ukiah. so a much warmer day compared to yesterday, but you'll find some cooler temperatures along the coast, and for tomorrow, the art and pumpkin festival happening. they had those gigantic pumpkins and the one that weighs over raid starts at noon, and le to then if you're making plans to head over toward oakland, the pirates of the caribbean ship tours happening tomorrow between 10:00 and 1:00 and some great weather for that. let me know what you have going on this weekend @icalical twkarr on facebook and twitter. our inland temperatures are hot, breezy and dry for the weekend and looking at slightly cooler air for the middle of next week. mike, you have an important note for train riders. >> i was anticipating about a 30

to 60-minute delay. it's actually 90 minutes. let me explain what's going on. train number one for ace rail i should say, train number one got held up in tracy because of mechanical problems. train number three the next scheduled train came up, they come by and coupled up together and now they've combined forces to head in toward san jose, but on train number three schedule that is 90 minutes behind train one. there will be delays for folks mentioned t train but it is for the temporary transit center. we've known about that for weeks and we will not beupdate. they updated us a few days ago. b.a.r.t. no it's eastbound 580 that has slowing, the paving work cleared up now and westbound your commute no problems, a crash on the shoulder at grant line. look how light the traffic is this friday, lighter volume all around the bay. we had some slowing south headed toward mission, that late pickup of the earlier construction looks like it's cleared up and

chrissy field any time soon you'll notice a new art installation meant to bring public awareness to ocean pollution. an 82-foot-long sculpture of a blue whale made entirely of discarded single use plastic. it will be unveiled this morning by the monterey bay aquarium which posted this photo during construction. the sculpture will be on display next january. a new v from the pump base,g it to go up in flames as it was still attached to the gas pump. the vapors ignite from the gasoline, quite dangerous. luckily no one was hurt in that fire. ahead on "today in the bay," breaking overnight embattled cardinal resigns. the new fallout in the catholic church's worldwide abuse scandal. and heading to health, the bay area's first responders poised to visit the hurricane disaster zone at any moment. plus --

it's a lighter commute for most areas. >> there is the south bay, very, very mild, 101 around 0, mor traffic across the san mateo bridge. recovery here westbound 80 had gsarlier crash took a while to clear. all the folks smoothing out down the east shore freeway by west 80 around central. there may be another crash on the shoulder. we're tracking that. it's possible there's one vehicle still in the lanes. lots of vehicles in these lanes. the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza turned on about 6:00 this morning but look at that, we see the fast track visibly moving, that's good news at the toll plaza at least. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. it is 6:31 right now. breaking news this morning, a shakeup in the u.s. catholic church with the resignation of an embattled cardinal. within the past 90 minutes, the vatican announced pope

francis accepted the resignation of d.c. area archbishop daniel wuerl or donald wuerl, rather. wuerl has been the focus of the church sex abuse scandal centered in pennsylvania. he's accused of covering up abuse by priests. bay area catholic ch bishop patrick mcgraw plans to release the names of every priest tied to credible sex assault allegations in the san jose diocese. more recently, the oakland archdiocese agreed to do the same thing. former fbi leaders are helping the church investigate. >> it's 6:32. new this morning, a development in a story we've been following in contra costa county. chinese restaurant in walnut creek being forced out of the location it's occupied for 30 years. >> a new tenant says it no longer wants to occupy that space. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live in walt at does this mee garden, bob? >> reporter: well, scott, barring any surprises, quite possibly nothing.

jade garden restaurant is still slated to be kicked out of the encina grande shoinxt year. this is a popular eatery that has been in this location since supposed to take over this location and the u.p.s. store next door note fighted walnut creek planning commission it was not going to take the lease. aaa's decision coincides with the announcement jade garden would be leaving the center which upset a number of customers. it's not clear what influence that had on aaa's decision. the background this this, the whole foods supermarket is a couple of doors down.ncy centere expires, again, which is next year. the husband and wife who own and run jade garden blame the supermarket chain for them being forced out. whole foods did not reply to multiple requests for comment

g ay they, not whole foods made a decision and cite that they want to reduce congestion at the shopping center. >> don't hurt the small business. it's unfair. we are small. >> these people deserve to stay here, and deserve to be in business. >> reporter: assuming nothing changes the jade garden chinese restaurant in the encina shopping center in this location will be moving once its lease expires february 28th of next year. reporting live in walnut creek, bob redell, "today in the bay."t least 11. crews from the bay area are headed to the florida panhandle to try to help with the recovery efforts right now. an air force plane just took off from travis air force base. we caught the crews loading up supplies and boarding that plane.

it is the second aircraft that will take off this morning as part of the mission. the powerful storm itself, thir new york, boston area. it's kind of moving out. it's gone now, but it certainly left a path of destruction across the panhandle. the hardest was hit in florida, where the category 4 storm made landfall. two largest hospitals in pan has city are transferring hundreds of patients because of structural damage. >> state health officials are actively working to evaluate those hospitals to provide critical care to patients. >> a lot of homes in mexico beach are now gone, that's in florida. they were ripped apart by 155-mile-an-hour winds as the storm exploded across the coastline. power crews are repairing downed lines and blown transformers while survivors are clearing away debris. >> it's 6:35. follow-up, one family may find a small sense of closure from a

traffic drunk driving accident they suffered through three years ago. you might recall the story, esperanza rodriguez and her 14-month-old daughter died after a drunk driver plowed into them and crashed into a backyard brian jones had just left the livermore wine and arts festival when he lost control of his car. last year he was found guilty of second-degree murder. today he's scheduled to be sentenced. a new break in a san jose case detectives hope will lead to a suspect. frankie santos jr. was stabbed to death in front of his own home last month. sheriffs deputies are looking for the suspect's truck. it was just identified as a 2004 or 2005 nissan titan. this past saturday, family and friends were passing out updated flyers near baskham and san cash close to tell people about the crime, when two men in a truck started threatening them. friends tried to track down the truck to get a license plate number. the passenger fired a gunshot. san jose police arrested two

juveniles the next day. they're not believed to be the killers. the widow says she's moved out of her home her husband was killed in front of. it's just too painful. >> life-changing. we no longer can stay in our home that has all of our memories and whatever we have left of my husband and their father and it's just like, i've lost everything, you know? i've lost everything. >> the santos family is trying to raise a reward fund for information to $10,000. san mateo county emergency services can now be reached via text to 911. they've come up with a dramatic way to get that word out. ♪ >> scary. it's a new psa depicting a young girl hiding from an intruder and texting 911. effective immediately dispatch centers from law enforcement and fire agencies can receive those texts. so important message to hear, kind of a frightening way to hear it. >> it is, gets your attention.

also the note you saw in that text, what is your location? they can't just geo locate you instantaneo instantaneously. you still have to have the information guys. ace train, 100 minutes, over an hour and a half delay for train number one. train number three was supposed to hook up with that train. the two trains will couple together and take over, because train number one had some difficulties. they're both now stuck in tracy. not sure why. no update from ace rail but train number three is also delayed because of that additional wait time at the tracy station. you might want to think about that. we also hear the second line there vallejo ferry may be delayed because of some mechanical difficulties. just a note for ferry rider this is morning. an easy drive as you take a look, good recovery up the upper east shore freeway. the bay bridge has metering lights on, not a big problem because it's friday out there. >> pretty good looking friday. >> it's friday everywhere. we're looking forward to it, too. weather wise it will be warm. >> it will be a hot weekend for

the inland valleys and we're talking about some upper 80s once again. now this will be very much like last weekend, so if you were poolside or near the beach, that's where you want to be this weekend, too. we're looking at the bay with temperatures reaching 81 degrees. 69 for the coast, and on sunday, expect more of the same with some gusty winds, hot going to feel like summer all weekend long. but we're doing some fall activities, like picking pumpkins in the park in san jose, that's happening in discovery meadow. it will be 64. you want to get out there early, whether doing this or going to the pumpkin patches and high temperatures reach into the low 80s with a lot of sunshine. here is another cool event, this one going on in pleasanton, the ignite 2.0 art innovation, and this will start out at 5:00 in the afternoon. really nice with some upper 70s and cooling down quickly, as the winds start to pick up. it's going to be a cool evening there. on sunday we've got the jdrf one

with some upper 40s for the morning, but then some 80s for the afternoon. as you're getting dressed, you have to be ready for it all, especially if you'll be driving around the bay area, maybe a jacket to start and short sleeves and if it's a casual day, maybe wear some sandals when the temperatures heat up and how warm in concordtoy, reaching 88 degrees. we'll be at 83 in napa and 77 today in oakland. san francisco reaching 69 degrees. we've had all the updates on what was tropical storm michael, now post tropical, as it moves away from parts of cape cod, and moving out into the atlantic. then we hea over toward pacific, with tropical storm sergio making landfall in baja, california. still wind speeds thi is starti pick up and forward speed as well as it spreads some rain across parts of mexico, and also in arizona and new mexico over the next couple of days. so that's also going to be the

main headline for parts of the southwest. now, we are going to be focusing on some hot and dry weather. hopefully no wildfires, but we have to be really careful out there this weekend as the winds pick up and humidity drops. in for san francisco it will be nice, comfortable and highs in the low 70s. mike, you spotted that crash on the bay bridge. >> it was reported at the toll plaza, kari, but we saw the flashing lights just past the toll plaza, actually in the last three minutes, look at that, they have cleared up. these are approaching the expansion here metering thhat ce shoulder, no longer even a backup. no longer even a distraction. we still see that you have to wait. these folks that are moving more smoothly, hov, carpool, folks, think about it. the backup at the bay bridge is lighter because it's friday but slow down the east shore freeway and slow from san pablo down to the scene, 25 minutes holding steady under half an hour for the drive for westbound 80. look at southbound 680, south 242, the build through concord,

pleasant hill, walnut creek, all folks feeding off of highway 4, this is the route kirker pass and rest of the routes through contra costa county just starting to see that build, a little bit later and lighter for friday and around the bay, the south bay shows a smooth drive as well. told you we had that train update. the train ace trains one, three and seven, the first three that come through, in out of the tri valley just getting started. that problem with train one, they got one and three coupled together. they are moving but it took about a half hour longer than they thought. all the three trains arriving to san jose about the same time. guys, back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. take a look at this. breaking news out of orlando, florida. school bus crashes into a pool. these pictures just coming into our newsroom. there were nine kids on board that stochool bus when it swerv off the road after hitting a jeep, went into a fence into a backyard and skrascrashed into

plans have been dropped to bring in a new tenant to the space where the jade garden restaurant operates. for the time being jade garden will be allowed to remain there but the restaurant expects to lose its lease at the start of the new year. new this morning, some of silicon valley's biggest tech executives are reconsidering their saudi ties. it comes as a delegation from saudi arabia arrived in turkey overnight as part of an investigation into a missing journalist jamal kashgi wrote for "the washington post" and was an inlegal resident of the united states. the paper reports the turkish government has audio and video confirming kashagi was murdered and then dismembered inside the saudi consulate in turkey. the saudis deny any involvement. many companies in the bay area have taken millions of dollars in saudi cash, among them uber, tesla and lyft. uber's ceo says he was going to withdraw from an upcoming conference at the saudi capital because of this scandal. you may recall, back in june,

saudi crowned prince mohammad bin salman met with facebook's mark zuckerberg. zuckerberg has yet to comment. this commemorate an historic event. >> the presidio trust will be honoring the 50th anniversary of the presidio 27 mutiny. 27 military prisoners staged a protest of the vietnam car in 1968. the prisoners were put in the stockade for going awol. their group protest ended with them reading a list of demands. the prisoners were tried for mutiny, and a majority of them spent several years in federal prison. historians say it was a defining moment when it came to the opposition to the vietnam war. >> it's important because it was the beginning of momentum of moving gi protest from individual to collective action. >> now, you can see several living members talk during a fi0
