now to a new challenge for president trump. the apparent murder of a washington post journalist inside the saudi arabia consulate in turkey. will the president confront the saudis who have been good to him through the years? we have foreign correspondent richard engel in istanbul with more. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it seems president trump is confronting saudi arabia, but only pressuring them to give an answer. to give more of an explanation. once they give an explanation, we will see if president trump decides to accept it and move on. as more information comes out, it seems that saudi arabia will have a very difficult job explaining what happened in the consulate behind me. nbc news learned that the turks say they have recordings that they believe prove that jamal khashoggi, the journalist, went into the consulate and was murdered inside, tortured and
5:16 am
interrogated and body dismembered. there is a new twist about how the recordings may have been obtained. in the last several hours, overnight, it is now morning here, the turkish newspaper came out and said that it was khashoggi himself who was wearing an apple watch that was synced to a phone to his fiancee outside and made the recordings. he knew something bad could happen to him. he set up the trap, teeffective, to make sure he had some way of recording what was going on there and he may have left behind the clues that turkish officials needed to solve his murder. that's the one story that came out overnight in the turkish newspaper. if it is true, it is an amazing story of human ian survival.
5:17 am
it is an issue going into a dangerous situation. it could be a spin on a story. we reported in the past that the turks had bugged the consulate and perhaps it is that the turks had their own methods of making recordings in the consulate. now they invented the other story to create an alternative narrative as to how those recordings were made in a foreign diplomatic building on their soil. >> good. thank you, richard. let's go to dylan with the check of the weather. >> we saw pretty wild weather in southern california. look at this video of the lightning strike spotted over southern california with the storm system yesterday. it knocked out power to about 10,000 people. wow. incredible to actually capture that lightning. it is always so hard to do as it filled up the night sky. storms are still occurring, but
