5:00 am
marcus has the day off. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's check in with kari right now. these winds are a big concern. >> it's been a big concern and we're gradually going to see our winds decreasing as we go throughout the day. in other parts of the bay area, we haven't had high wind gusts. calm conditions in palo alto and our temperature trend from the mid-50s to the mid-70s. it will be a very warm day, and the main concern has been over the north bay and also the east bay hills, as our temperatures today head into the low to mid 80s, once again, very warm weather and also some gusty winds. we're still looking at some of the wind gusts and sustained winds over 20 miles per hour, with gusts possibly topping 50 to 60 miles per hour, especially once you get in the north bay a wind gust in mt. st. helena 72 miles per hour. that may be a concern driving around the bay area. mike, as we head over to you, you're tracking a crash in
5:01 am
dublin. >> i am, karen, it is presenting an unusual spot for the slowing. i do have the camera here on the dublin interchange, and the dublin grade. we're looking at west 580 and that is fine. west 580 your commute looks like it's fine headed to the dublin interchange, but approaching there from pleasanton it's northbound 680 a crash took out the attenuator barrels, the yellow barrels at the off-ramp to attenuate your speed. slow you down so you don't crash into the barrier with such an impact and those have been hit and right now got stuff spilled all over near the burnow off-ramp. i'll let you know as chp arrives if they have to close lanes or affect the off-ramp. meanwhile the rest of the bay, south bay up into san francisco moves smoothly. for the north bay issues we'll send it back to you guys. >> that's right. it's extreme fire danger calling for extreme measures this morning. >> we just checked with pg&e. 17,000 customers in the north bay are without power right now, most of them in lake county.
5:02 am
60,000 across the state, and this is not by accident. pg&e is shutting off the electricity for safety reasons. >> we'll go live to the north bay in our next half hour, but first let's go to the east bay, where there are also fire concerns. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in danville. what are you seeing there, kris? >> reporter: well, it's always tri tricky to shoot wind when it's dark but we found flags at the veterans memorial building here in danville. you can see they're whipping pretty good. the biggest concern though is the wind whipping through the diablo range and the hills there. cal fire says this is the time it is critical to be aware. they say 95% of wildfires are started by people and most of the time it is inadvertent. cal fire reminds us that you should not mow anything today because of its winds and the high fire danger. if you have car trouble, make sure you don't pull over in dry grass. if you're hauling something,
5:03 am
check that trailer chain, that it's not dragging and creating sparks, and if you smoke, make sure you put those cigarette butts out completely but never out the window, and though today is not a good day to create a defensible space, you want to do that as soon as you possibly can. i'll be posting wildfire prevention tips all morning long. also any wildfire danger and as the winds start to cook up, we'll be telling you more about that as well. in danville, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you, kris. >> you normally can't see the winds but we can see it blowing out there. kari joins us again. the same windy conditions that we saw about a year ago this time of the year, the deadly north bay wildfires were sparked and such a concern. >> such a concern, and we do still have those same conditions, and we always talk about a red flag warning, but basically that means we have critically low humidity and strong wind gusts, and some very warm weather, and any small sparks could definitely spread fairly quickly as we go throughout the morning, and then
5:04 am
look at how low the humidity is. now, normally during the early morning hours, we have our highest amount of humidity, but it drops down to about 5%, so very low humidity in parts of the north bay, but then it starts to come up especially for areas around the east bay, but we still will have some low humidity during the overnight hours. here are some tips if you see any suspicious activity, you should report that. once again, no outdoor burning and high-profile vehicles will be impacted, and then if you see any downed trees, that will be possible, and make sure that they're not over any power lines and make sure you do report that immediately. our wind gusts once again still could reach 50 to 60 miles per hour in some of the hills. so we'll be tracking all of this, that's right here. we'll have any updates and also on nbcbayarea.com. >> thank you very much. we're keeping tabs on this red flag warning. as the weather alerts change throughout the day, use our free

punishment if it turns out the saudis killed khashoggi as many now suspect. it is 5:05 right now. authorities are investigating a deadly quadruple shooting outside a late night halloween party. it happened early in the morning on pulgas avenue in east palo alto north of bay road. officers arrived to find four victims. two died at the scene. two others suffered critical injuries. the gunman got away. authorities say one of the people who died is a 22-year-old stockton man. investigators believe it may have started with a dispute during the party. 5:06. happening today, attorneys for the former leaders of the infamous silicon valley company thernos will appear in san jose. elizabeth holmes and one other company officer face criminal charges accused of defrauding them. the palo alto blood testing company shut down over the summer. federal prosecutors have charged the defendants with defrauding investors, doctors and patients. so this is a major issue across the bay area. people forced to live on the

5:08 am
sydney at the 16-day visit to australia, fiji, tonga and new zeala zealand. >> i loved the way awe announced it, laura. at 5:08, we are starting out with cool temperatures around the bay area, and as we head down to cupertino, we will see our numbers right at about 57 degrees at 9:00, and still a light breeze going on. now as our temperatures heat up today, we'll have mostly sunny skies and overall a very summer-like feel with our high in san jose reaching 83 degrees. 85 in antioch, and 84 in napa. ukiah today still that high fire danger with our high reaching 83 there, and santa rosa reaching 85 degrees. as we go throughout the day, the winds will start to calm down, which will be good news in terms of that very high fire danger for the inland hills, and then we'll see some improved weather the rest of the week. so i'll talk more about that and
5:09 am
mike, you're checking on what's happening in the tri valley. >> we had that crash for northbound 680 and we saw the slow sensors. as i back up, we can't see many slow sensors. the ones we saw for northbound 680 just passing burnow as well. that's where the crash is located, they're talking about the barrels at the off-ramp, they're affected. one has been smashed up. no major injuries and no lanes blocked from what i understand. chp is on scene. we'll track that but the slowing we saw headed up toward the dublin interchange cleared up over the last few minutes and the dublin interchange remains clear, good for the morning commute. smooth drive north of there through san ramon, alamo watching the wind through the east bay hills, kris sanchez just reported through cocoa county. smooth drive. another crash 580 westbound just past the warren freeway cutoff there. no lanes blocked but that's the second of the morning for that portion of oakland. on the peninsula an easy, light drive through palo alto, northbound 101 passing

good monday morning. right now at 5:13, we will have a very chilly start to the morning, and a very warm afternoon, spanning ac ross the bay area. as we get a live look in fremont, mostly calm and light wind as we go throughout the morning though we'll see the winds calming down and temperatures heating up. i'll have a look at the high winds in the north bay coming up in less than five minutes. and as we talked about, the general change over at the bay bridge, those cash lanes starting to clear, the fast track starts to build up. we're getting ready for the metering lights to turn on and within the next i'd say seven minutes we'll check on that, and the rest of your commute, coming up. good morning, i'm contessa brewer at cnbc global headquarters. here are today's top business
5:14 am
headlines. wall street set to open slightly lower this morning as recent market volatility continues. dow futures off by 40 points, an improvement over the 200-plus points we saw earlier. asia and europe in the red, oil prices rising amid tensions with saudi arabia. stocks rebounded friday. the dow had its best day since august but after it posted its worst two days since february. for the week, the dow, nasdaq, s&p 500 had their worst declines since march. today we watch for data coming in on retail sales. we got earnings from bank of america better than expected and net flick reporting earnings today, too. sears holdings filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy this morning. that marks the collapse of a company that dominated the retail industry for much of the 20th century in this country. sears has reached a deal with its creditors to keep most of its remaining operations up and running for now. it will close 142 money-losing stores by the end of the year, with liquidation sales expected to begin soon. that's on top of the 46 stores
5:15 am
closing by next month. the company has about 700 sears and kmart stores remaining and roughly 70,000 employees. facebook is testing an unsend feature for its messenger app. tech crunch says screen shots from a user show the ability to rescind the message, but you got to think fast. there is a time limit. gmail's undue feature has a 30-second feature. it's not clear whether facebook will roll out the feature to everyone. you just got to be careful when sending messages out. >> you have to think before you send. maybe take a half hour break. >> good advice. contessa, thank you. >> halloween shoppers, this year finding a lot of treats in the economy, they're letting that be known at the cash register. the national retail federation survey of consumers found willing to spend on average $87 per person or pet on halloween. >> because people like to dress up, not just their kids, but adults are really liking to

dress up, millenials really embrace this holiday. >> and because of the rising popularity of the video game fortnite, those characters are topping the list for kids' halloween costumes as well. whi >> i went to the store yesterday, so much merchandise it's crazy. >> it's amazing, and expensive. how long does it take to count to $654 million? >> not sure but you'll have plenty of time to do so. if you win tomorrow's mega millions lottery. tomorrow night's jackpot is supposed to reach $654 million. that would make it the second largest prize in mega millions history. may not have to remind you the last time someone won, july 24th, when 11 employeed shared the prize at a wells fargo. they bought their ticket at ernie's liquors in san jose. i bought a ticket on friday, and i never checked.
5:17 am
>> need to check. there you go. >> high winds meanwhile. >> yes. that's been the big story over the weekend, with pg&e proactively turning off power in parts of the north bay, especially in lake county, and that's where we have the red flag warning that continues through noon. what does that mean? that means that we have some high wind gusts, and also some very low humidity in this time of year. all the brush is completely dried out, so a small spark could cause those fires to spread very quickly. in the north bay, we've had gusts over 60 miles per hour, and in the east bay, 50-mile-per-hour gusts, and then afternoon, we should start to see the winds starting to calm down, so that's some great news. let's look at some of the wind gusts we've had already, with some of those high winds in mt. st. helena reaching 72 miles per hour. mt. diablo 62. orinda 45-mile-per-hour winds. yountville, napa still in the 30 to 37-mile-per-hour range with
5:18 am
some of those higher gusts. as we head out the door, we have some very warm weather, where the winds are rushing over the hills and as the wind does so, it warms up, so that's where we are also seeing temperatures in the 60s. some low 60s in fairfield. napa temperature is at 60 degrees, as you get ready to step out. and then in the south bay, it's in the lower 50s, which is what we normally see, and then we're going to heat it up again today, with some highs in the mid 80s, and parts of the east bay, concord reaching 84 degrees. also 84 in napa, and in san francisco today, some mid-70s. walnut creek starts out cool with 51 degrees. what we can expect as you head out the door, but then looking at some upper 70s by early afternoon, and then as you head out in san jose, getting the kids out the door for school in the morning, we'll be at about 52 degrees and 72 at recess. so as you're getting ready, the frizz factor forecast, of course it's a good hair day when it's
5:19 am
this dry outside. still a little bit humid in parts of the south bay but to the north the low humidity will give you a smooth hair day but it will be breezy for the afternoon. look at our inland temperatures over the next couple of days, still some 80s in the forecast, and normally we're up to about 76 degrees, so we're going to stay very warm even for this time of year, and as we look at san francisco, mid-70s today, but we'll cool it down slightly for the midweek. headed over to mike, you still have a couple of reports in the south bay. >> they don't sound like major issues but we'll report what we have out there because the commute is great. want to warn folks they might come across unexpected here as we move to the south bay. southbound 87, counter commute, northbound typically the commute direction but so light right now. curtner with a disabled vehicle. i'll let you know if any complications are reported. another issue 101 northbound at 680/280 we have a camera right there and we see the traffic
5:20 am
flowing smoothly. over here, just south of that interchange approaching the area reports of a minor fender bender over there. again we're watching the traffic flow and the speed sensors. doesn't look like there's any slowing. watch it headed north past story and tully up toward the area. fremont north out of the south bay looks great. light traffic past the truck scales and south with the headlights. few more folks at the nimitz, always has company and smooth through oakland toward the bay bridge as well. back to you. >> thank you, mike. coming up, the soccer team trapped in a cave, on the "ellen" show today. plus bob redell dealing with a case of the mondays but at least he's finding the positive side. check out the view on his twitter page, he's @bobnbc. the i

weather alert! this right now at 5:30, nbc bay area is issuing a microclimate weather alert. this morning, we are talking high winds, extreme fire danger across parts of the bay area. some winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour overnight. pg&e in fact shutting off power
5:31 am
and schools shutting down their doors. live team coverage is coming this morning. first want to say good morning to you. welcome to monday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm scott mcgrew. marcus washington has the day off. let's check the high winds and kari, good morning. >> good morning. the red flag morning continues through about noon today, due to the low humidity and the high winds across parts of the inland east bay as well as the north bay. all of the areas shaded in red under the red flag warning, meaning that any small sparks could spread rapidly. if you see any suspicious activity, make sure you report that immediately and the no burning today, also no mowing. any high-profile vehicles will be impacted. make sure you have a tight grip on the steering wheel and there will be the potential of downed trees as the winds gust up to 50 to 60 miles per hour throughout the next several hours. it's also going to be a very warm day as the winds start to council down, our high temperatures for the inland areas will be heading up to the
5:32 am
mid 80s. we're looking at a high of 83 degrees in san jose, and 85 in antioch. san francisco reaching 78 degrees. now mike, the monday commute, is it happening yet? >> it is, look, it's happening. the bay bridge toll plaza right on schedule. this is usually the earlest backbac backup we see at the volume. even tuesday doesn't start this big. people eager to get into the office and catch up on email. as we travel across the bay bridge no problems. maze backup at the toll plaza and getting into san francisco, fremont street has reopened over the weekend. bob redell is in the city. he's going to talk more about that coming up but remember, still in effect the temporary transit center. in the south bay we see a blip for northbound 101. the rest of the bay all green. good stuff here. southbound 87 is the earlier disabled vehicle still reported in the roadway at curtner. watch it if you're driving through that area. >> thank you, mike. power outages across parts
5:33 am
of california this morning. this is not an accident. pg&e shut off power to 60. customers across the state because of the extreme fire danger. 17,000 of them in the north bay, with most in lake county. >> we have live team coverage across the area. we're keeping a close eye on contra costa county as well. here is a live look right now at danville, where the winds are picking up. there's concerns of the combination of dry conditions, low humidity, and high wind gusts. we'll have a live report coming up from that area in our next half hour. but first, the big threat is in the north bay. that's where there was a reported 60-mile-an-hour gust. pete suratos is in calistoga, one of the many parts in the north bay in the dark. what are you experiencing up there, pete? >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. none of those wind gusts like you mentioned that we saw yesterday here in calistoga right now, but it is an interesting scene here, because all of the power is out where we're standing here in calistoga
5:34 am
on lake street. we're standing in front of calistoga high. the school is shut down because of the power outages. we want to give viewers what it looks like on lake street. the power is out. the planned power outages this is the first time pg&e is doing this, they're doing it proactively because of the fire danger warnings. you see it's pitch black on lake street in calistoga. let's jump into the latest numbers we're getting from pg&e when it comes to these planned power shutoffs in the area. we do know there's roughly about 59,000 customers without power in the north bay, and the sierra, and about 17,000 of those customers are in lake, napa and sonoma counties. of course those are the counties that were affected by the north bay wildfires, and as we've mentioned all morning long, the fire danger warning is up because of the high winds, and the dry vegetation in the area. and remember, it was just back in june that cal fire came out with a report that it was poog&s power lines and failed power poles that caused part of the
5:35 am
north bay wildfires. here's pg&e saying what they're doing with the planned power outages are the last resort. >> and we know that turning off the power is something that greatly impacts our customers, so this is only something we would do under extreme weather conditions. >> reporter: calistoga high is closed, as i mentioned. we'll have updates on the school closures running on the bottom of your television screen all morning long here on "today in the bay" and we'll have more on that impact in the next hour. we're live here in calistoga, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. of course our digital team and our weather team is all over this red flag warning as these weather alerts change throughout the day. you can use nbc bay area's app as a way to stay current on what's happening with the weather and other breaking news. it is 5:35. new this morning, fremont street is back open in san francisco, after part of the road was shut down due to problems at the trans bay transit center.
5:36 am
"today in the bay's" bob redell is live on fremont street with what commuters can actually expect. good news for them. >> reporter: it's a couple days early, too. fremont street reopened underneath the trans bay transit center in san francisco. it's too early in the commute to see how the new configuration of the road will impact the drive because we don't have that much traffic but you can see in the center of the road what's new, which drivers should expect as they're going underneath the transit center are the two vertical beams, being used to shore up the cracked steel beams inside the transit center. background you recall september 25th during an inspection, engineers discovered two cracks in a major steel beam that supports the bus deck here at the trans bay transit center. as a result they shut down the transit center and also shut down this road so they do get this shoring system in place to keep the beams supported. so that's what you have right now. when you are driving through here this morning, keep that in mind. if you're not familiar, fremont
5:37 am
street is a major road when you come off the bay bridge getting into the city, shut down between howard and mission. it is reopened in time for this morning's commute. as far as the bus service goes, if you want to use muni or still have to go to the temporary terminal, which is at howard and main, the transit center is still shut down because of the cracked steel beams. as far as fixing the beams permanently, engineers say they can fix it without replacing the beam. what that design or what that fix is going to be is not clear, but they say they can fix it without replacing the beam. it's a matter of figuring out how they'll do that. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there. as early as today, a judge could order a new trial in the case again mondst monsanto. the trial played out in san francisco and captured international headlines. the case involved a claim filed by an east bay man, dying of cancer, who accused monsanto of knowingly exposing him to the dangers of the weed killer roundup.
5:38 am
a superior court judge says it was never proven that monsanto acted maliciously or oppressively against dewayne johnson. the $250 million in punitive damages johnson was awarded will likely be thrown out and subject to appeal. happening today, anyone who uses lombard as part of their commute through san francisco may want to brace for added headaches over the next two years. crews kick off a major safety project between richardson avenue down to van ness through the marina district. major infrastructure and safety improvements are planned. transportation leaders warn there will be delays, so plan on alternate routes between now and the summer of 2020, when that job wraps up. live look at the bay bridge, this monday morning. happening tonight, the first of two nights of lane closures so crews can replace some of the seals on the bridge. this is the approach to the bridge. tonight's work will cover westbound lanes on the san francisco side. there's the glorious bay bridge.
5:39 am
tomorrow they'll repair the eastbound lanes. every night expect reduced lanes between 9:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m. the same thing happens each night next week all week, and no doubt we'll remind you, as will mike inouye. >> we'll clarify, i know laura, you made it clear but i want to make sure folks get closures for some reduced lane know but you have access both directions over the bridge all night. we're slowing across the bay bridge. no major problems getting into san francisco, as bob redell reported, fremont street open and that should mean that all lanes of the off-ramp have opened as well. they had reduced lane flow because of that closure that had been there for weeks, but now yesterday evening and into this morning's commute, we see folks adjusting, so plan on a little adjustment for this morning as well. getting over to the bay bridge toll plaza still has the backup as we look at the rest of cocoa county, slowing for highway 4 westbound into concord. no problems for the upper east shore freeway, just a little
5:40 am
slowing around highway 4 as well. those are typical patterns into the south bay, with an easy drive, a small bit of slowing north 101 in san jose, and there's the san mateo bridge. that high-rise although chp didn't give warnings we're talking about high winds. there may be a gust or two around the bay for these guys. >> we're certainly talking about that today. this could extend into the weekend? >> no, this will not extend all week long, withcy gre cwhich is but the winds may pick up and today will be the main thing we have to worry about with the high winds. as we look at the numbers, it's still going to be warm, even as we go into the next seven days, and by saturday and sunday, we're still feeling those highs inland, in the low 80s. and as we look at san francisco, it will be slightly cooler for the weekend. we may see the low clouds and fog returning for a little while, as you make weekend plans. maybe you're going to heavenly this weekend or parts of the sierra. it's going to be really nice, with some low 60s there. looking at 63 degrees on friday as well as saturday. if you're going to santa cruz,
5:41 am
another nice one with those highs reaching into the low 70s. very comfortable with mostly sunny skies, and then if you're headed out of town, going down to l.a., it's going to be in the low 80s for the weekend. by sunday it drops down just a few more degrees to 77 degrees. let me know what you have planned this weekend. i'm company@c @karihallweather. be careful around san francisco. scooters are back on the streets. the two companies that will be renting out the new way to get around.
