extreme fire danger, thousands are going without power in the north bay. >> kris sanchez is looking at prevention, but firsts. s. is in calistoga, where pg&e is cutting power. this is an unprecedented move by pg&e for this part of california. . >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. unprecedented. they've never done such a thing. we're on lake demonstrate where the power outage is taking place. this is the only light here as the planned power outages take place. calistoga high classes are canceled because of the power being out. in napa and lake county five school districts are canceling classes including right here at calistoga unified as well as lakeport and middletown. all together according to pg&e about 59,000 customers without power. that ranges from the north bay to the sierra foot hills.
6:03 am
the fire danger is high due to the winds and the dry vegetation in the area and remember it was back in june that cal fire said it was pg&e's power lines that caused parts of the north bay wildfires. so pg&e is notifying homeowners either via text, email or automated call about the planned power outages and our crews spoke to one homeowner in napa who says the planned power outages are a good thing. >> so safety is pg&e's top priority and we understand the impact that turning off the power proactively for safety would have on our customers, this is only something we'd do under extreme weather conditions. >> reporter: take you back out here live to lake street, you can see the areas doesn't have any power and of course we continue to monitor things. we'll have another update in the next half hour. we're live here in calistoga, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks for the latest there, pete. the winds strong in contra

winded gust 40 to possibly up to 60 miles per hour and we also have the concern of downed trees and then look at our temperatures this morning. we have a wide range, because in some of these areas, where the wind blows over the hills, as it descends those hills, it warms up. so in spots like oakland at 62, also 62 in fairfield, but it is cool in santa rosa, only 49 degrees as you step out the door and the same in livermore. if you're on your way to dublin b.a.r.t. station, it's only going to be 51 degrees, through the next couple of hours but it will be heating up again fast today, as you're getting ready, it's going to be a smooth hair day, because of the very dry conditions, but it will be breezy, but overall i think it's a good hair day for many of us around the bay area. here is a look at our highs today, reaching 78 degrees in cupertino and 82 in morgan hill. some of our normal temperatures will be in the mid-70s, but we are not going to be there today, hitting the low 80s for much of the east bay, 75 in san mateo. also 75 in the mission district

and 83 today in sonoma, and in novato. we have a lot of 80s in this forecast inland over the next few days and still some low humidity. we'll have to see if we still have that fire danger continuing, but it looks like things will improve with san francisco slightly cooler midweek. headed over to mike, you've got the ipad, you're tracking everything on waze. >> trying to see what is going on. we're easing into the monday morning commute. we had the early start for the backup over at the bay bridge volume wise but things eased off as is also the pattern for the monday. we're sorting it out. the south bay no more problems. we're going to see san jose build and continue steadily for the morning for the south bay. peninsula is great. new crash 880 right around just before you get to mission. no problems as far as lanes go. we'll track that with chp. mild for the tri valley and the even, for hayward south 880 the most volume build there. over here slowing for highway 4 and through concord. no problems upper east shore freeway. back over here to 680, working

south bay, in campbell, we are going to have a chilly start, but warming up, some very warm temperature this is afternoon. we'll talk about the weekend coming up in a few minutes, and mike, a new crash near the maze? >> kari, i was watching this develop as i headed to the set, we saw some crews arriving, looks like there's now a fire engine, maybe some medical attention, minor injuries, looked like they might be reported for the crash, a couple of chp vehicles and a couple of vehicles involved in the crash for west 80. you see how folks are starting to slow. you can kind of catch the signs over here and the commuter lane. this is as you hit the berkeley curve coming westbound 80 approaching the bay bridge. that's the critical point for these folks headed down the east shore freeway. the traffic is moving nicely but berkeley and right at the end and the flashing lights and distraction might be slowing folks down westbound 580 coming into the area. this looks like they should clear it quickly. until the flashing lights are gone we will have a distraction through the maze headed toward the bay bridge toll plaza, where the metering lights are on. the south bay starts to build for san jose, tri valley, east

"today in the bay's" pete suratos is live in calistoga, one of the spots where the power is out. good morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, scott. you know, just a moment ago, we actually saw those wind gusts picking up. they've been on and off in the past hour, and i spoke to a resident who said he had his power out since 7:00 p.m., and we're standing here on lake street in front of calistoga high. they canceled classes because of the planned power outages. let's talk about the overall impact of these planned power outages by pg&e. we know that five school
6:33 am
districts all together went ahead and canceled classes, between lake and napa counties, when it comes to the classes being canceled and all together we're talking about 59,000 people, pg&e customers that are without power because of all this. 17,000 in lake and napa counties. all of this is because of the high fire danger in the area, with the combination of winds and dry vegetation in those affected parts, and remember, it was cal fire who said back in june that it was pg&e's power lines that may have been at fault for some of the north bay wildfires, and as i mentioned, we spoke to a resident across the street from where we're standing and here is what he had to say about the planned power outages. >> precautionary for the first couple of hours, not a bad idea, especially when we heard the gusts going up last night about 9:00, and said all right, maybe a good idea, but this morning, thinking about all the stuff that's in the freezer that's not going to be good in another day or so, might be overkill, might be a little overreaction.

6:35 am
they were able to open fremont street between howard and mission underneath the trans bay transit center in san francisco. you're going to be driving underneath the trans bay transit center there's two beams there, in the middle of the road and there to support the cracked steel beam inside the transit center which is the reason why fremont street was shut down in the first place. as you drive through there's this new configuration you want to be aware of. so far in the commute we've not seen itch impact on traffic, traffic is smoothly underneath the trans bay transit center. back on september 25th there was the inspections that revealed two cracks in a steel beam that runs underneath the bus stack inside the transit center, when the center was evacuated, the road was shut down and they had to put in a shoring system which is the steel beams i was referring to were in the middle of the road for. the shoring system is in place to keep supporting that beam. what they'll do now is try to
6:36 am
come up with a permanent fix for that beam. an engineer said they will be able to fix that beam without taking it out. they'll keep the beam and what that fix is going to be they have not figured that out as of yet. bus service inside the trans bay transit center still not happening. you have to go to the temporary bus center at howard and main, talking about muni service. anyways, fremont between howard and mission back open here after it was shut down for a few weeks. as i was saying it looks like the commute is pretty light for monday morning, at least from what i can see here. anyways, reporting live in san francisco, bob redell "today in the bay." >> up to the minute update there. 6:36. happening today, more adv t adventurous commuters have an additional option to get them around san francisco. >> the electric scooters are back. after months of wrangling, san francisco today launches a new pilot program for dockless scooters. this is video we shot showing a

i'd join anybody's pool because i want the chance. i don't want to be left out. we don't want these folks left out. they're off to the shoulder and not in the lanes. they are left out of the main traffic flow west 80 at the berkeley curve. we have now a couple of crews clearing and the flatbed tow truck that arrived west 80 slows because of that distraction but everything is out of lanes now and much better news. the upper east shore shows slowing and also out of the maze for west 580 but no additional slowing should be as a result of that crash. we see more build through concord and walnut creek on the right coming off of highway 4. no problems through san ramon, danville, diablo looking nice. smooth drive for the south bay as well, south bay northbound routes build. get back over here. >> just came off a great weekend, hoping for another good one. >> it will be another good and warm weekend across the bay area. inland areas will start out the week in the mid 80s today and still be in the low 80s and this
