investigation now under way, and what could be a new breach in the embattled company's fall from grate. "today in the bay" continues right now. a very good morning. thanks so much for joining us. we'll get to that breaking news in just a minute. what about the winds? >> thankfully our humidity is recovering. that's also greet news, and the winds are dying down temperatures relatively cool. really just kind of less than ten miles per hour throughout the majority of the bay area. if you're going to be heading out to the dublin b.a.r.t. station, you'll need a jacket. we're in the upper 50s, by by
6:01 am
about second quarter we'll be in the upper 70s for dublin, which is a great forecast for a sunny afternoon. >> vianey, funny you talk about that dublin station, we have it right here. it moves very 134509ly here. i also want to point out in addition to the b.a.r.t. station, top of the screen, first time in the morning we've been able to see the dublin grate. watch the north bay and along the coast as the morning develops, we'll see patches floating around. that's what fog does. we haven't seen this move much. just sitting there north of 680. that's standard for your first for the south bay. and of course the bay bridge toll plaza metering lights are on. highway 4, we know the slowing through pittsburg, baypoint, that's the first for the county,
6:02 am
but the marker there, that's an evacuation area, and we're talking about the effect toward the b.a.r.t. station into pittsburgh. it may have limited parking. pete will talk about why, but first i hand it off to you for the breaking news. we started following this at 11:00 last night. a chaotic time for folks along the pittsburg/baypoint area. the evacuations, this is not far from willow pass road. we want to show you the video of authorities going door to door evacuating thousands of people from their homes. more than 4,000 people had to get up and guess out, ought concerned about fire. pete suratos is live where a lot of people ended up. how are they holding up? >> reporter: yeah, good morning
6:03 am
to you, marcus. there's for impact on the b.a.r.t. service here. obviously they're encouraging folks not to drive here, because it's one of the areas for the folks in the baypoint area. you see a number of cars here set up. folks have been sleeping in their cars overnight. at the red cross, folks have been lining unearlier, but that's the blank either they are passing out. obviously it's fairly cold out here if they want to get outside their cars to see what's going on. we were speaking with a gentleman who has a blanket. scott williams, good to meet you, sir. >> how are you doing? >> reporter: can you kind of tell me what happened? >> i'd say around 9:15, between 9:00 and 10:00, i got a phone call saying that there was an emergency evacuation so, you know, get your stuff together and be prepared to leave.
6:04 am
so i didn't pay attention, and next thing there was a knock on the door, and the officer said you have to evacuate immediately. so i got my wife, got my stuff together, grabbed what i needed to get, you know, for a short period of time. i said to my wife, go to your cousin's, and i'll go up to b.a.r.t. and stay close to the house just in case anything happens. >> reporter: kind of stay updated? >> yes. so i've been here since then. as soon as i got here about 15 cars, and i spoke to an officer he had -- >> reporter: that was last night. >> that was last night. he suggested that there -- he's got a phone call saying about 3,000 more people coming. >> a lot more than 15 cars that we're seeing, clearly. >> the next thing you know, i --
6:05 am
i started filling up. b.a.r.t. started filling up, and it got pretty crowded. >> reporter: obviously you mentioned you lost a home in clear lake. >> yes. >> reporter: so we're waiting to get more information, but how are you feeling now? >> we really don't know what's going on right now until we hear, you know, other things. from what we know now. uz. >> reporter: we're going to send it back to you, and we'll have more updates in about a half hour. we'll continue to work on that. our team coverage continues with bob redell. he's live in a baypoint neighborhood. i would assume it's empty, bob? >> reporter: we're just off
6:06 am
willow pass road that has been evacuated because of a gas pipeline fire and poinsettia and suisun avenue. it probably will be at least another -- based on conversation i had with a firefighter. this is a grass fire that spread to an underground vault that houses a 12-inch natural gas pipeline owned by chevron. this is not far from the am track train line there. the contracost ade fire protection district tells me the vault is still on fire, but they believe it might be a smaller gas line that's rupe terr feeding the flames. the concern, however, is that could cause the larger pipeline to rupture and explode. chevron is in the process of purging the gas inside of it.
6:07 am
as a result around 4,000 people have been evacuated in about a half-mile radius. >> getting everybody evacuated to the calgary temple or the b.a.r.t. station, unless there's somewhere us you want to go. the entire neighborhood is being evacua evacuated. >> do you know for how long? >> we do not know for how long. >> reporter: we are told by the fire department, chevron has been purging the gas line at a facility in ant i don't on buchanan road, so in that area you may hear a loud shrieking sound, a lot like a jet engine. the fire department asks you not to call 911. afterwards authorities will decide when it's safe for people to return to homes like these in baypoint. >> bob, thank you. if you have a smartphone app, you probably woke up to
6:08 am
alerts from us. wee always got people in the newsroom. at 2:00 in the morning we sent on the this new news alert. our app is free to download. today is the day that many south bay catholics have been waiting for. the diocese releases the list of names with credible assault he accusations against them. kris, what did you find? >> we've been waiting for a month. the san jose diocese ted it would released list accused of abusing children and vulnerable adults, but now several other diocese are following suit. last night was the final listens session for survivors and families to take about alleged sexual abuse. and that was well attended the the bishop mcgraw said that the
6:09 am
series of meetings has been informative, but also e painful. a lot of survivors and families want the investigation to be handled by the the attorney general's office, but not by the diocese, which survivors accuse of being mishandled in the first place. >> this whole investigation should not be controlled, conceived by the bishop. she should ask the district attorney of santa clara or the attorney general of california to investigate him. if he really wants to help people heal -- >> here's where we stand right now. the list of priests will be released today. we don't know how or when. we do know the new policy going forward, if any priest is accused. the diocese is to immediately
6:10 am
call the police and let them investigate. oakland and san francisco are also releasing names, but we don't know whether that will happy yet. we're going to post all of that on nbcbayarea.com when we have it. >> and where they are now. >> we're expecting it sometime today. >> although this is an in an effort for transparency, it hasn't been entirely transparent. we've got asking and will keep asking. >> and of course we'll release all of that. thank you so much, kris. the 6:10. we're noticing it's chillingly out there, but have no fear, we will be warming up nicely smarts into the upper 70s. san jose predicted high.

6:20 am
north, and the lower tail end, but at least we'll enjoy some much cooler weather. >> we're looking at a pretty cool commute as well. getting ready for the northbound push. not a major concern, and pretty predictable, all over the bay, but this is a disruption right here. we've been following this issue, the overnight grass fire and the evacuations because of the gas pipeline. that's this perimeter across the freeway, clear of any risk of fire. and now you might want to move over toward the north concord lot. this one is restricted, because they have reviewed emphasize

will o-- willow cove elementary is closed for the day because of evacuation. will the winds be a part of this today? >> fortunately not. what about the humidity? are we dry out there the good news is the offshore flow is now decreases. you can see the wind speeds, right through contra costa county, 3 to 5 miles per hour, so not really an issue, as the flow increases it helps us recover the relative humidity that we need overnight. as far as the temperature trend, they're in the 40s and 50s, but will clear out nicely into the afternoon. and yes, we're still tracking in 80s in the forecast. over to mike. >> we're looking at the entire

6:35 am
smaller gas line inside that gas line, and actually feeding the flames. the concern, of course is that could cause the larger pipeline to explode. chevron has isolated that section, and is in the process of purging the gas inside of it. as a result, 4,000 people have been evacuated in about a half mile radius from the fire. >> hello. there's a fire down the street, this area is under evacuation. right now. >> right now? >> we have to leave. >> chevron will be purging that gas line as a facility on buchanan road in antioch. if you're in that area, you may hear a large shrieking sound, kind of like a jet engine. if you hear that, the fire department is asking you not to call 911. this could take another hour or two, and then the fire department and law enforcement will decide whether it's safe for the neighborhoods to return. bob redell, "today in the bay."

before you head out the door, here are the top stories on today in the bay-- welcome back. thousands of people forced from their home because of a natural gas line there, a threat. >> there's a new conference going on right now. we want to listen into the updates. >> basically the release that's happening, it's a relatively small leak. nonetheless when the fire started, it ignited natural gas from a -- what we believe is a transmitter line that created the release, and then initiated the fire within the vault. >> reporter: so the fire started the leak? and then too, are we over the potential of an explosion at this point? >> we will conduct a thorough investigation to find out how that happened. until then -- until we can get
6:57 am
in there and see the damage actually within the vault and what has been damaged, we will not be able to determine that. >> reporter: are we in danger of an explosion as we speak? >> through the night, we immediately started releasing the pressure on the line, venting the line. as we speak we're applying nitrogen to the system, so no, we are not in any threat of an explosion at this point. >> reporter: how many hours are we talking for when people might be able to return home? >> our hope is, as this purge is completed, and we're hoping that's in the shorter realm of hours, and once the purge is complete and we're able to get in there and ensure that the fire is out, that the integrity of that other people that's in the vault is not compromised, then at that point we should be able to lift the evacuation order. we don't have a specific time.
6:58 am
