6:03 am
morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. along grand avenue, because there's a chance the massive structure fire that we're talking about may have caused a house fire not too far from here, causing a spot fire that they put out. it was just moments ago we saw this fire flaring up. the structure fire that we were working to put out. and we're hearing they may give us an update in the next ten or 15 minutes. i think we just showed you that video of those flames this morning, very big flames here in west oak lend, and this all started roughly around 2:00 a.m. it was so big it got upgraded. now, as far as where that building was, we are being told it was a three-story apartment building under construction. we saw a number of these times
6:04 am
of fires over the past few years. they're in that investigation phase for quite some time. we know that about two dozen people were evacuated. now here's oakland fire giving us ahn update not too long ago on exactly what happened. >> the fire started at 1:59 a.m., quickly escalated to a second-alarm incident involving a project that was under development, a multifamily residential occupancy, with six different buildings. fire was going good enough that units immediately upgraded to a second alarm, and subsequent third, fourth and fifth alarms to try to salomon enough resources to get containment. >> reporter: what you are looking at is a google earth picture of the project when it was under construction.
6:05 am
still unclear which the completion date was set, but clearly the fire has changed plans on that project. we're going back out here live, the smoke is coming out of the building. it did cause a spot fire down the street on grand and isabella street. we'll have more on that at 6:30 a.m. we're live here for "today in the bay." when there's a fire, there's always concern for the wind. kari is tracking that for us. >> we will see the mostly cloudy skies sticking with us. we are also monitoring the smoke and the winds that have been coming out of that, as we start out this morning, we have seen some very light winds. as we see the winds coming in from the north and west, it's going to be very light at times carrying that light smoke over toward young town oakland.
6:06 am
>> well will have some upper 40s starting out and then partly cloudy skies throughout the day. more on this in just a few minutes. >> 96:06. happening now union workers gearing up for a three-day strike. the patient care technical workers say they're upset about the university, how it's outsourcing jobs to contract company that is pay workers less. you might recall back in may they staged a three-day strike.

♪ south l.a. is very medically underserved. when the old hospital closed people in the community lived with untreated health problems for years. so, with the county's help we built a new hospital from the ground up and having citi as an early investor worked as a signal to others to invest. with citi's help we built a wonderful maternity ward and we were able to purchase an mri machine. we've made it possible for the people who live here to lead healthier lives and that's invaluable.
6:14 am
6:15 am
we've been monitoring five-alarm blaze in oakland. >> we want to go to a press difference. >> we wanted to get residents out of their home in case the fire spread in that direction. the fire is still actively burning in two of the structures. they're in different phases of construction. the two structures continuing to burn were the most advanced in completion. so sheetrock had been placed in there. so it's giving us some challenges trying to get the hidden fire in there. we're currently using up drone technology or unmanned aircraft technology in conjunction with the alameda county sheriff's office. initially they were helping us looking for any fire spread. we did have a neighboring structure on the 800 block of
6:16 am
isabella. we suspect that was due to embers landing in a debris pile next to the structure. we were able to contain that quickly. the unmanned aircraft is helping us currently on the buildings with fire involved to make sure we are getting the water where it needs to be. power had to be shut off in the surrounding areas. one for safety of the firefighters, impinging on power lines, power poles, transformers that were in jeopardy. initially the report was about 2,000 customers without power. i can see they're starting to close it down and reenergize the lights and try to consolidate that to the construction only. we're going supported out here -- i can tell you fires from the city of oakland responded, did go to a fifth alarm. we're working with oak lend police department to assist with

[ inaudible ]
6:18 am
>> uh, no. that was not evacuated. >> reporter: are you planning to do more evacuations in the area? >> no, we are canvassing the neighborhood, using unmanned aircraft with a forward-looking infrared camera, and the police helicopter is flying overhead, and looking for any new starts. >> reporter: about 20 to 25 evacuated? >> 25 to 30 is the number i received. >> reporter: is the fire considered controlled or contained? >> we have not placed a fire under control at this time. this fire we're in the initial stages of investigation. we're interviewing witnesses in the area, the construction foremen and anyone affiliated with the site. so at this time we're not saying if it's suspicious, it's under investigation, and we're just in the initial stages of that.
6:19 am
[ inaudible ] >> so the fire -- the construction site fires, they burn so big, because the other buildings that weren't this close to completion were in the framing stage, so basically just a big pile of kind linglings, a grouse quite quickly. they grow quickly, and then once they burn they go out quite quickly. the issue we're having here is this issue was close to completion. once again, yet another construction site in oakland that's gone up in flames. right now they're not saying it is suspicious, but the investigation will continue. two structures continued to burn, at one point it was a five-alarm fire, but really tough to fight there. >> like 2,000 people without
