showing up as slowing on the peninsula side. in the east bay the crew cleared south 880 at 23rd no, problems on the bay bridge. back to you. a national response team with the atf expected in oakland this morning to investigate this. look what's left of that suspicious fire that destroyed that condo complex under construction. brought it to you live yesterday morning on "today in the bay." "today in the bay's" bob redell is live at the scene. bob, let's talk about what investigators will be looking at. >> reporter: laura, the oakland deputy fire chief says when the atf arrives later this morning, they'll be looking for as much surveillance video as they can find. there could be a significant amount. the ceo of the company building the townhomes in oakland said they had installed a number of security cameras around the site because of previous suspicious fires at construction sites in oakland. this is the ice house condo complex, townhome complex at west grand and phfilbert.

grew to a five-alarm fire. four of the six buildings on the site burned down. embers started two other fires nearby. remarkably, no one was hurt. about an hour later, there was another fire that started, this was about a mile away at another housing development under construction an peralta. mayor libby schaaf who was at the scene says they don't know if an arsonist was behind the ice house fire but recognizes arsonists have been trying to burn down housing projects in oakland. over the past couple of years we reported on suspicious fires that burned down apartment buildings under construction in oakland and emeryville as well as one in concord, a possible backlash to the development and gentrification of the east bay. back out here live, the fire has been out for some time. we did see one fire truck out here earlier. we know that oakland police does have a couple of their squad cars out here positioned out here again, just to keep the

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is in washington, d.c., for us this morning. it appears the president is backing off some of those comments. >> reporter: well, he talked about democrats backing the caravan coming from honduras, no evidence of that and also talked about who's in that caravan, but now backing off that claim, too. president trump heads to wisconsin today for another rally. >> you're going to find middle eastern, you're going to find everything. >> reporter: after admitting there's no evidence that middle easterners are infiltrating a caravan of migrants headed for the border. >> there's no proof of anything. there's no proof of anything,

someone in south carolina is a million dollars richer >> someone here in the bay area though also won big. last night's drawing hit $1.5 billion. so here are the winning numbers. 28, 70, 5, 62, 65, and the mega ball of 5. single winner could take home a lump sum payment of more than $904 million, after taxes as much as $589 million. in san francisco, one ticket matched five of the six numbers, that's going to lead to a hefty payout. pete suratos will be live at the local safeway store where that ticket was sold. it's all coming up in about 25 minutes at 5:30. for the second day, thousands of union workers at the university of california are striking. they are part of local 3299. the patient care technical workers say they're upset about the university outsourcing jobs to contract companies that pay

workers less. nearly 39,000 workers plan to take part in the three-day strike. you might recall back in may, service workers at the university staged a three-day strike. jurors today resume deliberations in the fate of a san jose man accused of killing his parents in their evergreen home. testimony ended in the trial accused of shooting his mother and father in 2016. he represented himself at what at times was a bizarre and rambling defense. coface 25 years to life in prison. also happening today, a push to keep students safe. the contra costa county safe school summit starts at 9:00 this morning held at the pleasant hill community center. it will talk about how to prepare and prevent violence including school shootings. sandy hook promise will also attend today's summit. less than two weeks until

disappointed investors. the dow closed at 25,119 and the nasdaq dropped 31 points to close at 7437. today investors are eyeing more earnings reports from companies like ford and two companies based in the silicon valley, microsoft and tesla, after the bell. more than 60% of americans say their finances have not improved under the trump economy, that's cording to a bankrate.com survey. 45% of americans say their finances remain the same and 17% said they are worse off since the 2016 presidential election, despite low unemployment rates, stock market gains and an increase in wages. when the results were divided among party lines republicans were likely to report an improvement in their financial situation, giving credit to the president, republicans in congress or both. target is aiming to one-up its retail rival this is holiday season. the company announcing it will

morning commute from morgan hill starts out chilly. crank up the heater. we'll only be at 47 degrees through 7:00 and still some mostly clear skies at noon there, also about the mid-60s. it is humid this morning, checking out the frizz factor, do you need some smoothing oil or hair spray, maybe give it a few extra squirts as we start out with high humidity and still some cool temperatures but it's going to be a very nice day, mostly sunny skies with highs in the south county reaching into the mid-70s. milpitas reaching 69 degrees and 76 in walnut creek, and martinez expect a high of 74 degrees, and mostly some upper 60s for a lot of the peninsula from redwood city up to daly city and mission district today reaching 66 degrees. it's still going to be gusty, and not as windy in much of the north bay as our highs in novato reach up to 75. we have a lot of changes on the way. this shows the wind direction and a nice ocean breeze keeps it cool, the reason why we started out the week with some very

comfortable weather, but we're getting ready for a warmup as the storm track stays well to the north. this high pressure will keep the rain away from the bay area, and also keep our temperatures a lot warmer than normal, as we are going to see some intense heat building for especially this time of year. we're mostly looking at some upper 80s by the end of the week and then our temperatures peak on saturday of 89 degrees in the interior valley, but then a nice little cooldown just in time for early next week and halloween, and then for san francisco, low 70s going into the weekend. mike, you were checking back in to what's happening in the tri valley. >> that's right, we had the crash at 84 there. it's over on the shoulder, not a major problem, around the construction area but not involving crews. there is your build coming out of the altamont. there is a new crash, i'm trying to get more detail, sounds like everything is off to the shoulder with no injuries, that would be your commute direction southbound 680 right around mission north, watching for

saturday morning. 35-year-old michael watkins was walking on the side of the road when he was hit and killed. the family started a go fund me page to raise funds for his funeral. police say using surveillance video they have identified the suspect vehicle involved, a ford f-150 pickup truck with a sunroof. take a look at this. that is a historic church red e reduced to ashes, after a massive fire that may have been started by an act of nature. this happened last night at first baptist church of wakefield, outside of boston. that church nearly 150 years old. luckily everyone who was inside that church made it out safely. firefighters right now believe it started from a lightning strike. new this morning, netflix denying accusations it tailors its movie promotions based on your race. as bloomberg reports many users complained the service is try

if you were like us, bought the mega millions tickets hoping one would be the lucky winner but no jackpot here in california at least not the big jackpot. we're learning that the single ticket sold in south carolina. >> big winner there. that was a pool, we should add as well. you didn't put all your money there, but there was another lucky ticket, it was actually sold in san francisco. it matched five of the six numbers. barricaded himself in a home. when police say he shot at officers, they fired back, killing him. the man is from pittsburg, but has not been identified. at 5:34, new this morning, gilroy police searching for a man who exposed himself to a student t happened yesterday morning in a parking lot at gilroy high school. the girl entering the lot when a man in a car approached her. shortly after she ran inside for help. police say the car was an older model black four-door sedan with black rims. >> 5:35. in just a few hours, two victims of clergy sex abuse plan to speak out in san francisco about a lawsuit filed against the vatican, this comes a day after another assault survivor tom emmons made a big demand, listing 212 priests of sexual misconduct in the bay area. he's calling on every bishop in california to release the neighbors and whereabouts of clergy accused of sexual abuse.

no problem on 101. the castro valley y a little slowing there. cocoa county farther north a smooth drive toward the bay bridge. slowing around highway 4 through hercules, not a problem. the crew just cleared from that area and the crew just arrived meaning the work crew, folks going over to the north bay for the richmond to san rafael bridge. half way through our work week, almost to the weekend. things are going to heat up. >> yeah, we started out the week cool but as we go toward saturday and sunday, it's going to feel like summer across especially the inland valleys of the bay area. let's look at the saturday forecast, the coast 71 degrees. you might want to make it a beach weekend. the bay will be at 81 and inland, the air conditioning will be humming, and we're looking at sunday, slightly cooler especially for the inland valleys with the highs in the low 80s. 73 for the bay and 66 for the coast. what do you have planned? there's a lot of halloween festivals happening, one in

hall welcome back, this morning, nbc area's kris sanchez is gearing up for halloween, posted this photo on twitter writing "22.5 yards of tule for my unicorn and my parrot. what are your kids going to be for halloween?" new this morning, more kids are going unvaccinated, according to a pair of recent reports from the cdc. one report shows the percentage of kids who got no vaccines by the age of 2 went from 0.9% in 2011 to 1.3% in 2015. that translates to an additional 18,000 children. the report suggested multiple factors including access to vaccines and insurance are to blame. second report suggests parents' preference may contribute. the mystery viral outbreak killed seven kids out east.
