there are fears that even more may be discovered so, of course, there's a massive manhunt under way to find out whoever built and mailed the potentially deadly devices. we do have more with miguel almaguer. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. a very busy start to the day for federal investigators coast to coast. as you mentioned two new devices were discovered in delaware. those were mailed to former vice president biden. here in trifecta, another was mailed to actor robert de niro. investigators are trying to figure out who sent these package it's and if they were capable of detonating. >> reporter: this morning, three suspicious packages confirmed one sent to actor robert de niro. two others addressed to vice president joe biden found at two post offices in delaware. it comes after the fbi confirms an additional suspicious package

was found at a postal facility in los angeles overnight. the second addressed to democratic congresswoman maxine waters. law enforcement officials say the devices are similar to the pipe bombs found a day earlier sent to several political and media ig ifs. t figures. >> my highest duty as you know as president is to keep america safe. >> reporter: at a campaign rally, president trump promising swift action. >> we will find those responsible and we will bring them to justice, hopefully, very quickly. >> reporter: according to the fbi, the manila-colored packages pair to contain homemade pipe bombs. senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news the device have similar characteristics. they're made from pvv piping, contain a digital timer and

pyrotechnic powder. experts show they likely contain shrapnel. sources telling nbc news there were no devices found inside the envelopes but one appeared with a flag of isis reading dead or done and three silhouettes of women in high-heels. the first appearing in the mailbox of the new york home of billionaire democratic done another george soros. >> that package was disrupted and taken to the fbi lab. >> reporter: a package arrested to hillary clinton at her home in new york was intercepted by secret service as was another addressed to former president barack obama at his home in washington, d.c. >> we're going to jump in here. there's a fire alarm in the back. we'll find out what the latest is here at cnn. we'll be right back. >> reporter: later wednesday, another package sent to cnn and addressed to former cia director john brennan shut down the news network headquarters in new york, knocking them off the air. >> the time warner building in

new york city has been evacuated. >> reporter: the return address is on the packages. the florida office of former dnc chair debbie wasserman schultz. the congresswoman's office was evacuated when a package intended for former attorney general eric holder was returned there. that package later determined to be safe. those devices all had bomb-making ingredients. but it's unclear this morning that they were actually capable of detonating. most of those packages will go to quantico where peril investigators will be able to determine where those ingredients were purchased and if they were actually sent out from the same individual. of course, all of this two weeks before the midterm elections. guys, back to you. >> let's go to justice correspondence, he's been working his sources hard on this one. pete, good morning. in theory, there's a lot of

evidence here because eyou do have these undetonated bombs what are investigators doing right now? >> nine so far, including two sent to maxine waters one in l.a. juan in the washington, d.c. center that scans mail for congress. and we're told by several officials that fortunately the devices they've been able to examine so far appear to be poorly made.they apparently conr of flaws which for obvious reasons we won't be specific about. now, there's no way to know if that was intentional, or an intention to make bombs that looked real or simply the result of the bombmaker's mistakes. it takes time to only liedz these devices. and to get a good answer on why they don't work specifically, that's not known immediately. >> what are investigators doing? >> so, first of all, you have the bombs themselves. analyzed ted fbi lab. they're looking for traces of evidence, dna, fibers, hair, anything that would identify who did this. and they're also looking to

trace where the component's made from. at least four of these packages, the ones sent to the clintons, the obamas, eric holder, congresswoman waters were sent through the mail. those those packages were postmarked. and that's important because those marks contain important information to help figure out not only what city they came from but what post office handled them. from that, they'll look at surveillance video from the date they were sent. >> we'll bring in sean henry a former executive assistant director to the fbi. let's drill down on what pete was just talking about. if you're the investigators right now. you're literally in a race against the clock because you don't know if there are other packages out there. what are they looking at to try to see if they can find this person? >> well, there's an abundance of evidence here. you've got eight or more pack avenues delivered. you've got the physical packages.

and as pete said, dna, potentially, fingerprints, hairs and fibers, as well as markings on the envelopes themselves. them you've got the actual devices which investigators will look for specific signature there as it relates to detonation and how the bomb was constructed and they'll look through the database to see if they've seen this before. all of those are clues to help get down to who this individual or individuals may be. more importantly, where they were put through the mail service, if they were delivered by couriers. remember back to the boston bombing, we saw what was a movie of dzhokhar tsarnaev purchasing videos. that was videos of passers-by from other locations and investigators are going to use that as a key piece of information. >> there were a lot of

misinformation, it seemed like there were addresses incorrect, misspellings. does all of that figure into this? >> there certainly are as investigators start to hone in on this. there's speculation about who this could be. i think what investigators are doing right now is focusing in on the evidence. that's what they're trained to do. once they get to see what the suspects may be, they'll use the evidence off of the envelopes, as part of the large case to identify specific people. >> can you explain one thing that the nypd commissioner said it was a live explosive device with regard to the ones found here but then, they didn't detonate. so is it a real bomb? >> yeah, it certainly is because it has the components of a bomb. there's a detonator. there's explosive. it's contained within that capsule, the pipe, in this case, pvc. so all of the components were there. it didn't fire for a variety of reasons. they're not going to say that because they don't want the

bombmakers to go back and use this if in fact they use this as a live device but all of the components were there. >> sean, thank you. the president had a lot to say about the attempted bombings in his overnight rally. international correspondent peter alex saerngsd hander has that. good morning. >> reporter: president trump blaming the media for playing a part in causing the country's toxic political environment. it comes hours after calling for americans to come together in peace and harmony. and abandoning and took no specific for his rhetoric. >> any attacks on americans are an attack on our democracy itself. >> reporter: the president late wednesday in wisconsin again condemning the wave of potential explosive devices while touting his own restraint.

isolated storms can't rule out a tornado or two. we're talking 1 to 2 inches of rain, generally a half inch or so. tomorrow, this thing moves into the mid-atlantic state. we're talking widespread heavy rain event. could be some flooding, gale force winds likely at the coast. anywhere from a half inch to two inches of rain. the winds will be a factor. power outages are possible. wind gusts of 30 to 45 miles per hour. then it really gets wound up on saturday. strong winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour. periods of heavy rain, snow in northern new england. a coastal flood. anywhere from 1 to 3 inches of rain. plus the winds start winding up. wind gusts anywhere from 35 to 55 miles per hour. and airports are going to be a mess on saturday. from new york city all the way up to portland, we're going to have big, big airport delays. guys, back to you. >> al, thank you so much.

an update to the caravan heading towards the u.s. border. the number of people heading north appears to be whittling down. at one point there was an estimates 7,000 people in that caravan. well, now, the number is said to be close to 4,000. many have dropped out due to sickness and fear of police harassment. and people have excepted government offers to bus them back to their home country. now to the world series. the boston red sox have taken a demanding two games to nothing lead over the l.a. dodgers. perhaps the most memorable play from last night's game comes from top of the fifth inning. dodgers first baseman, david freese, it's a screaming ball to left field. and tracking it down, grabbing near the big green monster. look at that. bottom of the fifth, bases loaded for j.d. martinez. he gets the hit.

back now. 7:30 with the breaking news. yet another suspicious package found right here in new york. this time at a building with ties to actor robert de niro. >> it appears to be connected to the string of pipe bombs mailed to well known democrats and cnn. we'll have the latest on the investigation and we'll talk act the search for a suspect with one of the fbi profilers who worked the famous unabomber case. >> before that, a check on the other headlines. a man in custody after a fatal shooting at a store on the outskirts of louisville, kentucky. on wednesday a gunman shot a man and a woman and then exchanged

fire with an armed bystander before fleeing the seen. he was captured shortly after. the suspect so far has not been identified. there's no word on a motive. during the chaos customers were moved to the back of the store. that store is going to be closed until the investigation is complete. >> look out below. a military cargo plane accidentally dropped a humvee into a wooded area. it was on a platform and attached to a parachute. nobody was hurt. the noek wvoek vehicle was suppd in a drop zone about a mile away. dozens of firefighters were called to a california home after a man used a blow torch in an attempt to kill black widow spiders. the 23-year-old man was house sitting for his parents. he used a blow torch on the exterior brick of the house but the flames spread. fire officials strongly advise

people to use other methods when trying to dispose of spiders. >> like a can of raid. >> seems like a blow torch might have been too much. package bombs sent to well known democrats across the country. there are a lot of moving pieces, but investigators have some history to draw on as well. tom costello joins us with that part of the story. >> reporter: we're looking at that and the postal service element. there was a timer and explosive powder. the fbi is examining some of the bombs at the bomb lab in virginia where forensics team will investigate every detail looking for clues. amid a national man hunt for whoever is responsible for the pipe bomb mail, invaes -- investigators will pull from

other cases. >> a terrifying mystery in austin, texas. >> investigators zeroed in on the suspect after he was caught on fedex security cameras wearing a wig. erik robert rudolph killed two and injured 120 in a series of bombings. he was caught in 2003 after a seven-year man hunt. the unabomber killed three and wounded 23. >> another bombing is making the news. >> arrested after 17 years when his brother raised suspicions. there could also be lessons from the anthrax mailings. the suspect committed suicide. now investigators are hunting for another potential killer. >> he has a purpose an targets. we haven't found out if they were live or if he's send a message that said these weren't live but the next ones will be. >> the targets, political

figures. mail arriving on capitol hill and at most media companies is rigorously screened. >> the secret service and other agencies have been out front here for quite some time in deterring this type of threat. >> reporter: experts say the packaging often itself can raise red flags. protruding wires or irregular shapes. distorted handwriting. a return address that is different from the postmark and excessive postage like those addressed to john brennan using debbie washerman schultz address as a return address. >> the package bombs almost have more postage because the bomber doesn't want to go in face to face with the postal official and talk to him about what it will cost. he wants to drop it in the facility and be done with it. >> the postal service processes over 170 million pieces of mail each other. investigators will go over all

videos and still camera imagery looking for anyone suspicious while looking for possible dna evidence on envelopes. every possible detail you can think of. >> sounds like a lot of possible evidence. tom for us in d.c. tom yk thanks. that brings us to clint van zan, one of the fbi provilers who work -- profilers who worked on the unabomber case. good morning. we have some information already about who this suspect or suspects are. what's the profile you're kind of building in your mind? >> well, the question right now is are these bombs real or are they simply made to look real? it's hard to imagine somebody could build nine devices and we're told they have timing devices on them. nine times they went out there and we didn't get an explosive. we're glad that didn't happen, but does that suggest a bomber doesn't know what he's doing or is he simply trying to send a

message? just a shot across the bow of america for some political or personal reason? we're trying to understand that. but one of the things we've got going for us in new york, for example, there are 13,000 government and private business cameras out there. the average new yorker gets his or her picture taken 100, 200 times a day. they're going to be looking hard at those cameras, pictures as well as all this treasure-trove of forensic evidence, because none of these bombs went off we have the complete device and every forensic string that's attached to them to look at at this time. >> clint, these bombs went to prominent democrats. it leads some to conclude that it must have come from someone from the other political party. others are saying this thing may just be a head fake. what's your take on it? >> i think that's a good term, head fake. it's something that the fbi, atf and other agencies don't want to

get faked out. that's why you do a two-track investigation. just like a set of railroad tracks where one track says okay, it's likely a person who is reflective of one political belief. or the other track says it's likely somebody on the other side trying to do a head fake. the authorities will be looking at blogs. they'll be looking at letters that have been written to the recipients. this is not a person who just woke up three days ago and said i think i'll build at least nine bombs and send them out. this guy has had -- this person has had time to plan this. the question now is was he so good that he was able to put all the components in but not hook them together so the bombs didn't go off to send a message, or is this person so inept that they could build so many bombs and not do it? but remember, as you've discussed, we've got these other signs. we have notwithstanding all the

compartmentalizing a lot of stuff i was going through. i think i was always taught that we weren't allowed or supposed to show weakness or something like that ever because of being an athlete. you're supposed to be strong and push through anything. i think my struggles carried through any career. i hid them well. going into the last olympics, i was ready to open up and let everything come out. for me this is something that is very important, and there are so many people that struggle from very similar things that i go through and still go through. >> if you prove anything, it's that you can be exceedingly high functioning. i mean, think of how you did, for example, at the olympics, and still have these private struggles. >> it's -- it's wild to think about, but it is true. you can push through anything. for me at times it probably was a little scary and challenging to go through, but i found a way

to get through it, and i'm now addressing these issues that i and i'm openly talking about them. i'm still struggling weekly or from time to time i'll have bad days where i do go into a depression state or -- >> i think to understand how you've healed we have to i guess understand where you were. you talk about october, 2014 when you were really on your knees. like, you said you didn't leave your house for five days. you were going through basic hell. you were thinking about ending it. what was happening in that time? >> well, i just -- for me, like, i was so down on myself. i didn't have any self love. and honestly, i didn't want to be alive. it was a really, really, really crazy time for me. and i didn't want to see anybody, because for me i saw myself as letting so many people down and me, myself, in particular. and that's hard to carry. and i think over those three or four days where i didn't want to

leave my room. i didn't want to talk to anybody, i finally realized that i can ask for help, and it's okay to not be okay. and for me that's what changed my life. i never asked for help, really ever in my career. that was the first time i really did that, and i was -- like you said, it was basically on my knees crying for help. i'm lucky to be able to sit down with a therapist and chat and talk and open up. and it's challenging for people to do. i think it's -- for me now being able to work with talk space and traveling as much as i do, to have the access on my phone where i can pop on whenever i want 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and get the help i need, it's something that continues to teach me more and more about myself. and i think that's something that's kind of fun for me moving forward, especially with two kids. >> you mentioned head space. you're a shareholder, member of the advisory board.

this is a service people can call or text, excuse me, talk space. we had head space yesterday. now this is talk space. i can imagine there are people watching this who will relate to everything you've said. >> of course. >> they haven't made that call yet. can you talk about what's on the other side of the call when you finally just say okay, i need help? >> it's kind of getting to that point where you're ready to surrender, and ask for help. and break down and be that person that is going out there and getting the help that you need. i think if you look at something like talk space where we live on our phones. right? how easy is it to pop on and talk to a therapist, get help? if you're going to a therapist, you're missing work. you're taking time away from the kids. you're doing this or that. i think this is something that's just accessible. and honestly, being able to open up the conversation about it is something that's so important. really trying to take the stigma away. especially with kids. being able to open it up to kids, and if you look at some of

the stats where one in five kids from 13 and up will have some kind of mental health illness, and by 24, 75% of kids will have something. the numbers are shocking. and something has to be done. i think this is -- for me, it's an honor to be able to be a part of something like talk space. it's only helping me. i know it has the possibility to help so many other people. >> we're surrounded by pictures of your beautiful family. i was just thinking being at this healthy place in your life must make parenting kind of a dream with these kids. what's it like? >> it's amazing. watching beckette be eight month and crawl around, they're learning the sharing process of it all. it's pretty incredible. it's something that's really exciting. there boom is getting abs in with me. >> we feel like we're boomer's parents too. he was a baby at the olympics in
