7:02 am
from nbc news, this is "today" with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb live from studio 1a. >> hi, everybody. welcome to friday. it is 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. we have craig in here for hoda because she's in new orleans. >> we want to start with that breaking news that is unfolding right now in the mail bombs investigation. >> the fbi warned more packages could still be out there. just this morning at least two more were discovered at postal facilities. one right here in new york leading to a massive police presence. that was addressed to former director of national intelligence james clapper. another sent to senator corey booker, the new jersey democrat. this is found at a mail center in florida. same place as some of the other bombs were processed at. we will have complete coverage. start with miguel. miguel, good morning.
7:03 am
>> reporter: good morning. a chaotic scene here in midtown manhattan as local, state and federal investigators dissend on another post office where they have discovered a 12th device that they feared is a pipe bomb. that comes after another it was discovered in florida. they share the same hallmarks as many of the other packages as investigators intensify their man hunt. one addressed to new jersey democrat senator corey booker found in a florida postal facility. the other addressed to james clapper, discovered at a mail facility in new york city. at least 12 homemade pipe bombs now recovered in new york, d.c., florida and california. the terror targets all critics of president trump.
7:04 am
>> these pipe bombs being mailed might wake everybody in my business up a little bit and realize that we have to -- we have to begin to get this country back together again. >> investigators now believe all of the packages were mailed after inspecting postmarks like this one. evidence suggesting at least some of the pipe bombs origin e originated from this postal sorting facility north of miami. >> i can say with certainty that we will identify the people responsible for these acts. >> authorities say the pipe bombs appear to be made with one inch diagrammer pvp plastic with a digital timer. inside, explosive powder and broken glass added as shrapnel. but the devices were poorly made. some not capable of detonation. so far no injuries, but a clear message. >> that's absolutely terrorism,

7:06 am
country where many people are on edge. >> thank you. carry sanders is at that mail facility outside miami where the package to senator corey booker was discovered this morning. what is the scene there? >> reporter: well, the authorities decided when they found that package addressed to senator corey booker here that the best thing to do would be to evacuate this huge facility. so they evacuated the employees. there were bomb sniffing dogs here from the local miami dade police department, along with bomb technicians to remove it safely. the fbi is still here. they're interviewing employees at this mail facility. there is three shifts that work around the clock here, and they are wondering if anybody saw something or maybe doesn't recognize that they saw something but now will link back to the other packages because the real question in all of this is, because this is a sorting
7:07 am
facility, and because the packages can come from as far north as florida and as far south as key west, that's a huge area with about seven million people living there that maybe there is something that was dropped off at one of those post offices before it came here to the facility. but they don't know where it was dropped off. if they saw something here, it may lead them to trace it back where these packages began. right now, they are still working. the facility is open, but clearly every employee has their eyes on every package, fearful there may be get another one. >> thank you. nbc justice correspondent has been talking to investigators. pete, good morning to you. these additional packages raise the possibility that whoever is sending them is still sending them. we don't know if this is part of one initial mailing that's being discovered piece by piece. >> that's correct. the first package arrived at the home of george soros early
7:08 am
monday morning. all of them were sent through the mail. but the trick here is that some of them were outbound and interexcepted when they got near or to their destinations. but some were found when they were headed back to florida because of that phony return address on the packages from debbie wasserman schultz. we don't know if the package found this morning was inbound or outbound, but the good news here is that the postal workers now know exactly what they're looking for, and they can haul them away in this containment vehicle like you see before they ever get near their intended addressees. >> what do we know about how investigators will go about trying to find the person or people responsible for all this? >> so we know now that florida was a point where some of these came from. not only the fact that they found the package from corey booker, but officials have been saying privately and in fact homeland security had publically, the secretary said
7:09 am
publically last night that some were mailed from florida. that's why florida is the focus of the investigation. they're looking at not only the mail connection, and you have seen they can find out anything you are the about how it traveled through the mail system, but they're also looking, for example, did someone have a grievance with debbie wasserman schultz because her name is on every package as the return address. there is some reason for that. we know they are now doing interviews with people in florida, people that they think may have information about the investigation and about the case. so it does seem very, very active. >> all right, pete. continue to follow it. i know you will. thank you so much. also this morning there is big news out of the white house in the battle over immigration and that caravan marching toward the border. peter alexander has that coverage for us. peter, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is the issue that propelled donald trump to the presidency, his fierce tone on immigration. he just tweeted about illegal immigration moments ago.
7:10 am
ahead of the midterms, the white house is using some of its sweeping presidential powers to try to block that caravan of central american migrants from entering the u.s. just 11 days until the midterms, the president rallying up his anti-immigration base, making it far more difficult for central american migrants to enter. no decision had been made at this time. a u.s. official tells nbc, the pentagon is prepared to fly hundreds of additional troops to the border, requested those troops be in place by early next week. their assignment behind the scenes support to troops already there. >> is there any scenario under which if people force their way across the border they could be shot at? >> we do not have any intention
7:11 am
right now to shoot at people. they will be apprehended, however. but i also take my officer and agent -- their own personal safety extraordinarily seriously. they do have the ability, of course, to defend themselves. >> on twitter, the president ordering those migrants, still 1,000 miles away from the u.s., to turn around, warning they will be stopped. for the president, it's become a rallying cry. >> you will see a very secure border. you just watch. >> and the military is ready. they're all set. >> as far that border proposal, according to one senior administration official, one of the more extreme measures under consideration includes not allowing immigrants who were apprehended between ports of entry to claim asylum. >> thank you. it's going to be a nasty weekend for a lot of folks, a powerful nor'easter this weekend. >> good morning.

and even folks into the parts of the mississippi river valley with a lot of problems today. you can see these strong storms. here is this system making its way up to the north, causing airport delays, flooding, maybe some isolated power outages. by saturday evening it is into the northeast, bringing snow into northern new england. winds from 50 to 60 miles an hour winds gusts. that's going to cause downed trees, power lines. we have, in fact, flood warnings from new haven down to atlantic city. we are looking at heavy rain with possible storm coverage up to three inches. so what are the travel impacts? today we are talking about airports from washington, atlanta, charleston, rally dur ram as well. on the roads. this storm tomorrow, the armts all around new york, philly, baltimore, boston, washington and portland and on the roads

7:14 am
people were strapped in, expecting to land within seconds. and suddenly the plane just pulled up and then began to ascend very, very quickly. and people were fairly nervous because, of course, you don't know what has happened. then the pilot explaining to the passengers and to the royal couple what had happened saying there was an aircraft that was a little too slow to roll and unfortunately hadn't cleared the runway. we were too close, so the decision was made to abort the landing. the pilot deciding to pull up. you saw harry and megan shortly afterwards once we had landed. they were relaxed. they were smiling. they were laughing. they didn't seem to be in any way shaking, departing from the plane after a trip and now back here in sydney.

>> announcer: this is an nbc news special report. here's savannah guthrie. >> good morning. we have breaking news in this investigation into an array of mail bombs sent in this last week. a man in florida has been taken into custody for questioning. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the latest on this. pete, what are you hearing? >> well, authorities are not -- are being very careful here, savannah, not to say that they believe they have cracked this case. far from it. what they say is that they have identified a person that they believe may have information relevant to the investigation and that person has been taken into custody for questioning.
8:01 am
no charges, we believe, have been filed. they're not calling this at this point an arrest, but it may just be extra cautious. but we're going to express that same caution. now, we know there's been a great deal of investigative focus on florida, for a couple of reasons. one is the opa-locka sorting center which they now know some of the devices went through and in fact one was just found today there addressed to cory booker going through the facility, senator cory booker, but secondly, apart from that, we know there's been a lot of investigative focus, a lot of people that have been people of interest to them that have come on the hit parade and washed off and that they focused on a lot of different people. now their focus has been on a man, we're told, in florida who's been taken into custody for questioning. again, they're not saying that this is the arrest that breaks the case, but they believe that this is an important investigative step. that's the way they're describing it now. >> so as you said, there have probably been a lot of people
8:02 am
they have talked to in the last few days. this does seem to be something more serious in the sense that, as you put it, this person has been brought into custody. does that suggest to you that the person didn't go voluntarily? it needed to be something more than a chitchat at that person's house? to the extent you can read the tea leaves based on your experience, what do you think this means? >> well, i think you've got it exact lly right, but i just don want to get ahead of the information we know. we knew this morning that there was a great deal of interest in a particular person, and a lot of optimism that they may be headed toward the closing phases of this investigation. but we're a long way from saying that they have arrested someone and charged them with the bombing. the way it's been described to us is it's a person that they want to question. whether this is a euphemism and they're trying to hedge their bets, i don't know. i can only what we have been told and that's the way it's

been described to us. >> as you were mentioning, florida a big center of the investigation for a couple of days now, not just the mailing facility but also these packages. i think we're up to 12 of them in all that we know of, all bore one thing in common and that is the return address of the congresswoman there and the former head of the dnc, debbie wasserman schultz. >> that's right. for that reason one of the things they have been looking at was were there people that had a grievance with her. the fact that, sure, on the addressees all seemed to be people critical of donald trump, but every single return address was like the one you're looking at there to her with her last name misspelled and the name florida misspelled as well. but that's been a question for them. why, why focus on her? in fact one of the packages that was sent up here, destined for eric holder, the former attorney general, went back to her because of that return address. so that's been a question for investigators.
8:04 am
what does that have to do, why choose that name? >> indeed. i should mention the department of justice has now officially confirmed what you have already reported, pete, that there is a person in custody but we are making the distinction, as they are. they have not said they have made an arrest or certainly filed any additional kind of charges in connection with this case. so we don't yet know if this is somebody who could be a perpetrator or somebody who could be a witness. it's clearly somebody they want to talk to at this hour. >> well, you know, i will just say this. we just heard one other thing here that's interesting. now word from the justice department saying we can confirm one person in custody. and i think there are other indications to lead us now to think that this is more than just a custodial interview, that this is probably a person that they believe is responsible for these bombings, or at least a
8:05 am
very, very important step in this investigation. and let me put it this way, if there is an arrest or if there is -- this person is the person responsible, then i think we're going to hear later from the attorney general and from new york authorities, at least that would be the plan, if in fact that this is the arrest -- >> actually, pete, you and i are both reading live and i see that the spokesperson for the department of justice says there will be a press conference at the department of justice 2:30 p.m. eastern time, which is in about three and a half hours. so they confirm, as you've reported, there's a person in custody. perhaps this is it, we'll see. >> right. the reason i was being a little bit cagey there, was simply to say that my understanding was that if there was an arrest, there would be an announcement at the justice department. so putting two and two together, it does seem like this is more than just a custodial interview. it does seem -- surely does seem like this is an important development and that they have
