correspondent pete williams is in washington with more. pete, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this investigation did move rapidly. the first bomb found monday. the fbi had a suspect in mind thursday night and in handcuffs friday morning as more of the package bombs were being discovered. new york police and joint federal agents descended on the van parked north of miami accusing the owner of mailing the dozen pipe bombs. 56-year-old cesar sayoc faces charges which could bring 48 years in prison. >> we will not tolerate lawlessness. >> reporter: the windows of sayoc's van were plastered with stickers praising president trump. other images showed hillary clinton and barack obama with targets over them. sayoc had been living in the van and investigators want to know where the bombs were made. this follows the discovery of more bombs friday.
5:35 am
one addressed to james clapper and another to senator cory booker discovered at the mail distribution center and a third to kamala harris in sacramento. the fourth addressed to tom steyer. while none of the bombs exploded, the fbi says they were apparently designed to blow up. >> still analyzing the devices in our laboratory. these are not hoax devices. >> reporter: investigators say the big break in the case came thursday when analysts at the fbi laboratory found a fingerprint on the outside of the package addressed to maxine waters. because sayoc had a criminal record on file, finger prifrpri were on file and possible dna evidence is a match too. court documents say photos of

5:37 am
some more ammunition some say to some of his critics who suggest there's more he could have said. we're joined now by sean henry. >> authorities now believe they have their man. even after his arrest there was another package, so i think the big question this morning, we heard from pete that he's not cooperating. is there still a threat out there? could we see more packages either from sayoc or a copycat? >> i think that's one of the critical components of the investigation. authorities have said thus far they believe he acted alone. they're going to be looking if there is anybody who may have helped him manufacture these devices, people who are engaged in his sense of ideology and looking to harm as well. these packages may have been placed in the mail prior to sayoc being arrested. that's unclear right now. >> let's talk about the profile of this suspected mail bomber here. this is a man who drove a van
5:38 am
that was plastered with hate. it had cross hairs over some people who have been fierce trump critics. what does it tell you about the mind-set of someone who may have committed a crime? >> in prior bombings if we go back to ted kaczynski and timothy mcveigh, you had people who felt they were aggrieved, they had this growing visit rollic, and they felt they were not getting what they wanted. they were not being assisted. in this particular case, it looks like sayoc may have slipped through that. they take matters into their own hands. violence is the only way they can get it rectified. the investigation is still early on. i'm sure we'll find writings, through his social media and other methodology some of this concern he had, and he had expressed this point of view for a long time. >> can you put this
5:39 am
investigation into context for us? this week began with bomb scares. it ended with an arrest, and i have to say, the fbi, this investigation was swift. it was stunning with the ending here, or i shouldn't say the ending, but the reality is the fbi has had a rough couple of years. they've had clashes with the white house. how is it now? talk to us about the state of law enforcement and the fbi at this time. >> the fbi, the men and women there quietly go about their business every single day to protect the american public. in this particular case, what we saw was a surge and really the capabilities and the true expertise of that organization along with federal agencies, state and local as well, coming together to marshal their resources and identify this investigation. what the fbi has gone through has been some morale issues of course with a lot of the language that's been out there. they are nonpartisan. they're focused on protecting the public, and i think this case really demonstrates their capabilities and what they can do when they follow up. >> it started on a monday. it was wrapped up on a friday.
5:40 am
we all as americans owe them a huge congratulations and thanks. we thank you for your time: president trump in a rally in north carolina last night praised law enforcement for their quick work tracking down the suspected mail bomber. he also renewed his attacks on some of his favorite targets. nbc's white house correspondent kelly o'donnell has more on that. >> reporter: the president did a number of things you would expect. he denounced political violence. he called for unity. he did thank law enforcement, and he described the series of mailed pipe bombs as a terrorist act. he also heaped blame on the media and the democrats for their responses. frustrated and fired up, president trump claims he has been victimized by media coverage of the mail bomb suspect. >> we have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister actions of one individual to score political points against me.
5:41 am
>> at the north carolina rally, the president did not acknowledge that the suspect appears to be a trump supporter. hours earlier he said his politics were not an influence. >> not at all, no. there's no blame. there's no anything. >> reporter: before friday's arrest, he put quotes around the word bomb to complain that attention was off the midterms. at the rally he brought up past political violence, the congressional baseball practice shooting carried out by a bernie sanders supporter. >> we did not use that heinous attempt at mass murder for political gain because that would have been wrong. >> reporter: delivering a split message calling for civility. >> everyone will benefit if we can end the politics of personal destruction. >> reporter: but then throwing punches. >> can you imagine speaker of the house nancy pelosi, crying

chuck schumer, including crooked hillary. >> reporter: no attempt to quell the chorowd's chants against hillary clinton. >> i want to be niceme. i want them to say he was so nice tonight. >> reporter: earlier friday we asked whether the president would reach out to mail bomb targets. >> will you call president obama or any of them to update them? >> kelly you and i working together at the white house, we witnessed this. the president views everything through a political lens. we know he's back on the road for a rally tonight, several more scheduled for next week. are you getting the sense, are you hearing from folks there he's just going to keep ramping it up in these days? >> reporter: i also asked him if
5:43 am
there was anything he could do differently in the way he's engaging politically, and his answer was no. we will have a way to measure how his tone looks today because he's doing a speech in indianapolis for the future farmers of america, and then as you point out a rally in illinois, and that will give us a sense. but the north carolina rally tells us something. he's in a fighting mood. peter, congratulations, happy to see you in that seat. >> thank you very much. another big story this morning, it's expected to be a soaking day along the east coast. the nasty nor'easter bringing heavy rain and wind. >> it is not a good start to the weekend in the northeast. that's for sure. we have heavy rain coming in pockets across pennsylvania, new jersey, heaviest of the rain falling through southern new england. this will continue to move to the northeast very quickly. that's why flooding rains shouldn't be that much of an issue. as early as this evening, we
5:44 am
could even see a wintery mix in the higher elevations. on sunday that whole storm is gone. a secondary system will give us another punch of heavy pockets of rain as we go into monday especially. we're not looking at a lot of flooding rain again because of the sheer speed of this storm, but coastal flooding is an issue. this is a nor'easter in that you have the heavy precipitation, but along with that you have strong northeast winds. now, we are going to see a high tide late this morning through the new york, new jersey area. we have a high tide early this afternoon across new england. that he could lead to that water being pushed onshore, and that could lead to some coastal flooding with the two to three foot storm surge possible. winds are also very strong. we already had reports of wind gusts up near 50, 60 miles per hour. 21 million people are under some sort of wind advisory or high wind warning. as we go through the day today, we will continue to see those winds remaining up around 40 to 50 miles per hour. then as we go into tonight, some of those stronger winds move up across new england, portland, 36
5:45 am
miles per hour wind and then overnight we'll still continue to see those wind perhaps gusting up to 60 miles per hour in province town. additional rainfall could be as high as two or three inches, especially across southeastern massachusetts, but it's really the coastal flooding at the time of high tide. migrants are marching on towards the u.s. they're moving despite a new aid offer from mexico. the mexican president promising them shelter, medical attention, education, even jobs if the migrants apply for asylum and stay in southern mexico. the white house is pressuring mexico to help stop this caravan before it reaches the u.s./mexico border. saudi arabia announced today that the killers of journalist jamal jam jamal ka kashoggi will be prosecuted. he claimed that the murder undermines middle east civility
