>> good to be with you on a monday. >> breaking news this morning, an indonesian passenger jet has crashed. a lion air jetliner crashed into the sea carrying 189 passengers. the mangled wreckage has been found. the boeing 737 max 8 aircraft went missing just 13 minutes after takeoff from the indonesian capital of jakarta. officials with the country's disaster agency say the flight headed to a nearby island, lost contact with ire traffic controllers before plunging into the water. indonesia search and rescue agency are on the scene investigating the cause of the crash. fatalities are not yfootage of the water. let's go to nbc's sarah harmon in london. what else can you tell us? >> reporter: marlee, frances, good morning. this was supposed to be a short flight, 1:10.

the 747 took off and 13 minutes later it had crashed into the sea. 189 people on board, and that includes one child and two babies. so far we have not been informed of any survivors but obviously the families in these situations are holding out hope. a spokesman for the disaster relief agency posted photographs on twitter of debris being recovered. the flight was operated by a budget carrier called lion air. they'd said plane was new, had only been in use since august, and they don't know why it crashed. lion air's president said the plane had a technical problem on a previous flight, but he claimed it had been fully remedied. he didn't go into details about the nature of the problem. we know the weather at the time of the crash was clear and the pilot had more than 6,000 flying hours. indonesian officials are now using ships and helicopters in the search and the head of the country's transportation safety committee says they'll be sending in divers to locate the plane's black box. >> sarah, thank you.

now to the pittsburgh jewish community that continues to grieve after 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at the tree of life synagogue during saturday services. authorities releasing their names on sunday ranging in age from 54 to 97. mourners are holding vigils not just in pittsburgh but across the country. the tree of life wrab buy saying he's received messages of support from all over the world. >> jewish, christian, muslim, all with the same message. we are here for you. my cup overflows with love. that's how you defeat hate. >> the suspect, robert bowers, faces multiple federal charges. nbc's miguel almaguer is in pittsburgh with more. >> reporter: good morning. investigators say the horrific crime scene behind me could take them more than a week to process. 11 people were gunned down in a

matter of minutes. they were here celebrating life when they lost their own. riddled with gunfire, pittsburgh's tree of life synagogue is home to heartbreak and carnage, believed to be the deadliest attack on jews in u.s. history. >> we are pinned down by gunfire. >> reporter: the first shots rang out around 9:45 saturday morning. police say robert bowers used three handguns, like the ones he posted about on social media, and an ar-15 like this one. avi soriano was inside, too shaken to speak on camera. >> as i come into the chapel when services are going on, that's when i turn and i see the gentleman laying down, facedown on the floor, blood was coming out of his head. and i still hear pow pow pow pow pow pow. >> investigators say bowers gunned down his victims in three rooms, methodically moving floor to floor, before he was met by

gunfire from the police before leaving the building. >> had bowers made it out of the facility there's a strong possibility additional fatalities would have occurred. >> reporter: inside the synagogue he was shot multiple times. court documents say he told police, they're committing genocide to my people, i just want to kill jews. 11 people were murdered. the oldest victim, 97 years old. rabbi chuck diamond consoled survivors. >> they heard what sounded like gunshots, smelled gunpowder. >> reporter: on bowers' social media, a history of anti-semitic hate speech. and this post before the shooting, i'm going in. >> the fact that this attack took place during a worship service makes it even more heinous. >> reporter: it's unclear why the suspect chose this synagogue, a day of worship becoming a massacre. miguel almaguer, nbc news, pittsburgh. >> the suspect, 46-year-old robert bowers, is expd the sho.

what are some of the charges against bowers? >> reporter: those 29 complaints or charges are detailed in a federal complaint filed yesterday, five pages in length. the biggest are the 11 murder charges. but the federal government has been treating this as a hate crime. if you look at the rest of those charges, a number have to do with obstructing or impeding a religious ceremony or service. the federal government treating this as a hate crime. you have that, the federal complaint, in complement with a local complaint, a state complaint as well, detailing what miguel was talking about, what this gun man allegedly said when he came into the synagogue on saturday morning. the reprehensible language that he used to refer to members of that community. as you say, the suspect is expected to be in court today 1:30 p.m. eastern time. he has been hospitalized since this attack took place. he sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was brought to the hospital. he's been held under guard there. he's been described as being in

critical condition, but law enforcement in a wrenching news conference yesterday detailed how they have been able to speak that led them to investigate both his house, his apartment in baldwin, pennsylvania, and his vehicle as well. at that news conference you had the u.s. attorney for the western district standing alongside the fbi special agent in charge. take a listen to what the u.s. attorney for the western district in pennsylvania had to say. >> i want to commend the courageous police officers and s.w.a.t. teams who responded to the scene. they are truly heroes who, without hesitation, without concern for their own safe ity, ran toward gunfire to protect innocent victims. by confronting and neutralizing bowers, they prevented additional loss of life. >> reporter: marley and frances, we've heard that time and time again from members of the community, the speed with which law enforcement reacted to the first calls of gunfire at the synagogue behind me here in squirrel hill in pittsburgh, and the way that local, state, and

federal law enforcement officials have worked together since that attack took place. >> david, i'm sure investigators are looking heavily into his anti-semiticseenonline, especia last tweet that last posting saying, will go in. what are they saying about that? >> reporter: this is going to be a rich trove of information. they went to his apartment, they looked at his vehicle, but this digital footprint is of particularly keen interest to them. a lot of these comments were made on a social media site called began that's notorious for hate speech. this is giving them more information of what might have led him to this synagogue, 25 or 30 miles away from where he lives. >> dave, anything that we're hearing from the families now that are coming forward in a very difficult time? >> reporter: absolutely. and it's almost a cliche at this point when you talk to people who live in this neighborhood, they describe it as being very close-knit.

at that news conference yesterday you had the chief medical examiner for allegheny tye are, listing all 11 names of the victims, noting somberly the ages of them as well. as miguel mentioned just a moment ago, the youngest, 54. the oldest, 97. but folks here knew who those victims were beforehand, they weren't telling us their names, but they were known to people here. the nephew of one of those victims spoke about trying to get in touch with the victim in the aftermath of that attack. >> the phone call just kept going through. he wasn't picking up. it is a nightmare. it's kind of a fog. you know, i've -- i've been touched by a lot of people on social media. and, you know, it's just hard right now. >> reporter: folks in this community really reckoning with what happened here on saturday. there were big vigils on saturday, another vigil last night, trying to come to terms with what happened here. >> all right, david, thank you. now to a history-making

there and what it means to be part of a community. one of them is journalist howard fineman, an nbc contribute history grew up in that pittsburgh neighborhood. >> i grew up there. i keep in touch with people there. i go back frequently. it is, after all, my home. it's the most peaceful, pleasant and nonviolent place you could imagine in a city that respects its ethnic neighborhoods one after another. squirrel hill is a uniquely, in my view, american jewish place. it stands for the proposition that we are a free country in which people can worship freely and live safely. that somehow america is a fresh start for everybody who comes here, including the jews. that sounds like a lot of history to pile on a neighborhood in the city of pittsburgh, but it's one that i think jews across the country will understand. it's not new york. it's not los angeles.
