"early today" starts right now. good monday morning. i'm frances rivera. >> and i'm marlie hall. breaking news overnight. we begin with the latest on the brand-new lion air boeing 737 max 8 passenger jet that crashed into the sea this morning with 189 people on board. flying from jakarta to sumatra, the boeing crashed shortly after takeoff. rescuers have recovered several bodies from the water at the crash site. tearful families are anxiously still waiting for news of their loved ones. let's go right to nbc's sarah harman, who's in london. sarah, what's the latest? >> reporter: hey, good morning to you.or the families, the wait is excruciating, and we are learning more now about what

happened on the short flight before it plunged intohe sea. officials say that the pilot requested to return to the airport just a few minutes after takeoff. he then lost contact, the plane crashed into minutes after it took off from jakarta. now, the plane in question was a boeing 737 max 8, a new model. the flight was operated by a budget carrier called lion air. and lion air's president said this plane had experienced a technical problem during its last flight but said the problem had been fully resolved. he didn't go into any detail about the nature of the issue. so, we still don't know why the plane crashed. the weather at the time was clear and the pilot was experienced with more than 6,000 flying hours. insi helicopters in the search as divers try to locate the plane's black box. it's the second major air disaster in less than five years for indonesia. back in decembef 2014, an

airasia crash killed 162ople. and indonesian airlines, they have a pretty bad safety record, so bad, in fact, that over the years, several of their airlines have been banned from flying in both the u.s. and europe. family and loved ones of those on board now gathering at the airport, hoping against hope for a bit of good news today. marlie, frances? >> sarah, thank you. the pittsburgh jewish community continues to grieve this morning after 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at the tree of life synagogue during saturday services. authorities releasing their names on sunday, ranging in age from 54 to 97. mourners are holding vigils not just in pittsburgh but across the country. the tree of life rabbi saying he has received messages of support from all over the world. >> jewish, christian, muslim, all with the same message -- we

are here for you. that's how you defeat hate. >> authorities say the suspect, robert bowers, entered the synagogue and opened fire. he now faces multiple federal charges and is expected in court later today. nbc's david gura is live in pittsburgh. david, what are some of the charges against bowers? >> yeah, 11 charges of murder in that federal criminal complaint along with 11 charges of trying to obstruct celebration of religious beliefs, that is on which the federal government is pursuing the hate crimes charge that you mentioned just a moment ago. in addition to the federal complaint, there is a state complaint as well, 30 charges there. all of this a culmination of the work that law enforcement has done so far, the investigations that have taken place so far. there have been searches of the suspect's house, of his vehicle. yesterday, at a news conference, the u.s. attorney for the western district of pennsylvania highlighted the work that law enforcement had done since saturday. >> i want to commend the courageous police officers and

s.w.a.t. teams who responded to the scene. they are truly heroes, who without hesitation, without concern for their own safety, ran toward gunfire to protect innocent victims. by confronting and neutralizing bowers, they prevented additional loss of life. >> reporter: frances and marlie, that investigation continues in the building behind me. they've said this is going to be a lengthy crime scene and lawyers i've spoken with have said that in addition to those complaints that we've seen so far, there could be additional charges filed here in the coming days. >> david, i know the community is just shocked and devastated. what are you hearing from the people there? >> reporter: yeah, it is apparent immediately how close this community is. and even before those names were listed by the medical examiner from allegany county yesterday, people that i was speaking with knew of some of the victims. here's some tape of the nephew of one of them talking about how he found out that his uncle was one of the victims. >> the phone call just kept going through, and he wasn't picking up. it is a nightmare right now.

it's kind of a fog. you know, i've been touched by a lot of people on social media, and you know, it's just hard right now. >> reporter: you both mentioned the vigils that have been taking place. a large one took place last evening here in pittsburgh. there has been an outpouring of support from the local community, the state community, across this country around the world. we saw dignitaries from israel here yesterday, including israel's ambassador to the united states, here to pay his respects and to stand in solidarity with those who are weathering this tragedy that took place on saturday. >> and david, it was clear through his postings online how bowers felt in his anti-semic sentiment. what more do we know about that and how investigators are treating it? >> reporter: as i mentioned, investigators have been looking at physical evidence, what they found in his apartment and car, but he did leave a long digital trail of hate speech, something

investigators will continue to pore through here in the coming days. >> david guerra for us in pittsburgh. thank you. and as the investigation continues, we're looking more about the accused shooter, robert bowers. neighbors saying there was no indication bowers intended to carry out this attack right in his own neighborhood. nbc's ron mott has the story. >> reporter: alleged synagogue shooter robert bowers grew up in this area, attending a local high school. in recent years, leaving an unremarkable impression on his neighbors. quiet, though not unfriendly, they say, a truck driver who kept odd hours, a stark contrast to what we know about him -- >> i saw his photo, and i said, that's my neighbor. >> reporter: neighbors say bowers offered no hints about the bloodshed he's accused of unleashing. kerry owens was his next door neighbor for the past two upsett you live next door to the guy who's being charged with this? >> it's very upsetting knowing that someone that had that much hate was on the other side of my wall. >> reporter: officials suggested a possible motive in the horrific attack.

>> there is no indication that he is working with anyone else, and so, we have charged it and are treating it as a hate crime, but continue to investigate. >> reporter: authorities raided bowers' apartment in the southern pittsburgh suburbs, sweeping for any signs of explosives. bowers' social media activity also will be heavily scrutinized. he used the social media site gab.com and in one post uploading a picture of three handguns. it's unclear if they are the same guns used saturday. bowers also visited this home in a nearby community so often, some thought he lived here and say he kept to himself. >> it's sickening. it's really sickening. he come out and smoke and that's about it. there was no his, no byes. >> reporter: this is the apartment complex where robert bowers has lived the past two years. since his arrest this weekend, he has been under police protection at an area hospital, recovering from gunshot woundss attack. he is due in court for a first appearance before a federal magistrate, 1:30 this afternoon here in pittsburgh.

he, of course, is facing 29 federal criminal charges, including 11 for murder. marlie? >> ron, thank you. and as we've been reporting, the shock of saturday's tragedy is being felt across the country. in new york city, the empire state building went dark, except for an orange halo rolling around the mast for gun violence awareness. but back in pittsburgh, 11 families now prepare to say their final farewells to their loved ones. nbc's matt bradley has more on the lives lost. >> reporter: marlie, this extremely close community is aching for some good news, and doctors in this hospital behind me hope that those four remaining patients are going to be able to go home soon. but for the family and friends of those 11 people who have died, hope has turned to grief. when there's a death in the jewish community, families remember the dead by sitting shiva. >> it's going to be hard without them. >> reporter: it's a tradition steven holly has endured twice in the past month, first for his father, now for his uncle, daniel stein, murdered at the

tree of life synagogue. >> funny, loving, caring, family man. >> reporter: this time, he's grieving with a community left shattered by one of the deadliest attacks on jews in u.s. history. >> being with family and friends, i think that's the most important. >> reporter: among the 11 dead, a married couple and two brothers, david and cecil rosenthal, pillars of this synagogue, despite their intellectual disabilities. >> he was somebody who was a part of the community. cecil always told me they let him carry the torah. >> reporter: david defelice, a senior at duquesne university, met cecil rosenthal through a program called best buddies. >> i went to services, and cecil, he had his talas on, and he carried the torah around the room, and basically, he would carry the torah around and everybody would go and kiss it, and that was his job. he was a big, strong guy. he was able to support the weight reporter: survivors of this community say they'll keep carrying.

today the florida man accused of sending explosive devices to prominent democrats is set to appear in federal court for the first time. authorities say cesar sayoc faces as many as 50 years in prison if convicted of all charges related to sending bombs to former president obama, cnn, and other high-profile political and media figures across the country. sayoc is being prosecuted in new york, but an initial hearing is set for monday afternoon in florida. leading the news, anth team. shortly after takeoff from lester city's k arena, the chairman and four others went down in the chopper, causing a fiery scene in a parking lot. the soccer club described its owner as a man of kindness and generosity. fans laid flowers and wreathes outside the stadium. ride-share service uber is trying to avoid a repeat of what happened in 2014, when heavy demand brought down the system
