breaking news overnight. a passenger jet with 189 passengers and crew crashes y aer taking-off. a live report is just ahead. vigils around the nation were held in remembrance of those 11 lives lost in pittsburgh over the weekend. and today, the suspected killer will face a judge for the first time while prosecutors seek approval to pursue the death penalty against robert bowers. go before the elections, the role the commander in chief is playing on the campaign trail, at the white house, and in the wake of national tragedy. from the top on down, here comes the 1-2 pitch. sox win the world series! >> and just like that, boston brings home another championship

"early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm marlie hall. >> i'm frances rivera. breaking news overnight. an indonesian jet carrying 189 passengers, including at least two infants and a child, has crashed, and there is no official word on the fatalities. the lion air flight went down shortly after taking off from an airport in jakarta. according to officials, the pilots lost contact with air traffic control right before plunging rapidly into the sea. nbc's sarah harman is following this story from london. sarah, what more do we know at this point? >> reporter: hey, good morning to you, frances. this was supposed to be a short flight, just one hour and ten minutes long. instead, it took off from jakarta and 13 messaid, there w people on board, including one child and two babies. so far, we don't kno the families are holding out

hope. now, the flight was operated by carrier, lion air, and they've said the plane was new. it had only been in use since august, and they don't know why it crashed. lion air's president did say this plane had experienced a technical problem on a previous flight, but he said it had been fully remedied. he didn't go into details on the kind of problem. the weather at the time was clear and the pilot had more than 6,000 flying hours. indonesian officials are now using ships and helicopters in the search and they're sending in divers to locate the plane's black box. this is the second major air disaster in less that be five years for indonesia. remember back in december of 2014, that airasia crash that killed 162 people. and indonesia's airlines do have a poor safety record, so bad, in fact, that over the years, several of their airlines have actually been banned from flying in both the u.s. and europe. but today, for the country, and especially for the families, it's looking lik very tragic

day indeed. frances, marlie? >> sarah, thank you. the pittsburgh jewish community continues to grieve this morning after 11 people were killed in a mass shooting at the tree of life synagogue during saturday services. authorities releasing their names on sunday, ranging in age from 54 to 97. mourners are holding vigils not just in pittsburgh, but across the country. the tree of life's rabbi saying he's received messages of support from all over the world. >> jewish, christian, muslim, all with the same message -- we are here for you. my cup overflows with love. that's how you defeat hate. >> authorities say the suspect, robert bowers, entered the synagogue and opened fire. he now faces multiple federal charges. nbc's dan schenamen has more. >> reporter: pittsburgh is

grieving. >> i turn my eyes to the heavens. where will my help come? my help comes from god, maker of heaven and earth. ♪ >> reporter: pittsburgh is determined. >> this bigotry will not defeat us. love will conquer all. repter: leaders joined city leaders to remember the lives lost in what may be the deadliest attack on the american jewish community. >> we're a resilient people. we will work together as one. we will defeat hate with love. we will be a city of compassion, welcoming to all people, no matter what your religion or where your family came from on this earth or your status. >> reporter: it was during a saturday morning worship service when police say 46-year-old robert bowers, armed with four guho sho victims before police fired on him as he left the building. 11 people, ages 54 to 97, were killed. six others, including four law enforcement officers, were

injured. according to court documents, bowers told police, "they're committing genocide to my people. i just want to kill jews." throughout the day, mourners brought flowers, candles, and prayers to the synagogue. >> we're all pittsburghers, and we're all here to support you. >> reporter: a community determined to grow stronger through sorrow. dan schenamen, nbc news. >> the suspect, 46-year-old robert bowers, is expected in court later today. he's facing a total of 29 federal counts related to the mass shooting. let's turn now to nbc's david gore who's live in pittsburgh on how the community is doing. >> reporter: i want to draw your attention to 22 charges, 11 of those using a handgun to commit murder. those obviously key as the government makes its the other 11 are using obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death. that's how the government is pinning this as a hate crime. as you say, robert bowers will

appear before a magistrate judge hereme. all of this was outlined in a very wrenching press conference yesterday. we heard from the u.s. attorney who outlined his case. let's listen to what he said about the role of law enforcement in the aftermath of this. >> i want to commend the courageous police officers and s.w.a.t. teams who responded to the scene. they are truly heroes, who without hesitation, without concern for their own safety, ran toward gunfire to protect innocent victims. by confronting and neutralizing bowers, they prevented additional loss of life. >> reporter: and frances and marlie, in the synagogue behind me, it's described as a lengthy crime scene, law enforcement officials saying their work will continue for the better part of a week as they try to piece together what happened here on saturday morning. >> david, the community there is obviously devastated. what are you hearing? >> reporter: yeah, they have

come together in the aftermath of this devastation, is the right word. there have been vigils on saturday, vigils on sunday, and just a lot of people making their way up to the site of this attack, leaving flowers very close to that synagogue and talking about the importance, the specialness of this neighborhood. we focus on the role of the jewish community here, but people emphasize that the wide diversity of squirrel hill, everyone eager to tell me why they decided to move here, why they decided to raise their kids here, have families here. that's the schools, that's the sense of community. mr. rogers, fred rogers of "mister rogers' neighborhood" lived here, a few blocks away from where i stand. so it's a neighborhood well aware of what it stands for, and that is a real sense of community. >> really makes it tougher when you hear it that way, especially for the families now who have to bury their loved ones. what are you hearing from them? >> reporter: yeah, this is wrenching. we heard from the medical examiner from allegany county yesterday in that news conference, outlining the that he's doing, saying he's doing it with respect for civil

law, of course, trying to finish those autopsies as quickly as he can, and respecting religious law as well. of course, it's jewish custom, bodies have to be buried verytn well, frances. >> all right, david gura reporting from pittsburgh, thank you. as we've been reporting, the shock of saturday's tragedy is being felt across the country. in new york city, the empire state building went dark, except for an orange halo rolling around the mast for gun violence awareness. but back in pittsburgh, 11 families now prepare to say their final farewells to their loved ones. nbc's matt bradley has more on the lives lost. >> reporter: marlie, this extremely close community is aching for some good news, and me hope that those four remaining patients are going to be able to go home soon. but for family and friends of the 11 people who have died, hope has turned to grief. when there's a death in jewish community, families remember the dead sitting

shiva. >> it's going to be hard. >> reporter: it's something he's done twice, first for his uncle, now david stein, murdered at the tree of life synagogue. >> loving, family man. >> reporter: this time, he's grieving with a community left shattered by one of the deadliest attacks on jews in u.s. history. >> being with family and friends, i think that's the most important. >> reporter: among the 11 dead, a married couple and two brothers, david and kriscreas c rosenthal, pillars of the synagog synagogue, despite their disabilities. >> he was a part of the community. cecil always told me they let him carry the torah. >> david defelice met cecil rosenthal the best buddies program. >> i went to services, and cecil, he had hla on and he carried the torah around the room. and basically, he would carry the torah around and was a big,. he was able to support the

weight of it. >> reporter: a weight the survivors of this community say they'll keep carrying. >> pittsburgh is home. >> reporter: i'm glad you feel that way. >> no matter what. >> reporter: this community is continuing to pray for the four victims in the hospital behind me, but they're also getting ready for funerals, likely in the coming days. >> the grief there just palpable. matt, thank you. >> among the six injured in saturday's mass shooting were four police officers. after they risked their lives to confront the gunman. pittsburgh's darkest day may also be remembered as the day of remarkable bravery. >> reporter: with gun and medical bag, the emergency physician accompanied the members rushing toward the synagogue to save lives. >> startedee if there as medical director for pittsburgh s.w.a.t., dr. murray found himself in the

with shots still ringi scene, w treat one civilian shot in the arm. >> reporter: we're diagona synagogue. this is as close as we can get, but we can see broken-out glass, piles of glass in the street. there was gunfire coming from inside the synagogue to responding police officers. law enforcement officials here remain shaken by what they witnessed inside the synagogue. >> some of the individuals were at the top of the stairs, at the bottom of the steps, so it was a horrific crime scene, probably one of the worst i've seen. >> reporter: officials now turning their focus to the lives saved. >> when the first five police officers arrived, they tried to confront the subject. >> reporter: the ems medical director for the city responded after hearing shots from his nearby home. >> i realized quickly it was automatic gunfire, and i immediately knew i had to spring into action. >> reporter: pittsburgh mourning a tdy beeso much worse. >> they're all heroes for what they did, the first

is set to appear in court for the first time. accused ofs to prominent democr authorities say cesar sayoc faces as many as 50 years in prison if convicted of all charges related to sending bombs to former president obama, cnn, and other high-profile political and media figures. sayoc is being prosecuted in new york, but an initial hearing is set for monday afternoon in florida. taking a turn now to history-making season that's now reached its sweet end for the boston red sox. >> from the top on down, here comes a one-two pitch. red sox win the world series! 5-1 the final tonight! >> boston defeats los angeles in gamehighlights. by steve pearce put the sox on this two-run bomb in the first board but the dodgers answered bay with this solo to make it me

leading the news, authorities in boston are investigating a massive seven-alarm fire that broke out in an apartment building. most of those who lived in the building were college students. we get more from nbc's kathy >> i want everybody out of the building! i want the building evacuated! >> reporter: flames engulfed a five-story apartment building in a boston neighborhood that's home to many university students. >> we have people on top floors yelling for help. >> pitch black and then the firefighters start coming in from one side, and people started screaming for help from the top windows. >> reporter: at least 100 firefighters rushed in seven alarms rang out. using ladders for rescues as the fire spread quickly. >> just flames and glass shattering and people running. >> reporter: dozens of residents forced outside in the rain as they huddled together in a cloud of thick smoke. several students were treated for smoke inhalation. a firefighter suffered minor

burns. three others needed medical attention. the poor weather conditions made the hours-long battle to contain the blaze even more challenging. >> every once in a while the wind would shift, then it shifts another way. >> reporter: the cause of the fire is still unknown. there are new concerns over the building's safety as the dozens displaced wait to see if they can return home. mom and dad?
