nice and comfortable day. look at that, middle of the afternoon, we're only at about 69 degrees and stepping out the door on your way to the dublin b.a.r.t. station in the low 50s, a chilly start but a comfortable afternoon, so we'll get a look at all of our microclimates c e coming up and mike, how is it looking? >> the closure the fire in redwood city is all cleared, that's good news, it was affecting the roadside off-ramp. the fire was a small brush fire, roadside fire. no injuries were reported but the off-ramp was closed for an hour and a half. an incident right there west 580 just popped up, near the cutoff there, getting toward isabel and the construction zone. we'll check on that from chp, give them a couple of minutes to arrive on scene and get more detail. i've been tracking this, which just turned all green. we had the closure overnight south 880 toward 29th. i checked three minutes ago and they said the construction was still going on, but clearly those sensors just updated. i think we have a full reopen ready for that morning commute.

no problem, a delay building at the bay bridge because more folks are gathering and the counter commute east 80 over at san pablo dam road. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. 5:01. this morning, investigators are trying to piece together details of a shooting massacre at a jewish synagogue in pittsburgh. 11 people were killed and six others wounded. the alleged gunman, 46-year-old robert bowers, is due in court today. is he charged with 29 federal crimes related to saturday's massacre. court papers say he made statement about genocide and about killing jewish people. the tree of life synagogue is still locked down this morning, while federal agents gather evidence inside. across the nation, many are shocked, and saddened by the attack. ♪ with words from my mouth, i love you ♪ >> several memorials held overnight for the victims. jeffrey meyers, the rabbi at the tree of life speaking for the first time since the attack.

>> we will rebuild to be a stronger tree, offering a new light. >> reporter: faith communities here in the bay area also tried to help people manage through their shock. memorial service was held yesterday in synagogue in tiburon. >> regardless of religion, race, sexual orientation, the ability status, we say you are welcome here. you are not alone. do not let yourself keep on being afraid. >> other similar services held in palo alto and at stanford university. from the board room to the courtroom, a south bay superintendent and school trustee face a judge over allegations of harassment and a restraining order. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live from san jose's alum rock neighborhood. kris, what can we expect to happen today? >> reporter: well, at 8:45, the two parties have a date with the judge, and the superintendent here of the alum rock school

district. we'll find out whether that judge will order a trustee to stay away from her permanently. this is video from the last time they were in court over the issue back in september. the judge extended an existing temporary restraining order on that day. bauer requested the order after tran allegedly threatened her in a closed door meeting. tran is saying his words were taken out of context. this is impacting district business as that restraining order, ordering him to stay away from bauer means that tran cannot attend a school board meeting in person unless there is a police officer present. he has to dial in otherwise. the board meeting two days after that prior court appearance had to be canceled because there was no quorum, there weren't enough school trustee board members present. tran is running for re-election here in the alum rock school district. his name is still on the ballot for november 6th.

we'll follow what happens in the courtroom and keep you updated. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you for that update there. 5:04 for you right now. a developing situation unfolding south of our border. massive migrant caravan headed to the united states. today the group are planning to walk at least 25 miles, after stopping to rest overnight in mexico. the caravan must still travel 1,000 miles to reach the nearest u.s. border crossing in texas. that trip would be twice as long if the migrants headed toward san diego. president trump has urged mexico to prevent the caravan from reaching the border. his administration is looking at options to restrict their ability to enter the u.s., that includes an executive order. new for you this morning, wait times for citizenship applications is growing, more than 700,000 migrants are still waiting to become u.s. citizens. that process which uses the typical take about six months has stretched to be more than

two years in some places. the longer wait times developed after president donald trump took office. closing arguments begin today in the retrial of a man accused in the deadly shooting of a south bay paramedic. quinn boyer was shot and killed five years ago in the oakland hills. it happened during a botched robbery by a group of juveniles. several are doing down. one defendant named christian burton, jurors are locked on. his attorneys say he was falsely accused. another reminder of the danger being too close to caltrain tracks. train yesterday struck and injured someone near the belmont station. the person failed to comove outf the way. authorities have not updated the condition. >> it's an all too common warning these days in the bay area but the problem reached richmond. be extra careful using your credit card readers at gas pumps. richmond police found a skimming

device on the pump there that thieves used to steal personal financial information. investigators say all pumps should have a security seal along any opening there at the pump. if it has been tampered with, report that to the gas station attendant immediately. and nbc bay area has reported several other similar cases in the past few months, just over two weeks ago, two people were arrested after police found them tampering with credit card readers at a gas station in sunnyvale. officials there were alerted to a screen after the men triggered an alarm. styrofoam will become a thing of the past through one contra costa county city. this morning's concord city council will discuss an upcoming back set to take effect next year. all restaurants and other food distributors including schools and hospitals will no longer be able to use styrofoam products starting january 1st. more than 100 other cities across the state also have approved similar bans. in silicon valley, a new innovative plan to combine

housing and a farm. as "the mercury news" reports, the agri-hood development plan would include 361 homes own a small farm, built on vacant land across from westville valley fair. it would be open to the public. santa clara city council expected to vote on that plan next month. right now it's 5:08, it's monday morning. you're heading out the door and we have some all clear conditions as far as fog. we do have a few clouds mixing in. here is a live look outside in dublin. maybe you're headed out from brentwood. look at your morning drive, it's another cool one with some mid-50s starting out this morning, and then at about 10:00, we're at 61 degrees, looking at some upper 60s by noon. it's going to be a really comfortable day. our high temperature in antioch reaches 74. we'll be up to 73 in concord. also 73 in napa today. san jose reaching 72 degrees. all of these temperatures about normal for this time of year, as

we enjoy a nice little cooldown, and we'll see weather like this for a couple of days, but it will be heating up. we'll talk more about that in your trick-or-treat forecast in a few minutes. headed over to i can moo, you've been tracking a couple of issues early this morning. >> yes, we had a crash, not a crash but a fire on the peninsula, that cleared, woodside road the off-ramp fine from the bay shore freeway. on this side of the map we're looking at traffic coming in out of the altamont and approaching north livermore. that's where the crash was reported so just shy of isabel, is where we're talking about. no slowing shows up but the crash sounds like it might be sticking out into the slow lane. lighter traffic here. all the volume comes in out of the altamont and kari showed you the traffic westbound coming in toward the area. i turn our camera right-hand a, as it passes by, a smooth drive including through the dublin interchange and up there the castro valley, sorry, the dublin grade. look at the traffic there, even though you're at speed, there's a lot of company. guys, back to you. >> getting busy out there, thanks. coming up here, we go back to florida, where the death toll

good monday morning. it is 5:12. as we go throughout the morning we will slowly warm up. fremont will be at 53 degrees at 7:00, 57, still in the 50s at 10:00 and then we'll reach into the mid-60s by early afternoon. not a bad day, but it will be heating up, and we'll have a higher fire danger. i'll talk more about that and the rest of the week's forecast, coming up in less than five minutes. and right now, the san mateo bridge highway 92 looks great in both directions westbound with the taillights. you can make out the high-rise in the distance. we'll show you what's going on for transit and the rest of your commute. a happy monday to you. another rough day on the markets friday. dow fell nearly 300 points. ibm is buying red hat software, the third biggest acquisition ever for that company. tesla stock doing okay on friday, despite word the fbi is now involved in tesla's production claims.

facebook says it suspended an account related to more fake ads, this one from iran, the same ads we saw from russia designed specifically to divide us along race and politics. the pbs television show "magazine frontline" will hold two nights special tonight on facebook's troubles, starting at 9:00 p.m. facebook also reports profits tomorrow afternoon and that gives us the opportunity to ask some pretty tough questions about fake ads and right wing propaganda. also looking ahead we're getting towards the end of the month so we'll get the jobs report on friday. right now, an incredibly low 3.7% unemployment. the last time unemployment was so small, "the brady bunch" aired its episode and "get back" from the beatles was the number one song. a study of scooters says people are using them instead of cars. they're taking cars off the road. now this is video of scooters in san francisco. the study actually done in portland but found a significant

at 11:00, 12:00, we'll be in the low 60s and you can see there will be some clouds lingering and as you are getting ready, it will be breezy to start and then turning windy this afternoon. so as you're styling your hair, extra squirts of some hair spray necessary, because not only do we have the breezy winds, but we also have some higher humidity. we are look the at very comfortable weather today, with some low to mid-70s for the inland valleys, and some 60s for the coast, and as we go into tonight, the winds will start to pick up, and that's going to trigger a fire weather watch, and all of these areas shaded in this yellow will be areas above 1,000 feet, will have the potential of getting any fires that do develop to spread rapidly, as our winds pick up possibly to 55 miles per hour. we are enjoying a nice cooldown with more of a northeasterly wind, but it will be funneling through some of our hills and into the valleys today, as high pressure approaches, we are going to see more of a northerly

and then an offshore wind, and our temperature alwill get a bot as that high pressure moves in between wednesday and thursday. our warm weather returns, and then we'll see that for several days leading into the weekend. here is a look at how our inland valley temperatures shape up. we'll be in the mid-70s today, which is about normal, but then heating up for halloween into the low 80s. the warmest day will be on thursday. highs reaching 85 degrees with gusty offshore wind, and highs reaching into the upper 70s for the weekend, so not bad at all. san francisco also seeing the temperatures peak on wednesday at 75 degrees. as we head over to mike, you've been tracking the commute and has the crash in livermore cleared? >> it did without any complications. typical pattern out of the altamont pass and toward the tri valley. new crash is reported on the peninsula. letting chp get there but sounds like it's on the shoulder at

5:22, and happening today, the two men charged in the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire are back in court today. now we were in court on friday, but that was continued until today. derek almena and max harris original lay greed to a plea deal in the case but a judge shocked everyone by rejecting that deal, back in august. almena rented the warehouse and

converted it into a living space. harris was allegedly almena's right-hand men who collected the rent. two men are legally tied together but harris is trying to separate himself from almena's case. nearly three weeks after hurricane michael ravaged the florida panhandle we are getting new numbers on the number of people killed, six more deaths confirmed by fema yesterday, all in the state of florida, bringing the state's total to 35. the death toll from michael is at 45. the storm slammed into florida's panhandle october 10th causing mass destruction and also affected georgia, the carolinas and virginia. recovery is expected to take months. the week begins with many questions still unanswered about megyn kelly's exit from nbc. what we do know is that, for now, another hour of "today" show will fill that slot where her show previously aired. nbc abruptly asked kelly last week, after comments she made about blackface. it's believed that the network

celebrating another world series championship. >> that's right, red sox quickly became the wet sox when they popped the bubbly in the sox room. they beat l.a. 4-1 games to win their fourth trophy since 2004. the red sox winning on the road at dodger stadium. back at home in beantown, sox fans went nuts after celebrating the final out, fans took the party to the streets and shut down parts of boston common. as for the game, the sox went 5-1, boston's barrage included four home runs, three of them off star pitcher clayton kershaw. victory parade reportedly will happen on halloween morning. imagine what that will look like. world series is the tip of the iceberg for l.a. sports fans yesterday. if you planned everything right you could experience a cavalcade of sports before what the sports bureau is calling a sports equinox. the dodgers, football rams, hockey kings, soccer's galaxy

san jose, as we head to evergreen east san jose, we're up to 70 degrees normally for the end of october. we'll be very close, as we see the sun mixing with the clouds. here is a look at high temperatures for today with livermore and antioch reaching 74 degrees. we'll be up to 70 in palo alto and in oakland, and in santa rosa look for a high of 76. we'll talk about the weekend coming up, also halloween, in just a few minutes. headed over to mike, you've been tracking a morning commute and looking good? >> folks are saying we'll have our usual over here at the bay bridge toll plaza. usual meaning the backup, which started about ten minutes ago and has now filled in for all lanes, the cash lanes. only lanes that get a break are hov. we should consider carpooling whenever traveling through the toll plaza. almost always lighter there, and almost always clear through the maze as it is right now, 5:31, a smooth drive through cocoa county. look above my head, highway 4 starting to see slowing from pittsburgh, bay point and into concord. that could mean an early

slowdown toward the walnut creek interchange. we'll track that, just one of your first signs we track throughout the bay. the south bay shows a little build here for north 101 north of 680, a typical pattern as well. no problems for the north bay, guys, back to you. >> thanks, mike. breaking news for you this morning, a search and rescue mission is under way moments after an indonesia plane takes off. the associated press is reporting officials are not expecting to find any survivors. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is monitoring new video that's coming in to our newsroom, along with the latest information from nbc news. bob, there was an issue with the plane during a previous flight? >> right, laura and marcus. the president of lion air says the boeing 737 max 8 had some sort of technical problem on the previous flight but that it was fixed in accordance with the procedures outlined by the manufacturer. not clear what that problem was. we could know this plane was brand new.

it was less than three months old, when it crashed last night in the sea north of indonesia's java island. rescues found a large slick in the water, a fuel slick, parts of the fuselage and personal items from the passengers and crew, including a crushed smartphone, books and bags, but no bodies so far. lion fair flight 610 took off from jakarta around 6:20 monday morning local time, was bound for an island chain off sumatra, about two to three minutes later, the pilot requested a return to the airport, just right after takeoff, and then about ten minutes after that, the plane, that looks like this right there, disappeared from radar, and crashed in the sea, with 189 people on board, including a child, two babies and seven crew members, also among those passengers about 20 officials with the indonesian finance ministry on their way to an event. searchers still have not found the main wreckage but an indonesian official predicts there will not be any survivors, as you it mentioned, more than 300 people, including soldiers,

police and fishermen are involved in this search. this crash is a big blow to the indonesian airline industry. the u.s. and europe had banned indonesian from flying in their air space because of safety concerns. the u.s. lifted that ban in 2016. europe just this past june. reporting live in the newsroom, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, i'm sure the investigators and loved ones are hoping they find that to get some answers from that crash. it's 5:34 right now. the man accused of sending 1 explosive devices to democratic leaders along with cnn is expected in court. cesar sayoc was arrested friday after investigators traced his fingerprints an two packages. sayoc will appear in federal court in miami but expected to be prosecuted in new york city, because five of the 14 suspicious packages found were discovered in the federal district covering manhattan. authorities say one of the packages watt found at a

burlingame post office on friday. we covered it extensively, as breaking news, throughout our midday newscast. the package was addressed to democratic donor tom steyer. another package addressed to senator kamala harris was found friday in sacramento as well. a san jose teacher accused in a strongarm robbery returns to court. 35-year-old charles so is currently free on $65,000 bail. he was arrested in february in connection to a violent road rage incident. police say he had a loaded handgun in his possession at school when he was taken into custody. the evergreen school district told us so passed a background check when he was hired. >> 5:35 for you right now. we're about a week out from the election day. this morning we'll get the latest voter registration numbers to see if more folks will be headed to the polls. to you, marcus. we're hoping to get some of the new numbers from the secretary of state website at some point today, hopefully this morning during the "today in the bay" show, but here are the latest numbers that we have as of september. you can see on your television screen that in contra costa county, the number of registered voters are just over 600,000. alameda county just over 850,000. in san francisco, it's sitting just over 480,000, and in santa clara, we're looking at those numbers at about 857,000 registered voters as of september. i want to point out, early voting is under way around the bay area. i want to show you some video from over the weekend, we had seven early voting centers opening in santa clara county. now, those centers are going to remain open through election day, and remember, you can register to vote conditionally if you missed last week's deadline. >> with all this fraud going on and not counting the votes, and they keep saying over and over, vote early so your vote will

count. >> as far as the trends we're seeing, we know that in california, that the number of registered voters have jumped up 3% since last midterm, so right now it's at about 75%, compared to 72%, just four years ago. and right here in contra costa county, we've seen the largest increase in voters compared to last midterms, largest increase as far as bay area counties go, and that has gone up 81,000 registered voters. we'll continue to monitor the state's website for the latest numbers and provide any updates as they come in. we're live here in martinez, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, pete, thanks for breaking it down for us. be sure to tune in to "today in the bay," the morning after the election, for the latest results and analysis of all races locally and nationally. our coverage starts at 4:30 in the morning. good news in this next story, no one was injured in the taking of this photograph, but there was a coyote snagged on a fence. can you imagine? that's what vets tell us it should make a full recovery. someone saw it hanging last week

northeast of san diego and ramona. animal control officers came out quickly to rescue it, and provide treatment. they believe it unsuccessfully tried to clear that fence, but it should now be released very soon. probably quite frightened at that. >> yes. had some muzzle on it. >> coyote, he's okay. >> good stuff. we're watching over here, folks, pre-dawn hours you may see animals darting across the roadway around the bay. we're fortunate enough to have wildlife around the area as well so keep that in mind. but no problems. 101 around shoreline, a closer estimate of where that crash is, on the shoulder. no lanes blocked there. 101 through san jose a little slowing typical there, and also right over there, look we zoom in toward the east bay and tri valley. the castro valley y picks up volume. no problems there. right on schedule. same thing for the upper east shore freeway looking at the top number, just reaching 20 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge toll plaza, and a clear view

aranza and her mother, ezmerelda lynn lopez. aranza has blond hair and blue eyes. based on the mother's history they have reason to fear for aranza's safety. a southern california man due in court today after surrendering to authorities in connection with last year's deadly riot in charlottesville, virginia. the fbi says 38-year-old aaron eason turned himself in over the weekend among four men charged with traveling to incite violence. the group leader and two others were arrested last week. in all, eight members of the same white supremacist group are now in custody, including one from the bay area. a laptop containing personal information of thousands of pharmacy patients was stolen from sacramento-based raley's. they became aware of the issue last month. the files contained information

staying partly cloudy throughout the day, just a few clouds drifting by, as you step out the door t door, it is cool, only 48 degrees in nain napa this mornid 49 in livermore. mid-50s headed toward palo alto, and in san francisco, 54 degrees. going to concord, we'll be at 58 degrees at 9:00 and we go from the upper 50s to the mid-70s. it's going to be a really nice start to the week, with some breezy winds. our high temperatures today heading up to 70 in oakland, and in palo alto, san jose reaching 72 degrees. we'll be up to 74 in livermore, and san francisco reaching 67. so that live look outside in san jose, you see that our skies are mostly clear. it is a cool start, grab a jacket and later today, the winds will be picking up, so you may do bet we are a hter with a have a higher fire danger for the east bay hills as well as the knob hills. that starts tonight. look at the humidity levels,

dropping down from 9% to 19%. it's going to be critically dry and also those winds picking up from the northwest. we may have some gusts up to 55 miles per hour in elevations above 1,000 feet. so any small sparks could spread quickly, and be aware of that between tonight through wednesday morning. and then after that, we still have the northeasterly winds coming in, and then it starts to shift offshore, as we head toward the end of the week. as high pressure moves in, that means offshore wind is going to bring in some warmer weather, and we'll see that for a couple of days before we see it backing off just a bit, in time for the end of the weekend. so looking at our inland areas, highs reaching the mid-70s today. we go from 75 to 85 on thursday, and that will be the peak of our warmer weather, then back to the upper 70s for the weekend. looking at san francisco, still a lot of warmer than normal weather, but reaching 75 degrees, very nice on thursday. heading over to mike, you've

been tracking the roads this morning. seems pretty good. oh, jamming up there. >> kari, what's weird was the camera was turned the other direction and i saw tra ffic in dublin lightening up and then chp reporting west 580, just around the camera, reports of a crash blocking your two left lanes. i spun the camera around 180, and now we see it approaching and passing tasahar where things are jammed up, around the area approaching hacienda, which is partially blocked by trees. you can see from our sensors west 580 coming through dublin and approaching the dublin interchange a crash is slowing a slowdown. it may ease off 680 through pleasanton but you saw speeds dip as well. now we're tracking the rest of cocoa county moving nicely. highway 4 is slow all morning and we have the whether for the
