number on your screen. the alert impacts most people right now. we're live with a look at what to expect and how to prepare. we're following breaking news overnight. really rough night for one family forced into the cold after a fire ripped through a home. the children looking for a place to stay. developing in central america, thousands of people on the move again. president trump's pushback today. today in the bay continues right now. . good morning to you. thank you for starting with us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at the forecast with kari. >> it will be a cool start and heating up throughout the day. especially for the inland valleys. we're looking at mostly clear skies as you get ready to step out the door. here's a look outside over the south bay. we'll be at 50 degrees at 7:00. and then going from 50 to 72 degrees at 1:00 today.

and normally we're going a little above that. we have the high fire danger for the east bay. as well as the north bay hills. more on that and also those high wind gusts in the forecast coming up. do you still have the traffic alert? >> i do. this is the third traffic alert for the morning during our show here. the one in the north bay cle cleared. the one in the trivalley cleared for 580. that was earlier on. now we're left with the one behind my name. 101 approaching 280 near the interchange. no maim injuries, but this is a tough spot towards san francisco. the commute tends to build and we're seeing more backup that goes over the last few minutes. getting over from the east bay, traffic is backed up. it's to be expected. not so bad for a tuesday. the crash over there i was tracking at the bridge. the update was approaching the toll plaza.

it's now clearing the lanes. back to you. 6:01. a red flag warning, big news for people in a warning zone. >> today in the bay's kris sanchez is live for us. >> the fire danger on east bay hills is a regular part of life. there's a permanent sign saying this is a hazardous fire zone. when the weather conditions are such that they have been talking about the dry windy conditions, this is what happens all the small fuel just really dries out and creates tinder for a fire. same red flag warning in effect in the okayland hills as well. we checked with pg&e to see if this is the same kind of wind event that forced that public safety power shut off that we saw in the north bay two weeks

ago. over at oakland fire, there are more firefighters on duty. >> that's going to give us an additional eight bodies within the city. >> reporter: our weather team along with 23506r9 firefighters are watching for the extreme wind gusts that could exceed 50 miles per hour in spots. we haven't seen a lot of conditions out here in fremont this morning along 680 here. by the way, if you live in a wildfire prone area, you know what to do. don't mow the dry grass or create a space when it's this kind of dry conditions. and if you're just driving through, make sure you don't pull over in high grass.

if you're a smoker, put the cigarettes out in your own car. this is an issue many homeowners in the north bay are facing following the deadly wine country wildfire over a year ago. this morning state lawmakers will hold a hearing about insurance coverage. the leaders will examine if coverage has been sufficient enough to help those affected rebuild. several homeowners have complained about the insurance claims. many are saying it's taking a long time to be paid. today's meeting is being held at the college. it is open to the public. it starts at 10:00 a.m. breaking news for you. flames forcing the family from a south san francisco home out overnight. here's a live look there. crews have been on the scene all morning long. so have we. the fire happened on fireway drive. power lines caused some problems for crews on the scene. there's extensive damage to that home. eight people were displaced and

three children. fire officials could not confirm if the fire originated in the garage. the kaucause is still under investigation. developing right now, still no update from police on a toddler shot in east oakland. it happened after 7:00 last night near the border. right now we know the 3-year-old boy was hit by gunfire. but police are not confirming if he was caught in some kind of cross fire or if something else led to that shooting. police say someone walked the child into a nearby hospital. again, no word on the extent of his injuries. back to developments in central america. thousands of troops are heading to the border there to stop them. here's hallie jackson. >> good morning to you. president trump will head to pittsburgh along with the first lady to console and grieve with

people there after the synagogue shooting over the weekend. back here in washington, there's another focus on immigration policy. that's because the pentagon is now announcing some 5200 active duty arms troops will be deployed to the southwest border by the end of this week. 2,000 national guard members are already there. it's the same number of. troops along the border as in syria and iraq combined. in a new interview, the president says this deployment is in response to the central american migrants and refugees. still a thousand miles away. president trump's focus on the caravan says it's a tactic meant to provoke fear ahead of election day. we'll have more on that plus more for the president's new interview in just a bit on the "today" show. we're a week out from election day and this morning a deadline for voters. >> today marks the last day to request a vote by mail ballot. you'll be faced with making the decision on several measures including proposition 8.

dry out there. and you want to be careful out there on those trails. it's going to be a chilly morning at 7:00. we're at 51 degrees. at 10:00, some mid-60s and warming up to the mid-70s today. butt winds will be increasing as we head up to 80 in livermore. 84 for the high in concorde. 80 in napa. 74 in oakland with san francisco reaching 70 degrees. you still have just one trouble spot. >> you have trouble getting into sn san francisco from 101. that's because of the continued traffic alert. the rest of the bay let's take a big look here. we're showing a smooth drive over here for the south bay. building for hayward across 92 toward the toll plaza. the earlier crash over to the shoulder and we're looking at north north 101. this is the trouble spot here from the interchange with 280. we have a lot of slowing with build up continues because of the left lanes that are blocked by an earlier crash. no major injuries, but we have three vehicles that have to be removed and are having a tough

on monday. general electric says it's going to cut its dividend to a penny a share. netflix really hard hit. in fact, all of our favorite tech stocks are much lower. the fang that is facebook, amazon, apple, netflix, google, you add the loss value in the stocks altogether this year and it's $824 billion. now apt sl going to unveil new product in new york today. unusual for the company to make more than one major product announcement in one year. we expect new ipads and mac books. that takes place at 7:00 our time, so we'll update you on twitter about what we see. and then this afternoon apple reports profits to investors. sdplnch more confusion at tesla after elon musk said he got rid of all of his titles.

what does that mean? we really don't know what that means. he tweeted deleted my tesla titles last week to see what would happen. i'm now the nothing of tesla. seems fine so far. now you remember he agreed to step down as chairman. he remained ceo. this is in agreement after the tweet he made. legally a company has to have three officers. a president, treasury and a secretary. he will be the president of tesla. we're not sure if he's serious about us not calling him the ceo of tesla. but if that's what he wants, it works. a lot of what they do over there is peculiar. >> thank you so much. quarter after 6:00 right now. today in the bay viewers you're so great gearing up for ha halloween out there. we appreciate the photos you have been sending. unlike this one from hans morris showing his monster house in novato. >> we want the to see your

okay. >> i like the fresh ones. they smell so good. >> one thing at a time. candy first. >> it feels like summer out there. you're seeing it's going to melt. our inland valleys are going to reach to the 80s by tomorrow. and then we're starting out this morning with some very cool temperatures. but also with that cooler weather, we have higher humidity as of now. look at the humidity numbers and very critical in looking at this because of the humidity numbers will be dropping through the day. the winds will be increasing and that's the reason we have the red flag warning through tomorrow morning. then we look at na ta pennsylvania and the relative humidity during the middle of the day. dropping down to the teens. we'll also see that for concorde as well as the trivalley. and then usually during those overnight hours, humidity levels

go up. but we're not going to see it as humid tomorrow morning. look at this. in fact, we're going to keep it still in the teens for parts of the north bay. so that's going to be one thing to keep an eye on through the next 24 hours before things start improving. not only that, but we'll have a dry northeasterly wind coming up to 55 miles per hour. watching out for the high fire dangers. it feels cool. we have some low 40s on the map. livermore is 43. also 43 now in napa. and on your way out the door, you want to bundle up. quickly warming temperatures early this hamafternoon. so if you're getting ready, you're about to do your hair and you wonder if it's going to be a smooth hair day, i think so. even though it's barely humid now, temperatures are very cool. we're seeing the relative humidity numbers at 82% but the

humidity levels will be dropping quickly throughout the day. we head up to 81 degrees in morgan hill. 74 for cooper tino. in concorde, a high of 84. we'll be up to the 70s for much of the peninsula. and a high of 76 degrees in santa rosa. we have high pressure right over the bay area. that gives us the offshore winds as of now. you can even see the storm track being steered north. that will continue over the next few days. the commute is a little off this morning. >> it ripples throughout the week. this is the biggest deal we have had in the morning. now it will continue to feed off the east shore freeway.

it's now showing the problem. that's over on the east bay. the one traffic situation i'm tracking continues from approaching all the way up in to the 280 interchange. we still have a couple lanes blocked. but that's been going on for awhile. we'll track that 280 into the clearing. it happened after the pursuit. it clear ed a bunch of traffic. and that was unusual earlier in the commute. we're finally seeing a typical pattern. and the peninsula is getting fed by that. >> back to you. >> 6:20 right now. coming up next on today in the

developing now, the grim search for wreckage of the downed indonesia jet is wide thing morning. the airplane crashed into the sea with 189 people on board. safety experts said that the priority really is finding the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder. that's to help determine the cause of the disaster. ground staff lost contact with that flight 13 minutes after it took off yesterday morning. and happening today, anita hill is making a stop in the the bay area. she helped bring the issue of sexual harassment into the national spotlight by testifying at the confirmation of clarence thomas back in 1991. >> she will be the keynote

good morning to you. thank you for joining us on this tuesday morning. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. right now we want to head over to meteorologist kari hall to get a look at what we can expect with the weather today. >> we're under the microclimate weather alert until tomorrow morning when we're going to see humidity levels dropping throughout the day. winds picking up. a live look outside with all clear skies and till chile temperatures out the door. going to the bart station, look at that. it's only going to be 48 degrees. but a very quick warm-up as our temperatures head towards the low 70s by early afternoon. all the areas shaded in red, which includes the east bay and north bay and elevations above 1,000 feet under that red flag warning. winds pick up throughout the day and gust up to 55 miles per hour. as we head over to mike, the traffic alerts, have they cleared out? >> finally. folks may not know this, but we have been covering traffic alert since 4:30. that cleared. the traffic alert for the north

bay. the one in san francisco cleared. as you look, there's a crash at 680 heading towards the normal. chp says there's one lane blocked, but i'm worried they are going to call a traffic alert for this one too. we'll track that. meanwhile we're looking towards south county. heading north it's not a problem, but we would have that build coming up here and also coming up from santa cruz shows a little build. a quick look over here at your approach to the bay bridge. 25 minutes to the backup. back it you. >> breaking news. take a look at these flames and what the firefighters were up

against in san francisco. this was in south san francisco. they have been at that scene all morning long. and so have we. a family displaced here. it's a frightening situation. there were kids inside this home too? as a result of that early morning fire here on fairway drive in south san francisco. let's go ahead and show the scene earlier when they were putting out that fire. we're getting information from south san francisco fire. the fire happened around 12:45 a.m. here on the 300 block of fairway drive in south san francisco. they said they were called out for a fire and rescue. now when they aarrived on scene, the folks inside were outside the home.

they were okay, but they had to put out a two-alarm fire. altogether we're talking about eight people displaced. we had a chance to speak to those adults this morning. here's what she had to say. >> i went down and checked out the kitchen. i saw the garage already on fire. so i called 911. i need you to come here now. >> taking you back out here live to see the damage to that home here in south san francisco. there were no injuries to report.

>> thank you. new for you this morning, lanes of westbound 580 are back open right now in the east bay. they were closed after a chp chaenlded in a crash. >> bob redell rushed to the scene. he's live out this. what's the latest? >> reporter: the ri sij yule delays we saw on 580 seemed to have subsided. you're look at west dublin. compare that to an hour ago when all lanes were shut down. this was because of a police chase about 4:00 this morning. the driver of a bmw suv refused to pull over. they were speeding. the driver came on the dublin

interchange. all lanes were shut down. they had two shut down and reopened all lanes around 5:15 this morning. that driver is in custody. none of the officers were hurt. as you can see it looks like our tuesday morning commute is fully underway. but at least traffic appears to be at the limit. bob redell, today in the bay. >> 6:35 right now. new video to show you this morning. something that lets a lot of bart riders unnerved. it was posted to twitter by a bart rider yesterday. do you see it there? a man with two chain saws. we should point out at no time did he power up the chab saws, though he did seem to flip on the switch. one appears to be fresh out of the box. they confirmed they received calls and the police were waiting for him at an upcoming

degrees at 9:00. we're in the upper 50s. as we look at our forecast, we're going to go from the mid-80s to the low 80s. so it's not going to cool off very much throughout the weekend. and even though we're falling back, it's going to feel very much like summer. san francisco stays in the 60s throughout much of the week. if you're getting ready to make plans to head to napa valley this weekend, low 80s will be really nice with all the sunshine. also nice to go to yosemite this weekend with the high temperatures reaching near 60 degrees. a look at the temperature trend in three minutes. 6:39 right now. new this morning, spilling trade secrets. criminal charges against four former bay area tech workers. the country they are accused of helping. as 6:55, the bay area county opening its forensic lab ahead

new this morning: it may sound like a plot from a movie. time to take on the day. we're going to have nice weather. it does start out cool. here's a look at fremont. we'll be in the 40s out the door. into the afternoon, warming up to the 60s and we will have a high fire danger. i'll have more on that and some warm inland temperatures coming up in. less than five minutes. we're holding steadier at this bridge. there's your build out of the east bay. 101 here holding well. >> new for you this morning, it may sound like a plot from a movie. four biotech workers now face very real criminal charges.

they worked in south san francisco at genentech. they are accused of stealing trade secrets for a rival company in taiwan. three of the four defendants work as consultants for the company. the fourth defendant is accused of secretly working as a scientist there while still employed. they are now out on bond and due back in court. a lockdown, a standoff, people trapped in their offices, all of it caused by one stubborn mountain lion outside an office complex. the incident unfolded last night in pleasanton. someone noticed the big cat at 5:00. people were told to stay in their offices as they went to work cornering the cat in some bushes. thermal imaging drone was brought in to track the movement from above. the problem was after officers shot both the first and second tranquilizers, the drugs didn't

take. they shot a third and then a fourth dart. >> he was in the middle of the bushes. so getting a dart to go through the bushes without hitting branches and get a good shot was difficult. >> what a strong cat there. some three hours after it started, officers moved in and they found the big cat sound asleep. it's said to be healthy. they plan to release it to the wild some time this morning. president trump saying not everyone who is an american citizen should be an american citizen. >> major news out of the white house this morning. >> in an interview, he was considering an executive order that would prevent certains from becoming american citizens. >> how ridiculous we're the only country in the world where a person comes in, has a baby and the baby is essentially a citizen of the united states for 85 years with all of those benefits. it's ridiculous.

and it has to end. >> now the president there said the baby is essentially a citizen. the baby is a citizen under the current understanding of the constitution. but trump just revealed he wants to change that. >> in the process, it will happen. we have an executive order, that's what you're talking about, right? i didn't think anybody knew that but me. i thought i was the only one. >> to the constitution. the 14th amendment says this. but let's drill down to the words that really count. all persons born in the united states are citizens. you would think this is pretty clear, but some argue the intent is not. babies born to people here illegally aren't covered. now the president can't change the constitution, but he can challenge its intent in court. if you're here on a visa or green card, none of this applies here. the courts have already ruled on that. we're also well aware we are seven days from the midterm and

he wants to steer the conversation away from right wing violence to immigration and this may be his way of doing that. the president and first lady will head to pittsburgh today to mourn the people lost at the synagogue. the mayor of pittsburgh is asking the him to stay away until after the investigation is complete. a rally in michigan the vice president caused controversy after he asked the rabbi to give a prayer for the 11 members of the synagogue killed by a gunman. this should have been straight forward, but it wasn't. >> i pray this in the name of jesus. amen. >> that rabbi believes jesus is the messiah, something 99% of jews do not. it's not clear why the. the vice president chose to use that particular rabbi. we look at the president's tweets every day here on today in the bay. you can follow me as we do on

twitter. another note on politics. we're a week out from the midterm elections and this morning is an important deadline for voters. today marks the last day to request a vote by mail ballot. warrior fans still speechless after last night's game. on fire klay thompson, something we have never seen him do before. he broke the record for three-pointers in one game. he hit 14 of the threes and did it in just three quarters. they cleared out the bench because the warriors were destroying chicago. they score d a team record 92 points in the first half winning that game 149-124. >> isn't that amazing? they are helping each other now. >> you said the old record. the one set last year.

>> these guys are amazing. >> they are quite the team. we are really still going off of that. and we have warm wlr across the bay area as we start out this morning. let's get a look outside as the sunrises over palo al to and this is a look at your view. we are going to see the temperatures in the upper 40s and then quickly warming up by 10:00. we're at 57 degrees. and we'll be at 66 degrees at 1:00. the seven-day forecast where the south bay is at the bottom of the screen. it will be a warmer day. we will have some low humidity and some gusty winds. all of these areas shaded in red will be under a red flag warning. and what does that mean? we have a high fire danger. any sparks could spread quickly under these conditions as humidity levels could drop as low as 9% through the next 24 hours. as you make your way out the

door, we're only going to be in the 40s to start out. then sunshine lets us feel much more comfortable weather with some temperatures in the low 70s by 1:00. also really nice day to go hiking. be careful in those hills. some of those trails we'll be at 51 degrees. reaching into the mid-70s. expect a high of 84 degrees. we'll be up to 80 in napa. 70 in san francisco. 7 8 in san jose. we have this large area of high pressure and the winds flowing around that always clock wise. so we're getting mostly an offshore wind flow that's keeping the clouds and the storm track well to the north of us as this changes over the next few days. we keep the warm weather for our inland forecast throughout the rest of the week. watch out for that melting candy tomorrow. low 80s for the highs. it will be cooling off throughout the evening. and then for the weekend, we fall back.

you set your clock back one hour. we'll be up to 82 degrees on sunday. 60s in san francisco. you were concern ed about a crash. >> we're going to track that now. the commute, take a look at wherever you drive here. the south bay is showing a slower drive pushing north and a couple crashes. no major incidents here, but i'm watching this crash as you approach 101. we'll track that, but i am watching this crash and the slowing south at 680. it's moving spoothly now. there's been no update, but i have seen it start to clear a little bit. plan on more slowing. they head toward each other.

right there as you'd expect. getting over here, that interchange starts to slow. so does west 24th. but no problems over there. i talked about that bridge toward the north bay. here's that curve. it shows the slowing. but we see that most of the lanes are moving smoothly. the backup is at the tall plaza. it's not bad considering it's a tuesday. also happening now, trick or treaters in one north carolina neighborhood will have to find another area to collect their halloween candy. the neighborhood managed to get through hurricane florence relatively unscathed, but since then, sink homes holes have appeared. several spots have caution tape that are deeming some of the areas unsafe. the neighborhood hopes to be back in business for next year. much more ahead for you. a quick look at the top stories on today in the bay including

kris sanchez joins us live this morning with a closer look at that warning. >> good morning, all of that dry weather that is making our hillside go from green to gold is creating that red flag fire danger. that is in effect for the east bay along with napa, sonoma and lake counties. they put up the warning and called up firefighters and put several fire rigs on standby. by the way, we checked with pg&e to see if they have another power shut off like the one we saw in the north bay two weeks ago. the yew tillty says no because this is a different kind of wind event. the winds are expected to pick up in the time that the warning is in effect. it is in effect until tomorrow morning. so we'll keep tracking that danger for you. >> thank you very much. also in our top story, the wildfires are always on the minds of so many. in fact, in the north bay, state

before we leave you for the morning. it looks pretty good today. >> it's cool this morning. we are seeing a lot of 40s. but then look at how warm it gets this afternoon. 81 degrees inland. and even warmer tomorrow for halloween. and it peaks at 86 degrees on thursday. it comes down a few degrees for the weekend. still looking at upper 60s and a lot of sunshine throughout the rest of the forecast. halloween is looking pretty warm, but then as the night goes on, you'll be putting the layers back on. >> still an issue. the trivalue lley started out a now we have slowing because of a crash. overall the commute is not that bad. southbound 680 continues to build out of the noel. that crash taking a clearing. that just need the tow truck say it is can handle both of these cars. that's an issue.
