immigration, a central issue in the midterms. we have team coverage of the final push to get the vote out. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is in san jose, but we begin with blaine alexander, live in washington, d.c., with more of president trump and the fears about immigration that he's pushing. blaine? >> marcus, good morning to you guys. certainly we are four days away from election day and this election cycle is already certainly breaking the mold. we're expecting this to be the most expensive midterm election cycle in history. we're already seeing record numbers when it comes to early voting, and this year, unlike what we've seen in previous years, the president is front and center. president trump not on the ballot, but crisscrossing the country, making himself and immigration a central issue in the midterms. >> these are not little angels. these are tough people, and we're not letting them into our country. they're not coming in illegally. >> reporter: after sending

thousands of troops to the border to block migrant caravans, the president announcing plans to sign an executive order that would deny asylum for immigrants unless they come to legal ports of entry. meanwhile, tight races across the country are bringing out big names. >> hi, oprah. >> how are you? >> reporter: oprah winfrey knocking on doors in georgia hoping to elect stacy abrams. >> nobody asked me to come here. in with four days to go. and president trump is right back on the campaign trail today, guys. he has two campaign stops, the first in west virginia, and then he heads out to indiana for an event with the vice president. back to you. >> blayne alexander in washington, d.c., thank you, blayne. let's get to "today in the bay's" smpkris sanchez, she is e in san jose. >> troops are headed to the border today, president trump's response to the migrant caravan slowly makingi its way to the u.s. >> reporter: this is becoming a big issue for the election. the caravan is not expected to arrive until long after we go to the polls. now the images of those families desperate enough to walk thousands of miles away from home are powerful enough for folks here in the bay area to try to do something to help. some folks are helping with donations of money, but the latina collection in downtown oakland is collecting water, food and clothing that they will send to the migrant caravan.

donations can be dropped off at the collective in oakland on 15th street between 6:00 and 8:00 tonight. you can find more details in my twitter feed. just a week ago, another group of students mobilized to raise money to help the group strong voices organize a concert in berkeley to raise $10,000 for the my grant clinicians network that provides medical care for migrant families in detention centers while they seek asylum. >> this is a world we're inheriting and i think it's important for young people to get used to fighting for what we want. >> if you're just going to be angry and not do anything with it, then you're not helping. >> reporter: the migrants are making their way to the border, their numbers seem to be dwindling as some are starting to get sick and frail and too unwell to travel, but they are expected to arrive, as i mentioned, after the midterm election. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, kris.

it is 5:04. continuing our decision 2018 coverage, early voting is under way for the midterm elections. several measures will be on the ballot. san francisco voters will make a decision on proposition c, april homeless tax measure. it increases taxes on businesses earning more than $50 million a year by 5%. it would generate about $300 million every year. the funds would provide housing for 5,000 homeless people. tomorrow vote center also open in san mateo county. in total, there are 39 different locations you can head to. tomorrow, the centers will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. you can drop off your completed ballot early as well. on election day, the centers will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. of course, be sure to join us on "today in the bay," the day after the election. we will have the very latest results and analysis of all races locally and nationally. our coverage starts at 4:30 a.m. 5:05 for you right now, and a popular event in the east bay

will be canceled tonight. this is due to a nearby shooting incident, taking place last month. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live there in oakland, with details on what they're doing to keep that event safe. pete, we're talking about first fridays. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you, marcus. we're standing along telegraph avenue where the first fridays event typically takes place. as you mentioned, it's canceled tonight as organizers take time to reassess things and address some of the safety concerns due to the shooting incident that took place at last month's event. when it comes to the details on that, the shooting happened hours after the event ended, several blocks away on telegraph avenue, injuring six people. first fridays brings a positive vibe to oakland. it's been around since 2006. you go the a combination of music, art and food, along telegraph avenue in oakland and it does bring about 30,000 people to the city according to organizers. that's why they want to make sure it's a safe environment

together at noon, before headed to the city hall. the union represents the workers who have been in talks about contracts with the company since june. as "the examiner" reports, marriott's ceo is rejecting an invitation to attend. santa clara county is looking for a diverse group of entrepreneurs. the county is hosting its business diversity fair. people can speak one on one with several departments. annually santa clara county awards $2 billion in contracts for services ranging from software maintenance to janitorial services. the fair is later this morning in san jose. a special celebration is taking place at the "uss hornet" museum in aalameda this weekend. commissioned in 1933, "the hornet" turns 75 years old this year and a celebration that will take place saturday on the ship. the event will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the museum aboard the "uss hornet."

crash in the east bay. >> the east shore freeway, westbound 80, your commute direction coming into berkeley. you see the silhouette of university avenue overcrossing and this patch lit up, that would be golden gate field where the crash is reported. west 80 your commute direction. you see traffic flowly smoothly, relatively uninterrupted what from what we can see from the headlights. we see some back yum and slowing as you approach the merge from west 80 and east 580 coming off of that richmond-san rafael bridge, just past the merge and the racetrack, we have a crash reported in the middle lanes. two vehicles involved and both reportedly have busted axles, that may be an issue. might have to wait for a flatbed tow truck there. the construction north 880 through oakland cleared. no major backup at the been been and a light flow of traffic through cocoa county. concord, walnut creek, danville, no problems to the dublin interchange. tri valley, east bay moving at the limit. south bay and peninsula the same. the live shot for san jose,

where we do start out at 53 degrees at 7:00, and then after that, we go from the 50s to the mid-70s at noon. you do want to take that lunch outside, enjoy that time out there before it heats up. as you're getting ready this morning, and running the flat iron over the hair, it's going to be a good hair day. our humidity now at 71%, but it will be dropping and those winds as we head up toward the low 80s today. now san jose's high today will be 83 degrees. what's the record? 85. so we are going to be very close and we will see some of those readings reaching 85 and 86 degrees for parts of the tri valley, up toward concord, and into the north bay. so really warm weather, and then our winds pick up tonight, so a high fire danger will return for the east bay and north bay hills. same conditions that we had earlier in the week and hopefully we keep things nice and quiet with no sparks. you have to be really careful and that means that you

shouldn't also burn anything, don't put the cigarettes out the window and also no cutting the grass when conditions are this dry and windy. our winds start to pick up tonight and we can see that in napa, by about 5:00 in the morning we have sustained winds at 20 miles per hour and some higher gusts, and then we're still looking at some dry conditions, headed into sunday, with our highs reaching into the low 80s. only some slight cooling going into the middle to end of next week, and still no chance of rain. san francisco mostly stays in the upper 60s through this seven-day forecast. as we head over to mike, you've been tracking the and also that crash in albany. >> that's right, kari. i've been trying to adjust our me emeryville, moving it around. you can see folks coming off of the smooth drive coming around the bend and toward the racetrack, so it looks like it's uninterrupted, sometimes the optical illusion creates the illusion of slowing but looking at the map, there may be

welcome back, everyone. it is 5:25. new this morning, new word the va has no plans to end the controversial experiment on dogs. in the past, they've outraged animal rights groups. the experiments typically focus on dogs' brain, hearts and spinal cords. it commonly ends with the animals being euthanized. "usa today" obtained documents indicating the experiments are moving forward. the hope is the experiments may help veterans suffering from spinal cord and breathing problems. it's 5:25 for you. as americans head to the voting booth on tuesday, a small group will cast their ballot using their smartphone. >> this year, west virginia giving some voters the option to cast their absentee ballot from a mobile device using an app. the pilot program is only available to active military and

record high temperatures. i'll have more on that coming up. mike, you have new info on a crash in the east bay? >> we're following a crash, kari, on albany/berkeley border. this is bay bridge light. this is a good news, it's friday, lighter volume, no metering lights yet, no backup really at all, but there is a lot of slowing and some of that is result of the lighter traffic at the a held up albany out of richmond and san pablo. west 80 jammed up in the merge past golden gate field. the update it's in the fast lane blocking your left lane but your right lanes are able to get by, that's a little bit better from the folks making that merge off of 580 and the richmond bridge out of san rafael. san rafael to north bay and the rest of cocoa county aside from the one section into berkeley and albany talking about a smooth drive as well. that's the slower drive here for the section to buchanan. south bay up the peninsula, no

christmas eve game against jacksonville last year to join in the protest against police brutality and racial inequality. last year "elle" magazine asked a number of nfl cheerleaders why they haven't taken a knee. their response, lack of support and the fear of losing their position on the squad. as you can imagine the response on social media to last night's cheerleader's protest ranged from praise to anger. videos shows niners and raiders fans duking it out during a pretty good brawl in the stands. no injuries. brand new numbers from santa clara police, at least 21 arrests for last night's game, 20 for drunk in public and one

cnn is due in court for a bail hearing. prosecutors are asking for the suspect, cesar sayoc, jr., to be held without bail, given the seriousness of the charges. and today, a call for unity on the first sabbath after last weekend's deadly mass shooting at a jewish synagogue in pittsburgh. jewish leaders say that they will actually give a lot of support and love right now. we want to bring in "today in the bay's" kira klapper who is working on the story, and really, kira, this is trying to pull everyone together. >> that's right, marcus. last weekend's shooting was the deadliest attack against jews worshipping in the united states. 11 people were killed. of course, we all know by now, when a gunman opened fire at the tree of life synagogue, today a funeral will be held for the eldest victim, rose mallinger's family. says the 97-year-old was young at heart and had a full life to live. they say she lived for her family and was at the synagogue

every saturday. she was with her daughter in the temple last saturday. her daughter was injured in the shooting. leaders across the country are inviting jews and non-jews to attend services in all u.s. cities tonight. they're spreadin spreading #showupforsabbath as an invitation to all to honor the victim's lives and come together in solidarity. here in the bay area, ajc san francisco is holding services tonight and tomorrow. the group posted for all on twitter. we posted a link on our website nbcbayarea.com. over to you, laura. >> meantime, the support of a suspect in the synagogue shooting robert bowers is behind bars facing several murder and hate crime charges. if convicted, he could face the death penalty. the latest in the series of fires in marin headlands has investigators believing there may be an arsonist at work here. wednesday night that fire destroyed the historic ft. berry

rifle range building. the park police officer saw someone leave that building shortly before that fire erupted and that fire had people living nearby there ready to evacuate. >> seeing it so close made me think about getting the kids, getting the dog and what you can grab and get in your car. >> this is the fourth time inef responded to fires inside the national park. in september, a fire burned across a hillside, this is after starting in a nearby bunker. last weekend, they put out a small grass fire. 5:38 right now. the midterm election now just four days away. several races and measures are on the ballot. you can find a full list on our website, nbcbayarea.com. right now, we're going to focus on proposition seven. if passed, the measure could lead to the end of daylight saving time. no more springing forward or falling back. voting yes would not make it a done deal. the measure would still need to clear the hurdle in the federal

government. those backing prop seven say studies have shown that daylight saving time is increasing electricity use in the summertime. those against the measureit's t. that reminds me with the time change as well on sunday, this is the time of year when on monday the first work day after the time change, folks it will be dark when people are leaving work so expect that 5:00 hour to really be flooded with traffic. that tends to be the habit, after 13 years reporting t you notice a trend. over here, we're noticing this trend is better, looking at 32 minutes for the drive, from highway 4 to the beay bridge. it's about 10, 15 minutes longer than you expect on a friday, but traffic is held up right here by this crash west 80 approaching buchanan. chp says the fast lane is still blocked and they haven't updated for a few minutes but speeds look like they're starting to improve because the travel times came down about two minutes through the area toward what will be the build over at the bay bridge, so keep that in mind, as we track that approach

down the upper east shore freeway, that's the only problem. the rest of the bay moves nicely, very smoothly. it's friday, lighter forhe here. meteorologist kari hall keeps us up to date on what's happening today and throughout the weekend. >> it will be a great weekend an a good cause. awareness for homeless youth around san jose and there's a green light rally and walk starting tonight at the city hall plaza, and it's going to be very nice, with some mid-70s, as the walkers get ready to go around the city hall and downtown area, and then dropping back into the upper 60s, so it's going to be a really comfortable night, and then for tomorrow, some mid-60s for the coast and bay. we'll reach up to 74 degrees and 84 degrees for the inland valleys. on sunday, you may be headed to the beach, where it's going to be in the upper 60s, low 70s for the bay and imlannland and the

the summer like weather continues through the weekend. more on that in five minutes. and a nice view of the san mateo bridge. the tail lights westbound is your commute direction. westbound 80 is a problem getting down through berkeley out of richmond. we have a crash and i'll show you the changes on the scene. a fiery crash in southern california from overnight. four people were killed, including a child under the age of 10. in is on the golden state freeway in santa clarita. the crash sparked a brush fire next to the freeway. the big rig driver was not hurt. ace mysterious slow moving mud spring in southern california has some neighbors wondering if it's the first sign of the big one. "l.a. times" reporting it sprung up from where the san andreas

in san jose, the high up to 83, and today's record is 85 degrees. we know it's note this warm. for the second day in november, we're still going to have those well above normal temperatures as well for the north ay, wide the start of the day to the afternoon. so a jacket, maybe a sleeveless shirt and we'll keep you comfortable. then tonight, a red flag warning will go in effect for the east bay and north bay hills. once again, the fire danger will continue, as we will see the winds picking up for elevations above 1,000 feet. we may have some gusts up to 60 miles per hour. now throughout most of the day, our northeasterly wind stays light, but then starts to pick up as we go into tonight, and we'll see those winds at about 3:00 to 4:00 in the morning, sustained at about 20 miles per hour, with some higher gusts. we'll be watching that, and also some very low humidity, and then we don't want to forget to set our clock back one hour early on
